Dear Friends,

Autumn is upon us and we notice the

changing of the leaves, birds begin to fly

south for the winter, things change.

Have you heard the question “How many

Methodists does it take to change a light bulb?” or the cry “Change,

CHANGE, CHANGE”, or people that quote the line from the old

hymn by Anna Laetitia Waring (1823 – 1910) “For nothing changes

here”. Sorry friends, as Bob Dylan wrote in 1964, “The times they

are a changin”. The world is changing and why shouldn’t we change

the way we do things? You will realise that when you pay for things

in shops or even your car parking at the hospital (Lincoln or

Grimsby) more and more people use a card to pay for things. Many

people also pay for things monthly by Standing Order.

Following a Stewards’ Meeting recently it has been agreed to

change the way we take up our weekly offering for a trial period

beginning with the next plan, the one beginning in December.

What will happen is that the normal collection plate will be placed on

the table just inside the door, opposite the coffee serving hatch, for

you to put your money on. At the appropriate

time in the service the plate will still be brought

to the front for the preacher to dedicate, along

with the dedication of our lives.

The principle difference will be that the plate will

NOT be passed along the rows of chairs with

excruciating embarrassment for some people of not putting anything

on it as they have already paid direct from their bank account, or

people that have forgotten their purse, or visitors who have not

brought any change for a collection.

Page 3: Newsletter€¦ · 2015, the ISS were delighted to participate in the ‘Boundless’ International Congress at the O2 Arena, London, which celebrated the 150th anniversary of The

Come on friends let’s give it a try, we have nothing to lose and if it

doesn’t work we can always go back to the old way of passing the

plate round for people to place their loose change on.

Jesus changed things when he tore up the Jewish rules of not

working on the Sabbath and healed the sick; as He changed things,

so can we.

It is God that is unchanging not the way we do things.

God Bless

Spread a Little Happiness

It is Christmas Shoe Box time again, and we are asking

people to fill Shoe-Boxes for children and babies to be sent to

deprived parts of Eastern Europe. They can be filled with toys,

teenage or baby things or household goods and please

include £2.00 for the transport costs.

Local schools and churches are all helping so please pick up a

special box in the Church and return it, filled, by 15th

November.

With thanks from Ken James, Louth Rotary

Prayers for November:

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving

be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may

live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”

So writes Paul to Timothy (1 Tim 2:1,2) almost 2000 years ago, but his

words are timeless and could have been written 2 weeks ago. In a period of

global political turbulence these verses seem particularly apt. It is hard for

ordinary people to know what to do when they see national

leaders facing difficult decisions and unprecedented

circumstances. We could march, protest, complain, rally … or

pray. When we can’t work out what the right solutions are, the very

least we can do is to pray for God to intervene.

Loving God, at a time when there is increasing unrest and growing fear of what is coming on the earth, we bring before You the leaders of the nations of the world, and pray that in Your grace You would

intervene.

We pray that world leaders would seek wisdom and justice, mercy and

truth, freedom and grace. May they know the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.

We pray for those whose lives are torn by war and bloodshed, corruption and unrest: that they would experience Your mercy and peace. May they know the love of the Father. We pray for the great day when Jesus returns: that until then we would be His heart and hands, His voice and His presence. May we demonstrate

the boldness and compassion of the Son. Amen.

One of our oldest members, Mrs Olive Fytche, has died a few days

prior to her 101st birthday. Her funeral was held on Monday, 7th

October in Peterborough. Olive (and her late husband who owned a

shop in Louth) had lived in St Mary’s Lane for over 70 years until in

2017, due to a decline in her health, she moved to Braeburn Lodge

Care Home at Deeping St James to be nearer to her family.

Visits to Olive would often find us talking about a shared

interest in knitting and she was always eager to talk

about her family of whom she was immensely proud.

She enjoyed looking out at her garden which contained

a very productive cooking apple tree and she would

invite me to go into the garden in the autumn and fill a

bag of windfalls : delicious!

Our thoughts are with Olive’s family and friends.

Kath Adams, Pastoral Visitor

We must also remember John Dennis, a local preacher, handyman

and friend to many who passed away after a short illness on 29th

August 2019, aged 81. His funeral was held on Tuesday, 17th

September at Southwell; to where he had moved a few years ago to

be near some of his family.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Janet, his wife, and all the family.

A belated birthday congratulations must go to Alice and

Rachel Rolph who celebrated their 21st birthdays on 21st

October 2019.

Notice boards : A big thank you to Catherine Rolph who has

revitalised not only our notice board in the foyer, but also the one on

Eastgate, making it more attractive and informative.

JMA (Junior Mission for All) This is part of the Methodist Church’s

mission programme for children and young people to raise funds for the

World Mission Fund and the Mission in Britain Fund.

Last year we raised £34.46. In total JMA collectors in the UK raised over

£97,000 of which 80% went to the World Mission Fund to help 60 partner

churches in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific.

The other 20% supported Methodist mission projects across the UK.

For more information about JMA and if you would like to be a collector

please contact Leisa Wood.

Visit by the Salvation Army International Staff Songsters

In November the Salvation Army is celebrating 135 years of Christian witness in

Louth and to mark the occasion are hosting a visit by the International Staff

Songsters, the organisation’s premier choir whose mission is to express the gospel

through music. The style of the ISS spans a large range of Christian music from

contemporary to classical, spirituals to traditional songs. Whatever the genre, the ISS

seek to praise and worship God through music, and to be effective communicators of

the gospel.

All members are Salvationists, active in their local Salvation Army corps (churches)

and come from many different areas of employment. Their current Leader, Dorothy

Nancekievill, is Head Teacher at Farrington’s School in Chislehurst and until the end

of 2014 was Director of Music at Wells Cathedral School. The choir has made

overseas visits to places including Canada, Australia and South America. In July

2015, the ISS were delighted to participate in the ‘Boundless’ International Congress

at the O2 Arena, London, which celebrated the 150th

anniversary of The Salvation

Army.

We are delighted to host the ISS who will be leading our worship on the

morning of Sunday 17th November. Please note that the service will

commence at 10.30am and will be followed by refreshments.

This will be a wonderful opportunity to praise God in the company and

leadership of this internationally acclaimed choir. Please come and invite

your family and friends!

Church collections

As we endeavour to be an even more welcoming church, some have

commented that the practice of passing round the collection plate and

standing up when it is brought forward could be off putting to newcomers

and visitors. For a trial period therefore, we are going to cease the

practice of standing as the collection is brought forward and are

considering other ways of enabling people to make their offering.

If you would like to join the many people who have set up a Direct Debit or

Standing Order please speak to Nancy C, Jean P or one of the stewards.

Advance notices about arrangements on 1st December

On Advent Sunday, 1st Dec, we will once again be welcoming people into

church during the town’s Christmas market. This event will replace both

morning services on that date.

Please support this event which is an opportunity for us to share the Good

News of Jesus. Offers of Mince pies will be gratefully received by the

stewards! Kath Adams, Steward
