7th Grade

ELA

2nd Quarter is going to bring a lot of excitement to our 7th grade ELA students. Students will be learning all about informa-

tional reading and writing. Students will be reading stories about people like Mother Jones: Fierce Fighter for Workers’

Rights. The story Barrio Boy by Ernesto Galarza relates Galarza’s first experience in an American school after moving from

Mexico to California as a six-year-old boy. Another example of our informational reading is Jawaharlal Nehru, who worked

beside Gandhi and later became the prime minister of India. The Other Side of the Sky tells the story of how Ahmedi and

her mother escaped from war-torn Afghanistan through the kindness of Ghulam Ali, a fellow refugee. Travels with Charley,

by John Steinbeck, is the author’s account of his journey across the country with his pet poodle, Charley. Students will also

be diving to the deepest depths of the ocean a century after the great ship sank to the ocean floor, the Titanic still captivates

the imagination.

Students will also be learning how to write their first Essay of the school year on Informational Writing. They will also be

working on these papers by doing research in school and at home. Parents can help their students by discussing safe re-

search techniques (technology) and credible resources with their children.

7th Grade teachers also want to thank all of the parents that attended Parent/Teacher conferences. If you were unable to

attend and would still like to speak with your students teacher, their contact information is located below:

Students will be learning about the 13 colonies, Native Americans, Pilgrims and the Revolu-

tionary War before Christmas. Please make sure you are checking agenda books every

night. They should be writing homework assignments and essential questions in their

agenda books every day.

Math

November Newsletter: We will continue working on proportional relationships with percent through November. This is a

short unit, which will be followed by expressions and equations. This unit will begin with integer operations, and it is ex-

tremely important that your child memorize the rules. The websites below can help with these skills:

www.khanacademy.org

www.shodor.org/interactivate/activities/ArithmeticFour

www.quizlet.com

Just as a reminder, please use Teacherease regularly to check on your student’s progress and communicate with teachers. If

you have difficulty with Teacherease, please contact Mr. Ferber, 444-3421.

Science

We are deep into our Chemistry unit now. Each student has a Chemistry book which should be brought to class every day.

We have been examining different types of matter. Students know what matter, mass, and volume are. They can analyze

data about properties to determine if substances are the same or different. Soon, we will be exploring chemical reactions.

You can extend learning outside of the classroom by having your student conduct simple experiments with chemical reac-

tions (vinegar and baking soda, making slime, etc.) at home. Ask your student to explain the properties of the substances

before and after they interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred!

AVID

The 8th grade AVID students took a college visit to Purdue University

where they were able to learn about college life and what Purdue

offers. On the trip they took a tour of Purdue’s brand new Engineer-

ing Library, their Recreation Center, and eat lunch in one of the

dorm where students were able to try many different types of

foods. On top of that one of the highlights of the trip was a tour that

was given of Mackey Arena that included a chance to get on the floor

of the arena and sit in the premium seats. This is a trip that the

students enjoyed and will add Purdue to the list of colleges that they

will want to think about when they get to high school and start nar-

rowing down college choices.

ELA

In October, we focused on informational text. In November, we are starting The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton. Through The

Outsiders, we are working on figurative language skills. Students have been given their AR goals for 2nd quarter. Please

make sure that your student is reading their AR books at home and taking AR quizzes at school to reach their goal. Stu-

dents are proven to be more successful in school the more they read. If your student is struggling with what to read, please

talk to their ELA teacher. We are more than happy to help. We are in this together!

Social Studies

During the month of November, 8th Grade Social Studies classes will be learning about the American Civil War. Students

will be investigating the causes of the war, as well as looking at the lasting effects of the bloodiest war in American history!

Math

Pre-Algebra classes just finished Unit 1 on Real Numbers. As we move into Unit 2 students will be expected to recall

what they learned on solving one-step equations in 7th grade and apply that to begin solving two-step and multi-step equa-

tions. As with any math content, this new information is extremely difficult if students do now know the basics. Please

encourage your student to come in for extra help if they begin to struggle as soon as possible. Students will receive some

class time to complete homework with a teacher’s help; however, students will regularly have leftover homework to com-

plete at home.

Algebra classes have completed Unit 1 on Functions and will be moving on to Unit 2 Linear Functions. Students will be

expected to graph/transform linear functions and graph linear inequalities in Unit 2. Make sure your student is completing

homework and studying for any tests or quizzes at least 24 hours before the assessment so that the material can truly be

mastered. If a student does not earn an A or B on any objective check, he or she can come in for extra help and have anoth-

er opportunity to take the assessment and demonstrate mastery. ALL algebra students are required to earn a 70% or high-

er on the unit assessments in order to be considered for advanced placement in geometry as freshmen.

Science

We are wrapping up Earth Science unit looking at the causes of earthquakes and volcanoes. We will be having the unit test

before Thanksgiving and then the students will create posters that show the different plate interactions and then will look

at the other interactions to see what is going on in the world today. After Thanksgiving the students will start looking at

genetics and what makes animals look the way that they look.

If you student needs any help these websites will help you help your student:

-You tube channel: Crash Course Biology, Crash Course Kids, BrainPop

-Also they can google search any of the topics that we are working on and there are multiple resources out there to help

them.

Northwestern University Assistant Coach Tasha Pointer was in attendance at NRMS on Wednesday, October 18th to

watch the 8th grade Lady Ridgerunners basketball team play Rantoul. Northridge won 41 –13. Coach Pointer was very

intrigued by the young potential on the teal and excited to see the teamwork displayed by all! Keep up the good work la-

dies.

As Thanksgiving and Christmas will soon be upon us, please remember: Teachers will be teaching every day until break. If

you are planning a trip for the holidays, please consider making your arrangements around

the school schedule. Every year, absences increase before and after the winter holidays as

families squeeze in a few extra vacation days. We’re looking to break that cycle. We know

that missing a few days here and there, even when they’re excused absences, is time lost in

the classroom and can potentially put a child behind. Simply put, too many absences at any

age can affect a student’s chances for academic success and eventually for graduation. Our

teachers will be teaching and our students will be learning, right up until vacation starts as

well as the first day back from break.

Computer Club will take place every Tuesday and Thursday and last until March. Students will learn about different com-

puter programs, complete tasks, and present their projects to the class. Activities students have completed in the past in-

clude, but not limited to:

Coding

Webpages

Blogging

PowerPoint Presentations

Creating Graphs in Excel

Designing Avatars

Graphic Design - Brochures, Business Cards, Thank You Cards

Students wanting to participate will need to pick up a permission slip from Ms. Flesch in room 909B.

Birth-3 Program

Here is a little message from the Birth-3 program housed at Mark Denman Elementary. As we are winding down a little

from the start of the school year we wanted to let everyone know a little about us. We provide support, developmental

information and access to resources for our D118 families who are pregnant or have children under 3 years of age through

home visiting services. We also provide networking for our families through our Play groups and Group Connection activ-

ities in the community (Ag days, Festival of Trees, etc.). If you have a family you feel is struggling and they have younger

little ones we would love to see if they would like to have support through our home visiting network.

We welcome any questions you may have and if you have a family that you feel may be in need of supportive services

through home visiting we would love to speak with them. We can be contacted at the numbers below if you have any

questions:

Veteran’s Concert

The 7th Grade Choirs are hard at work on the Veteran’s Concert scheduled for November 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cafetorium.

We have invited patients from the Illiana VA Healthcare System and will honor all veterans in attendance. Admission is

free

Secret Garden

Make plans now to attend the North Ridge Theatre Company production of The Secret Garden – Spring Edition which will

be presented on November 30 and December 1 in the NR Cafetorium. Show time is 7:00 p.m.

The North Ridge Cheer/Pompette team attended the Breast Cancer Walk with the

Making Strides Team in Champaign-Urbana, IL on October 14, 2017 along with 558

other walkers. The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

walks raise awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer. Each event is a

noncompetitive 3 to 5 mile walk that brings people together to make a difference for

everyone who has been touched by breast cancer. The events raise money to fund in-

novative research, provide free information and support, and to help people reduce

their breast cancer risk or find it early when it's most treatable. It was an honor to be

apart of such inspiring people and to make a difference within our community.

Cheerleading and Pompettes

Beginning Monday, October 23rd, students who were present for picture day will be given a student ID card. Students are

expected to wear their ID’s at all times in order to better prepare them for the high school. Teachers will have incentives in

place to reward those students wearing them properly each day. Additionally, students wearing their ID will be allowed to

get their lunch first because the ID cards are able to be scanned and make the lunch line run smoothly. Students who forget

or refuse to wear their ID will be allowed to go through the line following those with IDs. Any students who were not

enrolled or present for picture day will not be penalized – they will be given a blank ID with their lunch bar code. After

picture retakes on November 7th, all students will have a picture ID. Please encourage your child to wear his or her ID,

daily. They may choose to wear their own lanyard as long as they are breakaway (snaps or clips that break apart when

pulled on).

Builder’s Club

In the month of October, the North Ridge Builders Club started our school recycling program, volunteered at Kiwanis Pan-

cake Day, and started our Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF collection. Please keep collecting General Mills Box Tops, and send

them to school with your child in a baggie or an envelope marked with their name and grade. We are planning a Box Top

collection contest and will announce the details soon.

In November we will honor our local veterans by making Veterans Day cards that will be delivered to our VA Medical Cen-

ter. We will also begin our Wreaths Across America collection. Our goal is to raise $2550 that will be used to purchase 170

wreaths for the Danville National Cemetery. This is 50 wreaths over our last year’s total. Please consider sponsoring a

wreath. All wreath sponsors who donate by November 11th, Veterans Day, will have their name put in for a drawing to re-

ceive a Danville Gardens gift card or an Anker Florist gift card. The wreath donation information is included in this newslet-

ter.

Thank you for supporting the North Ridge Builders Club and our projects.

Please contact us at North Ridge or fill out the attached sponsor form if

you are interested in sponsoring a wreath or two.....or more. All wreath

sponsors who donate by November 11th, Veterans Day, will have their
