The development of the Mercedes-Benz
G-Model commenced in 1972, when a
cooperation agreement was signed between
Daimler-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz,
Austria. The decision to start series production
of the G-Class was taken in 1975. At the same
time it was decided to construct a new plant in
Graz, where the vehicle has been built mainly
by hand throughout its time in production.

Michael Schumacher joins Ferrari, having signed a multi-year contract with the Italian team for a reputed annual fee of US$25 Million (later to be raised
to US$31). He becomes the first motor racing star to enter the Top 10 wealthiest athletes in the world, second only to basketball star Michael Jordan in
overall annual income.
McLaren announce the end of the longest sponsorship association, with Marlboro,
signing instead with with West.
Reigning CART champion Jacques Villeneuve joins Williams, grabbing pole position
on his F1 debut at the new Australian GP venue in Melbourne. He later wins his first
race at Nurburgring.
Olivier Panis scores shock win in Monte Carlo, after Michael Schumacher crashes
on opening lap after being on pole and Damon Hill suffers an engine failure while
leading.
Michael Schumacher scores dominant first win in recalcitrant Ferrari in Spanish rain.
Renault and Elf announce departure from Formula One at the end of 1997.
Bernie Ecclestone launches digital TV at the British GP at Silverstone. The service
would commence live coverage at the German race two weeks later. Swipe cards
are also introduced to control entry to the F1 paddock.
Williams sacks Damon Hill just before Monza, despite Hill's success.
Damon Hill wins World Championship in Suzuka and becomes the first son of a
World Champion to grab the title himself.
Tom Walkinshaw buys Arrows Formula One team.
Legendary motor sports journalist Denis Jenkinson dies after suffering a stroke.
1997
Adria Newey leaves Williams and joins rivals McLaren as technical director.
Stewart-Ford enter Grand Prix racing under the chairmanship of three time champion Jackie Stewart. The team vows to win a World Championship in
five years, and promises to run a tobacco-free sponsored car.
The Michael Schumacher-Ross Brawn-Rory Byrne combination is reunited when Brawnand Byrne joins Ferrari as technical director and chief designer.
Damon Hill ends up at Arrows, and retires on the formation lap at the first race.
Senna trial begins. Five principals from the Williams team, including Frank Williams, Adrian Newey and Patrick Head, are charged with manslaughter.
Bridgestone enters Formula One supplying just under half the teams.
Olivier Panis shatters legs in crash at Canadian Grand Prix.
Gerhard Berger misses three races with sinus trouble, but returns to win in Germany. After the race, he announces his retirement from F1 at the end of
the season.
Damon Hill almost wins in Hungary, but electrical problems see Jacques Villeneuve pass him on the final lap.
Prodrive boss Dave Richards replaced the flamboyant Flavio Briatore in charge of the Benetton team as of the Luxembourg GP.
Jacques Villeneuve is banned from Japanese Grand Prix after several yellow-flag infringements, while Michael Schumacher wins to set up a showdown
in Jerez.
First three drivers clock exactly the same time in qualifying for final race at Jerez. Michael Schumacher leads until Jacques Villeneuve makes a move
down the inside at a hairpin, and Schumacher turns in on Villeneuve, damaging Villeneuve's car and putting himself out. Mika Hakkinen scores his
maiden win in dubious circumstances, as Villeneuve is crowned the World Champion.
Michael Schumacher is disqualified from the 1997 championship, but retains his wins and
points. Williams and McLaren are cleared of allegations that they colluded the results of the
Jerez GP.
At Senna trial, all the accused are cleared.
Goodyear announce they are leaving F1 after 1998.
Ken Tyrrell sells his racing outfit to what would become in 1999 a new team - British
American Racing - run by Craig Pollock, Jacques Villeneuve's former manager, and financed
by British American Tobacco.

Dr Ferdinand 'Ferry' Porsche dies.
FIA introduce new rules mandating narrower track and grooved tyres.
David Coulthard lets Mika Hakkinen win in Australia, later revealing the two had a prior agreement that whoever reaches the first corner first would win
the race.
McLaren's 'turning' brake is banned but has little effect on speed.
Sidepod 'X-wings' banned despite being used for a year.
Ford buys long-time engine partner Cosworth from German car maker Audi.
Michael Schumacher wins in rain-soaked Britain, despite crossing the finish
line in pitlane taking a stop-go penalty.
Schumacher also wins in Hungary after running almost at qualifying speed for
25 laps.
Jordan finish 1-2 in Belgium to take their first win, but controversy erupts after
Michael Schumacher collides with David Coulthard while lapping him,
Schumacher being restrained when both drivers returned to pit lane.
Mika Hakkinen wins his first championship in the final race of the year at
Suzuka.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway announces the construction of a road course
within its famous 2.5 Mile Oval track. The Inaugural race is scheduled for
September 2000.
1999
Frank Williams is knighted in the British New Year's Honours list for his success in Formula One.
Eddie Irvine scores his first win at Australia.
Long time Formula One designer, Dr Harvey Postlethwaite, dies of a heart
attack while observing a test session for Honda. Following his death, Honda
ditches plans to return to Formula One as a team and instead signs a contract
to supply BAR with engines as of the 2000 season.
Michael Schumacher breaks his leg in a first lap accident at the British Grand
Prix. He would miss the next seven races, leaving Eddie Irvine to mount the
Ferrari title challenge, with Mika Salo as Schumacher's replacement.
Ford buys StewartGrandPrix team. DaimlerChrysler, Mercedes owner, buys
stakes in McLaren to further consolidate its partnership.
Eddie Irvine wins Austrian Grand Prix after Mika Hakkinen is punted by
teammate David Coulthard on the opening lap, Hakkinen recovering to third.
2000
The 2000 Formula One season was the 51st FIA Formula One World Championship season.
Michael Schumacher became Ferrari's first World Drivers Champion for 21 years. Schumacher clinched the drivers' title at the penultimate race of the
season, the Japanese G
rand Prix.
Ferrari also successfully defended their constructors' title.
The season was marred by one death: a race marshall was killed at the 2000 Italian Grand
Prix at Monza. The marshall was struck by a loose tyre from one of the Jordans.
Michael Schumacher considered quitting the sport as this was the first death in F1 since
driver Ayrton Senna's in 1994.
To keep costs down, the V10 engine configuration was made mandatory in 2000 so that
engine builders would not develop and experiment with other configurations. The V10
configuration had been the most popular since the banning of turbocharged engines in 1989,
and no other configuration had been used since 1998.

2001
The 2001 Formula One season was the 52nd FIA Formula One World Championship season.
Michael Schumacher won the title with a record margin of 58 points, after achieving nine victories and five second places.
The season also marked the reintroduction of traction control, with the FIA permitting its use starting at the Spanish Grand Prix. Traction control had
been banned since 1994.
2001 was a year of beginnings and ends in Formula One. In the form of Minardi’s
Fernando Alonso and Sauber’s Kimi Räikkönen, two future world champions were
taking to the grid for the very first time at the season opener in Melbourne.
Exciting Colombian talent and former CART champion Juan Pablo Montoya was
also making his F1 bow at Williams.
There were new beginnings for French companies Renault and Michelin. After
four years out of the sport, Renault returned to supply engines to the Benetton
team, while Michelin’s comeback as a tyre supplier would provide Bridgestone
with competition for the first time since Goodyear left the sport at the end of the
1998 season.
On the other hand though, the sport was to lose some memorable characters at
the end of the year. Double world champion Mika Häkkinen would initially
announce his intention to take a one year sabbatical; but eventually, as expected,
this became full-time retirement.
Also racing for the last time was Jean Alesi, who passed the 200 race mark shortly before his final Grand Prix in Japan.
It was the end for commentator Murray Walker too; for so long the beloved ‘voice of F1’ in the UK. He gave his final commentary at the United States
Grand Prix (which would also turn out to be Mika Häkkinen’s last victory in the sport).
The Prost and Benetton names would disappear from the sport at the end of 2001; Prost folded due to a lack of finances while Benetton was rebranded
as Renault after the French manufacturer bought the team outright.
The championship was won with ease by Michael Schumacher, who finished a mammoth 58 points clear of David Coulthard in second place.
Williams drivers Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya would both score their maiden wins in the sport, at San Marino and Italy respectively.
On the other hand McLaren would not enjoy as much success as they had in recent times, but they would still do enough to also secure four wins.
But it was not enough to stop the rampant Schumacher, whose haul of 123 points was more than enough for his fourth world championship (equalling
the achievements of Alain Prost). With Rubens Barrichello performing solidly in the second car, Ferrari also won the Constructor’s Championship at a
canter.
2002
The 2002 Formula One season was the 53rd FIA Formula One World Championship season.
It appeared to be nothing more than a battle for second or third place in the driver's
standings for those competing because Michael Schumacher finished first or second
in every race except for the Malaysian Grand Prix, where he finished third.
He won 11 Grands Prix, winning the title by a record-67 points, and beating the
previous record set by Nigel Mansell in the 1992 Formula One season. This record
would not be beaten until 2004, also by Schumacher.
He would also set the record for shortest time in which the World Drivers
Championship had been clinched, securing the title with a win at the French Grand
Prix, with 6 races to go in the season.

Discovery of America
Christopher Columbus discovered this unknown land in 1492.
Colonization of America
The Mayflower was the ship that trans-ported English Separatists, known today as the Pilgrims, from
Plymouth in England to the New World in 1621. There were 102 passengers. This voyage has become
an iconic story in some of the earliest annals of American history, with its story of death and of survival in the
harsh New England winter environment.
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was a heroic event which took place on 17th December 1773 in Boston, Massachusetts.
This act of defiance was executed to ban the Townshend Act. The Townshend Act was implemented in 1766
and allowed the British Parliament to tax American colonies on tea, paper, paint and various other items.
American colonists rebelled and started boycotting all goods imported from England. To control the ongoing
agitation, the government canceled taxes on all goods, except tea. The Boston Tea Party is one of the most
popular events in the history of the nation and is considered a landmark in the American War of Independence
against European colonies.
Independence from Great Britain
On 4th July 1776, the Continental Congress (representing all the thirteen colonies) signed the Declaration of
Independence. the Revolution of 1776-1783 created the United States. This meant freedom for all the thirteen
colonies who were struggling for independence from Great Britain. The Declaration contained possible
explanations on why the thirteen colonies deserved independence from British rule. While Thomas Jefferson is
known as the author of the Declaration of Independence, there are others who were involved in the drafting:
Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and John Adams. It was finally signed by 56 individuals
representing the thirteen colonies.
American Civil War
The Civil War is the central event in America's historical consciousness. While the Revolution of 1776-1783
created the United States, the Civil War of 1861-1865 determined what kind of nation it would be. The
American Civil War was fought between Confederate States of America (Southern Slave States) and the Union
States a.k.a United States of America (All Free States). The primary causes of this war are still debated;
however, historians believe that differences between the states existed right from the start and then came a
time when talks proved futile and violence gripped the entire nation. The split between the Southern States and
the Union led to four years of intense war and bloodshed that killed millions. There were also many cultural
differences, but the real motives behind the Civil War are still unclear.
American Immigration History
Immigration can be viewed in four sections: The colonial period, the mid-19th century, the start of the 20th
century, and post-1965. Each period brought distinct national groups, races and ethnicities to the United
States. During the 17th century, approximately 400,000 English people migrated to Colonial America.[13] Over
half of all European immigrants to Colonial America during the 17th and 18th centuries arrived as indentured

servants.[14] The mid-19th century saw mainly an influx from northern Europe; the early 20th-century mainly
from Southern and Eastern Europe; post-1965 mostly from Latin America and Asia.
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
An unforgettable American tragedy (1865), the assassination of Abraham Lincoln is yet another important
chapter in America's history. History states that the defeat of the Southern States by the Union Territories
during the Civil War led to the cold-blooded murder of Lincoln (who was the commander of the Union Army).
The man who assassinated Lincoln was obviously a Southern sympathizer, John Wilkes Booth - a stage actor.
Booth considered Lincoln wholly responsible for the Southern destruction and the murder of his Southern
brothers. He shot Lincoln on the back of the head.
Transcontinental Railroads
During 1869, transcontinental railroad was built in the United States of America by the Central Pacific Railroad
of California and the Union Pacific Railroad. It links the United States from east to west.
Electric Power Revolution
In 1870, carbon filament lamp was developed by Sir Joseph Swan and Thomas Edison. This bulb is similar to
the electric bulb which we use today.
Invention of the Telephone
In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell, invented a device called Telephone.
Aeronautics:
Humankind has always dreamed of taking to the sky. In 1903, two American brothers, Wilbur and Orville
Wright converted the dreams into reality by building the first real flying machine called 'Airplane'. The 20th
century witnessed the most influential growth in transportation.
Model T Ford:
Model T is an automobile built in 1908, by Ford motor company. The car was very popular during those times
and it was affordable to middle class people also. The assembly line innovation of the Ford company made the
car very popular among Americans.
World War I
In 1917 the US declares war on Germany Hailed as the Great War. World War I is responsible for at least 3
million casualties. The US had maintained a neutral stand in the war. It was under the leadership of President
Woodrow Wilson, who was a peace lover and wanted to avoid the war. However, Germany's constant
submarine warfare on US passenger ships and its attempt to trigger the US-Mexico war again caused the
former to declare war on Germany. Hence US inadvertently got involved in the Great War. To weaken the
British, Germany started targeting all the cargo ships coming towards England with their U-Boats (submarines).
Eventually, they started targeting any vessel that was heading towards England. In this warfare, it sank the
British cruise ship Lusitania which killed 1198 passengers in which 128 were Americans. This incident was
instrumental in pushing America to war.
The Great Economic Depression
This depression of 1930 kills the US economy. Economic historians usually attribute the start of the Great
Depression to the sudden devastating collapse of US stock market prices on October 29, 1929, known as Black
Tuesday. The Great Depression (1929-39) was the deepest and longest-lasting economic downturn in the

history of the Western industrialized world. In the United States, the Great Depression began soon after the
stock market crash of October 1929, which sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors.
Over the next several years, consumer spending and investment dropped, causing steep declines in industrial
output and rising levels of unemployment as failing companies laid off workers. By 1933, when the Great
Depression reached its highth, some 13 to 15 million Americans were unemployed and nearly half of the
country’s banks had failed. The relief and reform measures put into place by President Franklin D. Roosevelt
helped lessen the worst effects of the Great Depression in the 1930’s.
Computers
In 1936 the first freely programmable computer was invented. And look at what has evolved since then.
World War II-The Attack on Pearl Harbor:
The US Enters World War II on December 7, 1941 due to the attack of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese.. Prior to
the attack, the US was merely a spectator, or rather a secret supporter of Britain in World War II. On
December 7, 1941, at least 353 Japanese war planes attacked Pearl Harbor causing grave damage and killing
more than 2000 US officers. This incident was the last straw and it entered the World War II as an active
member, thereby leading to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The World War II was bigger than any
conflict that mankind had ever seen. It was one of the most disastrous battles and caused more deaths than
World War I. It was the first time that the US was an active member and was the only country that used an
atom bomb in the war. The US emerged a winner and a super power after the end of this war.
The Korean War
In 1950 when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the
boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western
Republic of Korea to the south. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War. By July, American
troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf. As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war
against the forces of international communism itself.
Assassination of President John F. Kennedy
The 35th President of the United States, was assassinated Friday, November 22, 1963. Kennedy's
assassination is still the subject of widespread debate and has spawned numerous conspiracy theories and
alternative scenarios.
Equal Civil Rights
The 1900s was one of the most controversial times in the history of the United States. It was the time when
African-Americans rose to gain equal rights in the country and marked the beginning of a movement that would
abolish racial discrimination to a larger extent. Slavery was abolished in 1865, but in many states, African-
Americans were still treated like slaves.
Martin Luther King is Assassination
Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American clergyman and civil rights leader who was fatally shot in Memphis,
Tennessee, on Thursday, April 4, 1968. He was a prominent leader of the African-American Civil Rights
Movement and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who was known for his use of nonviolence and civil disobedience.
The Vietnam War This was the prolonged struggle (1959 – 1975) between nationalist forces attempting to unify the country of Vietnam under a communist government and the United States (with the aid of the South Vietnamese)

attempting to prevent the spread of communism. Engaged in a war that many viewed as having no way to win, U.S. leaders lost the American public's support for the war. Since the end of the war, the Vietnam War has become a benchmark for what not to do in all future U.S. foreign conflicts. Electronic Fuel injection for Cars The Electronic Fuel injection for Cars was Invented in 1966 Americans Walk on the Moon Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr take first walk on the moon (1969) ATM’s The ATM was invented in 1969. Cell Phones The cell phone was invented in 1979. World Wide Web The world wide web was invented in 1990. Attack on the Twin Towers An incident America and the world will never forget, the falling of the World Trade Center was not just the fall of two tall buildings, it was the fall of humanity. On September 11, 2001, nineteen Islamic extremists, on the orders of al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, hijacked four passenger jets, and crashed two of them in the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center complex. The third jet was targeted at the Pentagon and the fourth one was crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The number of lives lost is still not clear; however, statistics say that almost 5000 innocent lives were lost. This incident triggered a decade long-war against terrorism, in which the United States invaded Afghanistan and demolished the rule of Taliban which was harboring al-Qaeda.

War on Iraq
The United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Poland invade Iraq (2003) to destroy the weapons of mass
destruction acquired by the Iraqi government, and to overthrow Saddam Hussein's oppressive rule, which
eventually led to his capture near Baghdad.
Osama Bin Laden Killed
In 2011, the head of al-Qaeda; Osama bin Laden was killed by United States armed forces in Pakistan.

This is an absolutely beautiful drive. We will be starting In Longmont, proceed through Estes Park
into Rocky Mountain National Park. We will then proceed through Rocky Mountain National Park,
over Trail Ridge and with our final destination being Grand Lake Lodge for lunch. If you have never
been to the Grand Lake Lodge, it is absolutely beautiful, the food is very good and let’s not forget
the gorgeous views.

Trail Ridge, Grand Lake Diaper Drive Outline

This will be a Diaper Drive for the Joshua Station Organization. The Joshua Station Organization is an organization helping families make the transition from homelessness to a heathy, stable living environment. Please bring a box of diapers to donate. There will be a $5.00 per car registration fee. The cut off for registration will be July 16, 2016. Send
registration form and fee to Mike Redel. All contact information is on the form.
We will be meeting on Saturday morning at 9am in North Longmont, in the Southwest corner of the Wall Mart
parking lot at Highway 66 and Main St. (US 287). From Denver take I-25 North to Co. 66, 2nd Longmont exit and
turn left (West). The Wall Mart will be on the left as you approach US 287 (Main St). When we leave the
parking lot the route is to proceed west through Lyons and on to Estes Park. We will enter Rocky Mountain
National Park to travel over Trail Ridge Road. This is also US Highway 34. The estimated travel time to the
Grand Lake Lodge is 2 hrs if you drive straight through without stopping. We plan for 1.5 hours for stops and
site seeing. Due to summertime traffic we will not travel as a caravan but as individuals with the schedule
stated. Each car will be responsible to make it to the Grand Lake Lodge around 1pm. The Lodge has thrown us
a little curve. We will have to go in as we arrive to be seated as couples, 4 to a table, and go through their
seating sign- up sheet. So we will not all be together, nor will be eating at the same time. The menu ranges
from about $15.00 and up per person.
There is a $20 per car Park entry fee that is good for the day if you round trip over the road. The return trip is
your choice. You can go back over Trail Ridge the way we came, or Drive down to Granby and take US Highway
40 to I-70 and back to Denver. This route is approximately 125 miles to Denver.
General Information:
Trail Ridge is a beautiful run with many pullouts and parking areas to view the scenery. You will be at high
altitude so be careful to drink plenty of water and not to exert yourself to much in the thin air. There will be
summer traffic conditions so we just have to be patient and enjoy the ride. The road is paved all the way
unless construction or repairs are in progress. Weather can be fickle ranging from high 80’s to snow and all in
between. Respect storm clouds, Lightning is a real danger so use common sense. There is a store on the
summit but there is limited parking and I would recommend not stopping there. There are restrooms along
the way for those needs. This will be a great summer drive for our members so plan for the date.
