President’s Message

Hi Everyone, My thanks to Dr. Leslie Ee from the Southern Ontario Orchid Society for his interesting and entertaining talk about Phalaenopsis violacea variety indigo. Thanks also to Terry Kowalczuk from Flora Peculia for bringing such a good selection of plants for sale. I hope you were all able to buy something special for your collection!

On a personal note, I will be missing the Show for the first time in many years – I have been Show Chair almost every year since 1996, but this year I am away on vacation. I am confident that everything is in good hands with our Co-Chairs Janet and Jan, as well as everyone on this year’s committee, but I will certainly miss the excitement of seeing everything coming together on the big day. As with most things, the more involved you are the more you get out of it, and I am pleased to see that so many people have now signed up as volunteers. Thank you all! I hope you find it enjoyable being part of the action rather than just a visitor, and who knows, maybe you will be Show Chair one of these days! I hope all goes smoothly, and I am looking forward to seeing some of your photos after I return.

Dave Cooper

Orchidophilia 2018 We have one new addition to our vendor list: J & L Orchids. You can check out all the vendors at http://www.ottawaorchidsociety.com/vendors.html Thank you to the many of you who have volunteered to help out at the show. If you are wondering what you actually signed up for and when, you can contact Michael Barker, [email protected]. If you want to volunteer but have not yet signed up, there are still a few more spaces. Remember, volunteers get free admission! All members who volunteer at the show are invited to gather at the RA Fieldhouse Restaurant on Saturday evening after 5:00 pm when the show closes. Last year there was quite a crowd of vendors and people from other societies getting together for dinner, and it was pretty lively. We hope to see you there, tired but happy. The menu is basic, consisting of hamburgers, sandwiches, etc. This

can be seen at racentre.com (follow the links). Please let us know if you

plan to attend the dinner, as we have to let the restaurant know how many to expect. You can email [email protected], or let us know at the show on Saturday afternoon.

Your Co-Chairs,

Janet and Jan

Orchidophilia Members’ Sales Table If you have plants for sale at the Members’ Sales Table at our 2018 Show, please read these Guidelines for registration and fill out this plant list Form before you bring your plants to the RA Centre. (The Guidelines and Form are in the same file, which may also be accessed from the OOS website.) Each plant must be well-rooted and healthy and must have two (2) plastic tags: one tag with the plant’s full name, and a second tag with your name, the corresponding number from your plant list, and the sale price. Because the first question a buyer asks is, “What does it look like?” a small photo of the flower attached to the pot or to a tag in the pot will help sell your plants. You can try Google for images and print a small picture. The plants or other items for sale must be delivered with the plant list and tags to the sales table between 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Friday, April 20, 2018. Questions? Contact [email protected] or at 613-808-6581.

March Raffle I’d like to thank those who brought items for last month’s raffle. We sold more than $100 worth of tickets! Your generosity is appreciated.

Members’ Corner Some of you may have heard a recent broadcast on CBC Radio about orchids – it was aired on the Ideas program March 22 with the title “Suggestive, romantic, sexy orchids”. If you missed it, you can hear it at http://www.cbc.ca/radio/ideas/suggestive-romantic-sexy-orchids-1.4152316. The CBC also includes a summary on their website with photos, as well as biographies on the contributors to the program. It is well worth a listen!

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Please welcome our new member who joined the Orchid Society at the March meeting: Jola Choynowski. Thank you all for your continued support.

The Show Experience

One of my friends asked me by email what a show process looks like. This is my description, and I thought it may be of interest to more people. From the OOS meeting prior to the weekend of the show I take home any plants that people give me. During the week (as late as Thursday night), people drop off more plants.

Sometimes I’ve been able to fit everything in the car. Other times I’ve had as many as fifty plants, and even with a van had to repackage the plants to get them to fit. I keep several boxes of props in the attic, including bark and pieces of driftwood. I avoid stones or rocks because I am not getting any younger and they are heavy.

When loading the car or van, I make sure that the plants are protected against the weather. That means not just the cold or heat, but also sunshine -- a plant sitting in the car with sunshine streaming on it can get sunburned in 5 minutes. The local grocery stores receive plants in very nice boxes which are destroyed when the plants are removed, so I ask for several boxes of different heights.

At most shows, the plants have to be registered by 8:00 or 9:00 pm Friday, which is setup day. You can pre-register by internet. The time when you can start setting up varies (for example, 5:00 pm in Montreal, earlier in Ottawa).

After packing the plants in the car or van, I drive to the show location with no more than 12 hours’ break because if it is cold, the plants could cool off too much. After arrival I orient myself. Once I know where to set up, and once the setup time has arrived, I borrow a dolly if I haven’t brought my own, and I start bringing everything to the display area.

I do the construction, and if it is awkward-looking I cover it with fabric so the construction is invisible. Then I install the plants, and add green plants, bark, moss, stones, etc. to show less fabric. The decorative (non-orchid) green plants must not have flowers, as only orchid flowers can be seen. I register the plants and get back white registration tags, write labels on black Bristol board making sure each plant name is properly spelled, place each black label close to the flower, and attach the white registration label close to the flower. If I am participating in the judging process: Saturday morning breakfast at 7:00 am, judging teams announced before 8:00 am, judging has to finish before the noon opening of the show. Before the show opens, I remove the white registration tags and note which plants have won which prize to have a record of prizes. On Sunday the show closes at 5:00 pm, and all hell breaks loose because the out-of-town teams want to go home as soon as possible and the locals want to put away the tables, etc. All the societies are very nice to their visitors and their own volunteers in that they provide food and drinks at the show.
