Volume 19 - No. 7 February 2013
Principal’s Message Welcome to the second half of the year. Our first semester wrapped with exams and final assessments and semester two started smoothly on January 31. Results from the Ministry Exams in Grades 10, 11 and 12, will be accessible to students on the web at www.bced.gov.ca/exams beginning March 4. Students will need to log on using their PEN number to access their exam scores.
Report cards for the first semester were distributed to students on February 7. If you have not seen your son’s or daughter’s report card, feel free to call the office. Our students have displayed a high level of achievement and their successes are reflected in the Honor Roll for Semester 1 with nearly 62% (802 students) qualifying for the Honor Roll achieving 73% (B) or better. I would like to acknowledge the 172 students who achieved a 4.00 GPA, the 320 students who qualified for First Class Honors and the 310 students who qualified for Honors. All are very impressive statistics, especially considering how busy our students are and the diverse skills, knowledge and work required to achieve this status.
Grade 12 students are busy making their plans for post-graduation. Many are applying to universities, colleges and other programs. Please contact our counseling department and careers department to seek further information about options and particular programs.
Course Selection for the 2013–14 school year is almost complete and I remind you that every year of secondary school brings different options and opportunities for students. Please ask to see the course planning information and discuss course choices at home if you have not already done so. It is important that students choose courses wisely with an eye towards senior secondary possibilities, graduation requirements, post-secondary and career interests. Counselors are always willing to discuss these with parents – over the phone or in person.
It has been a busy start to 2013 with a multitude of activities, performances and events at Elgin Park Secondary:
We were treated to fantastic sold out performances of “Grease: the Musical” by Mr. Engstrom and his incredibly talented cast, and Elgin Park’s musicians led by Mr. Henderson. Literally 1000’s of hours of volunteer work were invested from creating the set and stage to casting, rehearsals, costumes etc. and every aspect of this production was outstanding. Bravo to Mr. Engstrom for his dedication to the arts in our school and to the entire cast, crew and numerous supporting players, including community and parent volunteers who so generously gave both time and resources to pull this major production off. Special mention to the following individuals who assisted in making this production such a success:
* Mr. Don Wilk - choral director * Ms. Carol Seitz - choreographer * Ms. Tracey Tichelman - costume designs * Mr. Al Henderson - band director * Mr. Jeff Stasiuk (Laird Plastics) - set design

Our Jr. Girls Basketball qualified for BC provincial tournament to be held in Langley (March 6-9). They finished the season undefeated in regulation games, and placed third in Fraser Valleys by defeating our friendly cross-town rivals at Earl Marriott. Special recognition goes to Claire Eccles, who was named a first team all-star.
We are building momentum with our basketball program as our Grade 8 Girls Basketball Team also had a fantastic season placing fourth in Fraser Valleys and qualifying for the BC invitational tournament. Danielle Steer was awarded All-Star of the tournament. Congratulations to all and our thanks to the coaches who give their time and passion to these important extracurricular activities.
Congratulations to Nancy Zhang who won gold at the BC Provincial Synchronized Swimming Championships and qualified for the nationals in Calgary.
Our PAC has been busy in February; parents Claire Langley and
Michelle Price attended the Community Engagement Forum at Panorama Ridge on February 18. This activity was an opportunity for the Board of Trustees to liaise with parents regarding: Budgeting and changes to how education will be delivered Increased flexibility to support learning What things does your child need to feel supported and successful in school? What things does the school need to continue to support your child and to connect with parents and the community?
Finally, thank you to all the parents, teachers and community who support our students in a variety of ways, your commitment to the students of Elgin Park Secondary is greatly appreciated and builds a stronger school community. I am always happy to hear from you and welcome your feedback.

Band News
It has been a busy month for the bands. February 8-9 was the Envision Jazz Festival and all the Elgin Park Jazz Bands along with several trios and quartets played. Their performances were excellent! A group of the band students, along with Mr. Henderson conducting and Mr. Leeder on guitar, provided the music for “Grease.” The production was fantastic and the music was great. There are two concerts coming up: March 7 will see all the Concert Bands playing as part of Fine Arts Night at the school and on May 16, the final Jazz Night of the year will take place. Mark the dates and plan to come out for evenings of really good music! The end of the year BBQ and Band Concert will take place in June - stay tuned for more details. And finally, if you are looking for a way to meet people, have fun, contribute to the school and most of all, support the students who are part of the Band Program, think about joining the Band Parents Committee next year. There are some rare openings for new volunteers on the Committee - no experience required and it only takes a few hours during the year to make a huge difference. Where else can you get that kind of return on your investment?
Please contact the Band Parents Committee at [email protected].

UN VOYAGE SUPERCHOUETTE! From speed tobogganing, to snowshoeing, to dogsledding, to extreme tubing, and to spoon playing, this year’s group of juniors had a fantastic time in Quebec City!!
Although the temperatures were very cold, our students had a blast exploring and living the Quebecois winter culture. The Ice Palace was a definite highlight as was the Valcartier Sports Village.
If you did not get to go this year, please consider the trip next year.

SPANISH SPEAKING TRAVEL DESTINATIONS IN LATIN AMERICA

Nicknamed ‘the Tibet of Latin America’, land-locked Bolivia is one of the continent’s
most isolated countries. With stunning scenery nestled amidst the high altitude of
Bolivia’s mountains, the country offers stunning scenery unlike anywhere else on the
planet.
Cuba
American sanctions have created something of a time-warp in Cuba, with 1960s
automobiles still riding the roads and ATMs being non-existent. Nevertheless, the
largest Caribbean island is unique and has plenty to offer, from beautiful beaches to
Havana’s famously fabulous nightlife.
Venezuela
With the longest Caribbean Sea coastline of any nation, Venezuela‘s beaches are
plentiful and spectacular. Further inland, visitors can discover the juxtaposition of well-
preserved colonial architecture and gleaming modern structures in Venezuela’s city
centers, as well as a large swathe of Amazonian rainforest and Angel Falls, which is the
world’s tallest waterfall.

Dieter Stamm, Coach and Director
We had a VERY successful Parent Social at Sawbucks Pub on Saturday night! Thank you to Rhonda Hanna and her team for their organizing and for all their hard work. A big thank you to all the parents who participated by either donating silent auction items, gave cash donations, got items for the silent auction from businesses and to those who came out to enjoy the night. The silent auction, 50/50, unlock the i-pad, and the lottery hat were so enthusiastically supported, that we are very happy to report approximately $7,000 was raised! Fantastic!! Thanks to the generosity and support of our parents and peninsula community, we are pleased to say that the Dry Grad ticket price will remain the same as last year’s at $65.00. This is good news, as other years Dry Grad tickets have been priced as high as $90. Dry Grad tickets will go on sale May 7, at the same time as the Dinner/Dance tickets. We will continue fundraising to provide refreshments, entertainment and prizes etc. for the Dry Grad event. Congratulations to the bake sale crew: February’s Valentine sale netted $250.00!! The next bake sale is March 14 and all items are $1.00. Thank you Ingrid Harrison for heading up the very popular bake sales. Panago Fundraiser - we have $10 certificates for any medium pizza from Panago for sale; $4 from each certificate sold will go to our Dry Grad. If you wish to purchase Panago certificates please e-mail Colleen at [email protected], or have your child see one of the Student Council members. We are still in need of parent volunteers for the night of Dry Grad for set-up, bus supervisors, working at the casino, and help with tear down. If you have not yet submitted your name but would like to volunteer please contact either Denise or Colleen. We are also looking for a parent who is an electrician to work alongside the Entertainment staff and Zack Dallas, to help run the electrical side of things. You would only be required to help out during the day of set-up. Coming on May 4 is the Car Wash/Bottle Drive, Audi test drive, and another Panago fundraiser. Student and parent volunteers will be needed. More information to come as we get closer to the date. Thank you again to Steve and Lee Evans for taking on this fundraiser. Thank you to all for your continued support! Co-Chairs, Dry Grad 2013 Denise Wootton - [email protected] 604-538-9389 Colleen Bloudell - [email protected] 604-536-8631

PAC - PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE
PAC Meeting –February 20, 2013
Meeting attended by school parents, LST Teacher Yolanda Duncan, Vice Principal Kirsten Farquhar & Principal, Mr. Filsinger Opening/Welcome Claire Langley welcomed parents, staff & Mr. Filsinger to the meeting. 1. Motion to Approve Minutes The minutes of PAC Meeting held January 23, 2012 were APPROVED. Motioned: Trenor Tilley Seconded: Moira McVey 2. Smart Study Skills Presentation
Claire introduced LST Teacher, Yolanda Duncan who gave a presentation regarding homework & study skills. She emphasized the importance of establishing routine with regards to homework & setting up an appropriate area to work in. She provided a handout from the National Association of School Psychologists which you can find at: www.nasponline.org/resources/home_school/homework.aspx Additionally she provided a couple of links for homework help: www.ilc.org/aat/tools.php and www.khanacademy.org/
3. Update on Surrey Schools Forum
Vice Principal Kristin Farquhar provided a short summary of the Surrey School Board Community Forum, which was held on Feb. 18, 2013. Each school was asked to send an administrator plus 2 parents to participate. The Forum touched on things such as the future forecast for budgeting and changes to how education will be delivered. Increased flexibility to support learning with ideas such as yearlong courses students could take if necessary for better understanding, (math for example). Promoting students ability to collaborate and trade education opportunities. Results of these forums will be shared publicly when complete. Questions were asked regarding the school calendar for Spring Break 2014 & the possible change to the current school year model.
Ms. Farquhar responded that the length of Spring Break is a decision that must be looked at annually but that overall parents like the 2-week break. Regarding changes to the school year the Board did not pose this question at the forum. Mr. Filsinger added that in the event the Surrey School Board adopted the year-round system it would mean more breaks of shorter duration.
4. DPAC Meeting Update
Claire presented an update on DPAC as provided by Lori Bogert who was unable to attend today’s meeting. Almost the entire meeting was dedicated to information on Bullying. The Province of B.C. & City of Surrey are working
hard to try to educate & support youth, parents & teachers on this issue. Theresa Campbell, Manger of the ‘Safe Schools Program’ in the Surrey School District was the keynote speaker & will be offering lots more information at the next meeting on Feb. 27th for DPAC’s two part series on Bullying. Anyone interested in this topic is welcome to attend.
Highly recommended viewing is a video created by the Canadian Red Cross titled, ‘How to Help: A Youth Perspective on Bullying’. You can find this 20-min video on the Canadian Red Cross Website or on YouTube.

PAC - PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE 5. Presentation on Social Media
Tracy Tichelman gave a short presentation on four of the most popular forms of Social Media that our children are using including Instagram, SnapChat, Facebook & Twitter. Of particular note she stressed that despite the premise of photos disappearing off of Snapchat everyone should be aware that photos are not dropped off the server as quickly and/or efficiently as described & that screen shots can indeed be taken.
Another parent warned that GPS coordinates are attached to photos & the whereabouts of our children could easily be tracked via social media. Stephanie Mohr mentioned there is now another media device to be aware of which uses 36-second video clips.
6. Principal’s Report
Mr. Filsinger shared with the PAC that course selection is happening for all current students & will begin next month for incoming Grade 7’s. Not much change is expected from last year but they are looking at putting a yearlong math program into the timetable for students having more difficulty.
Grease is on and the musical has sold close to 2000 tickets; almost a complete sell out. Students & staff have done a
tremendous job with the production as well as generous donations of the backdrop, time & expertise from parents.
Interim Report Cards will be issued March 7th. Email & phone message alerts will be going out to parents. Spring Concert evening on Thursday March 7th. Recently an email was received from a parent concerned about the possibility the prescription drug, Ritalin, was being sold
to students. (Students look for this drug as a stimulant for the purpose of studying.) Mr. Filsinger said that he was not aware that this was a problem at Elgin but asked that parents let him know if they have information otherwise.
7. Elgin Park 20
th Anniversary
English teacher, Carolyn Peterson made a presentation to the PAC with regards to Elgin Park’s upcoming 20th Anniversary.
She has been at the school since it opened in 1993 and would like the PAC’s help in organizing an event. The goal is to bring staff & community together & the anniversary event would be discussed at the next staff meeting.
She envisioned having an Open House celebration during the day followed by a time for former students to meet organized
by grad year and ending with a wine/cheese party. The PAC’s help was requested to operate getting the license for the wine/cheese and Claire offered to organize a committee to assist, which would need to be in place by April.
Any help people can offer connecting with former students would be appreciated.
Thanksgiving was suggested as a possible date for the event giving extra travel time for attendees, as well as getting the word out via social media; perhaps setting up a Facebook Page.
