KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 11 - 2021 Thursday 29 th April, 2021 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT As mentioned last week, we held a whole school assembly (the first in 18 months) to commemorate Anzac Day. All the students are to be commended for their respectful observation to our school student leaders who led the assembly which included the reading of a Banjo Patterson poem, the Ode of Remembrance and the sharing of personal photos and medals of family members of individual staff who have or are, serving in the armed forces. Each class had prepared for the commemoration with activities around ANZAC day, and the creation of a wreath. Please view the display of all wreaths in the main building foyer (next to the trophy cabinet at the top of the ramp) Thank you to Deb Layton and the student leaders for planning and conducting the assembly. On Sunday, you may have seen 60 minutes or heard elsewhere on the media about the current, prominent issue of consent and the need to support students to build and manage safe and respectful relationships. As part of the curriculum, the Respectful Relationships initiative of the Department of Education, supports schools to promote and model respect, positive attitudes and behaviours and teaches students how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence. The whole school approach to Respectful Relationships helps to embed a culture of respect and gender equality across the entire school community, and aims to build students’ social, emotional and positive relationship skills. Learning activities help students learn and practice social skills and apply them in a positive way to learning, life and relationships (including understanding consent). Our school also provides sexuality education to our senior students as part of the Health curriculum through provision by Djerriwarrh health services. At the other end of the school, our Foundation students will soon participate in the Australian Early Developmental Census, which is a checklist of over 100 questions completed by the Foundation teachers. The AEDC checklist looks at five areas of child development: physical health and wellbeing social competence emotional maturity language and cognitive skills and communication skills and general knowledge PRINCIPAL’S REPORT The aims of collecting the information are to: help communities to understand how their children are developing by the time they reach school age help schools, local agencies and early childhood professionals to work together to improve the outcomes for all children in the community. Summary data from the analysis of the census will be available to the community based on whole groups of children in a way that means no-one will be able to identify individual children. Following the recent practice tests for the forthcoming NAPLAN (National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy), students in Year 3 and 5 have been regularly practising the skill of identifying what a question is asking and articulating the strategies they would use in answering the question or solving the problem. The NAPLAN assessments will be held on Tuesday 11th May (Writing), Wednesday 12th May (Reading), Thursday 13th May (Language Conventions) and Friday 14th May (Numeracy). ~ Learning Together NOTIFICATION AND APPROVAL REGARDING EXTENDED ABSENCES FOR FAMILY HOLIDAYS OR EVENTS We appreciate that families from time to time may be absent for family holidays or events. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As mentioned last week, we held a whole school assembly (the first in 18 months) to commemorate Anzac Day.

The AEDC checklist looks at five areas of child development:

physical health and wellbeing

social competence

emotional maturity

language and cognitive skills and

communication skills and general knowledge

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING IN THE

VISUAL ARTS 2021

In term one, year 3 and 4 students learnt about the French artist Henri Rousseau. They learnt about all the challenges, teasing and rejection he endured through most of his artistic life and students were inspired by his resilience to go on with painting, believing in his own abilities, even when the “experts” did not. His resilience was rewarded with his artwork being exhibited around the world. Students were also inspired by his jungle paintings and they created their own jungle artwork featuring a tiger. They were completely engaged in creating the many facets which made up the complete collage, including painting leaves with primary colours, learning to draw a tiger, assembling their collage by cutting shapes, gluing and overlapping, resulting in a three-dimensional artwork. A brilliant job all.

Year 5 and 6 students have begun term 2 with some pencil drawings of still-life objects. They were able to bring the humble apple to life through their carefully honed drawing skills, turning a flat shape into a three-dimensional form. An impressive attempt by all. I’m looking forward to seeing their final artwork.

Later this year, you’ll be able to see the students work in the KPS Art Show which will feature the wonderful art they will create this year.
