Mission
DC is a bilingual school provid-
ing a challenging, balanced,
international education. Our
mission is to empower students
to be active, responsible citizens
on the local and global levels
throughout their lives
Misión
El Davy College es un colegio bilin-
güe que provee una educación inter-
nacional equilibrada y exigente.
Nuestra misión es facultar a los
alumnos para que lleguen a ser ciu-
dadanos activos y responsables a
nivel local y global durante su vida.
Learning to learn, Honestly
Academic integrity is learned, which means it needs to be
taught. That may seem an obvious remark, but, too often, a
student’s community of family and school avoid addressing the
issues because of fears that using the word ―cheating‖ will
either create a negative atmosphere or the finger will be
pointed at them because they raised the matter. Davy College,
like every other academic organization in the world, sees some
student work that has not been done honestly. It is actively
encouraging schools to be more aware of the problem, to
discuss it openly and to take measure to help students. The
following extracts provide a starting point.
We need to convince our students that integrity matters. We
usually tell them to think about our community, their future.
For teachers, the problem with this is that it requires a
community effort; it’s not something that can be dealt with just
in the classroom.
At Davy College we have been working on the Learner Profile
attributes so far; one of these is to be PRINCIPLED. This
means that a student has a clear sense of integrity, honesty
fairness, justice and a sound grasp of moral reasoning. It also
means that we do not speculate of become involved in gossip,
but rather go to the source of the problem rather than complain
to others.
In their book Curbing Epidemic Cheating Through
Systemic Change, Alfred Alschuler and Gregory Blimling cite
an incident that is becoming all too familiar to teachers. ―This
is a good work, wrote a professor on a student’s paper. ―It
was excellent when Saint Thomas Aquinas wrote it, just as it is
today. St. Thomas gets and ―20‖, you get and ―0‖.‖
Students should be aware of the consequences of behaviors and
take responsibility for their actions. DC currently works with
software named ―Turnitim.com‖ that provides an excellent
service not only with respect to detection, but also, and perhaps
more importantly, for prevention of plagiarism.
We need to work together, school and parents so that students
understand that they must learn how to learn, honestly that
learning is an action that requires effort. We must create an
environment in which students want to learn through instilling
in each student a craving for knowledge, truth and
understanding.

What are the benefits of children learning to draw in
center time?
Young children are active learners who touch, feel, experiment
and create. Children are interested in the world in which they
live. Centers are a symbolic representation of their world.
When you teach a child to draw, you are teaching them to interact
with their world. Children often draw things they see around
them. Drawing helps them to understand and interpret everyday
situations. It also helps them represent things that happen to them.
But the main question is, what do we want our children to be
able to do?
In our classrooms when we work in centers (small groups of chil-
dren) they interact more frequently and share their own experi-
ences also they communicate their ideas and their feelings in dif-
ferent meaningful ways.
As every parent knows, getting young children to talk about
emotional experiences is often difficult. Centers routinely use
drawing and other forms of art work to help children express
what they can’t with words. The description below helps us
better understand how drawing can help children overcome their
limited verbal skills.
The researchers maintain that drawing increases the amount of
information that young children express about their own past
experiences, also the authors suggest that 3-6 year old children
can get back their emotional experiences and provide detailed
descriptions of those events through drawings. They assert that
drawing may be particularly valuable.
What are the benefits of children learning to draw in center
time?
When being encouraged to draw, they begin drawing what they
see. They not only begin to learn hand-eye coordination, but to
understand the central idea carefully. These children will learn
to begin how to make comparisons between different aspects like
shapes, proportions, tones, textures, and sizes. This begins to
shape their constructive view, allowing them to make assess-
ments.
Finally, the children will learn that, as with anything in this life,
drawing ability will improve with prac-
tice. We keep a portfolio of their work
and-after a few months they will be able
to look back and see how much their
work has improved. This is a vital skill
to instill in children, that with hard work,
success will come.

sos.

PRIMARY WINTER CONCERT: ―Once Again and
Again‖
We have had four versions of this great music event where
primary students, exhibit with great effort their achievements
during the first school semester.
This year ―Winter Concert‖ was held on July 1st at the school
gym. This artistic musical activity was performed by students
from Kinder through grade five .
Some of the skills displayed by students were:
1. Skill to play the instrument,
2. Basic technical knowledge of
singing (breathing and vocaliza-
tion),
3. Self-control before the public,
4. Posture, and
5. Proud, enthusiasm and satisfac-
tion for the well done job.
We try to present a different show
each year including instrumental
themes as well as modern songs
with a meaningful content as the
song ―Again and again‖, the theme
song for the last concert sang by a
choir of 200 voices from Grades 3,
4 and 5 students.
The challenge for the next year is greater but I am confident
that our students will respond with great effort to their new
goals. Thank you to all of them for their effort and talent.

Muchas gracias

Art Exhibit Secondary
During the first semester we have had several events in the
Art Department which reinforces the idea that art is very im-
portant for the integral formation of the students. We had
exhibitions of fine arts, parent workshops and music concerts
including theater. We have implemented and placed more
emphasis in artistic and music activities within our arts pro-
gram. Our objective is to form a deeper cultural awareness.
Arts is becoming a need in our school.
Arts help little and young students to become more creative,
to explore new situations and environments. This practice
helps them to develop different skills and overall to strengthen
their self-esteem. This will be useful for them as they face a
changing world which demand more creative people who are
available to assume new challenges every time.
Arts demands situations to be solved using creativity through
shapes, colors, gestures, sounds...To be creative demands be-
ing able to see the world from different points of view and
have the courage to change it. One of the creative person’s
characteristics is to be a leader.
It is not strange to listen to our students talking about painters,
architects, sculptors or musicians. It is not weird to see par-
ents interested in their children’s performance in the arts sub-
jects or asking to participate in our workshops. Arts is chang-
ing in some way our community’s priorities. Our final goal is
to form creative people.
Martín Moratillo—Head of Art Department
creativas.

Liliana Bandini – Librarian
After almost five years working for
Davy College, our Librarian, Lil-
iana Bandini, is moving to India to
work for Le Mont High School in
Lavasa. Liliana worked hard to
implement our new library inaugu-
rated in November 2006. The Li-
brary has become the academic
core of our school and is a place
where students come to do re-
search, study and share useful time
reading and watching videos re-
lated to their academic program.
The library is a member of the
American Library Association, the International
Federation of Library Association and Association
of School in South America which allows Davy to
be updated about the last titles used in other inter-
national schools. We are working with the Library
Congress Resources (Classweb), Follet, E-books,
Ebsco online databases which are the last resources
for school libraries.
Good luck, Liliana and thank you for your hard
work and dedication.

Working with our children during holidays:
Children can often be delightful. They also can
sometimes be deceitful or unkind, bullies or victims.
Sometimes the difference can be in the lesson they
learn, both at home and at school. Here are some ways
to help your children grow up to be respectful and kind,
and to have the self-respect they need to make the right
choices, both now and in the future.
Trade places. TV shows and movies can be helpful in
teaching children how to be more sensitive to other’s
feelings. When you’re watching a program together
and one character behaves unkindly to another, pause
the movie or ask at the commercial: ―Did you notice
how mean that character was? How do you think that
made the other person feel? What would you do in that
situation?‖ Talk it through together and stress the im-
portance of treating people with respect.
Face the mirror. Too many children are very skilled at
being angels in front of teachers or parents and the op-
posite when adults are not around. One of the most
powerful lesson parents can teach their children is this:
The real you is the way you behave when no one is
watching. Children need to learn to behave well and
treat others well because that’s the kind of person they
want to be, and because that’s the only way to respect
the person they see in the mirror.

Trabajando con nuestros niños durante las
vacaciones:
