Meet Connie Rohman: What is “Lost Language?” Our July 10th speaker, Connie Rohman, is a well-known in our local fiber arts community. A native of British Columbia, Canada, Connie’s work is strongly influenced by the landscape of her childhood and the strong light and colors of Los Angeles, her chosen home. Connie studied linguistics in college and is especially interested in “lost” languages. What is “lost language?” Shorthand, Morse Code, telegraphs, maritime flags, and even cursive writing. Connie is drawn to the shapes and lines that can be found in

these lost communication systems, and loves using them in her quilts, whether it’s in the surface design or the actual lines of quilting. Using her own hand-dyed fabrics and techniques including image transfer and embellishment, she creates memorable pieces of art which have been exhibited throughout California and beyond. Welcome to the beginning of another Fiscal Year for the Glendale Quilt Guild! I want to start this year by welcoming the newly elected Board. We have settled into our new facility at the First United Methodist Church of Glendale, and we are ramping up for our FUNdraising events: Bingo in October, and the March Quilt Show. I want to thank all of the Board members for their service and commitment to the guild in the last year. We could not be successful without your hard work. But now, let's look back at the year we just finished. It is too easy to be caught up in the day to day events and we can lose sight of the big picture. So, what happened with our guild in the 2018-19 Fiscal Year?

In October the guild received notification from IRS that our 501(c)(3) status was approved. A

huge thank you must be given to Colleen Shier, past president, who made it her mission to work tirelessly for this change. Loving Hands, the guilds charitable arm, is a key component for receiving this status. In March the membership voted to increase the dues for members and affiliate members. Dues hadn't been increased since October 12, 2010. In the intervening nine years our fixed costs have gone up while membership has decreased. I applaud the Board and the members for recognizing the need for the dues increase. The Bylaws were subsequently revised to reflect the change in 501(c)(3) status, removal of the Library, increase in dues, and other changes to keep our Bylaws up to date. A huge thank you to Sharon Bishop, Parliamentarian, for guiding us through these changes. Her help was invaluable. Loving Hands, led by Cindy Abrams, Susan Edwards, and An Burgess, continued to have another successful year. They introduced a new program to make "heart pillows" for the cardiac care unit of the Veteran's hospital. This is in addition to the hundreds of quilts being given to organizations throughout our area. I thank this dedicated team for their planning and organizational abilities. . I applaud everyone in the guild who contributes so faithfully to Loving Hands to share our love of quilts, and quilting, with others We continued to have fun with fundraising. Thanks to the great team of Cindy Abrams and Cindy Tanaka, and helpers, for creating fun, exciting, and popular Opportunity Baskets. The "Dine-In" program has been a great addition to our fundraising and makes a fun lunch or dinner date to plan with our families and guild members. I must recognize Kate Ung and her son, Roger Velarde, for their contributions to making the Dine-In program a success. The guild also had a booth at Stitches So Cal 2018, with a display of challenge quilts. The very successful "Under the Big Top" Home and Garden Tour, plus Luncheon was held on October 20, 2018. It seems so long ago now. The popular "Under the Big Top" opportunity quilt winner was announced at the event. The success of this event was due to the great teamwork of the committee, led by Kathi Coleman Wilson and Craig Coleman. A big Thank You to Kathi and Craig for their hard work and for providing a road map for the guild to use for future fundraising efforts.

Rasa Read debuted the 2019 Opportunity Quilt "Ballyhoo" to great fanfare at Road to California and continues to lead us in our fundraising efforts with Bingo and the Quilt Show. I look forward to working with her on these events. We can't forget the fun times we had this year with the "Oh My Stars" Block of the Month, led by Leanne Compean and Kathy Fogel, or the Christmas "Holiday Taffy" Block Exchange led by Kathi Coleman Wilson. The fun continued into 2019 with the Bus Trip to Road to California led by Flo Cohen, the "Chinese New Year" Challenge led by Kathi Coleman Wilson (which resulted in a beautiful display at the March meeting), and the ongoing "House" Block of the Month led by Tina Curran. Can you believe we did all that in just one year?? I have high hopes for the coming year, with a lot of fun times, some hard work, and a lot of laughter. I believe we are going to have a successful and fun year ahead.

Happy Quilting! Tim Spinn, Glendale Quilt Guild President

The May 17th Loving Hands Workshop participants flowered (pun intended) with productivity as thirteen volunteers met and spent the day together. Special thanks to Hester Bell, Jackie Carlos, Kate Ung, An Burgess, Bev Underwood, Cindy Tanaka, Helen Deamos, Barbara Masuyama, Louise Rupp, Kathi Wilson, Susan Edwards, Annie Laurie Babson and Cindy Abrams, who stitched, sliced, sewed, squared, measured, matched, joined and just had fun. Although Kathy Euler, our Chief Quilt Inspector, was unable to attend, our intrepid volunteers picked up the pace - “mission accomplished”! Thirty quilts were distributed to Los Angeles County/USC Hospital transported by Elvie Quintos and VA Heart pillows (30) were donated to the facilities in North Hills and Westwood. Our four footed friends at Pasadena Humane Society accepted 15 quilted pet beds: a good use for quilting and batting scraps. More quilt distribution to follow. News next month about the Seven Star Foundation YMCA Camp Whittle Quilts: all 34 of them! We made our goal thanks to many, many generous volunteer hours. The General Meeting LH donations were made by Mary Ann Kroening, Beverly Underwood, Leah Bessey, Mary Jamora, Susan Edwards, Crystal Dudley, Dottie Ahrens, Joliene Blanchard, Elvie Quintos, Aviva Nizani, Tsuya Emi, Flo Cohen, Kathy Fogel, Peggy Schiffman, Kate Ung, Mary Jamora, and Margaret McNeil. Everyone is invited to visit the LH table during our social times before the meeting and at the break to admire the beautiful quilts, receiving blankets, and pieced tops on display. Thanks to everyone who bought raffle tickets (proceeds to support Loving Hands) in June. Your generosity keeps our charity program thriving. We are ever grateful to Candy Lee from Candy’s Quiltworks for monthly top quality beautiful fabric donations. The next LH Workshop is on July 19 from 10 until 3 at WAC. Join us! You will be welcome by all and will most likely, leave with a new friend or a new quilting idea. Always remember LH Volunteers that you are talented, you are appreciated, your work is valued, and you do make a difference. Submitted by Susan Edwards, An Burgess and Cindy Abrams

Fifty members attended the June meeting. Twenty-one more quilters renewed their memberships. Membership renewal forms are available on the website and at the membership table during meetings. Drawing baskets were awarded: blue ticket winners for attendance were Alice Hsu, Pat Heydon, and Rebecca Fletcher. Red ticket winners for wearing their badges were Judy Parker and Caren Ryan. (Thirty-two quilters were their badges--more than half the attendees!) And we thank Roger Velarde for delivery to ticket winners--he was rewarded with a ball, a gift from Rasa Reed. As we, Pat and Karen, department from our membership chairmanship, we thank you for the opportunity to get to know you better--be sure to come by to greet us at future meetings. We assure the incoming chairs that they too will enjoy this time, and we know they will serve you well. The luncheon for new members was an informal get together where everybody had a chance to get better acquainted while dining on quiche, salad, and dessert. At the end of the luncheon each member was gifted a goodie bag. The event was a special way to welcome new members to the guild; we are so pleased they have joined us. Pat Golditch and Karen Millman, Membership Co-Chairs

At the June Potluck several (and I mean several) of you have asked for Aviva’s recipe for her nut and seed cookies - so here it is. Thank you Aviva!

Aviva’s Famous Nuts and Seeds Cookies 1/2 cup each - 1 cup sunflower seeds*

Slivered almonds* 1 cup sesame seeds*

Cashew pieces* gg whites from 2 large eggs

Pumpkin seeds* 1/2 cup sugar

*Note: all nuts and seeds are raw

=====

Preheat oven to 325

In a large bowl, mix the nuts and seeds.

In a separate bowl, mix egg whites and sugar. Pour into and combine egg white mixture with the nuts mixture.

Spoon in small mounds (about 1tb) onto a parchment lined cookie sheet, and flatten slightly.

Bake about 20 minutes, until just starting to turn golden brown around the edges.

Let it cool completely. Peel from parchment.

If bottoms of the cookies are very sticky, you may bake them upside down for 5 minutes. Store in an airtight container.

You may add pecans and pistachios to the mixture or omit any of the nuts or seeds.

At the June guild meeting, a total of 15 creative blocks were on display in our BOM gallery, all featuring the “Dream House” theme. As with the past months blocks, it was It was fun to see the variety of blocks. Not surprisingly, this group of blocks featured several quilting “she sheds.” As in previous months, with help from young Roger, we randomly selected the next Block of the Month house theme – “Power House.” This is the program’s fifth house theme, after “Open House,” “Summer House” and “Dog House” and “Dream House.” Using the pattern and instructions available either as a hand-out at the meeting or on the GQG website, participants are asked to make a 12-1/2” x 12-1/2” house block using the “Power House” theme – however they wish to interpret it. The provided pattern as the basis for your block but can and be tweaked if/as desired, or ignored. Additionally, the fabric choices and any embellishments (if added) should reflect the “Power House” theme.

Participants should bring their “Power House” blocks to the July meeting. Just as in recent months, upon arrival at the meeting, please turn in your block to “The BOM Gallery,” where all the blocks will be on display. This way, everyone can see how this house theme was interpreted by all the participants. During the July meeting, the sixth house theme will be randomly selected and announced. At the end of the meeting, everyone will take home their own “Power House” block If you did not participate last month, or at all as of yet, feel free to catch up -- or just do the blocks you want to do. It will be fun to see the blocks turned in at our next meeting. Tina Curran
