The Times They Are a Changin....Abhijeet Singh Nirban - IIGJ Alumini

Every industry has it's accepted rules and assump ons about what customers want, when they want it, and how much are they willing to pay. Collec vely these make up the 'industry standards'.The bigger, the older, and more prosperous the industry is, more entrenched these rules of the game become. For most businesses, the key to a strong compe ve posi on and the financial results that come from it – is the ability to conform to these rules, to play the game, to follow what Peter Drucker calls “the theory of business”. A er a point these rules are taken for granted and they disappear from conscious awareness. This is where things start to become interes ng. It is when the industry is most vulnerable – market growth slows, customers seem less concerned with what the product has to offer and only look at price. This is when the rules can be broken. They can be walked around, abandoned, made obsolete or just ignored. Why were Garret Camp (the founder of StumbleUpon) and Travis Kalanick (founder of Red Swoosh), two people outside of the transporta on business, able to create such successful companies that have put taxi cabs out of business? How did two broke roommates (Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, co-founders of AirBnB) figure out that they could rent out their San Francisco lo and start compe ng with Marriot? What should have happened was; the owner of a taxi company should have seen the opportuni es that Uber saw! And Hilton should have started AirBnB, way before a startup realised there was an opportunity in the market. They innovated where their tradi onal rivals did not.The jewellery industry is going through a very similar shi . It has become too comfortable with it's success and is ripe for disrup on.Call of the hour! Jewellers and designers need to wake up every morning and think about how they can put themselves out of business. By that, I mean think about every way another business can disrupt your profit margins and your current success. It would be a lot nicer to see one of the jewellery companies bring about that disrup ve business instead of being put out of business by an upstart who realized the poten al right now. As they say, pu ng yourself out of business is way be er than le ng someone else do it for you…
