According to a 2013 study done by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Americans work on average 41 hours a week and put in 1,800 hours of work per year, which is the fourth most of any country behind Mexico, Korea and Chile. Also, 30 per- cent of Americans work 45 hours or more a week. The average workweek in Britain is 38 hours. It’s 37 hours in Germany and 36 in France. Daniel S. Hamermesh, an economics professor at Royal Holloway, University of London, who is also the Sue Killam Professor in the Foundation of Economics at the University of Texas in Austin, penned an opinion piece that was published in Sunday’s edi- tion of the Houston Chronicle. Hamermesh believes that Americans should be working fewer hours and enjoying the fruits of their labor more, but on Labor Day, people in Huntsville said working more than 40 hours is necessary because of the country’s economic stand- ing. “I think we are in a situation where people have to work longer hours for less pay to make ends meet,” said Scott Kaukonen, a professor in the English department at Sam Houston State University. “The divide between people with higher incomes and people who earn lower incomes is signifi- cant in this country. Many peo- ple see less of the benefits of their workload. Lots of people have to work hours that are incovenient for their families.” Paul McGee Jr., who works in marketing for Silverleaf Resorts in Conroe, added, “I think work- ing 40 hours is not enough. Patrick Nelson, 60, was killed when 37-year-old John Ashley drove his 1982 Chevrolet pick- up through the side of the Nelson’s home, according to the investigating officer. Patrick Nelson sustained fatal head injuries as a result of the crash. Teresita Nelson, 46, was treated by local EMS and trans- ported to Huntsville Memorial Hospital. “Our preliminary investiga- tion showed that Ashley was traveling north on FM 2550 when he approached the inter- section of FM 1696 at an unsafe speed,” said Trooper Floyd Garner of the Texas Department of Public Safety. “He then pro- ceeded to drive off the road and into the bedroom of the Nelson residence, knocking both into Time to get back to work, everybody.
