HEAD OF CURRICULUM NEWS Educational apps are not new and are in fact more popular than ever, with so many to choose from on either tablets or smartphones. Of course, they do need to be age appropriate but that isn’t difficult to check. It just requires a little bit of research, such as reading reviews left by other parents. Educational apps are designed for children of all ages and abilities. Here are a few advantages of educational apps, and why the use of them should be encouraged. Teaching away from the classroom not only helps students to progress faster, but also improve their ability to use technology. They can also be used during school holidays. They combine education with entertainment. Here are a few educational apps that will support you child in literacy, numeracy and digital technology.

LIBRARY AWARD Congratulations to Cathleen H of 5F and Skeyler of 5W who is this week’s Library Award winner.

LIBRARY NEWS

As children get older and move from picture books to chapter books, we often stop reading to them and allow them to read independently. While this growing independence is important, one way you can continue to support your child’s reading journey, is by continuing to read to them or with them, particularly when they are beginning a new book or series. Some of the benefits of this are:

Your child can establish difficult names of characters and settings and become used to new grammar.

Your child ‘gets into the story’ quickly, increasing the likelihood of them finishing the book.

You are able to talk about the book with your child as they continue to read it by themselves.

You will have a greater understanding of the types of books your child likes to read so you can both be on the lookout for great books.

Some of the best books I’ve ever read have been for children – you never know – you might not be able to put the book down either.

If you are after recommendations for your child, please don’t hesitate to come and see us in the library. Congratulations to last week’s winners of the draw for bringing along a library bag: Ruby L – 1/2W, Luke J – 3W, Sarah C – 4M, Ashlee H – 6C and Skyla B – 6D.

If you have any unwanted plastic shopping bags at home, we would love them for the library. Thanks for all the bags we have already received. They come in very handy.

Mardi & Sue, Love to Read!
