President’s Message Hello Friends! It feels as if spring is upon us and I am ready! If you have visited the club this winter, you will have seen we contracted a timber company to thin out the wooded area for us. The club owns just under 40 acres and this decision wasn’t made lightly. We hired a company which assured us they had the health of the woods and environment in mind. The simple fact was, we had a ton of dead trees that were choking out the new growth and creating a dangerous environment. Dead trees were leaning against other trees. Walking trails throughout the woods had dangerous dead trees leaning across them. The dead trees and undergrowth also become a fire hazard. With that said, there is a huge number of treetops and branches laying around that need cut up and used. This past weekend I put out an email offering access and help to anyone wanting firewood. The response was great, and the parking lot was full. I think easily 200 truck-loads went out the driveway. I ran a skid loader all day, and I could not keep up with the members who were cutting the wood. As soon as I brought the loader back into the woods they had it filled and I was out dumping it into trucks, trailers, and we filled the club’s woodshed. A big thank you to all that came out to help. As for anyone that wants to get firewood, just give me a call or email me and I’ll steer you in the right direction. I bet with all the wood taken out on Saturday and Sunday, we only touched about 10% of what’s there. I hope everyone is getting the “news” emails. If you know of anyone that isn’t, please forward their email to me. Another important part is the member planet site. Please get your profile set up and you will receive alerts and event info through there as well. Night at the Races is Saturday March 14 th . President’s Message Hello Friends! It feels as if spring is upon us and I am ready!

If you have visited the club this winter, you will have seen we contracted a timber company to thin out

the wooded area for us. The club owns just under 40 acres and this decision wasn’t made lightly. We

hired a company which assured us they had the health of the woods and environment in mind.

The simple fact was, we had a ton of dead trees that were choking out the new growth and creating a

dangerous environment. Dead trees were leaning against other trees. Walking trails throughout the

woods had dangerous dead trees leaning across them. The dead trees and undergrowth also become a

fire hazard.

With that said, there is a huge number of treetops and branches laying around that need cut up and

used. This past weekend I put out an email offering access and help to anyone wanting firewood. The

response was great, and the parking lot was full. I think easily 200 truck-loads went out the driveway.

I ran a skid loader all day, and I could not keep up with the members who were cutting the wood. As

soon as I brought the loader back into the woods they had it filled and I was out dumping it into trucks,

trailers, and we filled the club’s woodshed. A big thank you to all that came out to help.

As for anyone that wants to get firewood, just give me a call or email

me and I’ll steer you in the right direction. I bet with all the wood taken

out on Saturday and Sunday, we only touched about 10% of what’s

there.

I hope everyone is getting the “news” emails. If you know of anyone

that isn’t, please forward their email to me. Another important part is

the member planet site. Please get your profile set up and you will

receive alerts and event info through there as well.

Night at the Races is Saturday March 14th. Doors open at 6:00 pm and

tickets are available at the door. Open to the public. BYOB.

Don’t forget the Club Cookouts on the fourth Wednesday every month

at 6:00 pm. Rain or shine inside or out. Free for members and any

guests the members care to bring.

Feel free to give me a call or email with any questions. You get out

what you put in, and we have a lot to offer so please get involved.

God Bless,

Darryl Barber,

Club President

24th Annual NRA Registered Pistol Match

submitted by John Ross, Pistol Chairman

The West Caln Sportsmen’s Club Pistol Team held its 24th annual NRA registered pistol

match on Sunday, February 2, 2020. Sixty six shooters participated. The overall aggregate

winner was Dan Krupar of Whitehall PA.

Five shooters from our team won awards in their classes as follows:

Expert - Julie Latzgo won first place in slow fire, national match course, rapid fire and

aggregate and third place in timed fire.

- Terry Robinson won third place in slow fire, national match course and rapid fire,

1st place in timed fire and 2nd place in aggregate.

Sharpshooter - Will Poole won second place in slow fire and rapid fire, and first place in

national match course, timed fire, and aggregate.

Marksman - Mike Wasilesky won sixth place in slow fire, second place in rapid fire and

fourth place in aggregate.

- Jim Thoss won second place in timed fire and sixth place in aggregate.

It was a good match and there was plenty of good food. I want to thank all of our shooters

who shot in the match and/or helped to run it and those who scored the targets. Also, thanks

to Keith Davis from the Leni-Lenape Pistol Club of Boyertown who did a great job with the

statistics and print of the programs and score sheets.

Thanks to Cecil Gentry, Anne Marie Smith and Jane Colburn for working in the kitchen.

Please see the match results on the following four pages.

Youth & Family Archery - February 2020 Thanks to USA Archery Level 1 instructor Barry Trout, WCSC offers a 4 week beginner archery course in February and August. Compound bows of varying sizes and handedness are provided.

Students are instructed in the basics of archery, provided equipment suitable for their grip, size, strength, and given the opportunity to try out a new sport. Archers who already own their own equipment are also welcome!

Classes ran on Saturdays in February for approximately two hours. Students are welcome to attend all four classes each month this program is offered, or only attend what their schedule permits. If you can make two classes, you will get something out of each of those two classes. Never tried archery? This is your chance! After initial instructions, students may shoot a friendly competition between each other, or a game target.

Fish Committee

The West Caln Sportsmen’s Club has been conducting a trout program at Hibernia Park since 1970. Every Spring the members have stocked the West Branch of the Brandywine

Creek and the children’s pond in the park, with an estimated 3,000 trout for the fishing season. Included in the stocking of the children’s pond, which is to be fished by children

only, are trophy sized trout tagged with a number that corresponds to a particular prize for the proud child who makes the catch.

The cost of the trout program is partially offset each year through individual and business trout sponsorships. The sponsor’s name is listed on a large color poster made specifically for the season.

Our club would greatly appreciate any support your business could extend toward the trout sponsorship program. A prize along with a donation would go a long way to support it’s continued

success. We would like to thank you in advance for supporting this event that has become so important to so many in the West Caln/Hibernia community.

The following is a list of the program’s dates: Open House at the Fish Nursery March 21, 2020 9:00AM-2:00PM

Trout Stocking March 28, 2020 6:30 AM Special Needs Day May 13, 2020 9:00AM-2:00PM

Volunteers, fishing rods, and donated prizes would be greatly appreciated for the Special Needs

Day. Again the West Caln Sportsmen’s Club and all those who look forward to this program each year, thank you for your support.

Cecil Gentry is requesting help on “Special Needs Day” and

volunteers will please also wear an orange cap!

Firearms Training WCSC NRA instructor team

For over 25 years, WCSC has offered NRA Education & Training Division classes taught by both male and female WCSC members who are NRA certified firearms instructors and volunteer their time to provide this education as a service to the community.

The 2020 schedule is as follows:

NRA Basic Pistol & NRA Personal Protection In The Home

NRA “Basic Pistol” introduces students to the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for

owning and using a pistol safely. Students will learn about pistol parts and basic operation, ammunition, firearm safety and pistol shooting fundamentals. If you do not presently own a firearm this course can offer information that could assist you in a more knowledgeable purchase of a firearm to meet your personal protection requirements.

NRA “Personal Protection In The Home” exposes students to various basic defensive shooting

Rangemaster March WorkdayRangemaster March Workday

The club held its first Saturday workday on March 7, 2020. We had about 15 range-

masters helping out. We did some electrical work in the clubhouse, but mainly cut

wood. A lot of wood!!! And we barely put a dent in it. Overall, it was a successful day.

Thanks to all our rangemasters supporting the program with their time.

Rangemaster SessionsRangemaster Sessions

The January Rangemaster session was well attended. The February session less so.

Attendees were reminded of the range rules and responsibilities of rangemasters at

WCSC. When in doubt, always refer to the range rules which are posted at the club

website.
