Life is Good at Hunters Ridge!

Last month the State of Florida Division of Restaurants informed us of recent changes in the State Building and Health Codes and Regulations which affect established State approved restaurants. Through this information we quickly discovered that food preparation for all of our club restaurants can only take place in a totally enclosed, four (4) solid wall area. Because of this, beginning January 30th, all food being offered at our "Ridge" snack bar will be prepared in our clubhouse kitchen. The screen enclosure at the Ridge snack bar is not considered solid walls by the State. All "Ridge" snack bar operations will remain the same. When an order is given to the snack bar attendant, the order is immediately sent to the clubhouse kitchen. The order is then quickly made and delivered to the attendant, who will them immediately serve the member. In fact, you have more of a selection now since the entire grill room lunch menu will be available to you for ordering. Beverage preparation will remain as is with all drinks being made by the attendant in the snack bar. Snacks such as chips, cookies, sodas, ice cream etc are always available as well. All of our other food operations are not affected by these new codes since all food for our Grill Room, Dining Room and Club Patio Bar are prepared in our clubhouse kitchen. Golf Course Superintendent Scott Davis and his staff are working

hard in making our golf course the best it can be in preparation

for both the Men’s and Ladies Member Guest tournaments

coming soon. Please help the golf maintenance staff with filling

all divots and repairing ball marks on the greens. Every little bit

makes a big difference! Compaction of the turf is always a

concern this time of year due to the large amount of play, along

with cooler weather temperatures, so we again ask for your help

on keeping golf carts on the cart paths as much as you can.

Please remember starting April 1st the installation of our new

golf course irrigation system will begin and will continue

throughout the entire summer and early fall months. We will do

our best to keep as many golf holes open as we can while

installing the new system, but there will be times when four to

five holes will be closed at once. The new irrigation system

installation is a large project and we appreciate your

understanding and cooperation as other course horticultural

practices will be taking place as well.

We appreciate your understanding, and should you have any

questions, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Don Huprich,

General Manager

The good news for us, the weather in January has been warm with only a few cold days. The cold temperatures will cause much of the Bermuda grass to turn a yellowish-brown color. Hopefully we will continue to stay warm during February to help keep the turf growing. It is hard to believe this time two years ago; Hole #2 was closed and was being redesigned. One of the wonderful improvements to the golf course. Here is a reminder about how to leave the golf course better than you found it. Thank you for taking the time to read the following.

1. Fixing your ball marks on the greens is important. The greens typically represent 2 to 3 percent of the total turf on a course but it is where the majority of time is spent. It is also the only turf on the course where the ball touches the turf nearly all of the time once it has made it onto the green. So, if there is a surface imperfection in the path of the ball to the hole it can be reflected in the putt. The greens are also where most dollars are spent on a per square foot basis. So, for these reasons the greens should be given the most respect. Not only is it important to fix balls marks but it should be done properly. Ball marks should be pulled in from the outside edges then tapped down with the head of the putter. Lifting up in the middle is not recommended. The idea is to redistribute the healthy turf back across the damaged area. Properly fixed ball marks heal faster. A great practice is to not only fix your ball mark but one more. If everyone did this, it would never be an issue.

2. Be flagstick friendly. Please be careful when removing or replacing the flagstick so the cup is not damaged. Please do not drop the flag stick on the green surface. It should be laid down gently. The total cost for a flag, flagstick and cup is $150. Taking care of the equipment on our greens also makes financial sense.

3. Please use proper bunker etiquette. Always use two hands to rake bunkers to insure they are raked properly leaving them as smooth as possible. Most people only use one hand. And leave the bunker rakes in the proper spot when finished using them. Our rakes are to be left lying inside of the bunker. Enter and exit the bunker from the low side even though it may require walking a little further to do so. Never walk up or down the bunker face regardless of whether that face is sand or grass. This can be quite damaging and not so safe physically. After leaving a bunker please make sure you have knocked the sand off the bottom of your shoes before walking onto the green.

4. Please fill your divots with sand. Drop in enough sand to completely fill the divot before stepping on it to level it with the surrounding ground. And try not to overfill the divot. We are more concerned with getting everyone to fill divots, but it is true that the sand is abrasive and can have a slight impact on the sharpness of a mower’s cutting units so too much should be avoided. If you happen to see an unfilled divot close by, maybe you could fill that one also.

5. Please pick up your tee after teeing off. Not only are tees lying around unsightly, they can be damaging to mowers.

6. There is no doubt that cart traffic is damaging to the turf on the course. In Southwest Florida we have by far the most cart traffic during the time when we have the least amount of turf growth. So, the recovery from that traffic is much slower than in the warmer months. As a rule of thumb, cart paths should be utilized as much as possible. We do still have a 90-degree rule in place. And when using cart paths, try to keep all four tires on the path. Some golfers have a habit of cutting corners a little to close and run over the edge of the turf. You can see where this happens regularly because the turf is worn out there and is usually almost gone. If you could avoid driving in the same path, it would be helpful.

We kicked off "The Roaring 20's" with the Annual Bloody Mary Open. 80 participants in this year's field competing in two (2) flights. The winning team of the Guy Lombardo Flight with a score of 80 was Mary & Steve Curtis with Lee Ann & Steve Shimek. The winning team in the Dick Clark Flight with a score of 81 was Terri & Ben Butler, Jane Kahr & Jim Butler. The closest to the pin winners were: Hole #3 - Ed Lewis, Hole #5 - Karen Birr, Hole #8 - Norman Birr, Hole #16 - Valerie Burch. Congratulations and thank you for starting off your new year with us! The 19th Annual Guys & Dolls Couples Golf Event was a very good field. The golfers had ideal weather on both days. The 19th Annual Guys & Dolls Event was played over the past two (2) days. A little cool both days but lots of sunshine helped make it feel better. Your winning team in the Sky Masterson Flight with a 2-day total of 187 was Paul Epperson, Fred Hubert, Dr. Joanne Schoen and Margie Reilly. Your winning team in the Sister Sarah Brown Flight with a 2-day total of 188 was Gary Harwood, Gary Freels, Sandy Crossfield and Mona Vosen. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you for playing in this fun event!

The 2020 Men’s Hunters Ridge Member/Guest Classic is less than a month away. Check with the Golf Shop Staff to make sure we have your guest’s information and for possible openings. If you have not paid, please drop off a check made out to Hunters Ridge. A full field is expected for the 31st Annual - 2020 Ladies Member/Guest “18 Shades of Green” on Friday, March 13th. An Opening Night Party for you and your guest will kick-off the event on Thursday, March 12th. This event remains optional for this year. Please make sure the Golf Shop has your guest information by February 15th. The 17th Annual Ladies 9-hole Invitational will be held on Thursday, March 26th. Hunters Ridge Election Results

With a successful year behind us, we look forward to the new year. Thanks go to last year’s Board members with a special thanks to former Directors Don Wirsbinski and Keith Glover. Thanks also to current and former Committee members for their efforts in overseeing and improving the community. Committee work is the heartbeat of our community and their time and work is essential to continued improvement at Hunters Ridge. The Board appreciates these efforts . . . also from those former members on the Villa South Committee and especially Mueger who will soon be leaving the community.

Richard Decoste, Fred Forbes, Jerry Hoover, Joanne Schoen

The committee would also like to thank Harold Foote, Bob Moe, Arnie Stull and Ray Townsend for agreeing to run and be part of this year’s election for the Hunters Ridge Board of Directors.

If you would like specific election results, please contact Chris Durfey in the Administration Office.

Election Statistics

The maximum number of ballots to be cast was 558.

Ballots cast by mail prior to the Annual Meeting ................................................. 186 33.3% Ballots cast in person at the Annual Meeting .... 150 26.9% Ballots cast by mail and rejected .......................... 25 4.5% (No Designated Voter Form) Ballots not cast .................................................. 197 35.3% (by mail or at the Annual Meeting) Total Members .................................................. 558 100% Comments: 1) The maximum number of candidates that could be

selected on a ballot was four (4). No ballots were rejected because the voter selected more than four (4) candidates.

2) Twenty-five (25) ballots were rejected and destroyed as the voter only provided the ballot envelope with no Designated Voter form and no other identification on the outer envelope as to who submitted the ballot envelope. If the outer envelope had the voters name, the committee was able to contact the voter prior to the election so the Designated Voter form could be completed.

3) There were several ballot envelopes where the Designated Voter form was signed by a resident other than the Designated Voter. In these cases, the Designated Voter form was resolved either prior to the election for mail-in ballots or on the Election Day at the sign-in table.

The fishing club started 2020 with planning four trips in January. Two were successful and two cancelled because of weather. Our trip on January 16th was one of our most successful and had caught their limit of Grouper by 12:30pm. The grouper ranged from 22 inches to 29 inches. Chuck Fieldman caught the largest grouper at 29 1/2 inches. The trip on January 23rd we fished a half day for Snapper and half day for Grouper. We started fishing 35 miles out and caught some real nice Snapper ranging from 12 inches to 16 inches when we started having problems with sharks. As soon as we had a nice snapper hooked a shark would take it. We counted this happening at least 20 times. We caught 12 nice snapper and decided to move and fish for grouper. The largest grouper was caught by Frank Cassise. Everyone had a nice catch to take home. Such a great day! Make note, our annual luncheon is set for February 25th. We have an excellent speaker planned and an excellent lunch with plenty of door prizes, plan to attend. Happy Fishing, Chuck Ingersoll

President’s Message With a successful year behind us, we look forward to the new year. The Board appreciates these efforts . . . also from those former members on the Villa South Committee and especially from Ed Mueger who will soon be leaving the community. Under the guidance of Bill Berg, the Food & Beverage team continues to make solid gains in quality and service levels. The new patio bar has been a great addition as we move into the high season. Successful weekday and weekend events are drawing record numbers of members. The House Committee is also well positioned to support the Food & Beverage teams continued progress in the new year. Committees would not be as effective as they are if it were not for the support and assistance provided by the Board and Management. The expertise and experience of General Manager Don Huprich has added immeasurable value and assistance to committees and the community. Looking ahead, we will be focusing on our 5 year capital plan developed in early 2019 by the Finance Committee and Board Treasurer. Major projects underway this year include the replacement of the golf course’s 32 year old irrigation system. Annual inspections of golf course conditions are being carefully tracked to determine the optimum times for future greens and fairway turf replacements . . . other major projects in the Plan. The renovation and upgrade of the Activity Center and fitness center as well as repaving our north sector roads are also major Plan investments. Finally, we thank all of you who actively read the ScoreCard, Eblasts and use the Hunters Ridge website to stay abreast of what is happening. As committee meeting schedules are announced, please attend as many meetings as you can and offer your suggestions and ideas. The Board and Committees welcome your input as we plan for the future.
