Dear Parents,
On Sunday, we celebrate Mother’s Day and the contribution that mothers have made to our society. Let us give thanks for the love and dedication of all those who have ‘mothered’ us throughout our lives and, at the same time, remember those whose mothers have passed from this world.
OPEN DAY
Our annual Open Day, held for the first time during the week, was an outstanding success. The continued involvement of our students as tour guides, caterers and in conducting practical demonstrations ensured that our College was a living entity where the skills obtained were demonstrated for our guests. I thank our staff for their energy and enthusiasm in setting up demonstrations and exhibitions of student work. It was an outstanding way of showcasing what we do at St Brigid’s to the wider community.
Many thanks also to the large number of prospective families who attended our Parent Information session at the conclusion of our Open Day. Parents were informed of the many wonderful initiatives and programs currently being provided to our Year 7 students and our new Sports Academy for Year 9 and 10 students next year. I thank Antonia Jeffery (Assistant Principal - Wellbeing), Rachel McGennisken (Assistant Principal – Teaching and Learning), former student Ben Brooksby, Year 7 students: Larissa Barber, Claire Burton, Harriet Overman and Ryan Brown and Year 12 Student Captains: Mia Panozzo and Gerard Natividad for their presentations to parents.
Enrolments are now being accepted for our Year 7 classes next year. Enrolments close Friday, 1st June.
STEAM CENTRE We are about to embark on our new building venture that will see an architect designed, purpose build STEAM Centre become a highlight feature of our College. STEAM education involves integrated learning across Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics and we are expanding our teaching and learning program to ensure we continue to meet the needs of our current and future students. Building an even better St Brigid’s College is an exciting project and the new STEAM building project heralds a bright future for our College.
CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK
Next Friday we celebrate the commencement of Catholic Education Week and the strong Brigidine traditions that have laid the foundation for the richness of Catholic Education that we experience here in Horsham. The theme this year is "Come and See" (1 John 1 38-39). I am often asked about what makes a Catholic School distinctive.
I am often asked about what makes a Catholic School distinctive. I believe we, at St Brigid’s College:
promote a particular view of the person, the community, Australia and the world, centred on the person and teachings of Jesus Christ.
challenge students to find, through God, meaning and value in their lives.
form a part of our church community.
critique our culture, and challenge community values, as an integral part of our Gospel mission.
aim to be a welcoming and reflective community.
espouse values which unite Australia by promoting a citizenship infused by a commitment to social justice.
develop a sense of historical perspective by reflecting on the development of societies and cultures over time, a story of human frailty but of continual efforts to live the Gospel message.
Next Friday we will celebrate Catholic Education Week with Mass at Ss. Michael and John's Church at 11.30am.
NAPLAN TESTING
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for Years 7 & 9 will be held next week from Tuesday, 15th May until Thursday 17th May 2018. At St Brigid’s all students are encouraged to participate in the suite of NAPLAN tests. Please note that should your child be absent for a test without an official withdrawal, he or she will participate in the catch-up tests held on the Friday morning. Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual or complex disabilities. If your child is eligible for exemption you should make contact with me to discuss your child’s participation. Exemptions cannot be granted without parental knowledge and consent.

TABLE TENNIS | Greater Western Level Senior Boys Table Tennis Players: Kodi Souter, Dante Szel, Alastair English and Nathan Kirby.
Table Tennis @ Warrnambool Table Tennis Stadium VS Warrnambool College and Mercy RC.
It was a tough day in Warrnambool for the Senior Boys coming up against some skillful and more experienced players. Despite the result, the boys had a great time and represented the school well while also gaining some more competition experience under their belt.
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS | Congratulations to Kayla Kelm for winning a silver medal for Vault at the State Championships for Gymnastics at the weekend! Fantastic work Kayla!
YOUNG VINNIES It was an early morning start last Thursday as the Young Vinnies’ leadership team and members, accompanied by Cathy Van Dyk and Les Butler, ventured off to the Vinnies College Conference Day at Abbotsford Convent in Melbourne. When we arrived, we were welcomed and talked to by younger members of the Vinnies community, the president of Vinnies Victoria and the president of the Fitzroy Soup Van. Then we talked about what it meant to ‘Be Vincentian?’ with all the other schools.
Morning tea was served and then we separated into groups and completed three workshops each. In these workshops they talked about all the great things Vinnies does for the community, how we can get involved and gave our group lots of future fundraising ideas. We all gathered after that to reflect on what we had learnt, what we will do and ‘how we will continue this conversation’. We were served sandwiches, fruit and water from the soup van then we took off for our long trip home, with a little detour to Maccas in Ararat. The bus trip home was full of discussion about the future of Young Vinnies and was finished off by some interesting dance moves courtesy of Les Butler.

HELPING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
This week some of our students once again volunteered to help set up the tables for the Wimmera Hospice Mother’s Day Luncheon.
At St Brigid’s College we highly value community involvement through helping others. Pictured below are Year 10 students Kyra Clarke, Maddison O’Neill-Crozier and Madeleine Arnel pictured with Lea and Rae from Wimmera Hospice and also in action setting up the chairs.
TOP SCREENS & TOP DESIGN | VCE Media and Visual Communication and Design students visited the Top Screens and Top Design exhibitions at ACMI and Melbourne Museum. Students were inspired by the exceptional work on display and will now begin the exciting process of designing, planning and creating their own projects.
MEALS ON WHEELS | St Brigid's College will be working with our community to deliver Meals on Wheels in June. We are looking for volunteers to be involved in this great initiative! Can you help?
