NAPLaN 2018

Australian wide NAPLaN testing will occur Week 3 of Term 2, May 15th to 18th. This testing plays an important role in the College’s data collection and all students are expected to participate. It also provides a snapshot of how individual students are progressing in really important areas of their development. It is a clear indicator of how a student has progressed from Year 7 to Year 9 in the areas of reading, writing, spelling, grammar, critical literacy and numeracy skills.

Although NAPLaN is not the complete picture of a student’s development it does allow educators the opportunity to adjust programs in identified areas of need for the particular cohort.

Reports and End of Term Arrangements

Written reports will be distributed at the end of Term 1, Friday 13th April in a short Care Group at 2.10pm. Students will be dismissed at 2.15pm for the April school holidays. Adult students can collect their reports from the Front Office. Reports not distributed on this

day can be collected by parents or adult students from the Front Office during the holidays.

Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews will be held on Wednesday 9th May. Parents will receive information in the post about how to book interviews on-line with subject teachers. We encourage parents to make appointments as this face-to-face meeting provides an invaluable opportunity to find out more about your child’s learning progress.

Year 8 and 9 ReportWe are now over halfway through the term and our Year 8s have well and truly settled into High School and our Year 9 students back into the routine. It has been a busy start with middle school students signing up for a range of sports, volunteering to be buddies for our visiting Japanese students, our girls experiencing an amazing presentation from Dr Christyl Johnson NASA Deputy Director and large group of students nominating to compete for their house at our Sports Day. Our pastoral care program is also well underway and every Wednesday students have been participating in a range activities with aim of giving them the skills and capabilities they need to be successful both in and outside of the classroom. The Year 8 program began with some establishment of day to day routines, team building and goal setting games and will continue on to cover Bullying and Harassment, Cyber Bullying and Safety and Year 8 Camp preparation. The Year 9 program began with goal setting through group games and a personal strengths analysis. This lead to each student setting a personal and learning SMARTER goal. The Year 9s will continue to cover personal identity, gender stereotypes, body image and healthy mindset in the coming weeks. Both year levels will finish the term with a celebration assembly of the most outstanding academic results, sporting and co-curricular achievements.

Kristy Power Assistant Principal

Year 8 BBQ At the very start of the term in week 3 we hosted our annual year 8 BBQ where staff and families got an opportunity to meet again and further strengthen our partnership. The parents, caregivers and students who attended got to hear about the exciting new developments happening at Hamilton Secondary College and some of the events that their students will have the opportunity to be involved in throughout the year. They were able to talk with teachers about their students learning and share important bits of information with each other on a more informal basis. At the end of the night all the food was gone and we all had a great time socialising together over a snag, or in some students case 3 or 4 snags. A big thank-you to all the families that attended and in particular with wonderful leaders and Year 8 teachers who set up the venue, cooked the food, blew up the balloons and provided a welcoming and warm atmosphere.

International NewsOn Sunday 11th March we welcomed students from Ashima Senior High School to Adelaide. They will be staying with homestay families and attending our College for the 2 weeks. During that time they are excited to join in on Sports Day. They will be doing English lessons, Drama and Art, Bush Dancing, Rugby and practising their English with buddies during recess and lunch time. Ashima students will be visiting the Gorge Wildlife Park and the Adelaide Hills as well as exploring the city. Please make our visitors feel very welcome.

We have been invited to bring a group of 10 students to Ashima High School in Osaka, Japan from September 18th -28th. The cost will be approx $2,500 and activities will include 3 days at school as well as excursions to Nara, Kyoto, Osaka and Universal Studios. If you are interested in this trip you must let us know before March 16th. There are a few places left.

Nunga Tag On Wednesday 7th March a small, but seriously talented group our Indigenous students from Years 10 and 11 participated in the annual Southern Region Nunga Tag Carnival at Christies Beach High School. This Carnival allows Indigenous students and their families, from all over our region, an opportunity to come together to celebrate culture, connect with a community organisation and service providers and collaborate on and off the field playing tag Rugby.

Hamilton students Flyame Rollins, Phoniex Spicer and Sonny Goldsmith teamed up with students from Reynella East Secondary College to dominate the opposition teams winning 3 out 5 games and drawing 2, all whilst having to get used to the bigger ball and the lack of handball, when playing this “new” game. Year 11 student Ricky O’Loughlin played with his SASSTA team mates and SA Rugby League staff and organisers complimented him on his excellent team work and tried to entice him to code swap and play League.

It was a proud moment for staff when students were presented with their shirts and trophy, as all the students involved were the perfect representatives of our school values. The Carnival was a great initiative and we thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Assistant Principal ATSIMAPS Film School here at Hamilton, had great success at the Fleurieu Film Festival in South Australia in February. This competition was open to all South Australians. Some of our First Year Diploma in Screen and Media students from 2017, won in best Script (Sam Dawson) and Best Editing (Callan Albrecht and Lotte Sweeney) categories, for the film short “Dirty Mirror” - a production made for coursework assessment, that clearly reached a very high standard indeed. Our congratulations to these talented filmmakers, on their award winning piece competing against professionals. We look forward to more precocious material from them, in their Advanced studies here in the College in 2018.

Dr LEIGH SUTTON, Certificate Manager.

The Certificate II in Sport and Recreation students have been using a range of opportunities to update their sport and recreation industry knowledge. This includes a question and answer session with local personal trainer, Gary Gillies, who has trained many athletes in a range of different sports for over 30 years. The students also got to try an outdoor training session which included an individual time based exercise challenge, partner wrestling moves and group challenge with a weighted water ball, massive rope and flipping a tractor tyre! Many thanks,

Christine KusznirCertificate 1 Food Processing Viticulture 2018 Harvest2018 Vintage has seen our Viticulture students busy cleaning and preparing the equipment for harvesting and processing grapes. This year our students have already harvested Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Willunga and were able to use a crusher destemmer to process the grapes. Students were able to analyse the sugar and pH levels of the grapes and add the chemicals required to meet winery specifications. Year 8 & 9 students have also helped pick the College’s grapes and they had the opportunity to use some of the equipment. The Viticulture students have shown great team work and resilience when it gets tough and are able to return to school to process the grapes before finishing for the day. Students have had the opportunity to help in the preparation of the wine yeast to be added to the grape juice. The yeast helps convert grape juice into wine. The Viticulture students learn how to use different scientific equipment to measure, record the changes from the grape juice into wine.Llallemend, a world leader in Oenology have, provided the College with the yeasts and additives to help us produce wine of world standard.

VETVocational Education and Training (VET) UpdateVET courses are underway and students in some VET courses are starting to prepare for their first Structured Work Placements. Students undertook an Induction Morning at the College in the first week of February. This included going through a range of student expectations (eg uniform, use of mobile phones and leaving College grounds).Course trainers introduced the five hours of WHS training that is compulsory prior to any student undertaking Structured Work Placements or Work Experience (only relevant to certain courses). Students need to provide evidence of this, along with their Student Declaration Form, Workplace Learning Agreement From and Risk Assessment completed by their VET Trainer/Teacher. All of this documentation needs to be in to the Principal at least two weeks prior to the commencement of the Work Placement.Coming up this year will be the one day short course in RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) and one day Barista workshop.Ms Desanka ArezinaVET Coordinator

SACE/ Year 12

The SACE Board has launched their new branding and website- Learning at the pace of change! This new key phrase of SACE represents the value of the SACE in the 21st century. As the world changes and education needs changes, the SACE evolves to meet those needs. The new SACE logo was created around the symbol of the plus mark (+), representing advantage and the positive change brought about by achieving the SACE qualification. Its continuous flow represents the continued renewal of the SACE program, and the green

represents the SACE- a modern and valuable qualification for life. Please head to the SACE Board Website, Twitter account and/or Facebook page for updates to information about the direction of the SACE and to access valuable information throughout the year for both SACE students and families. All SACE Stage 2 subjects and Stage 1 Semester 1 class subject enrolments have now officially closed. Please speak to the SACE Coordinator, Tamara Seaman, or the Wellbeing Coordinators, Mr Matt Taylor and Ms Lisa Fowler, should you have any queries regarding this.Should you have any questions about SACE Special Provisions in 2018, please contact directly the SACE Coordinator, Tamara Seaman on (08)8275 8300 or email [email protected]

Year 12 Year 12 students are well and truly into their research for their Research Project. Research proposals have been submitted, and students are working on a variety of interesting questions. Please talk within your families about the research progress so far, as having your young person sharing their information and ideas is a great way for them to really reflect on their research journey so far, and think about what they still need to discover. Students are certainly working hard to complete this subject, which is due for the final submission of results in Weeks 6-8 next term. Students are reminded that this is a Semester 1 subject only. The Folio is to be completed by Week 11 this term. Please refer to DayMap for your child’s Assessment Plans with due dates. It is recommended that students spend between 3-4 hours per week for homework on their Research Project. If you have any questions please contact your child’s teacher directly. We will be running the Year 12 Holiday workshops again in the Term 1 holidays- stay tuned for a workshop timetable which will be available by Week 10. I encourage all Year 12 students to attend these workshops offered by our Year 12 teachers and access the extra support provided to maximize your Year 12 results. The date has been set, and the Year 12 Formal Team is formed. I welcome those students who are volunteering their lunchtimes and free time to be a part of the team this year. Our first fundraiser was the BBQ stall at the school Sports Day.

Adult Campus

Term 1 has been very busy with a number of adult classes being relocated to new areas around the school as a result of the building renovation works occurring in the Milburn building. The Adult Student Lounge is now located in the Dance studio (next to the Mitchell building) and my office is also situated in this building, so please drop in and say hello if you are using the lounge. The Adult Lounge has a few facilities specifically for Adult students- dedicated rest rooms, air-conditioned lounge area with a food vending machine, tables and chairs for study use and lounge furniture for relaxing between lessons. Adult students wishing to use computers can access them in the library. This year most adult students are enrolled in classes with mainstream students in Stage 1 and 2 undertaking general SACE subjects. The only exception to this are the three evening Art classes which are predominantly adult only classes. VET has also been very popular this year with the majority of Adult students enrolling in VET certificate courses, combined with a dedicated SACE Stage 2 Research Project class on Fridays. This is a very effective way to complete SACE as a Certificate III courses plus the Research Project usually provides enough credits to complete SACE Stage 2. It also provides a completed SACE, an industry qualification and entry into TAFESA, so this has been a popular choice for many adults wanting to complete SACE in 12-18 months.

Attendance - all students need to attend school regularly and keep the school informed if they are unable to attend due to illness or family reasons. Attendance in SACE courses is crucial to success, and many students who miss large amounts of the school term , even if it is explained, will struggle to be successful in their studies. When this occurs you need to make an appointment with a Well-Being Coordinator or myself to discuss your future aspirations. Students who do not respond to contact from the College regarding their attendance and fail to attend for more than four weeks will have their enrolment concluded.

New Website - please see our new website which was launched in Week 3 of this term. This is a great way to keep informed of upcoming College events and also access DayMap and the College email system from home. As the College moves to greater use of technology this is also an effective way to communicate directly with your teachers through DayMap and keep up to date with school notices and messages. Access these services by clicking on the ‘Intranet’ tab at the top of the school web page. Please see me if you are not sure how to do this and I can show you.
