Chaplain’s Message

In Christ's Love

Greetings Brother Knights,

In my first Chaplain’s message, I would like to pen down few lines on how-to live-in

Christ’s Love.

The real power or influence to impact the world is the power or the authority of love.

Understand, love is the most powerful and significant component or ingredient the world

has ever seen. Nothing, absolutely nothing, effects nor affects the quality of life as love

does.

Love is a healer of all manner of human hurts. Even medical research is discovering.




Not even death could stand up to its strength……Nothing can separate us………

I am writing about the spiritual emotional attachment of divinity towards humanity which

operates in faithfulness, forgiveness, and fostering. This love is called “Agape Love” and

is manifested clearly through the righteous deeds of almighty God.

Therefore, the ultimate measurement of our lives does not depend on what we possess,

rather our lives will be assessed by our ability to display and exhibit the love of God

which is found in agape. Things begin to change as you begin to operate out of agape. The

Bible says that, Jesus loved his own to the very end.

Remember their unfaithfulness, and then consider that Our Lord could love them beyond

even their own unlovable behavior.

Operating out of agape means we operate out of a commitment of relationship that defies

logic or common sense. It just doesn’t make sense. Because when you are working in

agape, for the love of God, when you begin to understand agape, you understand that you

relate to people who may have it in for you.

It’s easy to love those you get along with, someone who enhances your lives; however, it

is not so easy to love someone who has intentional desire, design, and dedication to do

you harm as an individual. They are out to ruin the quality of your life that’s when agape

takes on extraordinary power in your life.

God gets the glory out of your life when you are in service to humanity.

Grand Knight’s Message

Brother Knights:

February is a month that we should seize as an opportunity to lay in the ground work for

many upcoming events for our community. Some of these events include a presentation

by Halton Alive on the evening of February 24th

at St. Raphael’s Parish Hall, Trivia Night at

Columbus hall on the evening of March 6th

, Founder’s Day Mass on March 27th

at St.

Raphael’s Church, the planning for the K of C Charity Golf Tournament in June, as well as

the organization of the 60th

anniversary celebration of our council this summer just to

name a few. Before we know it, these events will be upon us and we will need to work

together by pulling in our resources to help make these venues a great success. We need

to invite our family and friends to come out and support us in order to bring us all closer




in fraternity, and to socialize and know each other’s family on a deeper level. We are all

part of God’s one big family and we must love and respect each other as brother Knights.

Faith in action is a focus for us as a council. With the recent passing of our brother Jude

Malone, a true and fine example of what a brother Knight should be, we learned that we

must carry on the many tasks that we are called upon to do by our savior to help the less

fortunate within our great community. There is still much work to be done, and we need

“all hands on deck” as we move forward into this fraternal year. February is the month of

love (Valentine’s Day), and we must be mindful of the love that Jesus has bestowed upon

each one of us and our families. We must be thankful for the unique gifts and skills that

God gave us so that we can utilize them to serve him accordingly.

PSALMS 52:8

But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love

forever and ever.

THE BURLINGTON KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

“RELIVE THE BIG BAND SWING ERA”!

Sunday, February 23, 2:00 TO 4:30 PM at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre

An afternoon of music as we “Relive the Swing

Era” featuring the Toronto All-Star Big Band. If you missed the concert last year, now is the time for you to put it in your calendar. Better still if you want that preferred seat, now is the time for you to reserve your seats. The price per ticket is only $45.00. You can go on-line to reserve your seat by calling the box office at 905-681-6000 or by going to their website at www.burlingtonpac.ca.

Halton Alive

Halton Alive will be conducting a talk and presentation on February 24th

at St Raphael’s

Church at 7 pm. This event will be conducted in lieu of our fraternal night in February.

Please plan to attend this event. Light refreshments will be served.

Council Trivia Night

There will be a Trivia night held on the evening of March 6th

, 2020 at the Columbus Hall.

Tickets are $10.00, doors will open at 7 pm and the quizzing will commence at 7:30 pm.

There will be door prizes, raffle prizes, and prizes for the winning teams from each




round. There will be refreshments served and a cash bar. Please tell your family and

friends to join us for a fun filled evening of trivia to help raise funds for charity.

Cash Calendar

There will be a draw at the end of January for the cash calendar. Results of that draw will

be published on our website shortly after the draw as well as in our March council

newsletter.

Golf Tournament for 2020

The planning for this event is underway. More details to follow.

Notice of Motion- Halton Columbus Charities

John Bennett,, Secretary & Treasurer of the HCC motions that the council approve $26,000 for the 2020 HCC Distribution Plan. The HCC Distribution Plan is the working frame work for planned donations to eligible charitable organizations that Council 5073 supports on an ongoing basis.

BURLINGTON KOLUMBUS CLUB

NOMINATIONS

The Kolumbus Club is the holding company of the

Knights of Columbus home. This company was formed

to provide and maintain the property on Industrial

Street. It is registered with the Government of Ontario

and operates under Letters Patent. There are no

shareholders in this company. All members of Council

5073 of the Knights of Columbus are members of the Kolumbus Club by virtue of their membership in the

Knights of Columbus.

A Board of ten (10) Directors administers it.

· The Grand Knight and the Financial Secretary hold

two (2) of the Director positions automatically by

virtue of their office. That is referred to as

"Ex-officio, Ipso Facto."

The other eight (8) Directors are elected from the

General Council Membership. The term of office is two (2) years.

· An executive of four (4) governs the Board of

Directors: President, Vice-President, Secretary and

Treasurer.

· These executive positions are elected from the

group of eight (8) Directors each year by the

Board of Directors.

· The term of the executive positions is one year.

· Although the Grand Knight and Financial Secretary

have the same voting rights as all the other Directors, they do not serve on the Kolumbus Club

executive.




NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS

To provide continuity, we elect four (4) Directors each

year. The term of office is from April 1 to March 31.

Nominations for four (4) Directors will start at the

February General Meeting. Elections will be held at the

March General Meeting. If you are interested in serving on the Board of

Directors, ask a Brother Knight to nominate you or

speak to the Grand Knight. If you think another

Brother Knight would like to serve on the Board of

Directors, speak to him and ask him if you can

nominate him.

The Cash Calendar Early Bird Draw Winner on November 22, 2019

Congratulations to Margaret Hribijlan, who won $250.

Basketball Free Throw Competition

The basketball Free Throw Competition that took place at Notre Dame Secondary School

on January 18th

, 2020 was a great success. We had between 200-300 participants

representing schools all over Burlington. We would like to thank all the brothers from

our council who came out to assist at this event. There were brothers from our council

who assisted brothers from other councils in the set up of the event the night before, as

well as those who helped out on the day of the event with registration and scorekeeping.

Obituaries

Brother Sir Knight Jude Anthony Malone passed away on January 13th

, 2020. Jude was an

active member of our council for many years and was also a member of the 4th

degree

assembly 3176. Jude served the Lord in so many ways that he was very active in many

charitable organizations including, the Good Sheppard, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Patrick’s

Parish, Dr. Simoni, and many others as well. Jude leaves behind his wife Barbara, his

granddaughter Kendra, and his son Kevin’s family. He also leaves behind three sisters and

one brother, plus many neices and nephews in Ireland. Jude will be deeply missed by the

Knights of Columbus. He, along with Ignatius McDonald, inspired many Knights including

our present Grand Knight to join the Knights of Columbus. Jude was truly an example of

what a Knight of Columbus should be. We honored brother Jude with 3rd

and 4th

degree

honor guards at his funeral.

Malone’s funeral. Father Hodara not only conducted the homily for brother SK Jude

Malone’s funeral mass, but he also officiated at brother Rocco’s sister’s wedding over

forty years ago. Father Hodara was our former chaplain for council 5073.




Cleary Thomas Percy passed away on January 12th

, 2020. Cleary was a member of St.

Patrick’s Parish and served in many capacities within the parish including organizing

euchre night with his wife on Thursday evenings at the parish hall. He and his wife also

participated in the passion narrative at one point which was the dramatic account of

Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for our sins. Cleary was also an active member of the

Knights of Columbus Marian Council #3881 in Oakville. Even though Cleary was not a

member of council 5073, our brother Knights honored him at his funeral with 3rd

degree

honor guards by standing shoulder to shoulder with 3rd

degree honor guards from

council #3881. He will be dearly missed by his wife Janet and his extensive family.




Knight in Fraternity Action Overseas Brother Sir Knight Colin Pye recently went to the Philippines on a business trip, while there he decided to pay a visit to Council 1000. Attached please find some photos from the hall of Manila Council 1000, the oldest council in the Philippines, right next to the Cathedral. Colin had the pleasure of meeting their Grand Knight, SK Eusebio L. (Joey) Lat and he sends his fraternal greetings to Council 5073. Msgr. James Corbett Warren Memorial Council
