October 18, 2017 General Meeting Program
Evaluations of 2016 and 2017 Dessert, Fruit, Exotic, and Sparklers
Join your fellow SHW members and visitors for the evaluations of your 2016 and 2017 dessert, fruit, exotic (think flowers and vegetables), and sparkling wines. We are honored to have Scott Harvey, of Scott Harvey Wines, return to our company. Bring two bottles of your wine for evaluation and make sure you complete the wine evaluation form that can be found on our website (www.sachomewine.org). The form cues you into recording the infor-mation that Scott, and your fellow members, will need to know in order to provide you with valuable feedback. Whether you are pleased with your 2016 wine, or puzzled about your very new 2017 wines, you will have a unique opportunity to be given suggestions for improvement, or salvation. Ex-President Joe McGilivray will moderate the evaluations.
Based on input from members, we will also be setting up an “ask a mentor” table where SHW mentors will be stationed to sample your 2017 wines and give you feedback as to what might improve it, pre-bottling.
The meeting starts at 7 pm upstairs at the Turn Verein meeting hall located at 3349 J Street, Sacramento. The building’s parking lot can be accessed by driving around the block to the back. Doors open a little before 6:30 pm. Bring 2 wine glasses and a bottle of wine to share.
Your help in setting up and cleaning up at meetings is appreciated.
Please consume responsibly. Contact a Board Member if you find yourself beyond your limit and we will make sure you get home safely.

I am coming into the home stretch – both as your 2017 President, and as your fellow home winemaker.
Most of my dreams as your President have been realized – continued presen-tation of excellent monthly programs, a well-run Jubilee Competition, continued expansion of our educational opportu-nities for both new and veteran home winemakers, and a deepening and wid-ening actualization of the SHW culture, what I can only term the “Wilkinson” way. In tribute to Henry, it is our duty to live the SHW culture in every way we can: mentoring each other, sharing our successes as well as our failures freely, and most of all, having fun mak-ing wine! I still dream of an overnight mixer and dinner with the Sonoma wine clubs, a focus group on making sparklers, a series of training on how to judge wine, and a women’s home winemaking focus group. But, let’s leave something for next year!
As far as my 2017 wines, I am also in the final stretch. The Sauvignon Blanc is now clearing nicely in my 40 de-gree outside refrigerator; next step fining in February. Both the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Malbec are finishing malo-lactic fermentation and have been racked off the gross lees; hope the recent warm temperatures push the m-l to completion. My Black Muscat dessert wine is a work in progress – deepening in color as it settles, and recover-ing from its midnight meeting with over a gallon of 192 proof grape spirits – talk about a hang over!
I am off to Belgium for a Lonely Monks Beer tour, but you will be in able hands for our October meeting on Oc-tober 18th. Scott Harvey, of Scott Harvey Wines (SHW, yes I know), will evaluate our 2016 and 2017 sparkling, dessert, fruit, and exotic wines (flowers/vegetables, etc). Joe McGilivray will moderate the evaluations, so bring 2 bottles of these wines and be sure to complete and bring two copies of the wine evaluation sheet that is found on our website.
See you all at the Harvest Dinner on October 28th!
Happy Winemaking!

Message from the PresidentMessage from the PresidentMessage from the PresidentMessage from the President Please Enjoy Responsibly
Far better than any Gold Medal, the best reward for making a great wine is simply enjoying and sharing a bottle with friends and fellow wine makers. SHW wants to remind you to please do so responsibly and be aware of your capacity to drive and get home safely. Our number one priority is making sure all SHW members make it home from club meetings and events without in- jury to themselves or others. If you find yourself or a friend a glass or two beyond being able to do so, please notify a club officer imme-diately so we can assist in arranging safe transporta-tion home.
Holiday Dinner & Silent Auction It's time again for everyone to be thinking about con-tributions for the Holiday Dinner Silent Auction and Raffle. The committee was blown away last year with all of the fabulous items that the members do-nated. Some ideas for donation are events, like win-ery tours, olive oil tasting, vacation get away and ravi-oli making parties. Many of the members have tal-ents in addition to wine making and could donate services like tech support, knife sharpening, handy-man services or bread making classes. The committee loves all the "things" that are donated but it would be so helpful if we could have these items in advance of the dinner so we can display them to their full poten-tial. The committee is also soliciting Gold Medal Winning wines for the "Nothing but Gold " baskets but let us know if you will be making a contribution and we can be sure your wine is properly identified in the basket. If any of the members have connections with wine or food or fun businesses and can solicit items from them, we will do our best to promote anything they might donate for this event. The committee and the raffle reindeer are looking forward to another great event. Contact Vickie Rosalli at [email protected] and 916 988 2620 for questions or to provide information about Silent Auction or Raffle items.

Annual SHW Holiday Party – Dinner and Fundraiser
Mark your calendar for December 13, the second Wednesday in December for SHW’s annual dinner party and fundraiser.
The party will be in the same Turn Verein ballroom as our meetings so just put your driver on auto-pilot, bring a couple bottles of wine and enjoy an evening of great food (Calyn’s back with her prime rib and those desserts!) and fun company with fellow winemaking diners.
Be a part of the fun! Please volunteer for the Holiday Party Committee. Vickie Rosalli, Fundras-ing Coordinator needs your help in securing donations for the silent auction and raffle and logisti-cal assistance. Dinner Coordinators Fred Millar (text 916 576-9596) and Gin Yang (text 916 217-0294) are looking for tabletop centerpiece donations (8-11 tables), and recommendations for a small entertainment ensemble.
Reservations details in the November issue of The Grapevine.
