MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT – JEAN HOLLEBONEThe excursion to Purdon Fen in June occurred on a bright, warm, beautiful day when the ladyslipper orchids (Cypripedium reginae) and the pitcher plant flowers were at their absolute peak.A small group of intrepid OOS orchidists explored the boardwalk finding two species of orchidsand lots of other flowers in bloom, then took a short hike to Purdon Pond where they saw evenmore pitcher plants in large clumps waving their maroon blooms. We ended the day with lunchand a pleasant social hour near the parking lot.

The SOOS Summerfest was a success as Phil Spence, the guest speaker from Australia, and a former director ofthe Botanical Garden in Port Moresby, New Guinea gave an interesting talk on the Latouria dendrobiums and thentreated us to a film of the 1998 expedition he led into the interior of New Guinea to find specimens of orchidscollected in 1908 by the German botanist Schlechter which were destroyed in Berlin during WWII and known onlyfrom Schlecter's book Orchids of New Guinea. The expedition included 3 Australian scientists and over 100 porterswho carried the gear, specimens and other supplies. After surviving horrendous terrain, almost constant rain, leeches which dripped off the trees, hacking their way through dense jungle and scrambling up stony creeks andrivers, they passed through 5 eco zones to reach the Touricelli mountains where they found a very rich and pristineflora and collected over 600 species of orchids, of which 150 were previously unknown. The shots of the countrysidewere dazzling but clearly showed what an arduous trip it was. The plants Phil had for sale were small but inimmaculate condition and several OOS members took advantage of the opportunity to purchase some rarelyavailable Australian Dendrobium, Sarcochilus and Cymbidium species. The evening before, Terry and DougKennedy hosted a barbecue which was very pleasant and a good opportunity to talk to folks from SOOS, theOSRBG, Durham and other orchid societies.

Now we are about to start a new season. André Couture has prepared an exciting list of speakers and events for thenew season. Orchids 101 is returning in September. And do look out for the two opportunities to purchase mail orderorchids which are described elsewhere in Spike.

Looking forward to seeing you all in September,

From: Cathy Loucks [[email protected]]Sent: July-06-12 6:29 PM

Subject: The Monkey Orchid

Nature doesn't need an audience. These wonderful orchids comefrom the south-eastern| Ecuadorian and Peruvian cloud forestsfrom elevations of 1000 to 2000 meters and as such not manypeople throughout history got to see them. However, thanks tointrepid collectors we do get to see this wonderful Monkey Orchid.Someone didn't need much imagination to name it though, let'sface it.

Its scientific name is Dracula simia, the last part nodding towards the fact that thisremarkable orchid bears more than a passing resemblance to a monkey's face, although wewon't go as far as to be species specific on this one. The Dracula (genus) part of its namerefers to the strange characteristic of the two long spurs of the sepals, reminiscent of thefangs of a certain Transylvanian count of film and fiction fame.

The orchid was only named in 1978 by the botanist Luer but is in a family containing over 120 species mostly foundin Ecuador. Up in the cloud mountains the monkey orchid can flower at any time, it is not season specific. Its scentresembles that of a ripe orange.

The examples seen here are all cultivated, though it remains very rare in 'captivity'. For that reason don't make adash down to your local horticulturalist. Yet for those lucky enough to have one, if kept quite cool and in partialshade and it can thrive and flower. Like all orchids, however, it needs a lot of care and patience, so you may want toconsider a cactus instead!

If you don't quite see why this orchid gets its name, then do one thing. Move back from your screen a few feet andtake another look. Close-up, the similarity is good. From a distance, it is astounding.

Thank you very much, Cathy, for the above information.

The Scent of Scandal: Greed, Betrayal and theWorld’s Most Beautiful OrchidBy Craig Pittman. 2012. University Press of Florida,Gainesville. Hardcover. 305 pages. Black-and-whitephotographs, color cover.

Book Review:The following is a condensed version of a book review foundon the AOS’ web site, www.aos.org .

Published in 2012 by the University Press of Florida, this booktargets the general reading audience rather than the seriousorchid hobbyist. The book is clearly not intended to be atreatise about the orchid itself, nor the good things that havehappened since its debut. It is, however, an eye opener of agood read into the intrigue behind an important discovery in theorchid world, a cast of infamous characters, and a seeminglyinnocuous and benign institution. Pittman, as an experiencednewspaper reporter and writer, has grasped the essence of agood story and attained his stated purpose to recount eventsthat took place in Florida during the far-reaching, scandalousaffair concerning the slowest moving of all pets, an orchid. Hisacutely honed ability to ignite a sense of excitement andincredulity is evident in the fast-paced, lively text, and heunfailingly ends each chapter with an enigmatic quote, problemor question, creating an intense need to know more.

ORCHID SOCIETY OF GREAT BRITAIN JOURNALThe August-September-October 2012 journal of the Orchid Society ofGreat Britain has arrived. OOS members who are receiving this journalvia Margaret Haydon can pick up their copy from Margaret at theSeptember meeting.

This publication is a lovely piece of work put together by the OSGBEditor and Librarian, Lady Samantha Hurley. There are numerousphotographs throughout each journal taken by Lady Samantha and thePresident of the OSGB, Dr. Henry Oakeley, who spoke at our November2009 monthly meeting.

Janet Johns, who read the OOS’ OSGB Journal, noticed a short articleby Henry Oakley concerning Taiwan orchids appearing on sale tablesthat are potted very tightly in Sphagnum moss and tiny, clear flexi-plasticpots with inadequate drainage holes. Orchids in such condition displayvery poor or almost no roots and die very quickly. Dr. Oakleyrecommends such orchids be immediately repotted into proper pots withyour normal compost.

Thank you, Janet, for drawing this information to our members’attention.

FINANCIAL STATEMENTSThe 2011-12 Audited Financial Statements are included here for the information of Society members. In brief, theSociety had a surplus of $ 4,353.14. The surplus was the result of lesser than expected expenses for the operationsof the Society, namely for Programme activities and the attendance at out-of-town shows, as well as an increase inrevenues from the Orchid Show, namely higher admission revenues as well as an increase of vendors’ sale tablefees and an increase in vendors.

The Society would like to thank Hélène Martin who graciously donated her time to do the audit. Hélène has been anactive member of the Society for many years and was formally the Society’s Treasurer.
