FROM THE PRINCIPALDear Parents, Caregivers, Staff and StudentsThis has been another year in which Marryatville High School has stood out from other schools, in terms of both academic and extra-curricular success.

Teaching staff have made an outstanding commitment to provide opportunities and create learning environments for students to pursue excellence.

At our core we are characterised by our values which determine the culture in which our school community exists. This provides an environment where students can flourish and achieve their goals.

The academic performance across all year levels has been commendable and can be attributed to the high standards set by both staff and students.

A strength of our school community is the fact our young people receive a clear and united message of what is expected of them. Our expectations are communicated in a consistent way where they are understood and adhered to.

At Marryatville High School, education is not just learning facts and figures; it is about understanding that the journey is more important than the destination. It is about continuously improving the entire person, not just their knowledge, but also their attitudes and behaviours so they become productive members of our community.

In December our Year 12 students will receive their results. I would like to take this opportunity to farewell the class of 2017. I sincerely thank all students and their families for their contributions over the years and wish them all the best for the future. It is my hope that all of our graduates leave Marryatville High School with positive memories, lasting friendships and the capabilities and motivation to successfully pursue their dreams.

It is fitting that this year the Old Scholar Association has been resurrected, recognising that even when students leave the school, for the rest of their lives we welcome them to remain connected to the Marryatville High School Community. I am confident we will continue to hear from our 2017 graduates and look forward to sharing their many and varied journeys.

I would like to thank the 2017 Student Representative Council for their leadership, commitment to our school, collaboration with the student body and community spirit. In particular, I have appreciated the work of our School Captains and Vice Captains, Liliya Butonova, Sebastian Isa, Ellen Pettigrew and Derrick Duan.

Thank you to the Governing Council for the governance of our school. I especially would like to thank Lorraine Karunaratne for her outstanding leadership and support as Chairperson of the Governing Council. Her commitment to the school and understanding of the essence of what makes Marryatville High School so strong is inspirational.

Finally, I would like to thank our entire school community for their investment in Marryatville High School and commitment to ensuring our focus is on student wellbeing, the learning journey and the pursuit of excellence.

il GOVERNING COUNCIL NEWSThe Annual General Meeting was held on 21 November 2017. The main item on the agenda was the election of the Governing Council for 2018.A number of members were due for re-election. Not all nominated for re-election and therefore there were a number of vacancies.

These were quickly filled with new nominations for one and two year terms.

Continuing member Robyn Daly welcomes Sue Cayzer, Peter Schulz, David Kumari, Margie Bowden and Simon Zbierski to the 2018 team.

Serving members Gino La Barbera, James Blindel, Sushil Kaur and Santosh Nathan, whose tenure had expired, were all returned.

Lorraine Karunaratne has not re-nominated for the new Council after four years service. Governing Council wishes to thank for her participation and stewardship and wish her all the best as she focuses on being a parent of a Year 12 student in 2018.

The upcoming year promises to be an exciting one with the rebirth of the Old Scholars group and the incorporation of Parents and Friends into Council. Most importantly the students are very excited about the range of initiatives they have embarked on in the furtherance of sustainability at the school.

We look forward to working with our new Principal, Mr John Tiver, who has shown a keen interest in supporting the issues that matter for students, staff and parent/caregivers alike.

We look forward to meeting as many parents and caregivers at the various events planned in 2018.

In closing, Governing Council would like to wish all students, staff and their families all the best for a very Merry Christmas and fantastic New Year.

Mr Gino La Barbera Governing Council Member

STAGE 2 SPACE MISSION EXCURSIONIn September, the Adelaide Convention Centre hosted the 68th Aeronautical Congress, as part of a DECD initiative highlighting STEM. Mr Manuel Pontikinas and Ms Laura Hudson accompanied two groups of Year 8 students that had been selected to present their findings on Stage 2 Designs - ‘Growing Plants in Space’.The students were able to set up their own stand where they could display their presentation. They each had 30 minutes for their group to present their findings to the other scientists and engineers that were wandering around. The essence of the presentation was to express the importance of growing moss in space not only for the experiment but also in the long run. There was also a slide show running in the background so that other scientists could see the experiment visually.

The students also walked around the Convention Centre. There were many other stands like Marryatville High School’s. Students talked to the owners of the expos and learnt about their experiments or products. One of the favourites at the expo was the Nova stand, which had a Virtual Reality (VR) headset that the students were allowed to try out.

s YEAR 8 SCIENCE ZOOSNOOZE 2017On Monday 13 November 2017, Ms Karageorge’s Science class went on a ZooSnooze excursion to the Adelaide Zoo. We slept overnight in tents on the roof of the Education Building. This excursion was an opportunity for the students to learn and observe animals, but also to understand the role the Zoo takes to look after them. Our class of 28 students were accompanied by Ms Karageorge, Mr Leibhardt and Mr Shortland.Students attended their first three lessons, Home Group and recess before taking public transport to the Botanic Gardens for a lunch stop, then walking to the Adelaide Zoo. Upon our arrival at the Zoo, we were welcomed by the Education Officer who showed us around. We unpacked our luggage which was delivered by Mr Pontikinas, changed into comfortable clothes and set up our sleeping areas. Everyone worked together to decide which tasks were allocated to the multiple groups, e.g. making dinner, making breakfast, and the cleaning up. Claire, Hannah and I were given the task of making dessert. Afterwards, we were given a booklet to start working on and time to walk around and explore the Zoo in our small tent groups.

The booklet was a collection of different types of questions on an animal of the student’s choice. Everyone met back at the education building around 3.30pm for an afternoon snack and refreshments. After having a quick break everyone moved off again and continued with the observations and learning about their chosen animal.

At 5.00pm we gathered back at the Education Building to meet the Zoo night staff. Stephanie, our night guide, asked us to play ‘getting to know each other’ games and talked to us about the Zoo and what it does to look after the animals. Dinner was at 6:00pm. We had a barbeque which included chicken patties, vegetable patties, sausages, pasta and salad. The dinner was enjoyed by many.

After dinner everyone joined Stephanie for an adaptations task. In groups, we created a new animal, drew a diagram of it and presented the animal to the rest of the class. My group was given the rainforest as the animal’s habitat.

Once everyone had completed the animal adaptations task, we had ice cream for dessert. My group was the dessert team. We scooped ice cream into cones for people to add the topping of their choice. This was a pretty fun job, and once everyone had been given an ice cream, we were free to customize our own to our exact preferences. This resulted in over-sized ice cream scoops compared to the size of the cones.

We were all pretty worn out once we had finished dessert. All the excitement and exercise from walking around had exhausted everyone. The next activity on the list was the Zoo night walk and orienteering. We were handed a task sheet which included clues for the whereabouts of animals to be discovered. We walked around the Zoo as one big group, looking for the locations and names of the animals from the list of clues. It was very dark so we brought torches with us. Lots of the animals were sleeping and we stuck red cellophane onto the ends of our torches so we didn’t disturb or interrupt the animals. This was a fun experience - being able to see the animals when they were sleeping and the opportunity to walk around at night with no other people around. Once we had finished orienteering we headed back to the Education Building for a cold milo, biscuits and a movie. The day had been 36oC so the cold milo was very refreshing. We watched Moana, which was a funny and enjoyable movie. After the movie people headed off to bed.

MORIALTA CONSERVATION PARK FILMMAKING EXCURSIONOn 9 and 10 November, Ms Dixon and Ms Romanos’ Year 10 Media Arts classes went on a full day filmmaking excursion to Morialta Conservation Park to produce a short film on the Australian Landscape, which involved three sessions of filming and sound production. Throughout the day students were provided with refreshments, snacks and pizza for lunch. The trip was a great experience for us to get a better understanding of film techniques by experimenting in the Australian Landscape. It also involved pre-production planning, followed by post-production processes, including editing in Adobe Premiere Pro.

sNo one got the best sleep on ZooSnooze due to the noises from the animals, however no one really minded too much. Around 6.00am many people had woken and decided to get up because of the unbearably loud noises coming from the monkeys.

In the morning, everyone cleaned their tents and packed their bags, ready for the end of the day. Breakfast was toast and cereal, simple but filling. The day was filled with more wandering around and studying the animals to complete our booklets.

The class had a bought lunch from one of the cafes in the Adelaide Zoo. Ms Karageorge was kind enough to buy ice blocks for everyone. Thanks Ms Karageorge! After lunch we all watched a Macaw show which was very interesting.

Everyone went back to the Education Building for the last time to say goodbye to the Zoo staff.

ZooSnooze was a very enjoyable, positive and educational experience. I highly recommend this experience to future Year 8 students of Marryatville High School.

CO-CURRICULAR REPORTLast weekend saw the completion of another successful year of Co-Curricular activities at Marryatville High School.Around 60 teams across eight sports and debating offered the opportunity for students to enjoy a full and rich experience. We estimate close to 700 students were involved in some capacity displaying great school pride and approaching each week in a positive and respectful manner.

We enjoyed some premiership success in Soccer, Touch Football, Basketball and Netball but the key motivation was participation and fun.

I’d like to thank the Year 12s who have supported the program over the past five years and I hope to see many of you back in the near future as either coaches or officials. Over 90% of our coaches this year were past students who conducted themselves impeccably and professionally, and contributed to the culture of the school community.

I’d especially like to thank the tireless work of Mr Matt Caire whose legwork, organisation and incredible diligence and patience ensures the program runs as smoothly as possible.

Any outstanding levy contributions would be greatly appreciated as we are in the process of finalising budgets and planning for next year’s bumper program.

YEAR 12 VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION 2017Celebrating the completion of the year for Stage 2 Visual Arts we hold an exhibition of the students’ final Practical work of both Art and Design. This year’s event was held on Friday 17 November in The Studio. The successful evening was well attended with parents, families and friends of the three classes, old scholars and teachers. We all enjoyed listening to the five piece jazz combo made up of enthusiastic Year 8 students – they kept the crowd entertained whilst everyone viewed the diversity of installations and representations of Art and Design practices. Delicious catering provided by Amanda from the school canteen was much appreciated.

Derrick Duan and Liam Moroney spoke of their respective journeys through studying the Visual Arts and importantly, the meaningful impact it has had on their creative growth, dedicated problem-solving and decision making for future pathways. William Bampton was capably in control of the formal proceedings as the MC.

Fifteen students were presented with Subject Achievement Awards and special acknowledgement was awarded to five outstanding students in support of their imminent pursuits of continuing creative ventures.

The following week, junior classes were able to take the opportunity to engage with the displays. They acknowledged how representations communicate artistic intentions in art and design. This learning informs their future art and design making.

29 November 2017 Dear Parents / Caregivers

Materials and Services Charges - 2018

The Department for Education and Child Development (DECD) allows the Governing

Council to set a single Materials and Services Charge (the Prescribed Sum) and

pursue payment of this charge provided the majority of the School Community polled

is in favour. The Marryatville High School Governing Council conducted a poll of the School

Community, excluding International students during Term 4 regarding setting and

collecting the ‘prescribed sum’ of $860.00 plus any applicable subject charges for the

2018 Materials and Services Charge.

Information regarding the poll was sent by post to 1035 families. A majority of parents

supported the Governing Council’s recommendation to increase the legally

recoverable amount to $860.00 plus applicable Subject Charges.

In accordance with procedures, the Principal has ensured the poll was conducted

within the requirements. On 28 November 2017 the Principal approved the prescribed

sum of $860 plus any applicable subject charges for a specific student to be the legally

recoverable amount for 2018.

The Marryatville High School Governing Council and Principal thank the school

community for their support.
