Issue no. 2: August - December 2017

Below, you can find, which solar activities took place during the second

half of 2017. Thank you for everyone, who helped spreading Scouts go

Solar and who taught various age or target groups, how to use solar

energy for themselves, their community and the environment in 2017! The

newsletter starts with the Scouts go Solar training of ten new Solar

Ambassadors, who joined our community and continues with many diverse

solar activities in the Asia-Pacific Region, Latin America and Africa. Have

fun reading!

September

Scouts go Solar training at KISC

From the 4th to the 14th of September, 10 new Solar Ambassadors from the Philippines, Palestine, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Chile, the Czech Republic, Poland and Luxemburg were participating at our Scouts go Solar training at KISC. For the first time, the Activity Guides of KISC were also joining some of our training units in 2017. It has been a very fruitful time and a pleasure to work with each and every one! Keep up the fabulous work!

of the Scouts go Solar training at KISC:

This picture shows one proud team

after the successful construction of the

solar suitcase- a miniature power sta-

tion with a USB port that can power a

laptop or mobile and three lamps. The

suitcase is particularly helpful after

power cuts and is one of our more

complex constructions during the

training.

The second picture shows that solar cookers

can simply be made with cardboard, wood

and tinfoil. Where the solar suitcase needs

soldering and technical knowledge, building

the Copenhagen Cooker is a good solar

activity, which can be done with and for

young Scouts.

SgS introduction to Saraburi Provincial Officers of Education in Thailand

On the 18th of September, a Scout group of the National Scout Organi-sation of Thailand introduced Scouts go Solar activities to the Saraburi Provincial Officers of Education at the Saengvitthaya School. They were showing the grasshopper race, build-ing sundials and sunglasses, playing the bottle-temperature game and using parabolic cookers, foldable solar cookers and even solar box cookers.

Scouts go Solar for the Peace Day Celebrations in Pakistan

In connection with the Peace Day Celebrations, the Pakistan Boy Scouts Association launched Scouts go Solar activities with a group of Sri Lankan Scouts at their National Headquarters in Islamabad on the 21st of September 2017.

During the activities, eggs and potatoes were being cooked with a parabolic cooker. Different solar equipment like lamps and radios were being showcased, explained and tried out.

Scouts go Solar exhibition in Pakistan

Also on the 21st of September, a solar exhibition for trainees of the Course on Alternative Ener-gy Resources for Development and the AHK National Centre for Rural Development took place at the National Head-quarters of the Pakistan Boy Scouts Association. The pro-gramme ranged from building and using sundials to explain-ing and using the solar suit-case. Different solar cookers

were exhibited and explained and smaller solar equipment such as radios, lamps and toys were showcased.

Cub Scouts have a Scouts go Solar Workshop in Mexico

A group of 33 Cub Scouts were introduced to Scouts go Solar on the 23rd of September 2017 and received the Scouts go Solar Badge. During the workshop, safety issues, the greenhouse effect and the UV rays were being discussed. Issues such as saving solar energy was being addressed: The Cub Scouts now know about the usage of batteries to save energy or the alternative to be sending the produced solar energy to the national grid. They also cooked with solar energy and learned how to make a solar compass.

Scouts go Solar at the APR Workshop on Environment Education in Sri Lanka

From the 29th of September to the 3rd of October 2017, the Solar Ambassador Bernando De Leon helped as a resource person during the APR Workshop on Environment Education in Scouting, which was held at the Hotel Yapahuwa Paradise in Kurunegala District, the North-Western Province of Sri Lanka. Bernando De Leon was giving a presentation on Scouts go Solar and the possibilities solar energy holds. The entire Solafrica team thanks Bernando De Leon for his professional and inspiring commitment to foster Scouts go Solar in the Scout Movement!

Additonally, at the 18th Provincial Scout Jamboree in the Halili National Agrucultural School, Sta. Maria in

Bulacan, many young children were experiencing several solar activities with great enthusiasm.

Solar Exhibition on the National Disaster Awareness Day in Pakistan

On the 13th of Octo-ber, a solar exhibi-tion with hundreds of visitors was held by the Pakistan Boy Scouts Association at the National Di-saster Awareness Day. It was shown, why solar energy is an ideal alternative energy source after natural disasters.

Jota-Joti Campfire talk about SgS with Solar Ambassador Bernando De Leon

Solar Cooking for the JOTA-JOTI in Pakistan

On the 22nd of October 2017, the Pakistan Boy Scouts Association was using the JOTI 2017 Activities to demonstrate solar cooking. Therefore, rice was being cooked and different types of solar cookers being showcased at the National Headquarters in Islamabad,

Scouts go Solar at the 3rd Regional Jamborette in Nepal-Biratnagar

On the 23rd of October 2017, the Nepalese Solar Ambassador Kamal Chandra Kafle was launching a Scouts go Solar activity at the 3rd Regional Jam-borette in Nepal-Biratnagar. They were playing the bottle-tempera-ture and sighting disc game, used solar gadgets such as the solar radio and experienced with the solar water fountain.

More Solar Badges for Pakistan

On the 29th of October, the Alyabad Scout group was having their Solar badge training. They were building and using sundials and producing solar art with wood panels. The group measured the temperature of the sun by concentrating it onto a sighting disc and experimented how much solar energy is needed to power 2 light bulbs.

November

1st Scouts go Solar Training in Zimbabwe

Through the commitment of the new Solar Ambassador Paddington Johannes, the 1st Solar Instructor Training was being realised from the 10th - 12th of November at the National Headquarters of the Scout Association of Zimbab-we in Harare. The training was attended by 35 partici-pants from various parts of the country, covering 5 of the 8 provinces in Zimbabwe. The training helped the partici-pants to understand how to take advantage of solar ener-

gy daily. First of all, sunglasses were being made with the Twin Rivers School Scout group for their future outdoors solar activities.

During the three days, the participants learned how to make single and multi LED solar torches and how to build a solar suitcase. They already discussed, how solar power can be used for communities.

Producing a Solar Street Lamp Construction in

Brasil

On the 14th of November, a longer, non-portable solar lamp

has been constructed as part of the Scout Programme of

Research and Environmental Education in Goiás.

3rd Scout go Solar Activities in Afghanistan

Dezember

Scouts go Solar Workshop in Mexico

The Solar Ambassador Enrique Noriega Trozzino realised a Scouts go Solar workshop for five Scout groups on the 3rd of December at Azcapot-zalco in Mexico City. They built a box cooker, made solar water disin-fection, solar filters, sun-glasses, sundials and solar art, played the temperature-bottle game and sang their own solar song. 144 badges were given away in total, including, for example, 16 badges for Rover Scouts, 22 for adults with special needs and the Iztapalapa Scout pro-vince staff and 7 for the SGS staff.

The team showed the usage of several solar

gadgets as well as the complex solar suitcase.

Additionally, the team informed the Scouts about the possibilities renewable energy brings and its role in climate action. They encouraged the Scouts to switch to renewable energy and influence others by organizing their own Solar Roadshow.

Scouts go Solar Workshop during the Aztec New Fire Ceremony in Mexico

From the 9th to the 10th of December, a Scouts go Solar workshop was realised at Cerro de la Estrella in Iztapalapa, México City- the place, where Aztecs used to renew the World every 52 years with the New Fire ceremony.

And many Scouts of many different age groups joined to have Scouts go Solar activities and earn their own Scouts go Solar Badge.

The solar fountain was being showcased and the temperature-bottle game being played. The participants were not only cooking with big parabolic cookers but also building DIY solar cookers themselves. Sunglasses have also been built and solar art burned into wood panels by many enthusiastic Scouts.

Solar Exhibition at the International Human Rights Day in Pakistan

On the 10th of December 2017- the International Human Rights Day, the Pakistan Boy Scouts Asso-ciation launched a solar exhibition in Islamabad. Hun-dreds of visitors, amongst them go-vernment officials, students, child-ren, staff mem-bers of different NGOs and social activists came to inform them-

selves about the usage of solar energy. Amongst them, the Pakistan Girl Guides also showed an interest to start Scouts go Solar themselves.

1st Scouts go Solar Jamboree in Thailand

The National Scout Organization of Thailand was organising its 1st Scouts go Solar Jamboree from the 11th to the 15th of December at the Vajiravudh Scout Camp, Chonburi in Thailand. The camp was attended by around 3’500 Scouts from all over Thailand and 100 Scouts from overseas.

Many activities took place: Para-bolic cookers and solar lamps and system were showcased. For everyone to participate, the Thai NSO successfully combined Scouts go Solar games with their own games. Thus, sundials, sunglasses and LED lamps were being built and solar bug and boat races were being played.

Scouts go Solar at the Navotas City Council Christmas Camp on the Philippines

The Scouts go Solar team Philippines from the Brighton Venturers conducted a solar workshop with 180 participants during the Navotas City Coun-cil Christmas Camp on Mt Makiling at Los Banos Laguna on the Philippines. The Brigh-ton Venturers explained the usage and advantages of solar energy. Solar gadgets like the solar shower bag, solar char-gers and the solar cooker were shown and toys like solar insects and cars were played with. Furthermore, the solar suitcase and its technical com-ponents was explained and its purposes during natural catas-trophes highlighted.
