S Molton & Chulmleigh District Children’s Centre At the Children’s Centre we are always looking for ways to get parents more involved in the way we do things. If you have any thoughts on things you might like to see happen for your under-fives please call Sharon Davidson who is on our parent involvement forum. Just a reminder that our Stay and Play group runs on a Monday 9.45-11.30am. This is run by volunteers who work really hard to keep it going. There is always a wide range of activities for you and your children to enjoy to-gether and it is a safe environment for your little ones to explore and learn through play. Becoming Respectful: a course for 16-24 year old men who want to improve their behaviour in intimate relationships. A 12 week programme of 2 hour weekly sessions encouraging an under-standing of a positive, respectful and nurturing relationship. The course will enable you to identi-fy the difficulties, offer solutions, recognise the benefits of a respectful relationship and develop strategies to change. Please call 01769 579615 for more information.

Our next event is a Spring Activity afternoon of Thursday 2nd June from 12noon-3pm.There will be a variety of activities for children to enjoy, in-cluding pony rides for anyone age 4 or above. If the weather is not friendly, everything will take place under cover. Some of you may have seen on local TV news that Michael Woodcock, a retired solicitor, is plan-ning an ambitious feat for this summer. Having sat on a pony for the first time at the age of 69 at the Exmoor Pony Centre, he now aims to take part in the Exmoor Pony Society’s Working Hunter Class at Dunster Country Fair on Wednesday 27th July when he will be 73. Please support him. Exmoor Pony Centre is open to visitors between 10am and 4pm on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday throughout the summer.

HM QUEEN’S OFFICIAL 90th BIRTHDAY falls on 11th June. Lots of towns and villages have special events over that weekend. Those that we have been told about are listed in the lo-cal events columns. Enjoy!

Happy Birthday, your Majesty!

The 2016 South Molton Vintage Rally will be held on 4th and 5th June at Combsland Cross, South Molton EX36 3NW. With Exmoor as a picturesque backdrop spend a leisurely few hours soaking up the nostalgic atmosphere of a bygone era with a glimpse of how things used to be. At the Rally dedicated enthusiasts will be show-ing their lovingly maintained machines. There are over 300 exhibits listed in the programme: cars, motor and pedal cycles, steam engines tractors and machinery. There will be much to see, a craft and model marquee, stalls offering a range of goods and items of interest for all ages, children’s rides and amusements. With a range of delicious food on offer enjoy a cup of tea, something to eat from or perhaps a delicious Hocking icecream. In the working area will be demonstrations showing how some of agricultural work was done before the advancement of modern technology. For more information telephone 01271 378019 or 07974 026060

ARMED FORCES EXHIBITION 23rd-25th JUNE Following a very successful event in 2015, this annual Exhibition returns to Barnstaple this year, from Thursday 23rd to Saturday 25th June. Sat-urday’s events are fully open to the public, whilst activities on the Thursday and Friday are for local schools. This annual highlight has received a fur-ther boost following its move from Bideford to Pil-ton Community College in Barnstaple last year. Among the expected additions for 2016 is a per-formance by the Military Wives Choir. This free event, led by North Devon Veterans As-sociation and organised in partnership with a range of other organisations, charts military histo-ry through displays of equipment and memorabil-ia as well as live demonstrations. Forces veter-ans bring the displays to life and answer visitors’ questions. For more details, contact Will Austin, Barnstaple Town Clerk, will.austin@barnstaple towncouncil. co.uk, 01271 373311

William Vaggers My dad is 78 years old and lives in Bristol. He grew up in Exeter and at the age of 6 was evacu-ated to a farm in South Molton during the Second World War. He has been back to South Molton a few times to try and find the farm but has had no joy. The area may have changed and he was very young. All he knows is that the farmer was called William Vaggers or Vaggars and he had two young daughters named Evelyn and Marga-ret. He is always talking about finding this farm. Does the name Vaggers mean anything to you? Please contact [email protected]

BMX Track North Devon Council has agreed to allocate Sec-tion 106 money to the BMX project in South Mol-ton Community Woodland, which will be man-aged by South Molton Town Council. The Town Council is a match-funding this. The Mayor of South Molton, Councillor David Goodman, said, "This project has been an aspira-tion of the Town Council for several years, so we are really glad this is now coming to fruition. Young people have been very supportive and we look forward to providing the track for them."

LOCAL PLAN North Devon Council and Tor-ridge District Council councillors have a policy for starter homes to be included in the North Devon and Torridge Local Plan, having taken into account public consultation response. Councillors also decided not to include a new policy for wind energy development, following a large number of representations from the local community and also because the government no longer requires this policy. The Local Plan shows development planned for the area and where it should be located. Once adopted, the main docu-ment will be used to make decisions on planning applications. A report which proposes the plan be submitted to the Secretary of State for independ-ent examination was also endorsed.

THE FARMING COMMUNITY NETWORK

Contrary to popular belief, a farmer’s life is not all fields of golden corn beneath a blue, cloudless sky. It is a twenty four hours a day, seven days a week occupation in fine weather and foul, through good times and bad and with no week-ends off: the cows won’t milk themselves. Like everyone else, farmers suffer financial wor-ries, family difficulties, bereavement, illness and accident yet, on top of that, they have to deal with animal health and welfare, government red tape, bad harvests and falling prices; the role of the Farming Community Network is to provide practical and pastoral support to farmers and to farming families at times of difficulty and stress. With some 390 volunteers throughout England and Wales, of which 30 are in Devon, FCN will visit the farm and walk with the farmer as he or she finds a way forward and back to a normal way of life. It doesn’t matter if this takes a few weeks, or months or even years – an FCN volun-teer will be there to provide support. There is a telephone Helpline which is available from 7am until 11pm every day of the year and an e-mail address for those who prefer. We are also taking part in a Dementia Research Project and want to speak to farming families where there is a diagnosis of dementia. Don’t struggle on in silence, ask how we can help. Benefits overpayments North Devon Council reminds local people who claim Housing Benefit

or Council Tax Support to report changes in cir-cumstances, as it could affect their benefits. The Council is using bin lorries and posters to push the message "when life changes, your benefits change too". So many things can affect your ben-efits - moving house, having a baby, pension changes, people moving into or out of your home ... Changes can mean that your benefits go up as well as down. Please let us know as soon as something changes so we can adjust your payments. It can be very worrying to find out you have been overpaid and have to pay that money back. It's much better for everyone if we can get your benefits right, from the start. For more information and to notify the Council of your changes go to www.northdevon.gov.uk/benefits, call 01271 388877 or pick up a leaflet and form at the Amory Centre, South Molton.

Chelle Hancock has retired from the S Molton Committee of Can-cer Research UK, having been a very active and dedicated member and Secretary of the Commit-tee for 40 years. She helped raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for research into the cure and treatment of cancers. We will greatly miss her hard work, enthusiasm and ideas which have been a huge part of our success over the years
