men
With the objective of
analyzing new forms of
crime against women in
Latin America and the
Caribbean (LAC), and
the responses to these
crimes from the judici-
ary system, a training
titled “New forms of
Crime Against Women”
was held in Panama City from Apirl 24th to the 26
th. This train-
ing was developed, with the support of UN Women, as part of
Secretary-General`s (SG) campaign, “Unite to End Violence
Against Women.”
According to Nadine Gasman, Senior Manager for the SG
Campaign in LAC, “In Latin America and The Caribbean laws
against violence against women exist, but the issue is in their
implementation.”
“Ending impunity requires implementing the laws we have in
place. To ensure these laws are working to protect our women
we must demand results from the judicial system and justice
workers”, says Mrs. Gasman.

UN Women welcomes the adoption of legal re-
forms to criminalize feminicide in Mexico
In Mexico the Congress of the Union of the Decree approved
an amendment and supplemented various provisions of the
Federal Criminal Code including the General Law of Access for
Women to a Life Free of Violence, the Organic Law of Federal
Public Administration and the Organic Law of the Republic’s
General Procuratory. These amendments were in response to
Mexico`s ratification of international commitments to human
rights issues. These reforms represent a step forward in
strengthening the Mexico`s Judicial System and women`s ac-
cess to a life free of violence.
The Mexican UN Women representative, Ana Güezmes,
stated that “The federal classification of Feminicide was in re-
sponse to the Observations made to Mexico in 2010 by the
UN’s Human Rights Committee.”

Goodbye to Masud Sadiki Donovan, a colleague in the fight to eradicate violence against women
Since 2010, UN Women has had the honor and pleasure of being associated with the artist, Masud Sadiki Donovan, when he readily agreed to join the Car-
ibbean movement “Artists UNiTE” in support of the UN Secretary-General`s Campaign “UNiTE to End Violence
Against Women”. In this role, Masud generously contributed a song to the Campaign, “Stitch in Time”, the first
artist globally to do so. He performed this song at a peace concert in Palestine.
In our association with Masud, we were all struck by his generous spirit, his sincere interest in people and his
commitment to making a positive contribution to his country and region through his music. The Caribbean artists
with whom he worked and developed friendships with thought of Masud as a positive force for good. He was also
an extremely likeable and decent people, ready and happy to contribute, his experiences, thoughts, time, and
sweet musicality to the goal of equality, peace, and harmony between women and men.
