Special thanks was given to the Altar Society for the meal, to the scholarship donors, and to all who helped with the Alumni. A moment of silence was held for the deceased alumni, followed by acknowledge-ment of military alumni past and present.

Results of the recent survey were dis-cussed and how it brought the needed help and some new ideas. Scholarships were presented to Kaylee Penne, Trent Braun and Evey Choat. Elaine Braun Zoucha and Kim Rutten Schilousky gave a report on the Cedar’s Rap-id Run and presented the Alumni with a $300 check for the scholarship fund. Elaine Braun Zoucha, along with help from Kim Rutten Schilousky, did an amazing job promoting and managing the race again this year. Lacey Ring Bittner won the $20 cash, Nathan Hiemer won a t-shirt, and Tracey Buettner and Brian Steinbruck both won free entries for next year’s run.

The morning weather was perfect and so were the wonder-ful volunteers. Thanks to Greger Graphics for the additional signs to help with safety, and Deputy Mike Mapel who helped slow the traffic near the Belgrade turn.

2013 was a record year for our scholarship fund! Thanks to your continuing generosity, we gave awards of $1,000 each to three of our graduating seniors. Our 2013 scholarship recipients were Kaylee Penne, Trent Braun, and Evey Choat. Kaylee Penne was a National Honor Society member and an American Red Cross volunteer. After graduation, she enrolled at the University of Nebraska at Kearney pursuing a respiratory ther-apy degree. She has always felt a need to help make a difference in the lives of others, and she feels drawn to respiratory therapy because of her experience with health problems, her own and in her family. Trent Braun was a National Honor Society member and an honor student. He is attending Northeast Community College in Norfolk. His major is Wind Energy Technology. Trent feels this is an interesting and exciting field with opportunities in many parts of the country. He hopes to begin his career with a job on a construc-tion crew so that he can learn every aspect of this growing field. Evey Choat was a National Honor Society member, an honor student, and an American Red Cross volunteer. She attends the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, Nebraska. She is interested in grazing livestock systems, plus agricultural, culi-nary, medical, and educational fields. She hopes to find a career that will involve many of her activities. Once again, a big thank you to the donors for your part in help-ing these young people reach their educational and career goals.

2013 Scholarship Winners:Kaylee Penne, Trent Braun, Evey Choat

2013 CRHS Alumni Scholarship Winners Update Kaylee Penne is majoring in Radiology at the University of Nebraska, Kearney. She recently spent a semester in Spiddal, Ireland as an exchange student. Trent Braun, was named to the Northeast Community College President and Dean’s Honor List with a perfect 4.0 average. Evey Choat was named to the Dean’s Honor Roll at Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.

Thanks a Million!

The Alumni Association extends a sincere thank you to all those who helped in any way to make the 2013 ban-quet and dance so much fun. Special thanks to Lois Zou-cha and St. Anthony’s Altar Society; photographer Bernie Auten; Bryce Molt for setting up the sound system; Marilyn Roan, those who helped fold and address the newsletter; gate attendants, Rusty Boyd, Sam Afrank, Warren Carlson & Tom Mahoney; and of course, all the wonderfully generous scholarship donors.

Alumni Duesare Very

Important

The Alumni Association membership dues are a very important part of keeping the association active. It is ex-tremely important that ALL ALUMNI pay the Annual Dues of $5.00.

This is true whether or not you attend the Reunion. Paying your dues assures you a copy of the Alumni Newslet-ter. Because of our account-ing system, only one year of dues can be accepted at a time. Any amount over $5.00 will be deposited into the Scholarship Fund.

2014 Polar Dip The Toma Rutten Memorial Polar Dip celebrated it’s 10th year on February 17, 2014. Sixty-seven brave people “dipped” in the frigid Cedar River. A Chili Cook-off and Price is Right Game at the Legion Club topped off the evening. Proceeds from the Dip support the Cedar Cares for Kids program.

Your ongoing support of the CRHS Alum-ni scholarship fund is wonderful! Last year’s donations set a record: $3,570, compared to $3,037 the previous year. There were big do-nations and small ones, and it all added up to scholarships of $1,000 each for three of the graduating seniors. The annual banquet and dance are great opportunities to reconnect with classmates, but in my mind, the scholarship fund is the most important thing we do. I’m proud to be a part of this incredible group. Thank you so much! I can hardly wait to see where your generosity will take us this year!

Cedar Rapids Press Last year, we ran an article about the Cedar Rapids Press having lost its status as a legal newspaper. As a re-sult it is no longer able to run legal notices, which is a loss of revenue for the Press and a source of inconvenience for Cedar. Legal items such as meeting notices and the proceedings of the village and school boards must now be published in the paper of one of the surrounding commu-nities, as we no longer have access to that kind of informa-tion in our local newspaper. The Press can regain its status as a legal newspa-per by maintaining a circulation of 300 or more for at least a year. Over the last year, circulation has vacillated from just above 300 to a little below that mark. One problem is that people forget to renew when their subscription ex-pires, but the Press is now sending renewal notices, and that seems to help. If you’re not currently receiving the paper, you might want to consider subscribing. The cost for Boone, Nance, and Greeley counties is $24 per year. The remain-der of Nebraska is $28, and the out of state rate is $32. The Press office is open Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 10 am to 5 pm, or subscriptions can be sent to Cedar Rapids Press, PO Box 157, Cedar Rapids, NE 68627.

LAST YEAR’S SURVEY RESULTSThe Cedar Rapids High School Alumni is alive and well! You may remember that in last year’s newsletter we expressed some serious concerns about finding volunteers for the alumni committee to manage the work of the banquet and dance, the newsletter, the scholarship fund, etc.

If you attended last year’s banquet, or if you follow our Facebook page, you have already heard about the results of last year’s survey. Some 24 people volunteered to help in some capacity. We now have 3 new people on the committee and a list of folks who we hope to bring into the fold as the need arises.

It was gratifying to see how many of you appreciate the alumni and want to see it continue, even though you may not be able to serve on the committee at this time. Many were agreeable with the idea of having a specific class handle the banquet arrangements each year.

There were a variety of suggestions for strengthening or streamlining the alumni, including:- Holding the reunions every other year, or even every 5 years.- Eliminate the newsletter and send a simple postcard notice about the banquet.- Combine the reunion banquet with another community event.- Eliminate the dance.

Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to answer the survey. Because of the wonderful response to our call for volunteers, we will not have to curtail any of our current activities at this point in time. In fact, we hope this year’s reunion will be bigger and better than ever! This year the banquet will be at noon. We hope you’ll make plans to join us, even if it’s not your honor year.

The merger with Spalding Public Schools is set to begin with the 2014 – 2015 school year. As a result, we have some decisions to make.

The combined schools of Cedar Rapids and Spalding will be known as Riverside Public Schools. The 2015 class will be the first class consisting of students from both Cedar and Spalding.

In talking with folks from other towns who have experienced school mergers, it seems that most alumni groups welcome all graduates from the newly organized school no matter where they live.

Perhaps the biggest question involves the scholarship fund. Do we award scholar-ships based only on merit, regardless of the student’s home town?

We’ve had some preliminary discussion with representatives of the Spalding Alumni

Association. They have the same questions, and neither side has made any decisions.

There will, of course, be no change this year. We are still an independent school, and our awards will be given to graduates of Cedar Rapids Public Schools.

One suggestion has been to continue “as is” for the first year of the merger, with each group giving scholarships to students from their respective towns. This would give everyone time to poll their membership, build some collaborative relationships, and work on possible agreements for a joint effort in the future.

So what do you think? Would you like to see the scholarship funds kept separateindefinitely? Would you prefer that we do joint scholarships open to students of both towns ASAP? Please let us know your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of the dues/banquet reservation form on page 15.
