BTMC President Message
2
TM Arfan Nateq
Dear readers, Milestones are made to be achieved, and if they were not achievable, then they would not have been called milestones. It is towards the end of another term of the never-ending journey of learning and development in the joyous world of Toastmasters. We will soon be reaching the station where we need to get off our seats and make place for others to continue leading the journey, learning from the experiences of the past, building and paving the path for others to follow.
June 17
At the beginning of the term, we at Bapco Toastmasters Club defined and agreed on certain milestones that we found crucial and would assist our members learning process further towards their betterment and personal progress. Although some of these milestones were not fully achieved as expected, but the journey itself, with all the challenges, the experience and the learning it carried along with it, made our endeavors and accomplishments on their own, to be triumphal milestones to proudly celebrate, and inspire us to set higher targets and objectives for the terms to come. We would continue our journey, and we would set higher milestones to achieve, and we would work harder and closer with each other, because we simply believe that a better person can always be of better service to his community, to his family, to his colleagues, and to himself.

District 20 Toastmasters Annual Conference Bahrain - 2017
June 17 5
The District 20 Toastmasters Annual Conference ‘DTAC 2017’ was held in our very own Kingdom of Bahrain from 18 May to 20 May 2017, under the theme ‘Towards Excellence’. More than 700 delegates from seven countries; Bahrain, UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Lebanon and Jordan, were gathered in the Gulf Hotel Bahrain for this big event. The three day program included several workshops conducted by internationally renowned speakers, keynote speeches and a Gala dinner. Apart from the educational and keynote sessions, contestants delivered an entertaining show of excellent speeches. The district champions in the four contest categories are: Sameera Khan (International Speech), Nisha Shivram (Evaluation Speech ), Khalid Ismaeel (Humorous Speech) and Raslyn Resiah (Table Topics). Winner of the International Speech contest will compete in the Public Speaking World Championship, due to take place later this year in Canada. We wish you all the best Sameera!
In DTAC, the Bapco Toastmasters Club received 3 PR awards, for the first time in its history received by our brilliant VPPR TM Khalid Abdulla, a Triple Crown Award received by our very active TM Sarah Faqihi and 3 club awards:
1 Program Quality Director Award: - Super 7 COT Award Ribbon

June 17 7
Back in 2016 at almost same time of the year as of now, my mentor TM Waleed Othman advised me to take the challenge of putting my name against the VPPR position in the BTMC club election and I was elected to fill in that role for the term. I had zero expectation on what this role is about and whether I have what it takes to fulfill the minimum PR requirement. During my first month while trying to find my way into the PR world, I was struck by another more challenging appointment, advised by BTMC club president TM Arfan Nateq, to take over the role of the Division K PR Manager and had the honor to work with TM Dr. Thuraya Juma.
Looking back to those days and to where I am now, I think that was the best decision I made throughout my toastmasters career so far. For the first time in the history of BTMC, I got awarded three ribbons during the DTAC 2017 for my PR contribution during the term. Behind every ribbon I awarded is a little story that I would like to tell for whoever is going to take over the PR role in the future.
Club Voice, Club Power 2016 - 2017 Award
To earn this award, I had to create a brand new website for the BTMC and rebrand it with the new Bapco branding theme. The club used to have an internal team site which wasn't updated and was not visible to the outsiders and especially our beloved Tatweer colleagues in the club.
I also created a new (Bapco rebranded) Facebook account and kept it up to date. This Facebook account came to replace the old inaccessible and dormant BTMC one. I revived the existing Instagram BTMC account. I published an article for every club meeting we had in the Bapco weekly star and islander magazines. Some were published in the local newspapers.

Special Newsletter 2016 – 2017 Award
As for this award, it was mainly due to the fact that I managed to create three newsletters in the term before the DTAC (one more newsletter is going to be published before end of this term – thanks to TM Fatema Hussain for her help). This was an unprecedented achievement for the club that I'm proud of. Special thanks go to TM Hussain A. Karim for creating the second newsletter and TM Sarah Faqihi who managed to pump the first newsletter (minimum requirement for the DTAC awards were 10 pages per newsletter). Thanks to all BTMC members who contributed with articles to beef up the newsletters content.
District PR Outstanding Support 2016 – 2017 Award
I believe this special award came upon serving BTMC club, Division K and the District during the DTAC. I filled in the role of Division K PR Manager for the term and I was active in the social media under the guidance for my mentor Division K Director TM Dr. Thuraya Juma. I took on the role of Head of PR during the second Club Officers Training (COT2). I was also appointed as the Head of PR for the BTAC-A and it was a fulfilling experience to work with DTM Sayed Abbas Al-Alawi, TM Tissa Higgoda and TM Zahra. I had a brilliant PR team to organize the BTAC-A and I would like to thank TM Vivek, TM Yasmina, TM Sayed Ali Qarooni and TM Abdulla Hijazi for giving me the honor to work with them.
I also created two newsletters for the Division K (one more newsletter is to be published before the end of this term). I can't really thank Division K Director TM Dr. Thuraya Juma for all of her coaching and guidance to me to organize their contents. I also would like to send special thanks to TM Abdulla Hijazi for creating the second newsletter and for putting his last final touches on their designs.

I was part of the BTAC-K PR team and part of the PR team for the TM Josaphine Lee event held in
Bahrain. I ended up the term to be part of the biggest Toastmasters event in the District which
was the DTAC 2017. It was a challenging and very nice experience to work with brilliant people
in the DTAC 2017 PR team. I would like here to thank TM Dr. Thuraya Juma who I started working
with in the early stages of the DTAC arrangement and then thanks to TM Rashid Maymoon to
continue the journey of the DTAC PR organization. Thanks go to every individual DTAC PR
member who I had the honor to work with.
It was so exciting and amazing journey which I advise all toastmasters to try. The PR world
taught me so many lessons in and out of Toastmasters. The trophies or the ribbons are not at all
the prize I was looking for, the actual prize was the people I met and the friends I made during
my PR journey. Thank you TM Waleed Othman for your guidance. Thank you TM Arfan Nateq for
putting trust in me. Thank you TM Dr. Thuraya for pushing me to recognize my potential. Thank
you TM Sarah Faqihi for being there to help whenever I needed. Thank you TM Abdulla Hijazi for
accepting my last minute designs requests. Thanks to all who contributed to make my PR
journey a successful one.

“The unprepared speaker has the right to be afraid.” - Ralph C. Smedley Time truly flies fast, it stills feels like yesterday when I first heard about the Triple Crown awarded presented by Toastmasters International. It was in DTAC 2016 in Abu Dhabi when I first heard about. My mind was dueling with curiosity; “I want it, I want, Oh I want it for my own. I’ve got to know, I’ve got to know, what is this award I have found? What is this?” I approached Toastmaster Arfan Nateq and asked him what is this Triple Crown award. Luckily, I was having this conversation with one of my greatest supporters. I started to read more about the educational award in Toastmasters International and I was ready to start my journey. The term 2016-2017 started with many goals, mine were set on achieving this award no matter what. It was little that I knew, with my new responsibilities during term as Area 35 Director time was rushing against me. Nevertheless, I vowed to myself to achieve this award and I have successfully did. Discussing my projects and receiving the constructive feedback and criticism from my mentor TM Mahmood Mirza has contributed to my progress significantly. I shared my plan with the Club Vice President Education TM Ali Shaker and he welcomed the idea and worked to provide the suitable meeting dates.

Discussing my next step in educational program with my mentor helped me in weighing the best road to take to achieve my goal. Reading and leaning about the requirements of each advanced manual and different challenges gave me abroad idea of the required time frame to complete each manual. Therefore, I chose to move forward with Leadership track as I was half way through it. The Advanced Leadership Bronze award requirements were all met except for two; delivering two educational sessions from The Successful Club Series and/or The Leadership Excellence Series. Both series provides Toastmaster with a set of prepared presentation to be used during delivery. I chose the successful club series and have successfully delivered my speeches confidently. I was honored on DTAC 2017 in Bahrain to receive my Triple Crown Award and be pinned by the Division Director TM Dr. Thuraya Juma. Speechless, overwhelmed and grateful that I had such a supporting and encouraging group and club to help me achieve one of my goals in Toastmasters journey. The Triple Crown award is just the beginning, I look forward to receive other prestigious awards. I realized that the requirements were not only to deliver but also to have determination, dedication and commitment toward your set goals. On this occasion, I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to all those who supported me and encouraged me through this journey. Your words and acts are appreciated. I would also like to thank the BTMC family. Triple Crown award is just a step away, I encourage all BTMC members to take that one step and achieve it. Be prepared and you shall not be afraid.

Table Topics Tips
13
Table Topics are an excellent opportunity to practice thinking on your feet and delivering a message clearly with minimal preparation. You are given 1 to 2 minutes to deliver an impromptu speech answering a question or commenting on a statement on this spot. For some of us, this can be nerve wracking! Here are some snack bite tips to help you ace your answer.
Listen carefully to the question • Even if you are nervous, try to focus on hearing the question
correctly. This is crucial to help you answer the question right.
Go with the first idea • Build on the first idea that comes to your mind. Don’t reject it in
the hope that a bigger idea will come.
Take your time • You have 30 seconds grace period before speaking. Make use of
that time to organize your ideas and calm your nerves.
Prepare something in advance • Keep a good inventory of stories, quotes, phrases, etc… in your
mind. This will enrich your material and help you think faster.
Tell a personal story • Stories are powerful. Your audience will remember a good
personal story, especially if they can relate to it.
Know when to stop • Try not to ramble your way to a long conclusion. Instead, recap
your answer and finish with a punchy ending.
Keep doing table topics • Keep practicing. The more you do it, the less nervous you’ll
become, the easier you’ll find it, and the more you’ll enjoy it.
