This school year marks my 20th as amember of the PACA staff. It has been a distinctprivilege and tremendous blessing to be part ofthis school since the early 1990's and to haveserved with so many godly men and women. Icontinue to be amazed at God's goodness andHis ability to use PACA to impact lives for Hiskingdom.

Through the fifty-five years that PACAhas existed, the school has continually soughtto serve our students through the lenses of aChristian worldview. In this service, the schooltries to communicate to its students, parents

NURTURING HEARTS. DEVELOPING MINDS. EDUCATING FOR ETERNITY.

and those that come into contact with the PACAcommunity what the school's mission, visionand core values represent.

While these three components are a keyrepresentation as to who we are as a school, itwas felt that an addition of a short, concisetagline would be beneficial. These shortphrases are distinctive and easily remembered, and speak to what the organization values.

Through work with a variety ofconstituents within the PACA community, theBoard of Directors has approved the followingtaglines to be associated with PACA:

NURTURING HEARTSDEVELOPING MINDS

EDUCATING FOR ETERNITY

These seven words are the springboardto understanding what type of school PACA isand what our staff sets out to do througheducating all of its students. Each representscomponents of our mission, vision and corevalues and culminate in the last tagline,

"Educating for Eternity", emphasizing that whilewe prepare our students for excellence in thisworld, our ultimate goal for them is the eternalsecurity they can receive through Christ'ssalvation.

While they are just seven words, whatthey bring to mind when attached to a schoolcan be incredibly powerful. I am excited thatwith the support of the PACA staff, its parentsand other community partners, we can worktogether to nurture students' hearts, helpdevelop their minds and guide them tounderstand and accept God's perfect plan tospend eternity with Him.

We had 42 college visits oncampus this semester! We also received agroup of 8 Christian colleges. They were able totalk to PACA students in 7th -12th grades , tellingthem about the benefits of a ChristianEducation.

Representatives from college admissionoffices visited PACA to present information toprospective students and parents. There areseveral benefits of college rep visits for ourPACA students.

College representatives meet withinterested students in small groups to discusstopics such as the academic programs, campuslife, financial aid and admission procedures oftheir college. They also answer students'

questions. Students can also let the collegeknow they are seriously interested. Many of therepresentatives are also admission officersfrom the college, so students have a uniqueopportunity to make contact with a person whomay be evaluating their application in thefuture.

Next semester, we will have more visitsand the Linden College fair. We will keep ourcommunity posted about these important visits.

The third graders presented theirassembly during the opening program. MissKierstead was Miss Ladybug for the day. Mr.Rugg shared about some of his favorite books.

There were lots of activities for theelementary students. In the gym, students

participated in buggy games. They playedgames on buggy websites in the computerlab. The music room hosted a spider storywith special musical instruments. In our

decorated elementary library, they listenedto some buggy stories. Students made somebuggy crafts in the art room and in Dona AnaLucia's room, they listened to a Brazilianstoryteller.

Miss Kierstead and Mrs. Morosov madesome butterfly cookies for our morningsnacks.

Throughout the month, we had severalspecial activities. We had book week, aspecial speaker who came and showed usbugs he has collected and studied, as well asa dress up day at the end of the readingcontest.

We got to ask questions to the authorof the book, Defending the Line: The David

Luiz Story, written by Alex Carpenter, a PACAalumnus from 2004. Mrs. Laurie Carpentershared her English translation of a Brazilianbook, A Bola e Goleiro, in our closing chapel.

Students read throughout the monthof October. Students were able to earn prizesfor each week that they read - bookmarks, plastic bugs, pencils/erasers and a candybutterfly.

For those who read every week andremembered to bring their paper signed eachweek, we celebrated by eating ice cream caketogether.

My desire is that students have caughtthe "reading bug" and will continue readingeven though the contest is over.

120 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

News from the Secondary Program by Mr. Nelson Dewey, Secondary Principal

One of the requirements for graduatingfrom PACA is that students complete 120 hours ofcommunity service. The purpose is to encouragestudents to develop a heart for serving othersand to give them an opportunity to discover theirgifts and talents in ministry. The activities mustmeet the following requirements:• Be beneficial to the school, church, missionwork or community.• Not be part of any type of personal fundraiser.• Be accomplished with an attitude of service.• Does not include responsibilities to one'simmediate family.

Silvano Kubo, our campus pastor, organizes an outreach day each semester inwhich kids help in various ministries associatedwith the school. Some students help at church, others tutor or babysit. The kids have foundmany other unique ways to serve the community.Maria Saldaña, a tenth grader, worked with

Projeto Sonhar Acordado where she spent a dayplaying games and hanging out with a youngunder-privileged girl. Daiana Ko (Senior) andCeline Lee (Junior) served food and washeddishes with Sociedade Pequeno Jesus. Bea Soldi,Jonathan Dunn and Rafael Rugg went to Ilha doCardoso to distribute Christmas presents andBibles to people living in small villages. 120hours of service seems like a daunting task, butwhen students approach it with creativity and aheart of service, it can bring great joy to thestudents and those they serve.

This year, our basketball teams werevery successful, not only in our São PauloHigh School League (SPHSL) but also at theBig 8 Tournament. Our boys´ team did not reach thesemi-finals in the SPHSL but achieved 2nd

place at the Big 8 tournament, fighting hardand only losing to Graded by a few points.

Our girls´ team had an undefeatedrecord in the SPHSL, allowing us to host the

finals and gain the victory. This is the 4th yearin a row that our girls´ basketball team wonthe SPHSL. At the Big 8 tournament, our girlsmet their first defeat of the season againstASA for a few points in the first game, butpicked themselves up and went on to win the

finals against the same team; receiving the 1st

place medal and trophy.

Development Office Update

Thank you for helping us surpassour fundraising goal to help buy theequipment needed to provide a heatedswimming pool. The cost of buying andinstalling solar panels and four heatexchangers is estimated at R$110.000.Through generous donations from parents, alumni and students through the Walkathon,we raised R$131.000! This success willimprove the water temperature of ourswimming pool to make it more comfortablefor our students.

PRESCHOOL - MAKING FRIENDS - MAKING BROWNIES - HAVING FUN

Life in Preschool by Mrs. Julia Dewey, Preschool Coordinator

On Tuesday, October 14, the pre-school had a Children's Day celebration withsome new friends that we invited to PACAfrom the Arca das Crianças. We enjoyedplaying with our new friends on thetrampoline and bouncy house and ball pit.We also had our faces painted like butterfliesand superheroes and animals. Our schoollibrary, Mrs. Serafini, came and read us astory. It was a great day and some of ourmoms came to play with us too!

We enjoyed special activities tocommemorate Children's Day throughoutone week in October.● On Wednesday, we had fun wearing dress-

up clothes to school!

● On Thursday, we loved wearing ourpajamas to school and hearing bedtimestories.

● On Friday, we made brownies to share at anafternoon picnic.

During the end of October, we plantedcarrot and lettuce seeds, watering them andwatching them grow! Some of our seedshave started to sprout! We are excited to seethem grow bigger and bigger!

This semester, we learned aboutsharing with our friends and family. Invitingthe children from Arca das Crianças gave us aunique opportunity to share our time and ourtoys with new friends. We also learned aboutthe world God made, and planting seeds and

watching them grow has helped us to understanda little bit more about the cycle of life and theblessings God gives us.

Some of our pre-school students told usabout what they like at school.

Isabella said, "Eu gosto de brincar, naptime, PE, library, go to my house, and I like mybackpack.”

Emily said, "I like to read story, makefoods, make groups, gosto da mesa com buracos(the water table)."

Isaac said, "I like play, eat, show and tell, puppet.”

Arthur said, "Gosto de ler livros dosanimais, do leão.”

Aline said, "Gosto do Apple TV porqueadoro ouvir as músicas.”
