Staffing 2017 We have just ratified our appointments for 2017. We are delighted to announce that Amy Battrick and Liz Moore have both won permanent positions at the school. Joining our teaching team for 2017 is Angela Friedlander who is a very experienced teacher with strengths in science and maths. We are very much looking forward to having Angela in the school - her passion for digital learning will also be appreciated. Katie Williams is moving to Auckland from Palmerston North. She is a junior based teacher with interests in sport and dance (she has just successfully trained a jump jam team through to take out first place in the national comp). Again, we are very much looking forward to having Katie in the school next year. Also joining us is Bridie Zarifeh who was a student teacher at KTS earlier on this year. Bridie has a Bachelor of Science with a major in zoology and a minor in marine biology. Jessica Field is our last new teacher. She has a strong interest in speech and drama, has been a keen rower and is very excited to be coming to KTS in 2017. Why four new teachers? We are very excited to be opening a third intermediate class in 2017 so one additional teacher is required for that space. We have decided to have Sarah Brown move out of full time teaching for terms 1 and 2 to boost student learning in the junior area of the school and to save us trying to recruit a new entrant teacher mid year. Sarah is also going to be doing some work around transition programmes into primary school. Kath Horsnell is moving out of her full time teaching role also to act as associate principal for 2017. Carolyn Bowden will be teaching science again next year. We will be saying goodbye to Brent West who will be taking on full time dad while his wife takes on full time masters study. Louis Heap is very excited to be stepping into my shoes for the two terms I am away on fellowship. He is well prepared for the role and is very much looking forward to this next phase in his leadership development. With Kath also part of the leadership team the school is in good hands for sure. Class Placements Once teachers have completed end of year reports, we will be sorting classes for 2017. This is a complex process and one we take very seriously. There are a number of factors we take into account when allocating students to classes - gender balance, ethnicity, learning needs, friendships as well as strengths and interests of the teachers students will be going to. Students will find out their new classes and visit the teachers on Monday 12th December. Our new teachers will be joining us for these new class visits. Due to roll numbers we will be having some composite classes again in 2017. Our intermediate classes will continue to be a mix of Year 7 and 8 students. We will be having a Year 1 and 2 class as well as a Year 2 and 3 class. This is completely down to the number of students. In the past we have aimed to keep the class numbers lower in Year 1 which has an impact on numbers going forward but have now committed to growing those Year 1 numbers and have therefore taken more on the ballot. There is no impact on learning with children being in a composite class as each student is taught based on their

identified needs - not a whole class expectancy. Curriculum is not repeated but responsive to the interests of the children. Access to the school student management system In order for parents to be able to sign in and track attendance, access reports and see financial summaries, we are opening up the parent portal. You will receive an email with our access code and a password which you will be able to change. I am sorry but I cannot do a test of the process and provide you with more information until after I hit the ‘go’ button. I will send out additional information about what you need to do once this access has gone live. World Quiz We are very excited about the prize draws that will take place as part of the Room 10 hosted assembly on Friday. Thank you so much to all the families who have supported the school, and the learning of your children. As you will be aware, we had a target of $15 000 and if every child received $40 in sponsorship we would make it. We are very delighted to announce that as of yesterday afternoon we have banked a total of $17 556 - an AMAZING total. Thank you so much from the PTA - what an unbelievable effort from all of you. Kids Marathon What a gorgeous day it was on Sunday to watch the final 2.2 km of the kids marathon. Such a great effort to have these students run the 42.195km over the last 10 weeks so ably supported by Ngaire Malpass. Thank you so much Ngaire for your efforts to ensure we had a team run for the 7th year in a row. The photos show how proud of their efforts these people were!! Read on for more details. Growing Leaders We have just had news that one of our ex students, Luci Trethewey, is head girl for Diocesan for Girls in 2017. Congratulations Luci - apparently she claimed as she left KTS at the end of year 6 that whilst she was now a Dio Girl she was always going to be a Kohia Kid. This is on the back of two of our ex head students being deputy prefects at their high schools this year. Jade Beckmann at EGGS and Edward Moody at AGS. We look forward to seeing Jade and Edward when they come in to share their last five years with our intermediate students at careers day later in the term. Our busy term continues so please ensure you keep an eye on the dates in the calendar both here and on the website - Alison Congratulations Year 7&8 Talent Quest Last Friday we were treated to a lunchtime of wonderful entertainment when some of our talented intermediates took part in the Year 7&8 talent quest. Following are the results from a very strong competition: 1st - The Band (Alice, Ben O, Emily, Joseph, Michael, Sam, Stella), 2nd= Alice and Sonia, 3rd - Stella B. Congratulations to all the students who performed. This week we are looking forward to the Year 1&2 talent quest on Thursday and the Year 5&6 talent quest on Friday.

Spotlight on Sport ASB Auckland Kids Marathon Sunday 30th October was Race Day, our Kohia Kids Marathon Team had been training 10 weeks, 4km each

week, to achieve a total of 40kms before the big day. Race Day dawned bright, clear and cool, perfect conditions for a fast race. Our Kohia Kids showed their commitment to the last, turning up on time to start their races at 11am, with their race taking them

amongst Auckland's Wynyard Quarter area and along the final stretch on Fanshawe Street to the official Finish Line with all the other racers of marathons, half marathons, 12kms and 5kms. On Sunday they raced the last 2.195km to complete their own individual marathon. Congratulations to all our racers and thanks to parents Justine, Rebecca, Victoria and Vigna for their help with weekly training. Ngaire Malpass

We would like to say thank you to Ngaire Malpass for organising this event, running the trainings every

Wednesday and collecting the race packs. We really appreciate your time and the encouragement you give them all. Jayne Settle

Senior Athletics We had the most fabulous day at our Senior Athletics on Wednesday 19th October. The sun was shining and we had many excited students arrive ready to do their very best. I was so impressed with the behaviour, respect and kindness shown in all the age groups. Everyone tried their very best at every event, it was awesome to see some very close races and field events. Thanks to everyone who came to help us run the different events at athletics day. We could not run this without your help. We have a fabulously supportive community - we are very lucky. It was lovely to see many of you pop along to watch some events and cheer on the children. A truly fabulous day. Some children have qualified for zones and more information will be coming out about this. Jayne Athletics Events still to be held: 800M for 9 and 10 Year olds On Wed 2nd Nov at 12:30 I will take the 9 and 10 year olds to Melville park to run the 800M. This is for those who would have run at our school athletics day. It is an optional event. Please can they bring PE gear and running shoes to school on this day. 400M Finals On Wednesday 2nd November I will be running the finals for the 400M. The children know who they are and if they could bring PE gear and running shoes on this day that would be great. Softball Zones On Thursday 27th October, a group of year 5 and 6 students represented KTS at the Eden Albert Zone Softball tournament. The weather was sunny and warm as we headed into four games of softball. Our first game against Balmoral ended with a hard fought draw. Our next game was against Dominion Road which was a loss, but a close game throughout. We then came up against Wesley and managed a good win. Our last competition game was versing Gladstone who were too good on the day, and took a solid win. We missed out on a place in the semi-finals, so instead enjoyed a game with Hebron Christian School for the rest of the afternoon. It was a fantastic day with each of the team members showing skill, determination and great sportsmanship. Although the results didn't go our way, we all enjoyed representing KTS. Well done to the team: Raghav, Max, Drew, Isabelle, Mary-Ann from year 6, and Brooklyn, Ashley, Benjamin, Bailey, Nikko, Trey and Joshua from year 5. Special thanks to Nicole Smith and Karen Tuxford for driving the team to the event. Thanks to Rachel and Sheryl for coaching the team during lunchtimes and to Sheryl for managing the team on the day. Sheryl McEwen Basketball The KTS Tornadoes play basketball each Wednesday night and they had their second win last night.

They won 25 - 2. They have been working hard on getting better each week and they have come a long way. Congratulations Tornadoes!! Yummy Sticker Promotion Thank you to everyone who collected yummy stickers. Below is a photo of all the new gear we have got for playground use. We have 30 large playground balls, 10 smaller playground balls, some juggling sets, skipping ropes, and some smaller handballs for the juniors to use. Thanks again for your support - lets see if we can collect double the amount for next year. Remember you can continue on collecting right now and each completed sheet gets you house points. Belonging to Kohia Terrace School PTA Ice Cream Sales The PTA will hold an ice cream sale on Friday after school at 3pm from the school hall. A flyer will be emailed today with full details. They would like some volunteers to help with managing the queues/selling of ice creams on Friday afternoon. You would need to be at school 2:50pm and meet by the hall. If you are able to help please email Alexandra Corbett at [email protected]. Second-hand Uniforms Spring is here and I'm sure you're all planning to spring clean the wardrobes too. Remember donations of clean uniforms in good condition are always welcome and very much appreciated. They can be handed in at the office any time. Contact Ngaire on 021 0277 9355 if you are looking for specific items to purchase as we probably won't have a sale this term. Science

Kids for Kids Choir Festival 2016 - Monday 7 November Kohia Terrace School Choir are a part of this fantastic singing festival and we have been practising for this night during the year. The 2016 Kids for Kids concert: ‘Slice of Heaven’ is jam-packed with 100% kiwi music and the show promises a huge fun night out for the entire family. Led by musician Nathan King (Ruby’s dad), the real stars of this inspirational mass choir performance are
