ENVIRONMENT

F a u n a p r o t e c t i o n

Velas Vallarta is a leader in sustainable tourism. One of its principles is to take measures to protect local fauna; a clear example is the support that provides to the Mexican Turtle Center and Nayarit’s Environmental Groups B.C. (Campamento Tortuguero "El Naranjo"). The hotel has worked with this association for many years to support the preservation of sea turtles, especially the Olive Ridley turtle, which reaches the beaches of Puerto Vallarta to spawn between the months of June and December.

Velas Vallarta has done an important effort in the care of the eggs and the release of the babies. In recent years they have increased both the number of turtles that have spawned as the number of turtles released after their birth.

In 2011, 64.2% of the eggs hatched with complete success. The latest report (2014) indicates that the amounts have increased, reaching 81.6% of hatchlings and releases (over 19,000 eggs in total); this also means that eggs unattained diminished considerably. Plus, guests are always invited to live the emotional experience of releasing a turtle!

The hotel also is considered a "home" for many other species. Between 100 and 150 koi fish are conserved in different ponds, and guests (especially the little ones) enjoy watching and feed them. Thanks to the lush vegetation that remains on the property, some peacocks and iguanas are also part of the family and they are an attraction for teens and adults. In recent months, the "Pichichín" duck reproduction has been supported and after their birth, they are sent mainly to the golf courses for their growth.

Because of the hotel's environmental commitment, it has won many awards such as the Gold Certification granted by EarthCheck and Distinctive S (Distintivo S), promoted by the Secretariat of Tourism.

CUISINE - RECIPES

Battle of Puebla’s Day is celebrated on May 5th of each year. It is one of the most important dates in the history of Mexico as in 1862, near the city of Puebla, the second intervention of French troops in the country was raised. Both armies fought (the Mexican, under the command of Ignacio Zaragoza and the French one, leaded by Charles Ferdinand Latrille); Mexicans were the absolute winners.

In order to commemorate this important date, Velas Resorts rolls out Cinco de Mayo cocktails for guests staying at its luxury resorts in Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Maya and Riviera Nayarit. Grand Velas Riviera Maya will feature the Ignacio Zaragoza Cocktail, named after the Mexican General who defeated the French in the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. Velas Vallarta will serve the Victoria Tropicale, a fruity martini that symbolizes the Mexican victoria (victory in English). The Mexican Bite at Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit is red, one of the colors of the Mexican flag, which represents the Spaniards that joined in the quest for Independence and the blood of the national heroes. At Casa Velas, the 2000 Martini is named after the 2,000 Mexicans who defeated the 6,000 French troops.

For those unable to travel to Mexico to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Velas Resorts shares the following cocktail recipes.
