President’s MessageGood Morning Ladies,

What a year this has been trying to stay healthy and safe from Covid. It has been quite a challenge but, so far, our Club has managed to continue with a few projects.

We have continued to help the community in smaller ways. In the fall, and again in January, we sent notecards to the residents of the Belknap County Nursing Home, with a note in each one, to remind them that Altrusa is still thinking of them and hoping to brighten their day. We waited until after the holidays to send them notecards to help them get through the winter blues and to remind them Altrusa is thinking of them. We will continue this project until we are able to visit the Nursing Home. Barbara D., Barbara L. and Sue are checking on our little free library in Vista and restocking it as needed.

Our Governor, Linda Ring, is keeping us informed with her President’s monthly zoom meetings. District Committee Members are also holding monthly meetings.  The last one was about the newsletter and In February Rita Cote is presenting a training session. This session will be sharing ideas that have worked during Covid for other clubs and fundraising ideas. All members are invited to join these meetings.

The District conference will be held April 23 and 24 and it will be a zoom conference.  More details will follow soon. The District Board has worked very hard on this Virtual Conference and I hope that many of you will consider attending.

I can’t wait for spring and some milder weather and with any luck we may all have gotten the vaccine and we will be able to meet outdoors.

Stay well,Carla

LITERACY COMMITTEE

We continue to stock our Little Free Library with books for all ages.Recently, the Downtown Gym in Laconia has donated books to us,thanks to an Altrusa member!  We have found this project to be very positive, getting reading material into the hands of many.

Another free book giveaway is planned for the spring.  We hopeto use a different laundromat than the one we did for fall.  Booksfor children who accompany adults will be the focus.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE

Our February 9th meeting will feature guest speaker Brandon Caron of Spectacle Management. This is the company that is working on the Colonial Theatre in downtown Laconia.

Other ideas for speakers in the coming months are The Chamber of Commerce, The Belknap Mill and the Historical Society.

BELKNAP COUNTY NURSING HOME

Each month birthday cards for residents with birthdays that month are dropped off.  While we cannot host monthly birthdays parties for a while, we hope this keeps us in the minds of residents.

Recently, we created 70 cards for all residents of the Nursing Home. These had a Happy New Year message, encouraging the residents to stay positive and safe.  Each resident had his/her name on the card. We do hope to see them soon-- when the Nursing Home feels it can return to allowing us to visit.

DID YOU KNOW…..Anna Mary Robinson (Grandma Moses), a renowned American Artist, was presented with an honorary membership by the Altrusa Club of Troy, New York, in 1949.

MEMBERSHIP

Dr. Lisa Singh has decided to re-join our club! Those who remember Lisa know she was a valuable member of Altrusa. She left when she had her two adorable daughters. The kids are getting older and Lisa is ready to join us again! What great news!

“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.”

― Barack Obama

DISTRICT ONE

From Linda Ring

April 2021 Conference will be VIRTUAL!

The District One Board met briefly on December 29th to review the results of the ‘Conference Attendance’ poll that was conducted. Due to very small numbers of members who will attend, and delays in disseminating the COVID vaccine, the District Board voted to change our 2021 Conference to a Virtual one, and cancel the hotel contract as planned. The Board and Committee Chairs will meet on January 16th to discuss all aspects of the formerly planned conference, and how to re-format moving forward. We are considering the business that needs to be addressed, as well as your personal comfort, time spent in front of the computer screen, and our ability to somehow ‘get us all together’ in some fashion. Stay tuned for updates!
