WE ARE NOW TAKING IN ZONE ENROLMENTS FOR 2020

Welcome back to our last term for 2019 Already we have so many events timetabled in the term. We will be welcoming our 2020 Kindergarten students and parents who will be having transition sessions this term. Year 6 are continuing with their visits to their new high schools. Year 5 are preparing for leadership positions in 2020. Year 6 are mentoring Year 5 students in roles such as school reporters and school photographers. Year 6 leaders are reflecting and reviewing with staff to strengthen future student leadership positions. An increase in the lunchtime activities offered to students- yoga, dance, oval games, SRC activities. Playground Upgrades We have a very positive response to the new synthetic grass area that was installed over the holidays. Students are loving having the additional area to play in or just sit down with friends and chat. Teachers also have an inviting outdoor teaching area. Our old cubby house had to be removed due to safety concerns and has been replaced by an all weather stage which has highlighted the many performers we have at EHPS. P&C have purchased new soccer goals for the oval that has been very much appreciated by the playtime soccer stars.

Voluntary Contributions Future focused learning and technology will be a major focus at our school. You may have already seen some changes in the school library. Every year schools rely on and appreciate parent’s voluntary contributions. This year our contribution funds will go towards updating our technology resources. $40.00 a child or $70.00 a family.

Interrelate Parent/Child workshop- Monday 28th October As requested by parents the school has organised Interrelate session where parents and their children can attend together to support those questions that parents may find uncomfortable to answer. I have attended a few of these and the presenters are very entertaining in their interactive delivery of sexuality making it a very comfortable and informative session for all. P&C contributes to supporting our students. A huge thank you to our P&C who have purchased a computer charging station and 15 laptops. We now have 3 of these stations to support Stage 3, 2 and 1. They also purchased new school readers and maths equipment to replace outdated equipment and well loved readers. When everything arrives we will share these great new resources. Thank you to the school community whose contributions support the P&C fundraisers. All parents are welcome to be a part of our great P&C. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 12th November and we would love new members to continue being a part of the important role a P&C has in a school as the parent voice working in partnership with our school.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) In our next newsletter we will be announcing the winning image for the schools new PBL Mascot. Staff and students focus has been on the 3 nominated expectations of Responsibility, Respect and Strive. These students have had their Salties drawn from the tub at a morning assembly. They had achieved a Salty for showing expected behaviours at school in lining up at assembly or walking around the school safely. Congratulations to Elsie P, Bailey M, Layla A, Jayden S, Ruby

L. 2020 Student Leaders: It is that time of year where we are looking towards next year’s student leaders. In Week 1, after much discussion Year 5 nominated possible candidates for prefects and captains. Only Year 5 students are involved in this first part of the process, as they know each other the best. There were 39 nominations all up. Year 5 then voted for their top 16 choices, who will now campaign to be student leaders for 2020. These 16 students will have a poster on display outside the canteen and will be giving a speech to the

whole school on Tuesday in Week 4, outlining the reasons why they would be good leaders for our school.

After the speeches, the whole school will vote for their top 8 choices, who will then become our prefects

and captains for 2020. The other candidates will be our Sport House Captains for 2020, thus allowing all children who reach our top 16 to be part of our Year 6 Leadership Group.

During Week 5/6 the children will receive a letter home informing them if they have been chosen as one

of our Prefect body or Sports Captains. Actual positions, such as captains, vice-captains and prefects will be announced on Presentation Day. Well done to all children who displayed a wonderful attitude during nominations. We understand there will be disappointed children, as we have so many great pupils to choose from, however, there will be other opportunities next year for all Year 6 children to display their leadership skills and take on responsibilities. Congratulations to our final 16 candidates. Mrs Duncan, Mrs Coleman, Mr Longfield, Miss Hammond

Students Who Shine Cooper from 5C was very proud to read to be his piece of descriptive writing. The scaly creature moving slowly to the water, its sharp teeth, spotty eyes glaring at its prey looking at the bird ready to bite. As smelly as slime all you can see is the birds demise, the crocodile about to bite. Feels like the bark on an old oak tree. Snap goes its jaw. There goes the bird and the scaly creature goes down in the water looking for its next snack. By Cooper 5C

Noah D wrote me a persuasive text about why school holidays should be extended. He wrote some great points and when discussed with the staff they all agreed we should extend holidays. I don’t know how the Department of Education will support his request. All classes have had a focus on writing in Term 3 and 4. Mr Flemings Year 1 were very excited to share their great efforts at the end of the term. Dear Amy I am writing because I miss you. You are my best friend in the world. Before you went away, we had lots of fun and played fun games. When you went away, I thought about you every day and my life was grey. I felt sad and lonely. Love your friend Louis. Sharni Dear Amy I am writing to say hello. I wish you could come back. I liked to say cooee Amy across the fence. I liked sharing secrets and after you gone away, I felt sad. I think you are feeling sad too. From Louis. Ella Dear Amy I am writing to say hello. I was wondering what you are feeling like. I am feeling mad that your parents took you away from me. I don’t look at the clouds anymore. I stop digging holes. From your best friend Louis. Koby Dear Amy I am writing to say hello. I miss Amy. I am crying and my world is now rain and grey and sad and I miss Amy. I love Amy. Scarlett Dear Amy I am writing a letter to you. I have stopped looking at the clouds and stop dressing up and my world is grey. Love from Louis. Violet

Blake from 2H brought in an example of what the children in John Hunter Hospital could do with the craft resources Isabel and SRC are collecting from our school. This collection will end next Friday. Classes are having a competition to see which class can donate/bring in the most resources.

School Behaviour flow chart With the inclusion of PBL at our school we have upgraded our EHPS Behaviour flow chart to reflect the expectations of Responsibility, Respect and Strive. This document has been reviewed and revised by students, staff and parents over the last 2 years. It outlines some behaviours identified that are not acceptable and a variety of consequences that may be incurred. The chart is present and has been discussed in every classroom. As part of our positive behaviour strategy we have included a reset class for students. This is a positive behaviour strategy to give them time out to reflect and reset their behaviour in a safe environment, without negative consequences on their return to their class. If the behaviour continues on their return then there is consequences put in place. Lunchtime R&R (Reflect and Reset) sessions are run by executive staff to follow up with students on any incidents of concern.

Make the most of all the awesome moments Kathryn Duncan Principal

Student Reporters We would like to introduce…..

Welcoming Coby and Chloie! Chloie and Coby are new students at EHPS. Coby enjoys gymnastics and playing soccer with his friends. Two of his favourite things to do at school are play hide and seek and tips. Lucky our school has PLENTY of space Coby! What do you like about our school? “I like the teachers, my friends and the playground, especially the slide,” Coby said with a cheerful face. “I like the teachers and my friends,” added Chloe. It sounds like they have had a great start here at EHPS. FUN FACT: They have a male cat named Frosty who is ginger and white. Reported by Ella 6H and Nick 6H

Attention All Cheerleaders! Last weekend Zahlia from 5C, Nick from 6H and Alexis from 4G went to Broadmeadow Basketball Stadium to participate in a cheerleading completion called ACE. They won 1st place, level 2 Grand Champions. They were also awarded a Pinnacle Bid (awarded to the grand champion of each division). WOW! What an accomplishment! They were ecstatic when they won and teammates started to cry tears of happiness because they hadn’t won all year.

How do you prepare for the competition? “We practice and rehearse for months on end but it's hard to prepare for what you will actually feel like once you're onstage,” answered Zahlia. Our advice is just remember the competition should be fun and try to relax and simply do your best. Take a deep breath and show the judges what you're all about.

Reported by Angel 6L and Ben 6L Written by Angel 6L and Nick 6H

Jasmin’s Got Talent! Jasmin S from 4G is an astonishing and committed dancer. She LOVES many different types of dancing, including floor, hip-hop and ballet. Wow! That’s a lot of dancing Jasmin! Jasmin is a confident dancer who has received many medals for her dancing ability and sportsmanship. We hope someday we can watch Jasmin dance!

Stage 3 Environmental & Sustainability Excursion to Bolton Point Park In the last week of Term 3, ten Stage 3 students went on an excursion with Miss Fulton to Bolton Point Park. The excursion was run by the Wetlands Environmental Education Centre who had prepared lots of environmental investigations for us. The investigations were on erosion, water quality and micro-plastics. Here’s what the EHPS students thought and learnt. Today my favourite investigation was trying to find micro-plastics and testing the water quality because we go to sift and got to use equipment we never used before. I learnt that our clothes are made out of plastic and micro-plastics are everywhere in the world. – Aylia 5L My favourite activity was micro-plastics because I enjoyed how we got to be hands on. I learnt that greeny lake water is normal and if the water is other colours then it may contain other substances. – Kirstin 6L My favourite investigation was water quality because I really liked how we got to measure what’s what etc. I also learned where storm water goes and what it does. – William 5C I liked all the activities, they were all exciting and new to me. I learnt about micro-plastics and water and different effects on the water. – Charlotte 6H My favourite investigation was micro-plastics because I found a sheet plastic in the water. Something I learnt was that our clothing contains plastic. – Nick 6H My favourite thing was the micro-plastics because it was fun. I learnt that plastic does not break down they break up. – Tahlya 6L Today my favourite investigation was the micro-plastics because it’s a new way to find little plastic bits. What did I learn? That you can find just tiny bits of plastic in the ocean. – Lani 5L My favourite activity was water quality because we got to test the water for the council to see what they can do to stop pollution to the water. I learnt that rocks on the side of the water aren’t there for decoration it’s to stop erosion. – Emilee 5L My favourite investigation was the micro-plastics because we learnt that plastics break down in to small plastic sheets that blow into lakes. I also learnt that there was such a thing as erosion. – Alexis 5C My favourite activity was micro-plastics because we got to learn about things that can be found beyond what we can see. I learnt that our clothes have plastic in them and the plastic can come off when we wash them. – Mahli 6H

Recycling Reminder Students at EHPS have been doing a great job reducing our waste! We are using Fruit Buckets to compost our food scraps; a Return & Earn bin to recycle our drink containers; RedCycle bins to recycle soft, scrunchable plastics (except cling wrap) and recycling bins for all other recyclable items like paper, cardboard and some hard plastics. Have you been reducing your waste at home too? A reminder that this term we will begin collecting plastic bottle lids, bread tags, used batteries, used writing instruments (except pencils), used oral care items. Please start collecting these items at home to bring in. Keep an eye out for our collection boxes outside the office and for more information in the next newsletter! Discovery Garden Thank you Thank you to all the families and students who have donated their plants from Woolworths' Discovery Garden! EHPS are going to have flourishing vege gardens very soon!

Term 4 Week 2

Hi Everyone,

Welcome back to Term 4!

EHPS P&C AGM

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 12th November 2019 @ 6pm in the School Library.

The meeting will commence with all positions being declared vacant and nominations will be taken for P&C

positions. If you are interested in nominating for a position on the P&C you need to be a financial member and

fill in a nomination form. These can be collected from the office.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Volunteers

We are in desperate need of helpers in our Canteen. When we do not have enough volunteers, our canteen

closes for operation, and each day the canteen is closed we miss the opportunity to make a profit. The

financial support we provide to EHPS and its students relies heavily on money made in our canteen. So,

please, if you are able to offer any time as a volunteer in our canteen, please contact us on 0434 186 774,

email us at [email protected], or leave your name and contact details at the office and one

of our lovely members will contact you.

NEW THINGS!

We are very proud to let you know that we have presented EHPS with a cheque for $20 000 to go towards

new laptops and charging equipment, maths resources and home readers. Some of these items have been

purchased already, and are being used by students in classrooms.

Without your dedicated and ongoing support of our fundraising initiatives, this would not have been possible.

Thank you!

Bunnings BBQ

We will be holding a Bunnings BBQ on Saturday 9th November 2019 @

Bunnings Boolaroo. We will be looking for volunteers to help make this

a successful event. Giving up just an hour of your day will help us out.

Listen out for information about how to put your name down to help at

this event.

Term 4 Disco

Our End of Year Disco will be held on Wednesday 27th November 2019. It will run in the format of a split disco, as per our Term 1 Disco. We acknowledge there were logistical issues at our previous Disco, and we have been working to find solutions to these problems. We will trial new procedures and strategies to make pick up and drop off, and food purchasing less concerning for everyone. As the event approaches we will have more information about our problem solving solutions

Art Fundraising

Students have completed Art in class for our annual Art Fundraiser. This fundraiser gives families the opportunity to purchase a range of items such as calendars, diaries and other products that are personalised with your child’s unique and individual art work. These make great gift ideas, especially for those who are hard to buy for! Information about ordering will come home shortly.

Canteen Operation and Roster Thank you to the volunteers that gave up their time to work in our canteen in Term 3. Your help and support

is greatly appreciated. To thank our volunteers we hold a Canteen Volunteer Draw at the end of each term,

out Term 3 winners were Natalie B and Bronwyn W who both took home Coles Myer gift Cards for their help.

Will you be a winner in Term 4?? Contact us now if you are able to

help us out this Term.
