    FADE IN

    EXT. BASEBALL DIAMOND DAY

JACOB SPREEMAN, a 5th grader, is standing on

a pitcher's mound in the middle of a little

    league game.

    He thinks to himself

    JACOB

    We can beat these

    guys. I just know I

    can do it.

He wipes his brow, winds up and pitches afast ball.

The batter swings at the ball and misses.

    UMPIRE

    Steeeee-rike three!

The crowd roars. They're on their feet.

Jacob tosses his mit into the air.

    JACOB

    A no hitter! We've

    won the division!

Jacob's winning team rushes out and picks him

up onto their shoulders and carry him around

    the field chanting.

    WINNING TEAM

    We've won the

    division! We've won

    the division!

    CU ON JACOB'S SMILING FACE

The word "division" echoes over and over in

    the background

PULL BACK FROM A CU SHOT OF JACOB'S FACE

Jacob is sitting in class at his desk, his

head in his hands, his math book open on his

desk with loose leaf paper and a pencil. His

teacher MRS. BURGERSNIFFER speaks to Jacob

from the front of the classroom.

    MRS. BURGERSNIFFER

    (O.S.)

    Division. I said

    Division. Mr.

    Spreeman, are youdaydreaming again?

    Jacob!

UPSHOT OF MRS. BURGERSNIFFER, her hands on

her hips and chalk in hand.

    BACK ON JACOB

    JACOB

    A no-hitter. Huh? Oh,

    Mrs. Burgersniffer!

Jacob is startled and knocks everything off

of his desk. Jacob's classmates all laugh.

    MRS. BURGERSNIFFER

    Jacob, come up to the

    board, please, andsolve this division

    problem.

    JACOB

    I...um...I don't....

    MRS. BURGERSNIFFER

    7/51

    I'm waiting.

Jacob sheepishly walks up to the board and

takes the chalk in hand. On the board is

    written: 2,683 divided by 36.

    JACOB

    Uh...um...holy cow.

    Um...36...uh.... hold

    the three?

    The classmates laugh.

    MRS. BURGERSNIFFER

    Enough class.

    (to

    Jacob)

    So, you can't do the

    math.

The other classmates jeer with "Aw" and

    "can't do the math."

    MRS. BURGERSNIFFERSince you weren't

    paying attention in

    class, I am going to

    assign you extra

    homework.

    JACOB

    But...but...but...geez

    e Mrs. Burgersniffer.

Mrs. Burgersniffer bends down to look Jacobin the eye.

    MRS. BURGERSNIFFER

    When I get done with

    you, you will eat

    math, you will sleep

    math, you will even

    daydream math. Take

    your seat please.

Jacob sheepishly walks back to his desk. A

classmate leans over and whispers to him.

    CLASSMATE

    DUH-dreamer. Duh!

    Other surrounding classmates within earshot

    snicker.

    ANOTHER CLASSMATE

    Have fun tonight,

    division-boy. Duh!

Jacob flops into his seat and puts his head

    in his hands.

    INT. JACOB'S BEDROOM EVENING

Jacob is sitting at his desk, his head in his

hands, his math book open, loose leaf paper

    and a pencil and crayons.

    JACOB

    Oh man, way-long

    division, extreme

    subtraction, outta-

    control multiplication

    and nasty word

    problems. I can't

    stand it.

    JACOB'S MOM (O.S.)(calling)

    Jacob, finish your

    homework and you can

    have dessert.

    JACOB

    Aw mom.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    11/51

Jacob pulls out a sheet of paper, grabs his

    crayons and begins to draw.

    OVER THE SHOULDER

MOVE IN for a closer look at what Jacob isdrawing till we have a CLOSE UP of what is on

    the loose leaf paper.

It's DETECTIVE CRIME SPREE and his assistant

    LOUIE, a penguin.

Detective Crime Spree wears a hat and trench

coat and Louie wears a hat, ala Film Noire.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    12/51

From this point on in the story, the

background has light blue lines, occasional

jelly stains, finger prints and splotches and

smears, sometimes hole punches, as the story

of "Crime Spree" takes place on Jacob's loose

leaf paper, drawn in a more child-like

    manner.

Jacob writes title: Crime Spree: Attack of

    the Math-O-Matic

Detective Crime Spree and Louie are

    picnicking in a city park.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    (cell-

    phone

    to his

    ear)Right, chief.

    (hangs

    up)

    Headquarters says

    there's a monster

    robot on the loose

    spitting out numbers

    and destroying the

    city, a Math-O-Matic.

    LOUIE

    (holding a steaming mug)

Ack. I'm not finishedwith my Sardine Latt.

    Ack-ack.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    Duty calls, Louie.

    The picnic's over. You

    know what we have

    here, don't you?

    LOUIE

    Ants?

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    A math problem.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    14/51

Louie looks into his mug and sees vibration

    ripples like in "Jurassic Park."

SFX: A deep Thump thump shakes everything.

Detective Spree looks down at a bowl of jelly

    that is shaking wildly.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

What in the name of my

    quivering bowl of

    jelly---?

The jelly plops over and falls out of the

    bowl.

Spree and Louie look around and see, coming

over the horizon of the city, the silhouette

of a giant robot that looks like Mrs.

Burgersniffer. On its chest are the letters:

    M.O.M. It's the Math-O-Matic.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    15/51

The Math-O-Matic stomps on two buildings,

flattening them. It stops and looks around.

CU on the face of the Math-O-Matic.

The eyes begin to glow red.

The Math-O-Matic roars and spews out a number

from its mouth. The number lands, sprouts

arms and legs and scampers off. It kicks

over a fire hydrant sending a strong stream

    of water into the air.

The Math-O-Matic spews out another number

which lands, splits in half and forms two

numbers. Both numbers sprout arms and legs

and scamper off. They start to uproot treesin the park.

The Math-O-Matic continues to spew out

numbers which divide and grow in quantity.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    Good golly, Miss

    Molly! It's huge!

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    16/51

    LOUIE

    Ack-ack. There goes

    my latt break. And

    don't call me Molly.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    Numbers are dividing.

    Numbers are

    multiplying

    everywhere. They'reout of control.

    LOUIE

    This adds up to

    trouble, no doubt.

    Ack.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    17/51

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    It's time to subtract

    this menace from the

    city. Into the

    Spreemobile. It's

    Crime Spree to therescue!

Louie and Spree jump to action and collide

into each other, get up and run off. They

hop into the Spreemobile, a slick black race

car with the letter "S" on the side of it and

a flashing blue light on top.

The Spreemobile speeds off in a cloud of

    dust.

    SFX: Siren

    EXT. CITY PARK MOMENTS LATER

Spree and Louie pull behind the Math-O-Matic

in their Spreemobile, screech to a halt and

jump out. The Math-O-Matic is busy chomping

    on a tree.

They scramble over each other to get to the

trunk of the car and pop it open.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    18/51

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    Louie, grab some rope.

Louie leans into the trunk, pulls out rope

and walks off trailing the rope behind him.

Spree looks into the trunk. It's jam packed

with all kinds of junk and other

miscellaneous items. He half buries himself

head first in the junk reaching for

something, then pulls out a sack of

    baseballs.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    19/51

    LOUIE

    Ack. What do you

    think this is, a

    picnic?

    DETECTIVE SPREENo time for that.

    Quick, tie that rope

    to a tree and run

    around the legs of the

    Math-O-Matic before it

    sees you.

    LOUIE

    Ah ha, ack. The 'ol

    trip 'em up routine.

    Not to worry, I'll

    have that thing

    surrounded in no time.

    Ack.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    Uh...speaking of

    surrounded...

POV of Detective Spree and Louie. CAMERA

    PANS

We see they are surrounded by numbers.

The numbers close in and pounce but Spree

grabs the sack of balls and he and Louie leap

up onto the roof of the car. They tie

themselves together with rope, make a loop

and toss it. The loop hooks onto a tree limb.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    21/51

The Math-O-Matic spins around, roars and also

takes off after Detective Spree and Louie.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    Quick Louie. Routine

    12!

Louie jumps into some bushes and waits for

the Math-O-Matic to pass by. He leaps out

and runs circles around it in a blur,

wrapping the rope around it's legs.

    The Math-O-Matic trips and falls.

Spree leaps out of the way as the Math-O-

Matic lands on top of the numbers.

The numbers crawl out from under the Math-O-

Matic but now they are smaller and they are

    fractions. They stagger about.

    ANGLE ON LOUIE

    LOUIE

    (peeking out

    from the

    bushes)

    Ack-Ack! Fractions.

    They're smaller but

    there's more of them.

A shadow looms over Louie. He looks up and we

see the Math-O-Matic is now standing over

him. It's looking a little damaged, with

loose springs and bent parts. It raises its

hands and roars. The eyes begin to glow red.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    23/51

    This bucket of bolts

    is unstoppable. We

    need a back-up.

    LOUIE

    We need to hit theroad!

Spree and Louie take off as the Math-O-Matic

chases them, but limping because it is

damaged. It's followed by the stream of

    little fractions.

Spree talks into his cellphone as they run.

They come to a baseball diamond in the center

    of the park.

    ANGLE ON THE MATH-O-MATIC

The Math-O-Matic eyes glow red and it spews

out two numbers that land in front of Spree

and Louie, blocking their path. The numbers

are holding something like a banner between

them. It has a word problem written on it

    that reads:

"If a detective and a penguin take 1 minute

to run a block and a robot is as big as a

    block..."

The numbers flip the banner over and it

    reads:

    "Whose number is up?"

The numbers stick out their tongues.

    DETECTIVE SPREEA word problem. I

    hate nasty word

    problems.

    (muttering to

    himself)

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    24/51

Let's see, 1 minute times one

    block equals...um...carry the

    two...

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    25/51

    LOUIE

    The answer is US,

    Spree, US! ACK!

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    Not to worry, Louie.

    Spree is on it.

The little fractions surround Spree and

Louie. The Math-O-Matic limps up and stops,

    looming over them.

Spree reaches into the sack of balls and

starts pelting the little fractions and Math-

O-Matic with speed balls, knocking them for a

loop. He is enjoying himself and begins to

do some fancy moves while pitching balls

under a leg, behind his back and spinning

    around and letting fly.

The fractions are knocked off into the tree

tops and bushes around the baseball diamond

as Spree picks them off with pitches. The

    Math-O-Matic is forced back.

Louie is watching, eating some popcorn and

    cheering from the baseball stands.

The Math-O-Matic turns and heads for Louie in

    a rage.

Louis tosses his popcorn in the air and takes

off. He is running the bases as he is

pursued by the Math-O-Matic. It spews out

    numbers as it chases him.

The numbers scamper off and start uprooting

    trees.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    26/51

    Atta boy, Louie. Keep

    the Math-O-Matic busy.

    I called the chief.

    He should be on the

    way with a back-up.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    27/51

    LOUIE

    What am I, a robot-

    sitter?

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    Just keep that thing

    busy. I'll be rightback.

Spree disappears offscreen and returns with

    the rope.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    Here, catch.

He tosses one end of the rope to Louie who

catches it. Spree ties the other end of the

rope to the batting cage behind home plate.

    LOUIE

    Ack. What am I

    supposed to do with

    this?

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    C'mon Louie. Do your

    thing. Round the bases

    and slide. Slide!

Louie speeds up and in a blur, rounds the

bases, which wraps the rope around the legs

of the Math-O-Matic. He then slides into

    home base.

The Math-O-Matic falls, raising a cloud of

dust, its outstretched arms just short of

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    28/51

reaching Louie. Cogs and parts fall off as

springs pop out of the Math-O-Matic.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    29/51

    LOUIE

    Another job well done.

Spree and Louie shake hands and then look

    around.

The numbers had stopped tearing up the trees

and have surrounded Spree and Louie. The

little fractions are standing amongst them.

The circle of numbers start to close in.

    LOUIE

    Remind me to make a

    note to myself to

    never count my numbers

    before they're

    hatched.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    That's chickens.

    LOUIE

    Ack. Whatever.

    SFX: Helicopter

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    Chief!

    LOUIE

    Late as usual. Ack.

    Ack. Back! Back!

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    30/51

Louie takes on a marshal arts stance and is

ridiculously chopping at the air with his

hands as the numbers close in.

    UPSHOT ON HELICOPTER

The helicopter flies overhead, stops and

hovers above the baseball diamond. It is

dangling a giant magnet on a rope.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    31/51

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    Alright you numerical

    nemesis, you are about

    to be subtracted.

The magnetic pull lifts the numbers and the

Math-O-Matic off the ground and affixes them

to the magnet. They all dangle from the

    magnet, kicking and squirming.

    CHIEF

    (from the

    helicopter,

    talking

    through a

    bullhorn)

    Good job Detective

    Spree and Louie.

    We'll run these

    numbers by

    headquarters.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    (calling up

    to Chief)

    Roger, Chief.

    LOUIE

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    32/51

    I didn't know his name

    was Roger. Ack.

Spree looks at Louie like he's a dork.

    CUT TO:

    EXT. HEADQUARTERS DAY

The numbers are in handcuffs and the Math-O-

Matic is tied up and sitting on the ground.

Spree and Louie are standing before them.

The Math-O-Matic has its mouth taped shut

with duct tape. The fractions are in a wire

    fenced area.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    33/51

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    (holding up a

    roll of duct

    tape)

    I always knew this duct

tape would come in handy for

    something some day.

    LOUIE

    How do you find

    anything in that black

    hole you call a car

    trunk? Ack-Ack.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    (to the numbers)

Alright, you guys.Line up. You're going

    to get processed and

    then it's off to lock-

    up for you.

    The numbers form a line.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    OK, you guys. You!

    Single digits. Over

    there on the right. A

    3 stands in front.

    The single digits line up.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    You double digits,

    over there next to

    them.

He points to the left of the single digits.

The double digits line up. An 80 stands in

    front.

He points and the three digits line up on the

left next to the double digits. A "600"

    stands in front.

    DETECTIVE SPREE

    And you, loser.

You're the one andonly four digit

    number. Over there.

    C'mon, move it, move

    it.

He points to the left of the 100. It's a

    6,000.

  • 8/14/2019 The Adventures of Jacob Spreemans Daydreams

    36/51

    LOUIE

    Looks like you've

    sorted things out,

    Spree.

    DETECTIVE SPREENot just yet, Louie.

    Let's have some fun.

    (chuckles)

    OK, you guys. Your

    number's up. Divide

    into 36 groups.

The numbers scramble about in confusion,

grumbling, complaining and bumping into each

    other.

Spree and Louie laugh and slap hands.

CAMERA PULLS BACK as Spree and Louie continue

    to laugh

The image of Spree and Louie gets smaller

till we have an over the shoulder shot of

Jacob Spreeman looking at the loose leaf

paper with his drawing of Detective Spree and

Louie, who now are still drawings.
