April Brings: Linda Schmidt “Short Attention Span Quilting” This “Basic Quick Resume (for those with truly short attention spans)” submitted by April’s speaker, Linda Schmidt describes her quilting style. “I come from a long line of quilting women and started my first quilt when I was eight years old, have made almost all of my own clothing since I was twelve and have made hundreds of quilts since then, having won over 300 ribbons from local, national and international quilting exhibitions. I teach quilting nationally and internationally, do trunk shows with both quilts and garments, am a Finance Technician II for the City of Dublin, was a member of the Alameda County Art Commission for six years and Chairman of it for two years. I am a musician, a composer, an active member of Amador Valley Quilters, IQA, and AQS, and was a founding member of the Network for Wearable Art. I have four part- time paying jobs, three children, one husband, a five-bedroom house I clean myself, three flutes, three guitars, a piano and a B. A. in French that suddenly ceased to be totally useless. In my spare time, I write really bad poetry and am trying to learn sign language. The bottom line is that there is nothing I like better than to talk to people about quilting, unless it is making quilts and wearable art or beading jewelry. I have an eclectic taste in quilts and quilters, an insatiably inquiring mind and a sincere desire to help others learn what they need to know in order to do what needs to be done. Another Great Meeting! Our March speaker Joe Cunningham was wonderful. Everyone enjoyed his singing and guitar playing and his story of how he got his start in quilting. We are looking forward this month to having Linda Schmidt with her program, “Short Attention Span Quilting”. Many of us will relate to this subject! Can’t wait to hear what she says!

We come to the meetings for two main reasons: listen to the speaker and socialize with our friends. The business portion is necessary in order to run the guild, and your board members are working diligently to keep you informed and take up as little time as possible. We ran over time a little in March and will work harder to keep board reports to a minimum. For those who were looking forward to stadium seating, we plan to do stadium seating in May. Workshop The workshop with Linda Schmidt will be a blast. “Creating with Cool Stuff” is an adventure that will stimulate your creative juices. It will expand your horizons as a quilter and build your repertoire of techniques to use in the future. Sign up now and don’t miss out! Congratulations! Congratulations to An Burgess for winning the March opportunity basket! A big thank you goes to Cindy Abrams and Cindy Tanaka for putting the basket together, and Denise Koch and Monica Carrillo for selling tickets. Donations for these baskets help offset our guild expenses allowing us to offer the great programs at our wonderful location. Cost of Doing Business Every now and again a member will ask why we need fundraisers, as we have money in the bank. The past two years our operating costs have slightly exceeded our income, which has caused us to dip a little into our reserve. At our April meeting Kathy Fogel will give a brief overview of where we spend and why, so everyone who attends will have a clear view of how the Board sets a budget and meets the Guild’s fiduciary responsibility. Thank you to volunteers for leadership next term. Leanne Compean and her nominating committee have worked hard to fill the slate for next term. Thank you to all who have accepted. If you still want to be on the Board or part of a “job share” – several chairman positions can be shared – please contact Leanne. See you in April! Happy Quilting, Colleen Shier President

Loving Hands At the March guild meeting, we had 39(!) finished quilts turned in. Evette & Lou Gallo were responsible for ten of the completed quilts. Others were completed by Hester Bell, Joliene Blanchard, Joanne Brown, Lisa Burroughs, Crystal Dudley, Cathy Euler, Kathy Fogel, Mary Jamora, Denise Koch, Annie Raycraft, Alice Turner and Sherryl Zurek. Additionally, regarding our camper quilt project, 172(!) camper quilt blocks were turned in at the guild meeting. Of those, 26 were made long distance by guild member Julie Bloomdahl using her own fabric and mailed to her brother, Tim Spinn, to turn in at the meeting. The makings for the remainder blocks were all adopted either at the guild meeting or at the Loving Hands session two days later. We also had camper quilt tops turned in at the meeting (made by Kathy Fogel and Colleen Shier) that immediately went out the door with those who would quilt them. Yay! And Susan Graham turned in our first three completed camper quilts (see the photo on page 5), which she made with her sister. Remember that Loving Hands now meets the third Friday of the month. So in April, the regular work session will be on Friday, April 20th at the WAC from 10 am – 3 pm. We hope to see you on the 20th!

UNDER THE BIG TOP

Quilters’ Home, Studio & Garden Tour and Luncheon October 20, 2018

The event is coming along…but we can use everyone on board to make it success. Here’s what you can do:

• Purchase tickets (at guild meetings or on-line) for you and your family & friends (this event is limited and tickets are selling quickly). • Attend a work party to help make Give-Aways. We currently have two: May 2 & May 24, 9-3 at WAC. • Sign up to volunteer to help preparing for or at the event (there will be lots of ways to help). Sign up sheets are at the general meetings or contact Kathi Wilson. • Donate a quilt(s) for sale at the luncheon (quilts not sold will be returned to their owners). • Submit a quilt for exhibition at one of the homes on the tour…and maybe win a Viewers’ Choice ribbon. There are 5 categories: Scrap, Fall (think fall colors, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Dia De Los Muertos), Applique, Christmas Time (think Hanukkah, Christmas, Winter), and Quilting Outside the Box (a chance to show those very personal quilts that don’t fit in other categories • Submit a “chicken” quilt for a special exhibit at Hester Bell’s chicken coops. Forms are available at the general meetings. • Keep working on your Challenge Quilt (more ribbons to win!). There will be challenge information at the March meeting if you have not picked up your supplies. • Join us for our next team meeting: Tuesday, April 10, noon at WAC. Bring your lunch if you like. • Contact Kathi Coleman Wilson with questions [email protected] 818 422-8798

Craig Coleman and Kathy Coleman Wilson with Big Top Quilt

Hester Bell is putting out a personal call for chicken-themed quilts that she would like to hang outside on her chicken coops (they won’t get dirty). Please contact her at [email protected] or see her at the General Meetings.

Block of the Month Success

The past three months worth of stars has inspired many members to complete their blocks and bring them to the general meetings for Show and Tell.

The star patterns are available on the Guild’s website and you can pick up the month’s patterns from Kathy Fogel or Leanne Compean at the general meetings. The last star will be finished in October and you can use November’s workshop to design a fitting and exciting border.

Please see page 7 for this month’s star pattern.

II. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as printed in the Newsletter. III. BOARD REPORTS Vice President/Spinn: April 14 is Meet the Teachers at SCCQG. See Tim to sign up for lunch and to let him know if you wish to car pool. Tim will continue to collect blocks and pass them on for use for quilts for victims of the Ventura fires. Treasurer/Fogel: The February Treasurer’s report was presented. Our insurance was paid the normal amount after complaints about the agent who messed up our address which resulted in a late notice. All is now okay and we will consider changing the agent representing our Guild. Communications Secretary/No report, not present. Check with Colleen if not receiving email blast. Beth Hasenauer is the Facebook person, Susan Edwards does Bookwhen for classes and Kathi Wilson does Bookwhen for the October event. Monica Carillo is volunteering to work on an Instagram account for the Guild, which can be attached to the Guild’s Facebook page. Parliamentarian/Compean: Four people will handle workshops and programs, where we now have three. Raza Read will be the 2019 Fundraising Chair. Two people will handle Loving Hands. Most positions have candidates. Programs/Abrams & Burgess: Program with Joe Cunningham is set. The rest is okay. Currently there are no people to help with the June potluck, will put out a notice in the newsletter and general meeting. We could have and ice cream social instead. It is okay to have food at the Goodwill Center after 5 p.m. Need to know a number for the June workshop because the quilts will be pre-packaged for the vet quilts. Workshops/Edwards: So far nine people signed up for both days of Joe Cunningham’s workshops. Six people for Schmidt, seven each for the walking foot and June vets. Membership/Golditch & Millman: The remaining rosters were mailed at 70 cents each. A list of 19 new members was passed out. The schedule for joining the guild has been pushed back. The new member luncheon event will be May 5th, at noon at WAC. Question raised on publishing how many attend versus how many total members. It was suggested to separate membership into categories of active, honorary and out-of-towners. Attendance will still be printed but counted against active members. Spinn will update membership forms and change the wording for Opportunity Quilt 2018-2019. Newsletter/Miyahara: There was a double margin on the printed newsletter. Elke will try to get it eliminated on the next run. It not, then will try Staples for printing. Fund Raising 2018/Shier: So far the Opportunity Quilt has raised $2,762. March 18 is the Wisteria Festival in Sierra Madre. Wednesday, March 14 is a work party at WAC during the daytime. Information will go to the hostesses and the folder is ready to print. Loving Hands/Curran: We received a thank you letter from the Southern California Alcohol and Drug Program, Angel Step Inn for the 40 quilts we donated to them. 100 tops went to the Ventura Quilt Guild. 30-35 people came by for the Camper Quilt event, 720 blocks were pieced for 20 quilts and 9 tops were done. Still have 1/3 of the blocks left. Fifteen 3-yard cuts were donated by Candy’s. Three rolls of batting were bought from Jo-ann’s. LH will raffle off fat quarters to raise money for more batting. Friday the 16th is the next LH meeting and sewing session. March’s raffle basket money will go to LH. Audit/Fogel: The Audit Committee consisting of Raza Read, Mary Jamora and Kathy Euler met last Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and reviewed our past year’s expenditures. Block of the Month/Fogel & Compean: Blocks are chosen through September. Samples are completed through April. Donation Committee/Shier: Committee consists of Colleen, Sharon Bishop, An Burgess and Tina Curran. Items are screened according to a list: Loving Hands, Fundraising and sales, and donation. A crafts center in Pasadena takes all kinds of items. It was recommended to give there first before donating things to Goodwill. IV. UNIFNISHED BUSINESS 501c(3): The forms are nearly ready for submission and questions are ready to be addressed by an attorney. 2019 Opportunity Quilt: Since Raza Read is the 2019 Fundraising Chair, Colleen will talk to her about the quilt designs/ideas. NEW BUSINESS Library: Motion made to liquidate our library of 314 books, put all books up for sale at the June meeting to guild members and donate non-sold books to Goodwill. Our library has sat in storage for the past 2 ½ years and a rolling cart at WAC is a no go. Procedure Books: Update them for the incoming officers and be ready to review next year’s budget items. indicate that on the list at the Membership Table. • The Workshop brochure is online. • Be sure to get your tickets for the Opportunity Basket. • After considering a report from SCCQG on what various guilds are doing regarding their libraries, along with

the fact that we have not used our Library for several years, the Board has decided to disband our Library. We will begin selling the books at the June meeting. Guild Libraries just don’t seem to be utilized these days due to the ease of finding information on the internet and the difficulty of transporting books to meetings.

IV. BOARD REPORTS Parliamentarian/Compean: The Nominating Committee was successful in recruiting nominees for the next year and the proposed slate of officers will be presented at the next General Membership Meeting. Vice President/Spinn: The next SCCQG meeting is Meet the Teachers in April. Anyone interested in carpooling, contact Tim. We are still gathering blocks, tops and completed quilts for the victims of the Thomas Fire. Tim mentioned a Quilt Retreat up the Angeles Crest next month. There is still room and it is lots of fun. Contact Tim for details. Treasurer/Fogel: The February Treasurer’s Report was presented. Sunshine and Shadows/Meier: Mernie’s sister is recovering nicely from her surgery. Beth Hasenauer had surgery on her broken foot and is mobile with the aid of the kneeling scooter. Cindy Abrams is thrilled that she is half way through her 6 weeks in a cast for her broken radius. Newsletter/Miyahara: The Newsletter deadline is March 20 the Tuesday after the General Membership meeting. Future work parties for the Under the Big Top event are scheduled for May 2 and May 24 from 9 to 3 at WAC. Event tickets are $35, which includes lunch. Tickets are limited so members are encouraged to purchase their tickets soon. Quilts are needed for display and for sale. If you wish to donate a quilt to sell, please fill out the form. You can indicate a minimum price and whether to return the quilt to you if it is not sold. Elke encouraged members to participate in the challenge by selecting their piece of dot fabric and rick rack to be used in the quilt construction. The challenge quilts will be due October 10. Pat Golditch is in charge of the Dessert and Fruit Bar and is looking for members to donate home-made dessert items. The next organizational meeting is scheduled for April 10 at noon at WAC Fund Raising 2019/Shier: Colleen introduced Rasa Read who has agreed to chair the 2019 Fund Raising and has been appointed to fill the vacant position. Workshops/Edwards: Samples of work from previous Linda Schmidt workshops were passed around. Loving Hands/Curran: Thirty-five quilts were turned in. At Road2CA we donated 19 quilts to the Ventura Modern Quilt Guild for victims of the Thomas Fire and we also donated 100 quilt tops to them at Quilt Con. And the class was very relaxing.” “ A really enjoyable sew and sing day!” “Joe provided a perfect atmosphere for creating a unique design. His instructions were clear and easy to follow.
