"San Antonio Painters II" 9/6 6:00PM

Back in April, ARTnews Deputy Editor Barbara A. MacAdamjuried and curated “San Antonio Painters,” an exhibition thattasked the revered writer and critic with hand-picking eightdiverse local artists (Andrew Anderson, Roberta Buckles,Marcus Garza, Carmen Cartiness Johnson, ElizabethMcDonald, Sammy Velasquez, Sandy Whitby, and RachelZiegler) from a pile of more than 130 applicants. Due to theenthusiastic response to Blue Star’s open call for submissions,MacAdam signed on for a sequel. Featuring works by BrysonBrooks, Ana Fernandez, Chrys Grummert, Megan Harrison,Chris Sauter, Corbin Spring, Cornelia White Swann, and JasonWillome, chapter two is poised to upstage the first.Place: Blue Star Contemporary Art Center

If you’ve always thought your family was the world’s mostdysfunctional, a trip to August: Osage County is just what thedoctor ordered. Penned by Oklahoma-born playwright/actorTracy Letts, the ultra-dark Pulitzer- and Tony-winning comedynods to tragic Camille via Violet Weston — a bitter pill-poppingmatriarch with cancer and a missing husband. With her entireclan assembled, mama can’t resist the opportunity to unpackthe family’s most toxic baggage. When it debuted on Broadwayin 2008, Charles Isherwood praised the “turbo-chargedtragicomedy” as “flat-out, no asterisks and withoutqualifications, the most exciting new American play Broadwayhas seen in years.” A film adaptation starring Meryl Streep andJulia Roberts is in the works.Place: Sheldon Vexler Theatre

Born in the U.K. and raised in L.A., Carmelita Rossanna Fordpicked up her first guitar at 11 and was recruited for the all-female band The Runaways at 16. Along with Joan Jett,Cherie Currie, Sandy West, and Jackie Fox, Ford learned therock business fast — sped along questionably by manager KimFowley, who marketed the teens as sex-kittens serving “jail-bait rock” until a crash and burn circa 1979. As a solo artist,Ford picked up steam with 1984’s Dancin’ on the Edge andestablished herself as The Queen of Metal with 1988’s Lita.Best known for the hard-rocking hits “Close My Eyes Forever”(a duet with Ozzy Osbourne) and “Kiss Me Deadly,” Ford iscurrently touring in support of 2011’s Living Life Like aRunaway, an album inspired by a truce with her formerbandmates and a messy divorce from Nitro frontman JimGillette. An inspiring reaction to the 31,000 lives lost to drug-relatedviolence in Mexico between 2006 and 2010, photographerDiego Huerta’s “31K Portraits for Peace” seeks to counteractthe negative impact of that number through art and the mantra“la paz comienza creyendo” (peace starts by believing). Theproject took flight in 2011 with “La Huasteca,” an origami doveHuerta photographed in the hands of 31,000 peoplethroughout Mexico’s 32 states. Once realized, Huerta installed100 of the portraits in the streets of Ciudad Juárez,Matamoros, and San Fernando. Now three additional doves(“Maria Bonita,” “La Zapoteca,” and “La Choquita”) trot theglobe and send back messages of peace from afar. Mexic-Arte’s Claudia Zapata curates photographs by Huerta andproject partner Daniela Gutiérrez in conjunction withFotoseptiembre.Place: UTSA Satellite Space
