Newsletter #34 2020 Friday, 4 September 2020
Dear Parents, Guardians and Pupils,
I hope you enjoy the “Jerusalema” video’s that accompany this newsletter.
Just a little background to the staff video. We shot this video after our weekly Wednesday staff meeting. When the formal
meeting agenda was done, we cleared the tables and chairs in preparation for our dance lesson. At this time a number of staff
(no names… Mr Becker), tried to make a run for it! I had to almost barricade the door to keep them in, and convince them
that everyone could actually learn this dance. So when you view the staff’s efforts, please remember that these are not
professional dances and some were claiming that were not even willing and able. However, once we got into it, we had a lot
fun. We will be rolling out this experience next week when we try and get each grade on separate days to do the
“Jerusalema” dance on the field.
Today we released another of our “online” assemblies, which we have been missing. It is a chance to feel like we are all
together again. So if you have the time, I would encourage you to look at it.
Featured in this Virtual Assembly:

When I announced my retirement in 2019, I gave the time frame as September 2020. However, that was not planning on
COVID-19. I have therefore re-adjusted my plans and will retire on 31 December 2020. The Governors have completed
the interview process to find a new Principal, and they have made their nomination to the WCED on the 3rd of September
2020.
Just out of interest the post was advertised in the first Gazette of the year on the 17th of February 2020. This started a
process that led to choosing a “shortlist” from all applicants. This was then followed by the interview process and
psychometric testing, the checking of references and assessing written assignments done by the shortlisted applicants. This
process was all overseen by the Circuit Manager who was the WCED observer in each and every meeting. I mention this all
to illustrate the rigorous process that the Governors followed in making the very important selection of a new Principal for
the school.
It is now up to the Head of Education to make this appointment. So the ball is now in his court. The minute we have any
information, the Governing Body Chairman will share it with the school.
TEST AND PROJECT CALENDAR
The Third Term is well under way and Assessments will now begin in earnest. A Third Term Report will be issued to report
on each learner's academic progress this term. The third term Test and Project Calendars for Grades 8 to 11 are included
with this Newsletter. All learners will need to complete all Assessments in the subjects they take. Learners who are learning
online will need to arrange with their subject teachers a suitable day to come in to complete the required assessments after
the formal school day has ended.
5G UPDATE
A second parent meeting took place on the 1st of September. This time the speaker was Joffrey Hyman, a person who
described himself as having a passionate interest in the health effects of radio waves. He has done extensive research on the
internet and a gave a good presentation of his findings.
It must be said that his thesis is that all radio waves are harmful to life in some way and to some degree. So according to him
our current tower that carries 4G is already harmful, and this will become worse with 5G.
However, in spite of the Speaker’s clear position against the proliferation of this new technology from a health position as
well as from the fear of added surveillance, and control capacity it gives the manufacturers and governments, he gave lots of
food for thought.
The Governors were well represented at this meeting and I’m sure their feedback at the next Governors meeting will lead to
a healthy discussion on the way forward for the school.
Let me assure you that the Governors are guided first and foremost by what is in the best interests of the pupils and these
include what will maintain their safety.
Just some fact checks for those who attended the meeting:
France has not banned Wi-Fi throughout the school system, but only in schools and day care centres where the
children are less than 6 years old.
The health standard in Russia for radio wave exposure is not 1000 times higher than in South Africa.
The radio waves that are used in a microwave are hundreds of times more powerful than those we are exposed
normally in the same frequency band.

IN CLOSING - ARBOR WEEK (1 – 7 SEPTEMBER)
As it is National Arbor Week this week, I hope you have, or will
take a little time to appreciate the trees we are blessed to have
here in the Western Cape, and throughout our beautiful country.
Statistics show that over 50% of the world’s forests have already been cleared for cattle
farming. We can do something about it by:
East less beef; fewer hamburgers;
Meatless Mondays;
Plant a tree.
There are over 2000 indigenous trees in South Africa to choose from to plant if you have the grounds to do so. This year’s
common tree is the Cape Ash or Essenhout. Or perhaps you would like to go with this year’s rare tree – the Boabab. Go
online at http://pza.sanbi.org to read up about these trees.
Did you know that forests make sounds, which can be quite soothing to listen to? Click on the link below, then click on any
yellow dot representing a forest of the world. A dialogue box will open and you can play a sound clip of that forest:

THE WEEK AHEAD
Every year we have used the week before the Matric Exams to allow the Matrics to dress up in a different theme each day.
Over the years some of the themed days have seen some amazing outfits. Amongst the most fun have been the superhero’s
theme, and Disney characters. A favourite is the pyjama theme, which allows everyone to wear their favourite “onesies”.
I look forward to this week and seeing new outfits.
Monday, 7 September (Day 7) Grade 12 (dress up week), 10 & 8 at school in uniform
Blood Donor Drive from 10h00 to 13h45
Tuesday 8 September (Day 8) Grade, 12 (dress up week), 11 & 9 at school in casuals
Wednesday 9 September (Day 1) Grade 12 (dress up week), 11 & 9 at school in uniform
Thursday 10 September (Day 2) Grade 12 (dress up week), 10, & 8 at school in casuals
Friday, 11 September (Day 3) Grade 12 (dress up week), 11 & 9 at school in uniform
Finally, looking a little beyond this week:
Once the Matrics are writing, they will be confined to the Seminar room for the whole day and will not be coming into the
rest of the building. They are essentially “off campus”. We are therefore going to bring the Grade 11’s back full time from the
16th of September. So here is an early warning, that from the 16th of September, Grade 11’s will attend school every day.
Continue to take care and keep safe
Warm regards

BOOK OF THE WEEK REVIEW BY MRS ANNEKE BRIGHT
Zoo City – Lauren Beukes
One of my favourite South African authors wrote this amazing
Science Fiction novel in 2010, it won the 2010 Kitschies Red
Tentacle award for best novel, as well as the 2011 Arthur C. Clarke award.
Zoo City is a strange depiction of a ghetto area in an alternative, dystopian
Johannesburg. The residents are “animalled” for their crimes, given a
“mshavi” animal that is a manifestation of their crime. The animals
themselves give their owners a talent.
Meet Zinzi December who lives in Zoo City with her boyfriend, Benoit, who harbours a
mongoose. Zinzi has a sloth on her back and a dirty 419 scam habit, her talent is finding lost
things by using her “shave”, or otherwise called her magical power, she also gets into trouble
– a lot. This menagerie of animals in the ghetto has a symbiotic relationship with their owners.
When Zinzi finds one of her clients dead, and her last paycheque gets confiscated by the police,
she is forced to take on a job from music producer Odi Huron. She is tasked by him to find a
“teenybop” pop star, Songweza, one half of a pop duo called “iJosi”. One thing Zinzi does not
like doing is using her magic to find people, but she sees no other way out of the situation as
she has a huge debt to a drug lord, who does not like waiting for his money.
Zinzi then embarks on a dangerous search involving Gio, her former boyfriend from her life as
a journalist before her fall from grace. This catapults her deeper into the underbelly of a city
twisted with crime and magic, where she will be forced to confront dark secrets of former lives
including her own.
This multi-layered, immensely brilliant novel has something for everyone. There is horror,
crime, fantasy, magic, realism and rock and roll. Zinzi is tough, inventive and brave.
Zoo City takes you on a journey through the streets of Johannesburg, providing intricate details
of the city and the characters. I hope you enjoy this extremely well researched and entertaining
novel.
Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading
In 1954, the US Supreme Court ruled in the famous
Brown v Board of Education case that segregation of schools in the American South was
unconstitutional. Despite this ruling, integrating the schools was not a simple act.
The conflict over segregation in schools reached its height at Little Rock Central High School in
Arkansas. Nine black students attempted to enroll in 1957, prompting a fierce backlash from the
pro-segregation state government of governor Orval Faubus.
On September 4, 1957, the Arkansas National Guard were mobilized by Faubus to prevent the
integration of the students. The intervention of President Dwight D. Eisenhower proved decisive:
He ordered the National Guard be federalized, taking them out of the Governor’s control, and
ordered the US Army to support the integration of the school. The students were successfully
Integrated on September 23, 1957.
The nine students did not find it easy at Little Rock – they were regurlarly absued by the white
students. Nevertheless, integration eventually occurred in schools as a result of the Brown v
Board decision.
