At 2 p.m. sharp all volunteers were ready to welcome a crowd of children and adults for a fun-filled afternoon. The theme this year ‘Around the World’ was reflected in a variety of small games that represented the 7 continents of the world. A huge hit was the sumo wrestling arena; the 3 parent volunteers David, Dave and Jos – who worked a continuous shift for more than 3 hours – ended the day with sore arms from lifting up the contestants from the wrestling mat whose suits didn’t allow them to stand up by themselves! It took a good hour for the first students to hand in their full games passports for the passport raffle, but from then on an eager crowd of children continued to flock to the raffle area in the hope to hear their name called out and pick one of the many donated prizes.

Pretty for Elvis an Marilyn

Lots of girls used the opportunity to get a glamorous make-over at the hairdresser’s and make-up artist’s stand, before having their picture taken with Elvis and Marilyn at the Hollywood picture booth. The Free Factor Stage Show, beautifully organized by Naomi (grade 8) and Sierra (grade 9) allowed a glimpse of the hidden musical and entertainment talents within the student community. Well done, girls!

Summerfest 2009Summer just arrived in time; bright, sunny skies prevailed on Saturday, 13 June for this year’s edition of the LIS Summerfest.

Not one visitor would leave the Summerfest with an empty stomach; the food area offered a wide variety of international foods to satisfy everyone’s taste, ranging from donated cakes to ice cream, nachos, vegetarian pasta and ciabattas. The perfect round-off of this beautiful day was the concert of the Leipzig International Choir, assisted by the John Arman Jazz Ensemble, performing songs from West Side Story and Porgy and Bess. The whole event was carried by the huge number of volunteers (we had more than 100 hours to fill, so hats off!) that ran the games, popped popcorn, sold tickets, warmed hot dogs, rinsed wine glasses …: parents, students, teachers and even persons that had no direct connection to the school. They deserve the biggest THANKS for making this Summerfest possible!

Library NewsI would like to welcome all the new students, and “welcome back” to everyone else.

My name is Deborah Curtis and I am the school librarian.

What’s new?

Last year, I was checking out your books on two different library software systems on two different computers. Maybe you have noticed that I only have one computer on my desk this year. LIS is going to be a pilot site for a library software system called Dantek Library Solutions. Dantek has been operating in schools in Scandinavian countries for more than 20 years. Having Dantek will enable us to one day access the library catalog, from any computer, via the school’s web-site. For the present, however, the catalog is still only available from the computer on my desk. Please feel free to ask me about any book you are looking for.Since our move to Schleussig , more than 2000 items have been added to the library. Based on nearly 20 years experience working in libraries, I have been trying hard to fill the gaps in our collection. The primary section now has a lot more to offer students, both for recreational reading and curricular needs. I know that our primary students have been reading more, because they are finding more that they want

Newsbank is an online newspaper/magazine database which offers full-text articles, with back files, from hundreds of magazines and newspapers from around the world. It also contains global news broadcasts, government documents and statistics. The Newbank package includes the ScienceSource Collection which covers science topics and scientist biographies.

For access outside the school:

http://infoweb.newsbank.comUsername: ra-50377Password: ra-50377

Use it for research, keeping up with current affairs, practicing English, etc.

Newsbank is better than searching the Web because it’s reliable, authoritative and non-commercial.

Anyone may take advantage of this great resource!

to read! In the secondary section, close to a hundred new teen fiction titles have been added, and many of the adult titles weeded out. There have also been significant additions to the history, social studies, German, mathematics and art sections. Nineteen classes visit the library each week to exchange their library books. All class visits are supervised, and children receive assistance from both me and their teacher in finding and choosing their library books. All books are checked out directly on the computer, which is faster and more accurate than writing names

and numbers in the borrowing book. A reserves system is now operating, so that children can be put on a wait list if the book they want is checked out. Reading, like any other skill (such as playing football or piano) requires practice. The more we practice, the better we get. Reading has an extra benefit, though: Being a good reader will also help you to

do better in all your other subjects in school.

See you at the library!

ESL Department

Welcome back and news update from the ESL (English as a Second Language) and MT (Mother Tongue) department. The ESL department is back in full swing after the summer break with many children a little “rusty” after holidays without English. Miss Helene started work straight away with beginner students in the first week of term and non beginner students from grades 2 to 8 have all been screened to make sure that they are placed in the right level groups. Grade 6, 7 and 8 students are now all studying hard and grade 1 to 5 students will begin their ESL lessons the week commencing 7th of September now that they have had the chance to settle into their new homerooms and “oil” their language skills.

Language Profile

With assessing and grouping completed, the department will now turn some of its attention towards the Mother Tongue program. Thank you to all those of you who completed a Language Profile form for your child/-ren. The school has now started to process this information and once completed we will have a better overview of the languages being spoken in your homes; this is useful information for all your children’s teachers and it also helps the ESL/MT department plan for future language instruction at LIS. If you have not yet completed a Language Profile for your child/-ren or can’t remember handing one in, then please collect a form from the reception and return it to the office, or

contact [email protected]. There will be more information about

Mother Tongue support at a later date, but please feel free to contact

us via email if you have any questions regarding ESL or MT, or if you already know that you would be interested in Mother Tongue tuition

as an extra curricular activity for your child/-ren.

A busy year in the Pre-school

But every new year comes with new challenges to take on. This year my personal challenge and with that also the task of my colleagues is to keep working on the Pre-School concept. Some of the big topics we will be thinking, learning and discussing about will be: > Settlig-in> Observation and Documentation> Multiple Intelligence and Multisensory

Teaching Strategies> Language Policy> Behavior Code> Sächsischer Bildungsplan> and many more …We stared the school year with an experiment. Some parents and children noticed the changes right away when there were no activities offered by the teacher, but instead the teacher observed the children in their play and chose activities based on the children’s interest or just joined in the childrens games and play.Don’t worry, in the second week of September,

Thanks to wonderful „old“ staff members and very energetic and commited „new“ staff members, the Pre-school started into a smooth and happy new school year.

the morning circle and all planned activities will be back. Now it is to the team to evaluate what we have learned from the little experiment and we have to come to a conclusion what we believe will be best for our children at LIS. As a teaching strategy, it is very important to us to find the right balance between structured and teacher led activities and student inquired and student led activities.

We need your help

If you have experience with one of the above mentioned topics, reading material or when you made an observation that could be helpful to us, we would very much welcome your input. We have a very busy school year ahead of us and I want to ask you for your support to make this year a great learning experience for all of us.

Thank you very much,Katrin Parker

Einschulung 2009/2010This year we welcomed over 300 children into the Primary school, but not all of them had the special ceremonial welcome that our new Grade 1 students received.

Families gathered from far and wide to celebrate the very first day of school. This German tradition, which sees the children showered with gifts and brightly coloured and elaborate Zuckertuten, is no less important at our International school. Even though our

children are well prepared for school having experienced Reception (where the children are received into the school system), it is indeed a wonderful thing to celebrate, the beginning of formal education. Mr Scheepens began the special assembly by sharing his

own memories of beginning school. The children met their

new teachers, Ms Laura Sibbitt, Ms Kathleen Wolcott and Ms Kathryn Crossman.

After plenty of photographs and a round of the school song, the children were led to their new classrooms to have a taste of first grade, while parents waited excitedly and perhaps a little anxiously on the playground. Finally, the children emerged and were greeted by a gift of helium filled balloons. The children and families gathered together, balloons clutched tightly. After a 1,2,3 from Ms Sibbitt, the children released their balloons and we watched them float prettily up and over the trees, symbolising the beginning of a long and happy journey through life and education. Public Examination Results May 2009During May 2009 our Grade 10 sat their IGCSE examinations and the Grade 12 students sat the final examinations for the IB Diploma.

The results for these were published in July (IB) and August (IGCSE) and I would like to share their success with you. The IB candidates have already received their certificates and we will present the IGCSE candidates with their in a special assembly later this semester.

IB Diploma Results

Our students were awarded grades for each subject on a 1 to 7 scale with 7 being the

highest possible and 4 being the passing mark. Up to 3 bonus points are also awarded for the combined Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge course. 24 points is the minimum requirement for the Diploma to be awarded and 45 points is the maximum.Of the 19 who obtained the full Diploma 15 were awarded a Bilingual Diploma because they sat both English and German A. This year’s results were particularly good and included our first 45 point student, Hella Buchmann. Elena Velton scored 43 and Jana Huck scored 40. Six other students scored 36 or above which is a wonderful acheivement. Our graduates and their parents and teachers who supported them can indeed by very proud of their achievement.

IGCSE Results

Our students were awarded grades for each subject on a A*, A to G scale with A* being the highest possible but all marks being a pass. Candidates who fail an examination are awarded a U (unclassified). Again, all of our students who completed the two year program were awarded the International Certificate of Education (ICE) for passing at least 7 subjects.

Thea Gersten as a child (l.) and today with Elke Urban (Schulmuseum).

Grade 12 celebrated Goethe’s 260th birthday on Friday, 28th of August 2009.

In the summer holidays I offered ‘Selbachs Sommerakademie’ (the title is meant as a joke!)- an opportunity for IB students to improve their writing skills.

Grade 9 meets Thea Gersten – The Leipzig Anne Frank

Memories of Kristallnacht and the Kinder transport .

In June Grade 9 History students visited the Schulmuseun Leipzig to meet Thea Hurst, formerly Thea Gersten and to listen to a reading of her Diary “Das Tagesbuch deer Thea Gertsen” (The Diary of Thea Gersten) written as a schoolgirl in Leipzig under Nazi rule . Thea spoke with the students of her memories of life as a Jewish school girl in Leipzig in the 1930s, the policies implemented by the Nazis, of her experiences in London following her departure from Germany on the kinder transport child rescue programme through which she ultimately escaped.Thea Gersten was seven years old when Hitler came to power in 1933, her brother Adi two years older. Their parents, Polish Jews, had moved to Leipzig before their marriage, and the children‘s early life was comfortable and secure. Their father was a successful fur trader whose adherence to strictly Orthodox Judaism sat easily alongside a taste for Leipzig‘s high-class culture.

For seven years she would write in her little book, the ordinary recollections of a young woman living through extraordinary times, before putting it away as she grew into adulthood. It would remain a private document for 60 years. Then, in 2000, she returned to Leipzig and it was then that her association with Leipzig International School began; she

her revealed the unspeakable deprivations of the ghetto and her father‘s „transfer“, on January 20 1943, to Treblinka. There, he was murdered.

An extract

„Dear Mrs Gersten,“ ends the letter, „I grieve with you for a noble and good man, a man whose goodness was greater than I have ever known Thea ended her diary in May 1947.”I feel more and more clearly that I shall not find myself truly until I can love truly,“ she wrote in one of the last entries. „I can only find happiness and satisfaction in loving and aiding, listening and caring. My truest happiness will be when I have a child.“ „I stopped writing the diary because I had found who I was in life. I had found my centre,“ she now says. She would go on to have two children with her husband, who died in 1995. After more than 60 years‘ absence, she returns frequently to Germany, touring schools and telling the children what she feels their grandparents refuse to talk about. „The Holocaust is only worth remembering after so many years if we can do something positive,“ she insists, „if we who have been through the trauma are able to show the public what today‘s asylum seekers and refugees are experiencing.“ As part of the IGCSE History programme Grade 9 students studied Nazi Germany and conducted research into Kristallnacht for their coursework, some students also took part in an adaptation of Anne Franks Diary, directed by Tom Bailey.A memorial to the victims of Kristallnacht was erected in 2000 at the former site of the Synagogue on Gottschedstrasse and is visited every year by former Leipzig citizens from all over the world. Becky Hillyer

made the first public reading of her diary to students of the school. Thea continued her diary throughout her years in exile in London and latterly Harrogate, cities in which she felt like a stranger and although safe from the horrors of the camps in Eastern Europe nonetheless still the victim of prejudice and scorn as other kids saw her not as a Jewish refugee but a German girl, in wartime, the enemy. When the war ended, the family searched everywhere for Thea’s father. Failure confirmed their fears. Thea did not learn the circumstances of his death until after her mother died in 1964, when she found a letter from a prisoner, incarcerated in the Warsaw ghetto with her father, Chaim Lazar Gersten. The letter that her mother had shielded from

The Nazis smashed this self-protective cocoon on Kristallnacht, November 10 1938. Synagogues were burned down, Jewish shops, schools and homes – including the Gerstens‘ – were destroyed, and the men dragged off to concentration camps. Temporarily protected by his Polish citizenship, Thea‘s father fled to Warsaw to prepare the way for the family‘s emigration to America. Adi secured a precious place on the Kinder transport, the British child-rescue operation. And Thea Gersten began her diary.

Summer Holiday Review

What do these two dates have in common?

Leipzig’s most famous student was born 260 years ago – a reason for the grade 12 literature course to celebrate in style: candles, cake, courtly dresses and refined language helped us to create the authentic feeling of the elegant 18th century society … in our classroom!

Nie Gefühl des Mangels, nie Mangel des Gefühls!

As 16-year-old Goethe did not fancy his law studies in Leipzig, he soon discovered other gifts that paved the way to become a truly

universal genius in so many diverse fields. We looked at Goethe’s impressive life and each student took over the role of one part, thus creating many Goethes and extending this life line to girl friends, mistresses, sponsors and friends. Therefore we looked a pretty mixed group when we strolled through Leipzig’s city center after school: Goethe as a child in Frankfurt a. M., a student Goethe, a Goethe in Italy, his girl friend Friedrike Brion, Charlotte Buff, Anna Amalia, Charlotte von Stein, Goethe’s wife Christiane Vulpius, and his famous friend Schiller as well as Johann Peter Eckermann, Goethe’s reliable trustee and friend. In spite of the heat, Sophia, Randy and Felix managed to keep their wigs on and gracefully

played their part. They attracted lots of interested looks, especially Friederike Brion – Josephine was her spitting image – and many photos were taken by passer-bys. Tourists in particular seemed to know what a special day we celebrated (Are you the Goethe society?) In Auerbachs Keller we refrained from imitating Goethe’s love for a good bottle of wine and enjoyed our well earned cool drink! The last picture was taken in front of Schiller’s statue in honour of the remarkable friendship between Schiller and Goethe. J. P. Eckermann (Gisela Selbach)

Holidays? What holidays? you might ask as an IB student. Internal Assessment, Extended Essay, detailed literature studies, experiments …And on top of it all Selbach’s Summer Academy!*But of course, this has been just a leisurely offer to the German literature course, now grade 12, with the aim to improve essay writing skills. We focused on various methods of establishing text coherence while enjoying the warmth and sun in Saxony at the same time…. and a game of badminton to round off our intensive work. *meant as a joke Gisela Selbach

6MJ and 6SKS are off to a good start as they face the excitement and responsibility of Secondary School.

On August 21st, each Form Class enjoyed a whole day together, where they got to know themselves, each other and their Form Teacher

better. The day was spent swimming, eating and participating in drama exercises that emphasized team-building and confidence-building skills. Secondary school is a huge jump from Primary school. Using your Student Planner well and staying organized will help ensure a successful first year in Secondary School. There are also many activities students can participate in. It is

important to get your self involved – not just for the fun of it but also to make friends with other Secondary students.Good luck to all of you for a fantastic first year in Secondary School! M. Jackson (6MJ) & S. Schleif (6SKS)

The IB Art Students and Mr. Lewis are eager to see you at the Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig during the next Test Your English Tour!

Test Your English!

The tours are conducted once a month in English at 4.30, are free of charge, and are on a topic that is specific to the students’ individual IB Art themes. The tours scheduled during the first semester are as follows:• 17.09.09 at 4.30 p.m. “Two Together” by

Meeting spot in the Lobby of the Museum.

Study Room

SPLAT (Super Powered Late Art Team) will kick off in September and will be held on a Friday, every 6-8 weeks in the secondary art room. It will be an intense six hour session where IB/IGCSE Art Students will have the opportunity to continue their course projects or experiment with new ideas. The event will run as an open studio where Mr. Lewis will not instruct but work alongside the students producing his own artwork. The work produced will be displayed at the end of the evening on the fourth floor for all to see on Monday morning! Steve Lewis

Following some rearrangement of rooms on the top floor of the building over the summer break we now have a space for the students who have study periods (which you may hear them referring to as ‘free’ periods) to work in during the day. As well as work space there are some computers there attached to the students network and there is a wireless connection for their laptops. This space can also be used by secondary students at the end of the day for them to work in before they go home or while they are waiting for an activity to begin or a parent to collect them.

Leipzig International Choir – new singers welcome!

LIC was started by a small group of parents in 2007. Originally only planning to sing some Christmas carols the singers had so much fun that the choir just grew and grew.

Under the very professional and highly motivating guidance of our wonderful conductor Howard Arman the program developed into something slightly more challenging and soon first public performances were planned. Last year we sang such divers programs as chorals from Händels Messiah (with a much

enjoyed concert at the Reformierte Kirche) and numbers from West Side Story for the guests of the LIS summerfest. This year it will be Mozart. We are again planning a concert in early December with Mozarts Mass in D-Major. Rehearsals start on October 6th and take place every Tuesday at 19 p.m. in the auditorium on the third floor.

We want you!

We welcome everybody: parents, teachers, secondary students (grade 10 and up), friends, family and especially tenors! So if you are a singer, or can’t wait to be one – just drop in at one of the rehearsals or contact Mona Gabriel at [email protected]

LIS MOVIE NIGHT Did you ever dream of having your own private cinema? Choosing the film and watching it with friends and having a drink together? And best of all: watching it in the original version (which is almost impossible to do in Leipzig)? This wish is now coming true. We arranged a regular LIS Movie Night at Schaubühne Lindenfels.

LIS proudly presents: movies in the original version.

Every first Monday of the month they will show a movie of our choice – just for us: parents, school staff and older students are invited. Afterwards there will be a big table (or more) reserved for us, so we can chat and have a drink together.

It’s a great chance to watch your favourite movies again in the cinema, or the ones you wanted to see but missed. And it’s also a great chance to get together with other people from the LIS community, make friends and meet those who are already friends.

Movies this year will be as follows:

Monday, 5th October, 20 p.m.Rocky Horror Picture Show

Monday, 2nd November, 20 p.m.Billy Wilder’s: One, Two, Three

Monday, 7th December, 20 p.m.Love Actually

Place: Schaubühne Lindenfels, Karl-Heine-Str. 50 (not far from the school), Tickets: Adults 6 Euro, Students (with school pass) 5 EuroThe focus will be on English movies but since we are an international school there will also be some movies in other languages, all of them in the original version. We have chosen a vast variety of films so there will be something for everyone.Starting with the cult-musical “Rocky Horror Picture Show” from 1975 starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Meat Loaf etc.Looking forward to seeing you all there,
