Joe tried on the suit; it fit-

ted perfectly.

As Joe admired himself in

the mirror, the salesman

asked, "How about a new

Joe thought for a moment

and then said, "Sure."

The salesman eyed Joe

Joe was surprised, "That's

The doctor said, "Joe, the

good news is I can cure

your headaches.

The bad news is that it will

require castration.

You have a very rare con-

dition which causes your

testicles to press on your

spine, and the pressure

creates one hell of a head-

ache."

The only way to relieve the

pressure is to remove the

testicles.

Joe was shocked and de-

pressed. He wondered if

he had anything to live for.

He had no choice but to

go under the knife.

When he left the hospital,

he was without a head-

ache for the first time in 20

years, but he felt like he

was missing an important

part of himself. As he

walked down the street,

he realized that he felt like

a different person. He

could make a new begin-

ning and live a new life.

He saw a men's clothing

store and thought, "That's

what I need... A new suit."

He entered the shop and

told the salesman, "I'd like

a new suit."

The elderly tailor eyed him

briefly and said, "Let's

In 2014, Hawes Building Solu-

tions undertook modifica-

tions to Nicholson Autos in

Matamata. Following on

from this successful project

we were delighted to be

invited to build a new home

for owners Dean and Maree

Nicholson.

Completed in August 2018,

the new home is North West

facing with terrific views

over the golf course. It has

a concrete floor slab, clad

in cedar vertical shiplap

weatherboards and an ex-

ternal insulation plaster sys-

tem on a cavity. Roofing is

long-run colorsteel to a low

mono-pitch design. The site

is terraced with stepped

retaining walls behind the

house.

Hawes Building Solutions

has recently completed

conversions of existing

classrooms at both Mt

Maunganui Intermediate

and Otumoetai Intermedi-

ate Schools, turning into

Flexible Learning Spaces

as part of the schools

commitment to provide

innovative learning envi-

ronments for students.

A flexible learning space

has the right acoustics,

lighting, technology, heat-

ing and air quality to sup-

port learning. The spaces

can be easily configured

and used in a number of

different ways to support

and enable a range of

teaching and learning

approaches on any given

day, or at any time of the

day. They can support

single teacher whole

‘class’ teaching practice,

and can adapt to a

broader range of teaching

and learning practices

and groupings ,as a

school’s education prac-

tices evolve over time.

At Mount Maunganui Inter-

mediate we took a stand-

ard, 2 classroom block

with central bagbay and

toilets, and converted it

into a larger conjoined

teaching space, allowing

diversity of use within. A

roof canopy was extend-

ed to create outdoor

space that allows classes

to flow indoors—outdoors.

A dark colour palette was

chosen by the architect to

showcase and display the

Innovative Learning Environments

students work.

At Otumoetai Intermediate

a similar 2 classroom block

with central bag bay and

bathroom has been ex-

tended and modified. The

resultant building has 4

conjoined teaching spac-

es, able to be opened up

to each other, as well as

links to outdoor space and

decks. A centralised

teacher work room serves

all 4 teaching spaces.

Breakout rooms for students

are available to use for

small group work, or con-

centrated learning time.

Buildings at both schools

worked to a constrained

budget and Hawes Building

Solutions worked closely

with the architect to pro-

vide a more cost effective

building. The improved

lighting, insulation, heating

and ventilation provided

both schools with teaching

spaces that will adapt to

changing educational

needs.

Halo Guarantee—What is it? The Halo Guarantee is a

comprehensive, 10 year

residential building guaran-

tee insurance, which is

available exclusively to

home owners who use

members of New Zealand

Certified Builders.

Hawes Building Solutions is a

member of NZ Certified

Builders and is pleased to

provide this excellent Guar-

antee to all our Residential

Clients, for both new houses

and alterations.

The Halo Guarantee is ap-

plied for by the builder, nor-

mally at the beginning of

the project—we complete

the paper work and the

owner signs it. We then

submit the application,

along with the premium, to

the agents who administer

the Halo Guarantee system

for Certified Builders. Once

the project has reached

practical completion we

notify the insurer who then

enact the guarantee.

The Halo Guarantee pro-

vides maximum peace of

mind for homeowners in-

cluding:

Loss of deposit if the

builder doesn't start the

building work.

Losses if the builder

starts but doesn't com-

plete the building work.

10 year cover for the full

contract price, for

structural defects

,including weathertight-

ness issues, once the

building works have

been completed.

10 year cover for the full

contract price, for non-

structural defects, once

the building works have

been completed.

It also covers:

Defects arising from

materials and work sup-

plied by subcontractors

and suppliers (one of

the reasons to use the

builders subcontractors

rather than arranging

your own, separate

contracts).

The cost to repair other

damage to the house

caused by the defect,

up to the full policy sum

insured.

Up to 6 months reason-

able alternative ac-

commodation expens-

es while the house is

being repaired.

Surveyors, engineers,

legal and other fees

necessarily incurred to

rectify the defect.

The application is sim-

ple and the insurance is

transferrable, automati-

cally transferring to any

subsequent owners of

the house, giving them

protection also.

If for whatever reason the

builder fails to complete

the building or rectify the

defect, the Halo Guaran-

tee ensures that insurer will

step in and fix the cover.

The cover extends not only

to fixing any defect but also

any damage to existing

structure caused by the

defect.

The Halo 10 Year Residen-

tial Guarantee insurance is

underwritten by Lloyds of

London. Lloyds of London is

renowned throughout the

world and provides excel-

lent financial security with a

financial rating of “A+“

(Strong).
