S T E WA R D S H I P N E W S 3

"What can I do to be a good steward and disciple of Jesus?"

The Book of Leviticus from which our First Reading comes is the third book in the Old Testament. Its name in part comes from the Levites, who were the tribe to which Aaron belonged. Historically Aaron is considered to be the one from whom priests are descended. However, the Bible offers instructions to all of us, not just to priests. In today’s reading from Leviticus, God says to Moses that he should teach the people this: “Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy.” There is no way, of course, that we can be as holy as God is. God is divine, not human, and thus His Holiness is above and way beyond our capabilities. What God is saying to us though is that we do need to strive for holi-ness. We often speak of our call to holiness and how we can try to achieve that. One way is to embrace steward-ship and all it entails as a way of life. Will that make us holy like the Lord? No, but it does mean that we need to comprehend that it is God and God’s wisdom we must embrace and follow. Holiness for us means we need to attempt to separate ourselves from those things and thoughts and ideas which can be viewed as not holy in the Eyes of God. Yes, it is impossi-ble for us, but yet that is what we must try to do.

CHARITY & DEVELOPMENT APPEAL

The annual Charity and Development Appeal (CDA) is underway. Thank you to everyone who has made their pledge. Each and every gift is im-portant, no matter how big or small. Our parish goal is 100% participation and $100,000. For those who have not yet made a pledge, please do so today! These programs and services reach beyond the boundaries of any one parish to all

of our community. Support works of mercy in our Diocese. Make a pledge and fill out your donor card today or donate online at dphx.org/cda, and be an instrument of God’s love and mercy through your gift to the CDA.

NEW THIS YEAR: The parish can no longer take bank account or credit card information for your CDA gift. To protect your per-sonal financial information, ACH and credit card gifts must be made through the CDA online giving portal at dphx.org/cda. TEXT TO GIVE - Text the amount of your gift to 602-313-0309. Giving this way is fast, easy and secure!

Thank you for donation of fleece blankets for the homeless. We will continue to collect them through February. Blankets should be the size that will fit into a back pack. Collection bins are located outside the doors of church, or drop off at the parish office.

BLANKETS FOR THE HOMELESS

The Mass … A Conversation with God

Each weekend we have the opportunity to listen to the word of God in Scripture and listen to a reflection on Scripture in a short homily. We invite you to prepare for your conversation with God this coming weekend by reading beforehand the Scriptures that will be used in the Mass and by lis-tening to a homily reflective of those Scripture passages.

You can find this on a web site designed by Fr. Boyle. It is available on an iPhone, iPad or PC. Use your brows-er to access: www.homilyweek.com.

† SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

FEBRUARY 19, 2017 7th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME "Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow." Today Jesus continues the

powerful teaching of his Sermon on the Mount. Typical of this famous sermon, here he urges us to see things in a new way, specifically regarding situations and people who bother us. First, he tells us not to seek revenge. Instead, we are to demonstrate incredible generosi-ty. Then, he instructs us to "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." These instructions don't come naturally to most of us. We are much more inclined to want to get even with those who cause us to suffer, and to wish ill for those who have hurt us. But Jesus proposes anoth-er way. In truth, what good does it do to seek revenge or foster hate? It only continues the cycle of evil. Jesus encourages behavior that will stop the cycle short. He gives us a model that--although it may not change the heart of our "enemies"--will nonetheless change OUR hearts for the better. When pressed into service for one mile, if we voluntarily go two, then WE are the ones whose attitude and experi-ence is certain to change. Instead of spending the length of that one mile cursing and complaining, we spend the length of two enjoying a surprising kind of freedom: "I chose to do this," instead of "I am being forced to do this." When we practice the generosity of giving more than we are asked, and the charity of praying for those who persecute us, we will find ourselves in a position to transcend the trouble. It sets us free to not be mastered by the evil around us. Thus, we are able to help end the cycle of evil and begin a new cycle of love and peace.

† LENTEN FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and absti-nence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of absti-nence.

For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

Members of the Eastern Catholic Churches are to observe the particular law of their own sui iuris Church.

A Reflection on Lenten Fasting

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.

SMG OUTREACH COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Catholic Charities is the only licensed Catholic adoption agency in the Diocese. We bring our Catholic identity and values to the miracle of creating new families through infant adoption. We have many families on our waiting list BECAUSE they want to adopt through Catholic Charities, but we simply do not have enough infants for our families waiting to adopt. This seems hard to believe when we know that there are so many women experiencing unplanned pregnancies. Our pregnancy counseling program provides free, life-affirming support to those experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. We go to the clients, wherever they might be, and help them explore the life-affirming choices of parenting or place-ment with a loving adoptive family. If parenting, we help them to develop the skills and resources they need to parent successfully. If placing for adoption, we help them decide whether they would like an open or closed adoption and they choose the family. Our support is life-long for birth and adoptive parents as well as baby. No one should experience an unplanned pregnancy without compassionate, life-affirming support. For information contact [email protected]. Our counselors are available 7 days a week, toll-free on our pregnancy hotline 1.888.818.4445.

MISSION OF MERCY MEDICAL CENTER

WE ARE HERE FOR YOU — ALL LIFE IS A BLESSING!

Mission of Mercy Mobile Medical Clinic has been serving the uninsured since 1997 in Phoenix, Maryvale, Mesa and Avondale. We are in need of vol-unteer doctors, nurses and bilingual interpreters to help at our clinics on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednes-days and Thursdays. For more information please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Ana, at 602-861-2233 [email protected]

The Church promotes unity among all the followers of Christ which flows from our common baptism and seeks the fullness of unity which is a condition of evangelization. The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Division damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature. Thus we are asked to pray faithfully that unity will be achieved by those separated. The Church of Phoenix is called to participate in the quest for unity by promoting ecumenical and inter-religious relations as mandated by Vatican II. The Church has urged the faithful to seek unity with her separated Christian brothers and sisters and respect the truth found in all religions. It is essential that each parish as part of its mission seek ways to further unity with all Christians and non-Christians. As part of this call we at St. Maria Goretti Parish join the Diocese of Phoenix in this quest. Those interested in furthering this ministry please contact Tom Brady 480-745-5080.

Honoring our Presidents

Presidents’ Day falls on the third Monday of February and is both a federal and state holiday. The day marks the celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday (February 12) and George Washington’s birthday (February 22). No school, no mail and typically no banking. Other than a day off for a portion of the population and stores holding special Presi-dents’ Day sales, there are very little observances or traditions sur-rounding this holiday.

Lincoln and Washington are remembered as two of our nation’s great-est presidents because of the adversities they encountered and the positive impact they made upon our nation. You and I are called to pray for our president and leaders of our nation. They face tremendous chal-lenges and your prayers can move them to bring godly impact upon our nation.

1 Timothy 2:1-4 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2) for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3) This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4) who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
