SCOREBOARD

Take a Moment ...

―It only takes a split second to smile and forget, yet to someone that needed it, it can last a lifetime.‖ Steve Maraboli

… from the Head Teacher John Boyce… from the Head Teacher John Boyce

We always begin with prayer. For instance, yesterday‘s assembly started with a prayer

thanking God for our gifts, asking for success in our exams next week and safe holidays. Last night‘s hui started with a prayer praising God.

Of course God knows these things already – knows what we need and knows that we are grateful for the gifts we were born with. God doesn‘t grow in pride or glory because we praise him!

So why do we bother? God already knows we want world peace and common cause and more

vocations. Our asking is always redundant as far as letting God know what we think – so why do we bother?

I don‘t think anyone has put it more simply and more accurately than Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic, and religious author Søren Kierkegaard. He wrote the function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.

I‘m sure God is pleased when we pray – but not because that causes God to change his mind, or to suddenly realise that we have a need he hadn‘t thought of. At Garin we always begin with prayer because prayer does change us.

God always makes sure we get what we need – but God does not need our prayers to remind him. What our prayer does, is remind US. And that pleases him.

Our prayer reminds us that we were created by God, that God loves us, that all will be well. Our prayer reminds us to have faith in God, to have hope, to live in love.

Everything around us tells us a contrary message: that will live in an uncaring world, nobody loves us, nobody cares, and the only way to gain love is to be prettier or wealthier or have more. We hear that it‘s all going to fall to pieces unless we make ourselves secure – and nobody is going to help us, and it‘s a wasted effort anyway because we are all going to die!

My daily prayer for my children is that this day they take one step (however small) towards becoming the person each was created to be. And prayer (no matter how small or trite) is one way to take that tiny step.

Prayer does change the nature of the one who prays. Regular prayer obviously does that better than a single prayer in an emergency.

And there are other things that also change the nature of the person: taking time to appreciate moments of beauty, taking moments of reflec-tion – time to think – and then to sit for a moment in silence. Moments of love, moments of joy – these also change us, making us deeper, more sen-sitive, more aware as people.

We are not perfect – and that is the most wonderful thing about us – we have so much room to learn, room to grow, room to become more the per-son God created us to be.

Prayer cannot change God. Prayer, no matter how little or seemingly unimportant, prayer does

change the pray-er.

Runners-up again! The Garin Gladiators lost their final game in the B grade section of

the Fulton Hogan basketball league. They played the Cobras, mainly from Nelson College for Girls, and lost 30-20. Two of our players, Millie Hage and Sam Bjerga, were recognised at the prize giving for great play in their first year of basketball.

Results Netball Finals Senior A 32, Waimea 10A 31.

Senior Gold 26 , Murchison Sen-iors 20.

Basketball Finals Gladiators 20, Cobras 30. Football Girls—Good Season The Garin Girls football team

had a loss to a polished Nayland First XI last Sunday. Nayland had been to tournament recent-ly, and their improved match fitness and passing saw them beat Garin 3 – 1. Garin was first to score when Caitlin Corish hit a great shot from the edge of the box, but Nayland equalised be-fore half time. In the 2nd half, Nayland let the ball do the work, and Garin did a lot of chasing of the ball and towards the end of the match, the girls were very tired. This completes the sea-son for Garin. They played in the Sunday league, which was a much higher standard than in past years. Motueka dominated the league without losing a match, but the other 5 teams were very evenly matched. Apart from Motueka, Garin‘s biggest loss was a 3 goal margin, and the girls had wins against 3 of the other 5 teams. They also lost to every team at some stage. It was a very even competition with no ‗easy beats‘ in the league which was good for all the teams. The girls finished 5th of 6 in the league but such was the tight-ness of the points table, could have finished 2nd equal had they won their last game. The season was about improvement and enjoyment, and Coach Rob is happy that his aims were ex-ceeded on both levels. The girls can look forward to a great sea-son in 2015, when we hope to go to a tournament provided we can get a squad of 16 players, plus parent help.

Netball Player Develop-ment Programme

Nelson Netball are implement-ing a new programme in Term 4 for 11-15 year old students wish-ing to improve their skills. It will be held at Saxton on Thursday evenings. For more information visit www.nelsonnetball.co.nz Registrations close October 10.

Callum and Jack will be known to many as our Garin College web-masters and designers of our notices system. They are also studying Level One Computer Science by distance learning with the University of Canter-bury. Last Friday Jack and Callum sat a significant Univer-sity exam online. Results? Cal-lum gained 4th place ranking out of all the students doing the course, Jack gained an A pass. A wonderful effort, huge con-gratulations to both of them. Predictably both are off to Canterbury Uni next year em-barking on Computer Science degrees.

Loud Shirt fundraiser

brightens up Garin uniform

look ! –sort of! Very bad taste loud shirt combos

with our school uniform confirmed staff perceptions that our simply elegant traditional look is proba-bly what we want to stay with. Loud Shirt Day fund raised to ―help give young deaf children a voice‖ and though we hold lots of mufti days, we squeezed this one in, because of the obvious need to assist young New Zealanders to make the very best start to life as they can.

We have had a number of hear-ing impaired students attending Garin and admire the way they face and overcome challenges in areas many of us with full hearing take for granted.

Our annual Sports Awards night, organised by our two sports cap-tains and their team of student leaders, was held on Tuesday night. The gym was full of players, coaches and managers of all our summer and winter sports teams as well as over 60 parents. Coach-es of each team judged most com-mitted, most improved and most valuable player and these were presented by teachers in charge and head coaches of each sport. Guest speaker Greg Frame, suc-cessful multi-sport athlete and coach, spoke of setting goals, de-veloping a plan for achieving them and reviewing along the way in order to reach success in sport. Garin students who give their time and expertise so generously to coach teams were also recognised.
