“Bits and Pieces of Info to Make Life on the Ranch Easier to Manage” October 28, 2010  Answers to Questions on the Ranch  A: For the past two years, students at ACA have participated in Operation Christmas Child. The program provides an opportunity for parents and teachers to talk with students about the abundance of material blessings we have here in the United States despite how little we may think we have at the present time. Each elementary class at ACA will have two shoe boxes, one for a little girl and one for a little boy, and students (and their parents) will sign up to bring goods such as new toothbrush- es, underwear, brushes, toys, etc. The sign-up sheet will be available at conferences and will be left up outside the classroom afterwards. Each family is asked to provide two of one  good from the list of items needed for each shoe box. Please send your items as soon a s you have them available! We will package every-  thing together and will present it to our area Operation Christmas Child director in early December. I hope this project will be a tremen- dous opportunity to teach the kids about gen- erosity and love for others!  A: Picture retakes will be held on Wednesday, November 17th. If your child was absent or if you would like another picture taken on that day, please mark your calendars and look for more information to come in the weeks ahead.  What’s Happening Around Town The last week of October has seemed like a whirlwind, literally, but the excitement of the up- coming holiday season is a welcome ray of warm light and hope amidst the falling temperatures and busy schedules! It has bee n a joy to reflect on the  growth of the students thus far, and I trust you will be encouraged as you hear about your child’s progress and will be filled with anticipation about his or her continued progress in coming months! The students are making great strides in their abilities to combine letters and sounds into whole words, and it is my goal to begin reading circles  very shortly in the upcoming mon th. In order to help students be better prepared, I will be sending home blend cards and ideas for practice with the cards at the end of next week, so please keep your eyes peeled! In the mean time, I encourage you to  give your child practice sounding out and spelling short words like hot, dog, etc. The students like  to be a detective and “discover” how to spell words and then write them on a secret tablet with a picture of the word next to it! Also, consider spending time discussing rhyming words! One of  the most important and best ways you can help your child is to read! READ LOTS to them! The students have been introduced to num- bers through 19, and they enjoy using cereal, toys, and a whole variety of different materials to form numbers! Any opportunity to practice forming numbers in the teens fa mily would be great! In sci- ence and history we are studying farmers, food, and how food gets to our table at the restaurant! It is great to put the process together as a whole! As we enter the second half of the semester, we covet your prayers for strength and continued  growth in all areas! Thanks so much! Miss Hult
