Scholarship winner

C ongratulations to Elyssa Smith of Bartlett, selected as the 2015 Arts in Bartlett Scholarship winner. Elyssa graduated from Larkin High School in the top 2% of her class. She is a clarinetist and pianist, and plans to study Music Education at the University of North Texas, with a career goal to be a band director. “I want to share my passion for music and inspire future students like my band director Mr. Dobbeck did for me,” Elyssa said. She’s involved with the Tri-M Music Honor Society, marching band, wind ensemble, concert band, jazz band, pit orchestra, and Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra. She has worked at the Bartlett Aquatic Center, Bartlett Little League and has taught clarinet lessons. She received awards with ILMEA (IL Music Educa-tors Association) as an All-State Honors Band Selectee, was an ILMEA District Music Festival Participant, Fox Valley Music Festival participant, Division 1 Ranking at IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest, and winner of Larkin High School Concerto Competition. “The arts have greatly influenced my life,” she said. “If I would not have

joined band in fifth grade, I believe I would not be the responsible and

reliable student that I am now. Also, I would not be at Larkin High School

in the Visual and Performing Arts Academy being given many perform-

ance opportunities. ”

You can hear Elyssa play her clarinet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday June 27 on

the Bartlett Festival of the Arts stage.

Letter from the President It’s June, halfway through the year, and time for the 13Th Annual Festival of the Arts! This is one of the best times of the year for celebrating the arts in Bartlett. On June 27 and 28, the Bartlett “Gazebo” Park is filled with beauty. Fine art from around the region is on display and for sale, while live music and dance is continuous on the stage. This is a family event, with many children’s art activities in the gazebo, their own “YAA” (young art appreciator) tent, and a world drumming tent for all ages to participate. Henna art, food and beverages are available. We have many new bands, dance troupes and performers this year, that include Indian. Polish, and Mexican dance, and Turkish music. On Saturday, the bands perform until 9pm. Come early on Sunday, and join the 9:30 a.m. one-hour walking tour of historic buildings in a three block area of the park. Please make it a priority to come to the annual Festival of the Arts, and enjoy what many have spent years to create and now share with our community.

Another wonderful event is our second “$5 Friday” on June 19th from 7-9pm, for an evening of art, music, food, drink and conversation. Enjoy the “Daydreams: Abstract Art” reception, where featured artist Mark Yee from Chicago and local artists will be present and sharing their creative process, while jazz pianist and vocalist Louise Kelly performs.

We are partnering with the Bartlett Public Library, with a “Read to the Rhythm Around the World” program. The first event is for age 3 to grade 1, with a caregiver, on June 26th from 10-11am at our Arts Center. The second event is July 10 for grades 2-6, followed with a 20th Annual Kaleidoscope Family Day at the Art Institute on July 18. Registration is required for these events.

An exciting new program is the “Summer of Music” children’s choir being led by well known local piano and voice teacher Mindy Dupee to start July 16. Some renovation work is necessary to make the community room more sound proof and to expand the performance area, so we are using an online fundraising system “Crowdrise” to pay for it. https://www.crowdrise.com/artsinbartlettperformancespace

Save the date! There are six professional musicians from Taiwan visiting Chicago and presenting a concert at Bartlett Village Hall on July 13th at 10:00am, in honor of the 5th anniversary of the Sister City International exchange between Bartlett and Miaoli, Taiwan. The theme of this musical tour is "The Impression of Formosa." They will perform Hakka Chamber music in addition to other folk music

We will continue Dinearound specials at various restaurants, so look for details in our newsletters and email updates. The May Dine Out at TL’s Four Seasons was a success!

We have also planning another Fox Valley Repertory Theatre show at Pheasant Run Resort, to see “Maybe Baby, It’s You” on Friday, September 25. You can already purchase discounted tickets at the Center for the Arts, 215 S. Main. These are all fun ways to raise money for your local arts council. We need your support!

It is our membership that sustains Arts in Bartlett, a volunteer-run arts council, so please continue to support us with your membership and invite new individuals, organizations and businesses to join. Our membership dues have never been raised in our 12 year history, so dues for 2016 will be raised by $5 beginning starting July 1. This will be our usual summer special of getting the rest of the year and all the next year (2016) for the same low price. We really need our membership’s input and brainstorming on fundraising, sponsorships, membership drives, programming and more. All Arts in Bartlett members are invited to come to the next Board meeting on June 22 at 6:30pm in the Bartlett Arts Cen-ter, 215 S Main. If you are able to volunteer at the Art Festival, this is an opportunity to get details .We hope that you support our mission to bring more arts to Bartlett, volunteer to join a committee, attend our events, and spread the news about Arts in Bartlett, a vibrant arts council!

Thanks! Rita Lopienski

State Grant allows for paid internships this summer

Arts in Bartlett applied for and received a grant for $2,400 from the Illinois Arts Council for the Youth Employment in the Arts program. This allows us to pay two interns this summer who will be getting valuable experience in the nonprofit arts sector. They are Christopher Kubick, who will be a senior next year at Bartlett High School. He is an Eagle Scout and has held several leadership po-sitions within the Boy Scouts. He plays clarinet in the marching and symphonic bands. He is con-sidering graphic arts as a career. Madeline Derango returns her second summer as an intern. She lives in Bartlett and attends St. Francis High School in Wheaton where she’ll be a junior this fall. She is involved in band, Scholastic Bowl, National Honors Society, student government and works on the newspaper.

July 18 Field Trip: reserve now

S aturday, July 18, Arts in Bartlett and the Bart-lett Public Library will sponsor a field trip to

the Art Institute of Chicago during one of the big-gest family festivals of the year — the 20th An-nual Kaleidoscope Family. You must register in advance at the library or Arts in Bartlett, 215 S. Main St. We will board the Metra train to Union Station at 9:05 a.m. and will then take a trolley from Union Station to the Art Institute. Train fare is $6.50 each way; best buy is the $8.00 weekend pass. Cost for seniors with a reduced rate permit and students over 12 with school ID is $3.25 each way. Children 11 and under are free on weekends with a paying adult (3 children allowed per adult). We will arrive at the Art Institute’s Ryan Educa-tion Center in the new wing about 10:30. Co-founder of Arts in Bartlett Mary Erbach, who is Assistant Director of Interpretive Exhibitions and Family Programs at the Art Institute, will greet us. You can choose from among activity stations all over the museum. You may bring your lunch and store it but you’ll need to eat it outside the mu-seum. You can stay as long as you like and return to the train on your own.

This trip is entirely free except for your train fare. Seating in the trolley is limited to 28 people, so the first 28 members registering will get a seat. Others will need to find their own way by foot, bus or taxi. We can have up to 50 people on the tour. Because this is geared toward families, we ask that you have at least one child or teen in your party. To register, send an email to [email protected] with your name, how many in your party, and ages of the children or register at the library. .

.Arts in Bartlett is now on “CrowdRise”

W e have joined the popular online website CrowdRise used by many of the major (and

small) charities to raise money for specific projects. Our project’s goal is to double the existing perform-ance and audience capacity at the Arts Center by merging the community room and the smaller gallery into one unified performance suite for use within the community of Bartlett. This gives a larger space for rehearsals for the International Chorus and the new Children’s Choir, piano lessons, music recitals, artistic

performance and meeting space. This means raising funds to meet the costs of this expansion, which will include materials such as dry wall, steel beams, acoustic sound insulation, electrical work, lighting, AV equipment and decorating. So please go to https://www.crowdrise.com/artsinbartlettperformancespace give a donation to helping us make a “center for the arts” for performance as well as the visual arts.

.Deadline is July 15 for button design entries

B artlett Heritage Days is now preparing for its 6th annual Heritage Days, September 11-13, 2015, and needs a new button for this year’s celebration. Last year, Arts in

Bartlett member Derek Kleckner was the winner. The person whose design is selected receives a $100 prize. The design will be used in a 3 inch button that will be used to promote the 2015 event. The digital entries must be sent by July 15 on CD or by email to [email protected]. The winner will be notified by August 1 and credited in pub-licity announcing the new button.
