    PRINCIPAL REPORT

There has been a very clear message throughout this week, as families and colleagues were impacted by the Bunyip Bushfire, that we are part of the community and that our community is incredibly supportive. Even now, as people are trying to get their lives back to

normal, the repercussions of the events that started last weekend are far reaching. Not losing anyone in the fires is such a blessing. Kenny Day was a huge success and the money raised will be used to assist those affected by the Bunyip fires.

Berwick College is passionate about improving student learning, encouraging and preparing our students to become productive members of this society. Young people who, as adults, will travel the world, make great contributions to the planet and its people, or maybe stay at home and look after us in our nursing homes. What knowledge and skills do we want them to have when they leave Berwick? We want to work with families to bring up happy, productive people. We want them to be resilient, able to apologise when necessary, to forgive, to be able to fail, pick up and try again.

As a staff we prioritise student learning, while offering extracurricular activities that help our students to grow. I am proud our College was part of the Casey Relay for Life community event. Thank you to all the staff, parents, students (past and present) who supported our VCAL students with their organisation and commitment to raising funds for Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services and to our VCE students who joined in the walk.

The reports in this newsletter on the activities our students and staff have undertaken in the past few weeks have been testament to our priorities. The annual Swimming Carnival, Snorkelling and Surf Camps, Year 8 Coastal Fieldwork, Shakespeare at Rippon Lea, Year 9 ‘The Effects of Happiness’ performance, helping local primary school children in Maths all contribute to the growth of our young people. We were also champions in Division Swimming. I am very proud of our young people.

Today in our Professional Learning Day our staff will be focused on many areas of professional learning, looking to improve our practice and to assist in lifting student achievement outcomes, wellbeing and engagement in learning, and to understand how trauma can affect a student’s learning.

Brad Battin MP visited our school last week for the whole school assembly on Thursday 28th February for the formal induction of our College Captains and recognition of our new Learning Team Captains.

We appreciated Kane leading us with an amazing rendition of the National Anthem and Mr Roger Hall, College Council President who attended and assisted in presenting our 2019 leaders with their badge and certificate.

Congratulations to O’Donoghue for winning the Swimming Carnival Learning Team Cup and to our Swimming Age Champions, Reward & Recognition Badge recipients and 2018 Year level Dux students who were also acknowledged.

We had 95 people attend for a College tour recently and year 11 students have started practising for the three Presentation Balls which will be held in May with the support of The Rotary Club of Berwick.

In a couple of weeks our Year 7’s will enjoy a range of activities such as canoeing, raft making, low ropes courses and the Flying Fox while on camp at Phillip Island. I am sure they will have a fabulous time.

As we are well into the term, students should be very focussed on their learning, ensuring all work is handed in for assessment as interim reports will be written shortly.

We are looking forward to meeting parents in the upcoming Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews, continuing to build on the positive relationships and partnerships within our school community.

    Ms Kerri Bolch—Principal

...we are part of the community and that our community is incredibly supportive.

    SWIMMING HOUSE CARNIVAL

The Berwick College Swimming Carnival was a day full of sun, colour and excellent participation and achievements by our students. It was a very hot 35 degrees, but it meant that we had many students in both the 50m and novelty pool, having a go at the number of events offered across the day and earning points for their learning team. A huge number of students also dressed in their house colours (and the Year 12 students in their best costumes) to encourage and support their learning team in this school event.

O’Donoghue students performed very well on the day, taking out the house swimming trophy for 2019, finally knocking Chisholm out of their 7 year streak. A great effort!

YEAR 10 HISTORY - SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE

On Friday of week 3 Year 10 History students, accompanied by Mr Roberts and Mrs Lewis spent a day at the Shrine of Remembrance.

The excursion was an opportunity for students to see artefacts from Australian involvement in World War II and to consolidate their classroom learning with a more hands on activity.

Students were an absolute credit to our College and Shrine staff were quick to comment on the courtesy and respect our students showed. We were extremely proud. This solemn and beautiful place resonated with all in attendance.

    YEAR 12

Welcome back to the school year for our Year 12 students and before we know it we are beyond the half way mark of the term. Classes have started smoothly and events such as Orientation Day, VCAL camp, the swimming carnival and relay for life have all been great opportunities for our students to involve themselves in the events that Berwick College has to offer.

As the year progresses there will be a number of activities running and we will keep you updated with these. A big one being the Staff v Student basketball match that we are hoping to have at the end of the term following the large success that it was last year. Our school captains have been really proactive in their role and it is great to see their enthusiasm for the year ahead. Please see below a small piece from each of them. Looking forward to a great year ahead! Mr Watson and Ms Dikeos

I’m excited for the year ahead. I’m so honoured and blessed to have Ethan, Tara and Himeth as my partner captains, and I believe we will accomplish so much. The 4 of us share ideas that are all so alike, it’s so easy to share thoughts. I chose to be captain for the pure reason of wanting to create an ideal space for students of all year levels. Since I began at Berwick College, in year 7, I have been welcomed with open arms. I have made friendships that I will cherish and adore for the rest of my life, and I hope to develop that with students now. Orientation day was a day of learning and realisation.

So many year 12’s were able to realise the amount of time and effort needed to pass the year, and I think that was really important for all of us. The lecturers were all so kind, and effective in their teaching, allowing us, as students to benefit as a whole. The experience enabled students to gain a sense of life as a university student, and encouraged other students to visualise their future, furthering their education. As a whole, every student gained a sound level of experience, and thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the sausage-sizzle-lunch and the circus skills at the end. Susie Rake

Hi, I’m Himeth Maputugala, one of the four school captains at Berwick College. The reason I decided to enrol for captaincy was gain a better understanding of the school community and to also position myself where I can be of assistance to staff and students at the school. The world moves around us without us even knowing, people age and society changes, and I want to be there to help others cope with this change. Social media and stereotypes have such an impact on our lives now and I want to be there to help others by being as some-thing as simple as friend in need. I firmly believe being a School Captain allows me to pursue these passions and do more for the school community.

With that, I would like to oversee many things blossom this year. There are countless fundraisers and worthy causes that I believe we can provide for as well as creating awareness amongst the college community. As this is my final year at the school, I can see my new-found role, and the countless hours of studying I must do ,will occasionally collide however, this is a challenge I will willingly meet head-on. I think it is essential to overcome so I can uphold my promises and hopefully be of assist to everyone who requires it. I look forward for the year to come and I hope I can be the best there is for Berwick College. Himeth Maputugala

I became one of the 2019 college captains for a few reasons, the main two being the chance to improve the school and a way to pay back the school for what they’ve done for me in the past. As cliché as it sounds I honestly believe that the teachers and students I’ve met during my time at the college have only improved my personal standing. I hope to ensure that cur-rent students and future students have the same experience that I’ve had.

When it comes to making improvements I aim to ensure that individuality and creativeness stay corner stones of our school’s foundation, in addition I hope to assist in the introduction to student lead initiatives within the school. (Ideas thought up by students, for students then implemented by students). Ethan Francis

    ARTWORK AT THE BERWICK SHOW

The amazing artwork exhibited at the Berwick Show, on Saturday the 23th and Sunday the 24th of February, is only a sample of the talent, skill and creativity seen of our Art Students at Berwick College. All students should be commended on their art production. Students produced self-portraits using acrylic paint on paper. This work was inspired by contemporary artist Julian Opie. The year 10 Visual Communication and Design students produced laser cut architectural models of their innovatively designed Birdhouses. The year 11 students created mixed media drawings of their school jacket whilst exploring the theme of identity.

Congratulations to our year 11 talented Photography student Aimee Hyde for

winning prizes in the Photography competition at the Berwick Show. She beautifully

captured visions of our endearing creatures. Well done Aimee.

INTRODUCING OUR CAPTAINS CONTINUED... On the 8th of February, the Class of 2019 travelled to Federation University for our orientation day. The day consisted of many motivational speakers and advisors who spoke to us on how to be successful in our last year of schooling. The day began with our teachers talking to us about how to obtain a good study score and how an ATAR score is calculated. This gave us a good understanding of what is required of us through-out the year to achieve the best we can. The teachers also informed us of events which will be held throughout the year that the class of 2019 really look forward to taking part in. We all then spent lunchtime in the yard, enjoying sausage sizzle and drinks before our special guests came in. Firstly we had Nathan Hull who spoke to us about his experiences in year 12. He told us that his motivation was to beat his sister’s ATAR score and how he successfully did so. We then had a lady from Elevate who gave us study tips to follow for the year ahead. After she had finished, we learnt circus activities as a fun end to the day. Overall it was a successful day and the Class of 2019 gained a lot of knowledge on how to stay motivated and study hard to achieve the best we possible can! As school captain I’m so excited to work with students, teacher’s and my fellow captains to make 2019 the best year possible! I applied for the role of school captain in hope to have a voice at Berwick College and speak on behalf of the students. I want to make every student feel welcome at our college and make everyday exciting for students to attend school. I would like to be a role model for our younger students and work closely with our teachers to create a positive learning environment for all students of the college. I am honoured to be one of Berwick College’s College Captains and am so excited for what is in store for 2019! Tara Kaur

    TRIBE DAY

On the 13th February, 300 Year 7s participated in the Annual Berwick College Tribe Day which included The Amazing Race. The day was aimed at bringing together communities and building positive relationships within our Learning Teams and our Year 7 cohort.

We started off in the Leisure Centre welcoming the Year 7s and watching the Year 9 dance academy students show-case their own choreographed dances on the ‘Effects of Happiness’. Thank you to all students involved, Ms Amy Pyke and Ms Julie Clish.

The day was split up into three sessions, with the first consisting of each class splitting into their Learning Teams with a focus on the College values and what it means to be a part of a community (a tribe) - their Learning Team. Students chanted their Learning Team songs and a real culture emerged within each Team. The student’s received bandanas in their Learning Team colours and began the preparation for The Amazing Race which included setting up their team names.

Session Two (2) & Three (3) consisted of the Amazing Race and a respect and resilience workshop with Youth Out Loud respectively. Youth Out Loud an organisation that brings an exciting way to challenge the way students think and how they can inspire or be inspired by others. The students participated in a number of games run by Steve Brunskill, before breaking up into our Mentor groups. The Amazing Race was a highlight of the day for teachers and students involved. With ten activities to complete, the race was on for the students to cross the finish line! Some of the activities consisted of Obstacle Courses, Sand Scrabble, Write a Rap, Charades, Garden Games and many more. The first teams successfully crossed the line in record time.

The Students couldn’t wait for the assembly which was held on the Friday to announce the winners of The Amazing Race. Congratulations to the Dunlop Learning Team who are The Amazing Race champions for 2019.

SWIMMING SPORTS CARNIVAL It has been a very busy few weeks for the Kenny Learning Team. A big thank you and congratulations to those that attended the Swimming Carnival and swam on the day. Emma Hunter and Georgie Buckland:

We both really enjoyed tribe day, the best part was the Amazing Race. The best game was the bean bag game, it

was fun. Tribe day helped us build our team spirit, when we worked together as a team to come up with a chant

YEAR 7 TRIBE DAY On Wednesday the 13th of February our wonderful Year 7s took part in Tribe Day. It was a day packed full of fun, team building activities and a chance to get to know one another. We started off the day getting dressed up in blue bandanas and getting creative with the face paint. The Year 7s also created a fantastic Frost banner, once again getting quite messy with paint, however the end result was well worth it!

Students competed in an ‘Amazing Race’ that included 10 activities that needed to be completed in small teams. Some of these activities included writing a rap, giant jenga, giant kerplunk and an obstacle course. It was an incredible afternoon watching students work together and encouraging each other.

We finished the day with a presentation from Youth Out Loud joined with our Year 7 mentors. We discussed the importance of getting out of comfort zones and seeking help when we are struggling.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL Our swimming carnival was a fantastic day full of fun in the sun and lots of great achievements. While we finished 7th overall, Mr Oke and Mrs Eddison were really proud of the participation and team spirit from students.

Congratulations to Kelsey Tetof, Ellyana Batty, Cody Norman-Hade, Shenae Kovacs and Jai Metcalfe for making it to the district swimming team.

We wish you all the best for the next stage of the competition.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL The Berwick College Swimming Carnival was another huge success for the Chisholm

Chisholm Charger students who turned up on the day to cheer on the learning team,

participate in competitive events in the 50m pool and also the novelty events.

YEAR 7 TRIBE DAY Tribe Day Our Year 7s had an amazing day. We started the day together as a learn-ing team, discussing our team and college values. Year 7 students along with their mentors attended a presentation from Youth Out Loud, which included an inspiring speech about the impact of bullying and what we can do to overcome it. Students finished the day by competing in an ‘Amazing Race’ competition that included 10 different activities for small teams to complete (as quickly as they could). It was awesome fun and our Hollows students loved the day.

HOLLOWS STUDENT PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENTS From the 15th – 17th February, Will & Harry Sala of Hollows 8 flew to Sydney to compete in the National Series BMX Racing Competition. Over 450 of the fastest riders in the country gathered to compete across several age groups. Will, who competed in the 13’s event, came 5th in his semi, and was ranked 12th overall, while Harry, who competed in the 15’s event, came 9th overall. Will and Harry also have a younger brother in grade 6 who competed, and who will be attending Berwick College next year! Congratulations on your excellent results and we can’t wait to hear more about your successes over the coming year!

What a busy few weeks we have had! Firstly, we would like to congratulate all O’Donoghue students who attended and participated in the recent Swimming Carnival (25 Feb). We had an amazing day and came FIRST! We had over 100 students who attended. It is thanks to the people who swam for us that we achieved such wonderful results. Special mention goes to Samantha Sellers who was the under 12/13 girls champion, Breanna Granger the under 14 girls champion and Abbey Thomas who was the under 17 girls champion. These students were the best female swimmers for their age group. We hope that we can keep up the excel-lent rate of attendance and have even more students participating in the Athletics Carnival later in the term.

We recently held our O’Donoghue Awards Presentation (21st February). It was at this event that we formally introduced our Learning team captains Shiloh Phillips and Charlie Jansen, celebrated our excellent attendance in 2018 and various Outstanding Application and Academic Excellence Awards (Top 20 in year level) for their studies in Semester 2, 2018. We had school captain and O’Donoghue student Ethan Francis in attendance to shake the hands of our students as well as Assistant Principal Mr David Busteed. It was fantastic to see many parents and friends present also.

We had 103 students with an attendance rate of 98% or higher. This is some-thing we are really proud of. It is important that students are at school every day unless they are sick.

Our Year 7’s recently participated in Tribe Day. The students were split into smaller groups and had to complete

mini tribe tasks together. Students also learnt about displaying respect, resilience, perseverance, integrity and

achieving their best (our school values) during a presentation. The O’Donoghue classes had a great time. We look

forward to heading down to Year 7 Camp with this group in a few short weeks!

Thank you to all the students who attended the day and swam in any of the events.

Just a reminder to return your loans by the due date please. On Tuesday at lunchtime, Ms Julie Clish will be running a Chess Club. So come along to the Library and join in. Congratulations to those students who have handed in their forms to the Careers Centre. For students who do not gain a placement and hand in their paperwork on time, they will be expected to come to school during the last week of term and they will complete tasks in the Senior School. Unfortunately, they will not receive satisfactory completion of their Game of Life subject.

Students who are enrolled into Game of Life during Semester 2 will receive information at a later date in the year. If you require any further information, please contact your child’s Game of Life teacher or Ms. Laura Germano in the Careers office on 8768 1059.

VICTORIA POLICE WORK EXPERIENCE Applications are now open for Year 10 and 11 students to apply for a work experience placement with the Victoria Police. The closing date for these applications is strictly Friday March 15th. Please encourage your child to visit the Careers Centre for more information. Please Note: If successful, this placement will be scheduled in Term 3 or 4, 2019.

YEAR 10 FLP, YEAR 11 & 12 VCAL STRUCTURED WORK PLACEMENT All students in Year 10 FLP or Year 11/12 VCAL must be working one day per week as part of their school program. Each of these classes has been visited during Headstart and Term 1, and they have been given the relevant paper-work to secure their work placement. It is recommended that they look for a placement that is relevant to their VET/TAFE course and they have all been given a call register so they can track the companies they are contacting.

For students who have not yet secured their placement, Laura Germano will be meeting with them at selected times during their work skills class time to give them assistance.

Laura visited Abbey Corcoran who is currently working at Good Start Early Learning Centre in Narre Warren. Abbey is really enjoying her placement:

“I’ve been working at Goodstart Early Learning for about 4 weeks and I’ve been in the toddlers’ room. My duties are to play with the kids and make sure that they are ok.” Abbey Corcoran

YEAR 11 – CAREERS APPOINTMENTS All year 11 students will participate in a compulsory Careers Education work-shop during term 1. During these sessions students will listen to an informa-tive presentation, investigate careers they may be interested in and research pathways/courses relevant to these careers. The research will include pre-requisites required to enter the identified pathways/courses, i.e., in-school programs (VCE or VCAL), subjects and/or VET courses.

Year 7-10 students will also have an opportunity to be involved in similar Careers Education workshops and/or experience days during Term 2-4. Please contact Careers on 8768 1058 if you would like more information.

YEAR 12 STUDENTS – 2018 – CAREERS APPOINTMENTS Year 12 students will be allocated an appointment (in the next few weeks) to discuss their pathway options for 2020 – while we have tried to schedule these times during their spare periods, there are times where students will need to come out of class.

During these appointments students can confirm their current subjects, as well as career/s they are interested in pursuing in the future. Students will then have an opportunity to research the career/s, pathways and pre-requisite requirements. The term 1 appointments will be followed up by an additional appointment during term 3, where students will be assisted with their VTAC application (for university or TAFE pathways). For those students who are interested in pursuing an Apprenticeship/Traineeship or employment, they will be given assistance with their resume and application process.

As part of year 12 VCAL Literacy Studies, students are currently exploring the topic of Adversity. The VCAL literacy teachers devot-ed some time to discussing the adversity blind and vision-impaired people face in society. On Monday 18th of February, we were surprised to meet two lovely women, Debbie and Kath from Vision Australia. With them was a 13 week old Labrador named Fletch.

We were very intrigued about what they were going to say. They began their speech by talking about who they were and where they were from. Kath started talking about the features of the F2 room, which confused us a little. We then found out that Debbie was vision impaired to some extent. She had no peripheral vision. This surprised us because we didn’t really recognise that she had some loss of vision. Debbie discussed her employment. She worked in insurance and was a team manager. She explained to us how none of her co-workers at her job knew that she was vision im-paired.

Debbie also described the problems and obstacles she faces during her everyday life. This gave us an insight on how her life and many other people’s lives who are vision-impaired cope every day.

We then got some time to meet Fletch. Let’s just say he was very cute and cuddly, but still obedient. Kath was tell-ing us about the process the dogs go through to assist vision-impaired people. The first step of this dog’s life is just like a standard dog’s life - it stays with its mother for 5 weeks then they go to a standard family. The dogs have a L period-like learning plates where they are trained to help the vision- impaired people manoeuvre objects and safely help them across the road. They are trained for 18 months. The main breed for these dogs are Golden Retrievers and Labradors; in other countries, they use German shepherds.

We were very thankful for their time and we are very sad to see Fletch leave. He was extremely cute and made our

PERSONAL GOODS BROUGHT TO SCHOOL AT OWNER’S RISK

Students, staff and visitors often bring personal property to school. Berwick College and the Department of Education and Training do not accept responsibility for private property brought to school.

This includes mobile phones, electronic games, calculators, toys, musical instruments, sporting equipment and also cars parked on school premises.

IF YOUR CHILD NEEDS MEDICAL ATTENTION

Parents are reminded that the Department does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents and guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other transport costs. These costs may be recoverable where it is assessed that it is likely, in all the circumstances, that the injury was caused by the negligence (carelessness) acts or omissions of its staff/volunteers. Reasonably low cost accident insurance policies are available from commercial insurers.
