2010StudentReportsThestudentreportsfor2010havebeenmodifiedwiththeaimofstreamliningthereportingprocesswhilstmaximisingtheinformationconveyedabouttheprogressofeachindividualstudent.AreportwillbeissuedattheendofeachtermforallYears8-11studentsandYear12studentswillreceiveareportattheendofthefirstthreeterms.

Years8-11studentreportswillhavewrittencommentsinTermsoneandthreeandYear12studentreportswillhavewrittencommentseachterm.Thewrittencommentswillbeformattedindotpointsratherthancontinuousproseandfourspecificpointsabouteachstudent’sprogresswillbehighlighted.Thesereportswillalsocontainagradeandattitudeindicator.InTerms2and4theYears8-11reportswillcontainbriefinformationabouteachstudent’sprogresshighlightingtheirgrade,abilitytomeetdeadlines,studyhabits,productivityandcooperation.

OneformalparentteacherintervieweveningwillbeheldinWeek10ofTerm1.Ifthereareanyconcernsabouttheprogressofastudent,thenimmediatecontactbetweentheindividualteacherandparentisencouragedandcanbearranged.

PreparationfornewSACEStage2in2011.WiththeintroductionofthenewSACEourcurrentYear11studentswillberequiredtocompletetheresearchprojectandtheequivalentoffourStage2subjectsin2011.ThecurrentSACErequiresallofourYear12studentstocompletefivefullyearsubjectsthisyeariftheywishtoattainaTERforuniversityentrance.AconsequenceofthisreductioninfullyearsubjectsmaybeareductioninthenumberofStage2subjectsthatareoffered.

TobeginplanningforStage2in2011allofourcurrentYear11studentswillcompleteasurveylaterthistermthatindicatestheirpossiblesubjectselectionsforStage2in2011.Furtherinformationanddetailswillbegivenlaterinthetermbutitisimportanttostressthatnoindividualstudent’sresultswillbeidentifiedwithinthesurveyandstudentswillselecttheirStage2subjectslaterintheyearthroughthenormalcoursecounsellingprocess.

TheLanguagesTeamremainsmostlyunchanged,withallbutonestaffmemberreturning.MsMagdaleneLamcompletedhertenureattheendof2009andisworkingatAdelaideHighSchoolin2010.MsSiewNgisteachingChineseagainthisyeartakingalloftheclasses.SheishereuntiltheendofTerm3whentheteachersheisreplacing,MsWenXiaMa,resumesworkafterparentingleave.

MrWoodleyisteachingmostoftheJapaneseclasses,butwiththeadditionofhisnewroleasYear9Manager,hehasrelinquishedoneclasstoMsLeSeelleur.ItwillbeaverybusyyearforMrWoodleyasheplansforbothinboundandoutboundJapanesetrips.Wecongratulatehimonhisnewroleintheschool.

FrenchistaughtthisyearbyMsLeSeelleur,MrPérezandMrThorburn.TherehavebeenanumberofcoursechangeswiththeseniorschoolprogramsbeingrevisedforthenewSACE.TheFrenchexchangeprogramalsocontinuesthisyearwiththearrivalof24studentsfromOrléansinJuly.AgroupisexpectingtotraveltoFranceattheendoftheyear.

FRENCHEXCHANGE2009-10ThistourisalwaysahighlightoftheschoolexperienceoflearningFrenchforthosewhoareluckyenoughtobeabletoparticipate.The14studentswhowentlastyearwereextremelyfortunateastheywereabletostaylongerinParisasthetourleftthreedaysearlierthannormal.Excitedattheprospectofspending9nightsandtendaysinthemost-visitedcityintheworld,imaginetheirdelightwhensnowforcedthemtospendanothernight(andday)inthefaircity!!!

UsuallywhenthegrouparrivesinParisthepilotannouncesreallycoldtemperatures–zeroorbelow–andthethrillofhavinglefthotAdelaideforfreezingPariskicksin.Thisyearwearrivedtoaquitewarm8degreesandtheweatherstayedreasonablypleasantforthefirst6days,butthenitstartedtochange.Overnight10centimetresofsnowstartedtofallinplaceswheresnowwasnormallyafigmentoftheimagination,andtheFrenchstartedtopanic.Caraccidents,traveldisruptions,

strikesbecamethenormandourplanswereaffectedbythehysteria.

ThestudentswerelookingforwardtospendingadaytothenorthofParisinandaroundAmiensandVillers-Bretonneuxtouringsomeworldwarsitesandcemeteries.ThefirstmajorsnowfallcausedchaosonroadsandrailwaylinesanduponourarrivalinAmiens,itwas

decidedtoshortenouritineraryandvisitonlyVillers-Bretonneux,theFranco-AustralianMuseum,theAustralianWarMemorialandtheAdelaidecemetery.Wewereworriedthatwemightbesnowedin160kilometresnorthofPariswithnochangeofclothesandkidsalreadysufferingfrom

traipsingthroughsnowinsneakers!!!

OurworstfearswererealisedwhenthetraintakingusbacktoParisstoppedinthemiddleofnowherewithsnow-coveredfieldsallaroundusandsnowcontinuingtofall.Whentheannouncementcameovertheloud-speakerthatatrainhadbrokendownaheadofusatastationplatformand

thatwewouldhavetowaitwherewewereuntilitwasfixed,thekidsopenedupanotherbagoflolliesandMsStoupposandImadecontingencyplansforthenextcoupleofdays.

WedecidedthenandthereitwouldbeworthourwhiletostayanextranightinParisifthesnowwasfallingassolidlyinthesouthaswell.WecontactedourhostsinOrléansandtheyadvisedustostayinParisassnowwasstillfallingthere,andworse,thetrainstationstaffhaddecidedtogoonstrike!Evenifwehadleftaspredictedtherewasnoguaranteethatwewouldhavearrivedthesameday!!!

Despiteallthis,thekidshadaball.Theytookeverythingintheirstridecalmasanythingandmadeusreallyproud.Theydidn’trantandravewhenwestayedanextranightinParistheysimplyaskedwhatthingstheycoulddotoextendtheirknowledgeofthecityanditssights.HavingalreadyseentheEiffelTower,theArchofTriumph,theChamps-Elysées,Galeries-Lafayette,Notre-DameCathedral,theLouvre,theSacré-CoeurBasilica,theMoulinRouge,Napoleon’sTombattheMuseumoftheArmy,theScienceParkatLaVillette,theStadedeFrance,theMuséed’Orsay,thePalaceofVersailles,Montmartre,nottomentionshops,shopsandmoreshops,theysettledforsomefreetimeontheChamps-ElyséesandwatchingAvatarintheirfirstFrenchcinemavisit.

WefinallymadeittoOrléansalbeitadaylateandthekidswentofftotheirhostfamilies.Itwasevencolderbythetimewearrivedbuteveryonewasexcitedtocatchupwiththeirhostfamiliesandbeginthesecondpartoftheadventure–ChristmasandNewYearinaFrenchhousehold.

Twoweekslaterwecaughtupwiththekidsbackatschoolandheardtheirstories–ofthethingstheyhaddoneandseen,theplacestheyhadvisited,thepresentstheygotforChristmasandtheirconcernsthatthetripwasalmostoverandtheyweren’treadytogohomeyet!!EvenaweekinaFrenchschoolcouldn’tdampentheirenthusiasmforthetripandtheexperienceofalifetime.

Schooltendstoabigpartofthelastweekofthetripbecauseittakesupsomuchtime–theschooldaystartsat8amandforsomestudentsitdoesn’tfinishuntil6pmsomedays.Thisisanewrhythmforourkidswhoareusedtofinishingat3.20mostdays.Wewereluckyenoughtohavesometimeawayfromtheschoolaswellasweweretreatedtoavisitofachocolatefactory(AlexOlivieratNeuville)andaboulangeriewherethebakerdemonstratedhowbreadwasmadeandthenofferedussometastings.

Theweatherturnednastyagaintowardstheendofourvisit withlotsofsnowandice

affectingtravelandtransport.I’mpleasedweleftFrancewhenwedidbecausemoresnowstormswereexpectedthedayafterweleft.Thethirty-eightdayswewereawaywerefilledwithamazingexperiencesforallofus,somewewillneverforget.

SojaMinamiSisterSchoolVisitsMrWoodleyisabouttobeginworkontheseanddocumentationwillbecominghomewithinterestedstudents.

BothtripsoccurinTerm3withtheJapanesevisitingatthebeginningofthetermandourgroupleavinginSeptember.Thesetripshavebeenheldoverto2010becauseofthecancellationsandpostponementscausedbySwineFlulastyear.

Ifyouareinterestedingettingmoreinformation,please

askyourchildinthefirstinstanceandthencontacttheschool.Itisalwaysdifficulttofindenoughhostfamiliesforanyoftheschool’sinboundtourssoifyouwouldliketobecomeinvolvedinhostingastudentpleasecontacttheschoolformoreinformation.

ChineseIthasalwaysbeenourintentiontosendagroupofstudentsstudyingChinesetoChinaaspartoftheschool’sInternationalTouringprogram.We’rehopefulthatagroupwillleaveinApril2011fortwoweeks.Ifyourchildisinterestedthens/heshouldtalktoMsNgorMrThorburntoregistertheirinterest.

ExcursionsDuringthecourseoftheyeareachlanguageorganisesexcursionstoextendthelearningexperiencesstudentscanenjoyasapartoftheirstudies.Theseincludevisitstorestaurants,cinemas,andculturalcentres.

TheFrenchteachersarekeentotakestudentstotheFrenchFilmFestivalinAprilandwouldliketoinviteparentstoparticipatewherepossible.Moreinformationwillbecominghomeshortly.

HomeworkParentsoftenaskhowtheycanhelptheirchildrenwithhomeworkwhentheyhavenoknowledgeofthelanguagebeinglearned.Remainingpositiveandencouragingyourchildtomakeanhonestattemptattheworkisthebestadvicewecanprovide.HomeworkintheMiddleSchoolisoftenworkgiventoconsolidateorpractisetheworkdoneinclassinpreparationforfutureassessmenttasks.Ifstudentsarelearningvocabularyforatest,theycanbehelpedinthesamewaysthatyoumighthavehelpedwhentheywereinprimaryschool(ifthey’llletyou).Iftheyarepractisinganoralpresentation,beasupportiveaudienceandwatchthemperform.

Showaninterestintheirculturalandlinguisticlearning.Whenyouaskthemwhattheylearnttodayinclass,theymaysay‘notmuch’buttheyhavebeenexposedtoawholelotmore.

IamwritingaboutmytimeinJapantostresswhatanimpactithadonmeandmyfuture.Itopened

somanydoorsandcreatednewoneswhenIspentthreemonthsinTokyo,Japanonastudent

exchange.IhavemademanynewfriendsandhavetrulydiscoveredJapan“behindthescenes”.

Myhostfamilyhelpedoverandabovemyexpectationsbytakingmeeverywhereandteachingme

asmuchasmybraincouldhold.Mymaturityandlifeskillshavejumpedafterbeinganindividual

forthreemonthsinacountrysodifferentfromAustralia.

ForsomeonewhoisthinkingaboutcontinuingJapaneseatschool,thisisyourtripandwillhelp

immenselywhenitcomestoexamtime.BeforeIwenttoJapan,Iwasundertheimpressionthat

Japanwasanaliencountryandcouldnotbenavigatedbyanyforeignerintheworldbutafter

mystintoverthere,Ihavequitetheoppositeviews.However,travellingaroundTokyoledby

anoutstandinghostfamilyisdefinitelythewaytogo.Youwilldiscovernewthingsthatcan’tbe

describedinEnglishandeatsomeofthebestfoodinyourlife.ThatiswhyIwanttopromote

thistriptootheryounghopefuls.IputmyhandupinclassonedayandIdidn’tknowwhatIwas

gettingintobutitsurepaidoffinsuchapositiveway.Ican’twriteinEnglishjusthowmuchthistrip

‘Unforgettable’istheonewordIwouldpicktodescribemyyear-longexchangetoSoja

MinamiSeniorHighschoolinOkayama,Japan.Althoughthefinalweeksbeforemyreturn

werepuncturedwithgood-byes,someofmybestmemoriesliethere:seeingthefirstsnowof

winter,flakesofitdancingtowardstheground;runninghomethroughtherainwithmybest

friends,ourhairslashingthroughtheairandatourfaces;andallofmy4hostfamiliesatthe

trainstationwavinggoodbyetome.TheyknowthatIwon’tforgetthem.

It’sastrangefeelingtobebackinAustralia.Iamreallyhappytobeback,toseemy

friendsandfamilyandtogettoknowmywayaroundAdelaideagain.AtfirstIhadtrouble

speaking‘normal’English.Ioftensurprisedmyselfbyaccidentallysayingsomethingin

Japanese,orknowingtheJapanesewordforsomething,butnottheEnglishequivalent.Now

thatalmost2monthshaspassedsinceIcameback,IamwishingthatIwasoverthere

again.Imissmyfriendsthemost;Imissbeingchallengedbythelanguageeveryday,and

always,alwayslearningnewthings.WhatIvaluemostaboutthisexperiencearethefriendsImadeduringmytimeaway.I

knowitwasveryhardforthemtostepoutoftheircomfortzoneandmakeanefforttotalkto

me,andIreallyappreciatethefactthattheydid.Iamalsoveryappreciativeofmy4host

families,whotaughtmeaboutJapaneseculture,showedmethesightsandmadeaHUGE

efforttomakemefeelathome.NowthatI’mbackatschool,Ican’twaittobecomeahostfamilymyself,sothatIcanbea

partofgivingsomeonethebestexperienceoftheirlife!Ihopethatfutureexchangestudents

haveasgoodatimeasIdid.

TradeSchoolsfortheFuture(TSftF)enablesecondarystudentsfromYear10onwardstoundertakeanApprenticeshipwhilecontinuingwithsecondaryeducation.StudentsareabletoachievetheirSouthAustralianCertificateofEducation(SACE)whilelearningskillsandworkingtowardsanindustryaccreditedqualification.

StudentsengageinaTrainingContractasanAustralianSchoolBasedApprentice(ASBA)whichsetsouttheirconditionsofemploymentandtrainingwhileinvolvedintheTSftFprogram.

SchoolBasedApprenticesspendtheirweekdaysinvolvedinacombinationofschool,paidworkandskillstraining.ASchoolBasedApprenticeshipgivesstudentsaheadstarttowardstheirchosencareer.

TheYear9SiemensScienceExperience

InthesummerholidaysIwenttoTheSiemensScienceExperience.ItwasattheAdelaideUniversity.Theprogramwasfor3daysandthe3rddaywasattheRoseworthyCampus.

OnthefirstdaythereweresomefunscienceexperimentsrunbytheCSIRO.Somewerefuntowatchandtolearnthesciencebehindthem,whileotherswerejustforfunandtotrickvolunteers.

Thenwesplitintogroupsanddidsomeactivitieslikeidentifyingthesmellandsmashingcells.Attheendofthedaythereweresometalksaboutcoursesattheuniversityandcareeroptionsfocusedonaparticulartopic.

Theseconddaywassimilartothefirstbutthespeechthistimewasveryinteresting,itisshowingsomeforensicuseofphotos.Wethenlookedatsomerealskeletonsandanoutlineofourskeletononashirt.Laterinthedayweprogrammedsomerobotstogoaroundacourse.Thiswasmyfavouriteactivity.OnthelastdaywewentonabusridetoRoseworthycampus.Therewelookedatsometypesofsoil,skulls,thereproductivesystemandloadsofotherthingsinsidethebody.

Itwasafunexperiencewithplentyofhandsonexperienceswhilelearningalotofnewthingsaboutscienceandpossiblefuturecareeroptions.

RoyalAustralianChemicalInstituteMedallionPresentationFourMarryatvilleHighSchoolstudentsfromlastyearwhoachievedameritinYear12ChemistryreceivedamedallionfromtheRoyalAustralianChemicalInstitute(RACI)lastFridayevening.

TheeveningwasattendedbyrepresentativesfromtheRACI,students,parentsandteachers.Only57studentssittingfortheSACEcertificateachievedmeritslastyearfromover3,500students.

AllfourwillattendAdelaideUniversitythisyearwithAndrewandZoestudyingMedicine,James,acourseinAstrophysicsandSpaceScienceandEwanadoubledegreeinMechanicalEngineeringandScience.

NationalYouthScienceForumDuringthesummerholidaysitwasmyabsolutepleasuretobeontheNationalYouthScienceForuminCanberrawithonehundredandfiftyotherYearTwelvestudentsfromalloverAustraliaandoverseas.

TheNationalYouthScienceForumisanintensivetwelvedayresidentialprogramthatgivesthestudentsthechancetotestdrivedifferentscientificcareers.StudentsareputintogroupsaccordingtotheirscientificinterestrangingfromChemistrytoBio-MedicinetoEngineeringandareabletoparticipateinseveralexclusivelaboratoryvisitswithhandsonactivitiesincludingmakingfluorescentflubberandicecreamwithliquidnitrogen!Butit’snotjustaboutscience.Inadditiontoalltheamazinglabvisitsanddebatesaboutcontroversialtopicssuchasclimatechangeandnanotechnologytherewasplentyoftimeforsocialactivitiessuchasabushdance,disco,twoformaleventsandseveralpicnics.
