Give Opinions & Share your Views Come along to an IDEAS FORUM Thurs 23rd October General Purposes Room, St Andrew’s School at 7.30pm. Meet others and enjoy refreshments. Please help shape the future for our parish From the Rector Each Christian tradition, while remaining true to the Christian Faith as expressed by the Creeds, will have its own insights which express the nature and experience which has moulded it. It is very important that we understand and cherish that experience so that we understand what we do as Christians in our tradition and why we do what we do in worship, and how we can best understand the teaching of the Bible During October (8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th) I will be arranging a series of four evenings on Wednesday evenings in the Chapel at 8pm, about the 'Church of Ireland and its traditions', followed by a second series of four evenings in Feb/March. The topics for the first series will be the claims of the Nicene Creed about the Church as 'One', 'Holy' 'Catholic' and 'Apostolic', words we often gloss over but do not think about seriously. Each evening will consist of a short talk, with plenty of time for discussion and elucidation, and refreshments. The second series will look at the 'Lambeth Quadrilateral' of 1888, a document which is now the accepted statement describing Anglicanism although not as widely known as it should be: It takes its name from the Lambeth Conferences and the stability of the four 'legs' of Anglican thinking, Scriptures, Creeds, Sacraments, Episcopate or, if you like, Bible, Beliefs, Worship and Authority. Dates will be announced later. I hope that many of you will be inquisitive enough about what our Church of Ireland stands for to come along and find out more! Parish RegistersHoly Baptism20th June, in St Andrew's (by Ven. Helene Tarneberg Steed, Archdeacon of Clogher), David Alan Billy, son of Jeff and Annie Dunne, 8 Blackwood Lawn. Dublin 15

20th July, in St Andrew's, Alva May Bergdahl and Nancy Elizabeth Bergdahl, twin daughters of Staffan Bergdahl and Deirdre Coleman, 5 Grove Avenue

Holy Matrimony11th July 2014 in St Andrew's, Ciaran Gillen and Amy Diana Hall, both of 5 Parnell Cottages, Malahide.

We wish Ciaran and Amy many happy years of married life together. It was in many ways a local event: Ciaran and Amy both grew up in Malahide and the Hall family have a long and active involvement with parish life and specially with the school where Amy has been a valued member of staff for many years and her mother, Susie, is Deputy Chairperson of the Board of Management as well as being one of our Diocesan Synodspersons.

SympathyWe offer our sympathy to Beverlie O'Flaherty, Gartan on the recent death of her father, and to Adele Notley, Lissadell, whose mother has also died in recent weeks.

Congratulationsto Isobel Morris who won a silver medal at Bloom.

Racial Justice SundayThis takes place on Sunday 14th September, and the preacher at the morning services is Rev Kevin Ronne, Rector of Dunleckney (Bagenalstown, Co Carlow). Kevin is South African and grew up in a white family which was declared to be 'mixed race' at the height of apartheid, which naturally gave him a deepand personal interest in the subject of racial justice! The servicein St Andrew's will be an 'All Age' service.

Malahide HarvestThis will be celebrated on Sunday 28th September when the visiting preacher at the All Age Service at 11.30am will be Rev Norman McCausland, Rector of Raheny and Coolock. It will be Norman's first time to be in St Andrew's and I know he will receive a warm welcome.

On Friday evening at 7pm, there will be a Harvest Supper. It is the first time the Fund-raising Committee has done this, and a great deal of work has gone into the evening and we ask for everyone's support. While we are looking for €10 per adult, children go free as we want to make it a family occasion, socially enjoyable with good food and some entertainment afterwards!

Christmas MarketIt's been a bumper year for fruit. Are your freezers full of fruit which can be made into jam? Jam it for the parish! Bake it for the parish. A well stocked deli and cake stall filled with luscious goodies not only brings in funds at the Christmas Market in its own right: it puts everyone into a good and generous mood to spend on the other stalls as well!

The Market is on November 29th, and tickets for the associatedRaffle will be distributed in advance of the big day as well as

being for sale on the day of the Market itself.

At present, the Parish needs all the money we can raise to balance our books at the end of the year and the Christmas Market is an essential part of our funding. Please sell your allocation of tickets to people outside the parish as well as inside – your friends and neighbours and family elsewhere who might not otherwise give us anything!

There will be an ample supply of additional tickets available from Anne Taplin in the Office.

Parish Presentation to Trevor RichmondAs we will all be aware, Trevor Richmond has just retired after 42 years' service as Principal of St Andrew's School. It is a truly remarkable achievement and he is, we understand, the longest serving Primary School Principal in the State. During those years, he had developed the school in every way to what it is today, with nearly 240 pupils and modern and spacious surroundings.

The parents, families and past pupils will be marking Trevor's retirement with a special function in October, but there will be an opportunity for the parish as a whole, and not just those associated with the school, to gather and thank Trevor for what he has achieved. There will be a special Service of Thanksgiving in celebration of Trevor's ministry in school and parish in St Andrew's on Sunday 28th September at 6.30pm, after which we will adjourn to the Parish Centre for refreshments and a presentation. We invite all parishioners whowould wish to be associated with the presentation to send their donations to Anne Taplin in the Parish Office by Wednesday 24th all envelopes to be marked 'Trevor Richmond Presentation'.

St Doulagh's HarvestThis will be held on Sunday October 12th. The preacher at the morning service will be Very Rev Raymond Ferguson, recently retired as Dean of Kilmore and a primary teacher by profession, and in the evening Rev Asa Bjork Olafsdottir, Rector of Dun Laoghaire. Asa hails from Iceland but has ministered in Ireland for a number of years, in Kells Co Meath and more recently in Dun Laoghaire.

As part of the Harvest celebrations, The Friends of St. Doulagh's are holding a Festival of Flowers from the 11th - 13thOctober. All profits will be used for the restoration of St Doulagh's.

St Doulagh's DayThis year marks a very special anniversary for our parish as it marks the 150th anniversary of the rebuilding of St Doulagh's inits present form in 1862-4. The architect was Sir Charles Lanyon, who designed a number of churches in Ireland and also Queen's College Belfast and was the leading architect working in Ireland at the time. The Perpetual Curate was Rev Geoffrey Studdert-Kennedy who subsequently had a distinguished career in Worcester and whose son was the Rev Geoffrey Studdert-Kennedy, a World War I chaplain known as 'Woodbine Willie'. His grandson, Rev Andrew Studdert-Kennedy is Rector of Marlborough and will be the preacher at the anniversary service which will be held at 7.00 pm on Sunday 16th November, the Vigil of St Doulagh's Day.

St Andrew's SchoolThe beginning of September marks the official retirement of our

Principal, Trevor Richmond after 42 years at the helm. We wish his successor, Lesley McElhinney, who has been Acting Principal since last November, a long and successful Principalship. Trevor's long and successful tenure will be marked by two events: one for families attached to the school and past pupils and staff in the Portmarnock Golf Links Hotel onFriday 17th October (Details from School 8450185), and a reception to enable the wider parish community to express theirthanks to Trevor for all he has achieved for school and parish over four decades and more, which will be held in St Andrew's Church and Parish Centre on Sunday 28th September at 6.30pm. (Details Parish Office)

Thanksto Norma Williams who organised a 'party' in her house in Portmarnock for the friends and congregation of St Doulagh's which was a great social occasion. It marked the beginning of our celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the great rebuilding of the Church in its present form, with the nave and chancel which in their architectural style so wonderfully reflect the original Celtic stonework.

St Andrew's ChurchyardThe Select Vestry is very concerned about the amount of dead plants that have been left on some of the graves, especially in the columbarium area. Following the July meeting, the gardenerhas been instructed to remove all dead plants from the churchyard and dispose of them.

We have always been proud of the neat appearance of the churchyard which has been the subject of much favourable comment from visitors and from parishioners.

Also with the aim of ensuring the continued neat appearance of the Churchyard, the Select Vestry is currently undertaking a comprehensive review of charges and conditions for burials andmemorials.

Church RepairsSome parishioners may have noticed builders' vans outside St Andrew's church. Some problems were noted in plasterwork on the main arch and were dealt with as a matter of urgency. We thank the glebewardens for their quick action and our contractorfor the neat manner in which the area concerned was dealt withbetween a Sunday night and Thursday afternoon. Fortunately, there were no funerals that week! Thankfully, the problem was not as serious as feared, and was caused by some gradual loosening of Victorian plaster which was not up to the standard of the rest of the 1870 plasterwork rather than a problem with damp or the roof. All is now well!

Ideas ForumYou are cordially invited to attend an IDEAS FORUM,at 7.30pmon Thursday 23rd October in the GP room in the school.

The forum is an opportunity for you to come together with members of the parish to air your views, to give your opinions, to ask questions, to listen. Have you any issues you would like to bring up ? Have you any ideas you would like to see developed? Then come along and participate in discussions in small groups which will result in recommendations that can be considered by the Parish. The meeting will be led a trained facilitator, Anne Winslow O'Dea.

needs of people living in our parish and towards putting in placea more substantive participatory process and improving communications. Please come along.

The Wider ChurchIt is important that we remember that the Church is wider than the congregation! We can become aware of the scale of Anglican diversity by seeking to explore and inform ourselves ofwhat is going on on a wider sphere. The Church of Ireland Gazette keeps us informed of events in the Church of Ireland, the Anglican Communion and is published weekly. Subscriptiondetails from Fiona Gavin. The Church Review tells us what is going on in the Diocese, appears monthly and may be ordered from Anne Taplin. We also suggest you might subscribe to the Anglican News Service (www.anglicannews.org) which providesa weekly free bulletin of press releases and commentary on contemporary events relating to Anglicanism and the wider Church, straight to your computer! Select Vestry NewsOn Monday, 14th of July the new members of the Select Vestry gathered for their third official meeting this year. There is always so much going on in people’s lives and we sometimes arrive with busy and anxious thoughts. By starting with prayer, we calm our hearts, reflect and begin the meeting.

Last month, we mentioned the purpose of the Select Vestry- to manage the tasks, discover who is best suited fordifferent roles and work together for the better of the parish and community. We opened with discussions on finances. The Parish Barbecue on the 22nd June was a great success and has been a highlight of the summer for fellowship as well as fundraising. A total of €1,000 was raised. Thank you for your generosity. There was a great atmosphere in the Parish Centre hall (Ian Watkins put in tremendous work organising the food and drinks) as we gathered to share delicious food prepared by many and in particular the food cooked by David and Julia (who so generously gave of their time). The sun shone strongly on the back lawn as we sat together inside and outside to eat and have great conversations with old friends and new. It is on days such as this that we can really see the blessings of shared work and the rewards of being part of this community. Thank you to the team who prepared dishes, cooked, served the food, cleared up and shared in the fun. There will be other events in the coming months including aHarvest Supper, a wine-tasting evening and other events.

Gathering together was a particular point of discussion as we formulated a plan for the Parish Ideas Forum. At the Easter Vestry earlier this year, people expressed a desire for more opportunities to get together with others. A public forum such as is proposed, is a space where we will get together to listen, discuss, innovate, get creative and learn what is important for us, for others and for the parish.

Have you any ideas you’d like to share? What are the three most important issues for you in the Parish? Have a chat with your friends and other parishioners about the Ideas Forum on the 23rd October so by the time the evening happens, we’ll be bursting with fabulous ideas and action plans! Please, mark it in your diaries and come along.

Sometimes we lose sight of the gifts we have, particularly as the demands of life overwhelm our natural state of happiness and peace. Have you forgotten to nourish your unique talents or to allow your abilities flourish? One passage that comes to mind is from Matthew 5: 14:

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Other points of discussion included the participation of young people in the parish, the formula of worship such as the toddler service and the Sunday services. We discussed cleaning the graveyard to remove flowers that had decayed.

Engaging with other traditions will also be highlighted duringthe Harvest season as we gather to give thanks for our gifts, to share them with those who don’t have enough and to remember how some of us are left without the basic love, care and kindness of others.

You are an important part of this Parish with a unique perspective and life experience. Thank you for your contribution- for coming along to Church, doing a reading orprayer, the collection, playing the organ, singing in the choir, sharing a giggle in the pews, being part of one of the groups, visiting your neighbour or cheerfully greeting another. Life is richer when we share our personal gifts; thank you one and all for your unique contribution.

With every blessing for your good health & a joyful month, Emma

Emma Rogan

YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PARISHI have just taken over as Parish Recorder and I thought it might be useful to explain to parishioners what my role is.

The Recorder looks after the records for the Direct Giving Schemes. These schemes are the weekly envelopes you put onthe plate; and the bank Standing Order scheme and annual donation by cheque. I keep a record of each parishioner’s contributions so that the annual total can be ascertained. Theserecords are completely separate from all other Parish records inorder to maintain the confidentiality of individual contributions. The Recorder is the only person who knows what each parishioner contributes. You can identify your annual contribution in the anonymised list that I publish each year, but nobody else will know from that list how much another person gave. This is achieved by allocating a unique confidential number to each parishioner in the envelope scheme. This number is known only to the Recorder and the individual parishioner. In the case of the Standing Order Scheme, I have aseparate bank account, the details of which are known only to me. Again, you can check that your annual contribution has been correctly accounted for by inspecting the anonymised list of donations. Some parishioners are in one scheme or the otherand some are in both and there are some who are in neither. Allwho contribute have a confidential number.

If you are not in one of the schemes, would you like to consider now supporting your parish in this way, preferably by Standing Order? Let me assure you of the strict accountability and confidentiality that would surround your contributions. Whether you are in a scheme or not and would like to contact me with any queries, please don’t hesitate to give me a call.

TAX BACKSome parishioners can contribute €250 or more in a tax year. If they complete a CHY 3 or 4 form, the Parish is able to claim a refund of Income Tax on their donations at the rate of 30%. From 2013 onwards, the repayment scheme was altered so thatboth PAYE tax payers and self-employed persons are treated inthe same way. The donation is considered to be made net of anIncome Tax deduction of 30%. Thus, a contribution of €250 is considered to be a gross gift of €357 from the giver and the Parish can claim a tax refund of €107.

If you have been able to contribute over €250, I would urge you to complete the CHY form that I will send to you in the next few weeks for 2013; and then to return it to me for processing.

If you have any questions at all, you can reach me at:Robert Barker BA, MA, FCCA, ATIIKaribu Sana, Broomfield, Malahide.
