Act of KindnessAndrew Henderson in Year 7, received an Act of Kindness certificate at Assembly this week for helping a Year 1 boy, Oliver. Oliver was playing hide and seek with some other Year 1 children, when he tripped and went over on his ankle. Andrew noticed him trip and immediately went over to help and reassure him. He was quite the medic, asking if he could move his ankle and bear weight on it. Andrew then let Oliver’s mother know what had happened. Well done, Andrew – great work.

Year 6 Humanities DayYear 6 were immersed in a variety of activities on Tuesday as part of the Year 6 Humanities Day based around our topic of ‘Moving People’. The pupils listened to stories explaining aspects of the slave trade, which were brought to life by a visiting historian through costume and items from the time. They undertook an art activity, creating tiles using footprints to demonstrate freedom of movement, and completed a trail around the school where they were challenged to unravel a series of tasks linked to the Underground Railroad. The day involved reflection and engagement from all of the pupils, and we were very proud of the way they tackled the tasks. Well done, Year 6, for all of your efforts.

Year 5 Science Fair On Tuesday, Year 5 invited Years 3 and 4 to their postponed Science Fair. The pupils were enthusiastic to demonstrate what they had learned during their recent topic ‘Making New Materials’. Demonstrations ranged from artwork created from various objects covered in material and homemade lava lamps, to experimenting with gloop and eggs from a great height. The Year 5 pupils worked hard to provide clear and thought-provoking posters and we were very proud of their achievements. Year 3 and 4 pupils were asked what they had enjoyed seeing:Tom B - ‘I really liked the water filtering because it was great how the water disappeared down the funnel without the pepper.’Ollie - ‘The gloop thing – because your hand sunk in it when you put it in slowly but when you got to punch it, it was so solid.’Elizabeth - ‘I liked the little talk on recycling and the fun quiz.’Caleb - ‘I enjoyed the lava lamp because I’ve got one at home and it was really cool to learn how it was made.’Amelia - ‘I liked the table where you learnt about plastic bottles.’Scarlett - ‘I learnt lots about the chemicals in the sea - I had no idea there were so many!’Frankie - ‘I loved learning about how Playdoh is made -I am going to try and make some at home.’Miss Newman, Mr Dyke and Miss Gunner

Tea and Music Concert Monday saw our first Tea and Music Concert of the term. Thirty-six pupils entered for music exams this term and this concert was an ideal opportunity for them to practise performing one of their chosen pieces. It was an excellent and varied concert with pieces from Grades 1 to 5. The array of instruments was very impressive including the harp, double bass, marimba, cello, oboe, xylophone, flute, drums, voice and piano. A member of the audience commented ‘that was such a lovely, peaceful and enjoyable hour’.Listed below are the children that took part. Congratulations to you all.Sophie Harbridge, Grace Olding, Amelie Whatling, Maia Giaretta, Tiffany Harbridge, Siobhan Davies, Tansy Fowler, Fleur Kingsford, Edward Rose, Sian Davies, Lilly Marshall-Hudson, Alex Hutchcroft, Pierre Joubert, Izzy Knott, Zara Harrison and James Sclater.

Food Wastage Pupils have been learning about wastage and have learnt the importance of reducing plastic waste, paper waste and school waste. One lunch waste weighed a massive 51kg! Pupils worked out that on average, Year 7 wastes more food then other years.

Word of the WeekThis week, translate the following Spanish word for your chance to win a small prize... ‘ una almohada ’ a) a pillow b) a blanketc) a duvetPlease send answers to the General Office at [email protected]

EAL Pupil of the WeekOur ‘EAL Pupil of the Week’ award goes to Benjamin Perez Quiroga. He has been focusing very well recently on his ‘JuniorApprentice’ project work. He continues totry hard to improve his reading and is also putting in a lot of effort with his writing. We have seen great improvements overthe term. Benjamin always shows interestin whatever topic we are learning about and always has plently of questions! Great work Benjamin. Miss Henson

Sail Boat Training - October 2018Would your child like to sail a 30-metre yacht? Mr Stickley is planning on taking a small group of Year 7 and 8 pupils sailing aboard the Prolific, a 30m Bermudan ketch over the 12-14 October 2018. This would be for current Year 6 and 7 pupils. The Ocean Youth Trust run this sail training boat. The OYT is a reputable company that has been around for years (http://www.oytsouth.org). They will have at least four permanent crew on board, all extremely highly qualified and experienced. We will be sending at least two members of our staff as well. The trip would be run according to the weather conditions, but will start and end in Southampton Water, with the cruising ground around the Solent. The emphasis on this trip will be very much an educational one, with opportunities to learn about chart work, helming the boat, trimming sails and lots more. There will be between 10-11 berths available on board for pupils, and priority will go to those that sail with the school, but there will likely be a few spots available for others. If you are interested in knowing more, please respond to Mr Stickley with just an expression of interest at this stage - [email protected].

Confirmation Retreat Day Pupils took part in a Confirmation Retreat Day which was held at the chapel and started by us sharing cake. There was a mat in the middle of the chapel with some comfy cushions, where we shared ideas and filled in our booklets. Discussions were around different ways to pray. Then we took a trek up Tor Hill dispite the weather being very windy! After our trip up the Tor, we took part in our service for our parents and family to enjoy with tea and lots of cakes. ‘It was a great day.’ - Alexandra Baughan Year 7

Year 3 - Building RocketsYear 3 pupils have built rockets in recent weeks in DT and enjoyed firing them onto Ostrich Green at the end of the project. Pupils had to work out the angle they wanted to fire the rocket and estimate the pressure needed to gain a good flight. The rockets were well designed and con-structed, meaning many safe flights were completed. Well done to all.

Year 7 - Cadbury World TripYear 7 pupils have been looking at Fairtrade, manufacturing methods and company branding in DT this week in preparation for their trip to Cadbury World. Some excellent conversations about healthy eating/healthy living, marketing and production methods have taken place which has set them up nicely for the trip. A round-up of the trip is detailed below.

Champion girls were quick to make the most of the first substantial snow for some years. Mr L took everyone on a snowy walk across the school fields and then we had several snowball fights - we have some talented shots in our house! @championmps

There was much fun in the forest this week when the Chestnut boys enjoyed their evening snacks al fresco. One of the boys commented that ‘food tastes so much better outdoors’. Due to the snowy weather last weekend, the kitchens had kindly delivered lots of baking potatoes, as an emergency meal in case the kitchen staff couldn’t get in. So, as we hate food wastage, we decided to eat them up around the campfire. The boys loved hunting for wood and then sitting around the mesmeric flames chatting and eating away. They also worked out that they could make toast over the fire. Some more successfully than others! @MPS_Chestnut

Boarding Life

On Thursday, the girls wishes came true, and the snow came down much to everyone’s excitement. The following 72 hours were a blur of snow-based activities, from sledging to snowball fights, sledge making to snow angels. @MPS_Hollies

U12 Regional Netball Finals After snow prevented the U12 girls from playing their Regional Finals last week, we were delighted to finally have a bright sunny day at Millfield. In a round-robin format, the girls had to win all six games to be able to qualify for the Nationals. They had not played a competitive match for two weeks, so this was going to be an exhausting day. Our first game was against Taunton School and from a slow start, the U12 girls found their form and won 9-3 . Next up, we met Wycliffe; Millfield were shooting extremely well and managed a very comfortable 12-0 win. We then came across Clifton College. We already knew that Clifton were a strong side, so the U12s had to work extremely hard to produce the win. The girls’ performance on court was fantastic and we managed to secure an 8-2 win. Millfield Prep had two more wins against King’s Hall School 8-5 and Hanford School 8-2. One more game to guarantee a place at the Netball Nationals in Basildon and this was against Dean Close. After an unbelievably shaky start, the girls were showing signs of fatigue; we really needed to produce quality netball to hold on to the win. In the first half, the game was being decided on centre passes. In the second half, Millfield overturned two centre passes from Dean Close to finally win 5-2. A massive congratulations to the U12A team on becoming Regional Netball winners. Mrs Morgan-Hughes

U13 Girls Make it to the IAPS National FinalsThe Regional IAPS was delayed due to the snow and was rescheduled for Tuesday. There were seven teams in our pool and the girls were in great spirits. The group games results;King’s Hall School won 11-3, Monkton Combe won 10-2, All Hallows won 15 -4, Taunton Prep School won 11-6, St John’s on The Hill won 11-2, The Downs School won 9-5. This meant the girls topped the group and would now play 4th from the other pool in our quarter finals, which was Hanford School. The girls continued to grow in confidence and displayed great calmness on the ball to win 21-1. On to the semi finals; if they won they were through to Nationals. Our semi was against The Downs School and after beating them in the group the girls were eager to get playing. Everyone had played every match and there was to be no change for the final stages, final score 15-4. They were through!! But as the U11s and U12s had both won their region the Year 8s did not want to come away short! Wycliffe Prep School was our opposition, who also hadn’t lost all day. After a nervy start and going down 2-0 the girls dug in and started playing to their strengths. They achieved a comfortable win in the end: 15-6. Congratulations to the whole team. A big thank you to Mrs Hazell and the parents who supported us for our regional journey. Next stage IAPS National Finals in Basildon this Friday!Mrs Collins

TennisPlayoffs for the IAPS Tennis mixed team competition (at Millfield on 27 and 28 May) start this week and the compass draws are on the Tennis notice board for the different age groups (just Years 5,6,7 and 8). Anyone who is not on the list, but who would like to play, please see Mrs Thomas asap.

Team of the Week

Equestrain Coffee and Catch-up We are holding a parents’ coffee and get-together at the stables on Thursday 29 March at 3pm. All parents are warmly welcome, even if your child is currently not a rider. We will be looking at the diary for next term with a discussion of Hickstead. Look forward to seeing you all.

‘Team of the Week’ goes to the Equestrian Team. The team attended two competitions where all the riders rode with confidence, style and with great sportsmanship. At their Moreton competition the riders won out of 28 schools. Congratulations to them all for their hard work during those rainy and windy days of training.

SquashTraining for the upcoming IAPS is going well. All selected competitors should take advantage of as many training sessions as they can. Whilst preparing for this competition, you are invited to attend any of the lunchtime, after-school or later sessions at Millfield (Monday and Friday, 5.15pm taxi from the new Reception). Our South African visitors have been getting involved down at the squash courts and seem to be working hard and having lots of fun!

Can we say a big ‘good luck’ to our U11, 12 and 13s who have

all qualified for the IAPS National Netball finals this

Friday in Basildon.

GolfHarriet Lockley has been selected to represent Wales in an U14/16 Internationals against Ireland at Cardigan Golf Club on 24-25 March. The two day match consists of foursomes and individual matchplay. It’s a great achievement for Harriet to be selected for the third year in a row as only the top three U14 girls are selected for Wales. The golfers are all preparing for the first tournament of the calendar year at Weston-super-Mare Golf Club next Wednesday, for the Somerset Schools Championships.

U11A Netball IAPS Regionals The Year 6 girls were in fine form at the IAPS Regionals. After a nervous start and a draw, the girls went on to dominate oppositions, successfully winning every game and being crowned Regional Champions!Kiishi, Millie, Jess and Lilly made superb intercepts throughout the day, with Imogen and Cammie proving to be the mid-court dynamos. Sengul, Maisie and Izzy were outstanding with their clinical finishing, showing the hours of practice really does pay off. I’m extremely proud of their performances and the improvements they have made over the term. Off to Nationals now and further development for these talented young girls. Mrs Bodman Sengul Ceylan, Cammie Collins, Imogen Dyer, Kiishi Faloye, Maisy Gardner, Lilly Hawkins, Jessica Hewitt, Izzy Knott and Millie Stamper.

This week...We took a small group of Year 2 pupils to a local care home during their PSHE lessons. We are going to be talking about families and growing old, so this linked in well. The children took a range of board games and played them in small groups with the residents. It was such a lovely event to observe. Our children were friendly and unfazed by the situation. They laughed and joked together with the elderly people and the games were fiercely fought - no concessions for age or youth on either side! The residents clearly enjoyed the interaction with the children and many were far more animated and chatty than usual. We plan to take a small group once every half term and have a range of activities planned, from teaching them how to use the iPads to salt dough crafts and reading stories. We will also plan some sessions where we entertain them with some songs and poems. This is a lovely way for the children to give back a little to our local community and for them to develop their social awareness and self-confidence in a range of new situations.Mrs Blasdale

Year 2 Visit Residents at The Cyder Barn Care Home This week, some pupils in Year 2 went to the The Cyder Barn care home for half an hour as part of their PSHE. They played games and read stories to the residents. The children were amazing and chatted happily. It was lovely to see the obvious enjoyment from young and old alike. Next term we will be taking the other children to visit.

Year 1 Trip to Gore Farm Year 1 had a fantastic time at Gore Farm this week. We were met by Angela who took us down to the woods through muddy fields. Then we were given a map and learnt how to read the key. Using the map, we followed clues to different posts in the woods and collected story clues. We discovered the story hiding in the woods was The Three Little Pigs. The children had so much fun using the sticks to make houses. We can’t wait to go again in two weeks time.

Pre-School and Frogs Enjoy the Sunshine at PlaytimePreparations for Mother’s Day are well under way in the Pre-School, and the Frogs have been sworn to secrecy! So we thought we’d share some pictures of the children enjoying playtime out in the sunshine which has been lovely after all that snow last week!

Tadpoles Identify Different Species of BirdsThe Tadpoles have enjoyed spotting all of the different birds in the Pre-School garden. With all the cold weather recently they decided to make some bird feeders. Under the guidance of Mrs Landrock the children mixed together oats, cheese, apple and lard. They then squashed the mixture around a pine cone; it was very messy but great fun! The feeders have been hung in the garden and hopefully we will be able to share some pictures of the birds enjoying their tasty snack.

Reception Learn a New TuneThis week, two Reception children started to make their own music. They started by writing down some notes on plain paper. The children then decided they wanted to try to play the music, so Mrs Smith found them a piano! The Reception class now have their very own music corner and we have started a new focus. Watch this space...

Calling All Parents The time has come to start thinking about scenery, props and costumes for our summer production! If you have any spare time and would be willing to help us, please come and join us on Monday 26 March at 8.30am in Mrs Gabb’s classroom. Refreshments will be provided. You do not need to be crafty or an artist!

MINIS - Story ExplorersIt was a great fun-filled week at Minis. The children had the chance to ex-plore lots of famous childrens books through play. There was a porridge oat sensory bin for ‘Goldilocks and The Three Bears’, a ‘Three Little Pigs’ playdoh tray with sticks, straw and bricks, and ‘A Tiger Who Came to Tea’ role play area. We decorated cookies to eat like ‘Norman the Slug with the Silly Shell’ and made slugs to go on our new Minis artwork board in the Pre-Prep Hall. Our main story was ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ in which we made cress caterpillars and ended the session with a role play version of the book where the children got to feed our big caterpillar all the food from the story.

MINIS Plus The Minis Plus children loved all the activities and took pride in all their creations. They also got to make a tiger- print painting using shaving foam and food dye to represent ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’. We had lots of fun popping bubbles from the bubble machine.
