DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY VIDEO PRESENTATION
As part of the observance of the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, St. Cletus Catholic Church will be showing the PBS documentary “Slavery By Another Name” based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning book. The film will be shown in the St. Cletus Parish Hall on Mon-day, January 21, 2019 at 7:00 pm (2705 Zumbehl Rd, St. Charles MO). This film challenges one of Americans’ most cherished as-sumptions: the belief that slavery in this country ended with the Emancipation Proclamation. The film tells how even as chattel slavery came to an end in the South in 1865, thousands of African Americans were pulled back into forced labor. It explores the little-known story of the labor practices and laws that effectively created a new form of slavery in the South that persisted into the 20th century. Laurence Fishburne narrates. Following the video there will be small group discussions and an opportunity to consider how St. Cletus Peace & Justice Min-istry and Parish Council plan to promote racial justice and har-mony in the coming year. For further information, please call the church office at (636) 946-6327.
Come Holy Spirit!
St. Paul said to pray always. Christ said whenever two or more are gathered in my name, there I am also. The faith community of St. Charles Borromeo is offering a way to increase your prayer me. If you would like to join other parishioners in praying more o en, please join us on the first and third Tuesday, in the church from 7:00 to 8:30pm. For more informa on please contact Cathy Espinosa at 636-578-0154 or email at [email protected].
The St. Vincent De Paul Society is asking for your help in managing our donation bins located on the lower park-ing lot. The donations in these bins are collected once per week on Wednesday, however this weeks collection was delayed due to the holiday. Unfortunately the bins were packed so full this past week that the doors were left ajar. As a result, from the recent rains everything in the bins became wet and had to be thrown away. The bins are otherwise water tight, but not when the doors are left ajar. Please be sure the bin doors are properly closed after dropping off your donations. Your donations are so very important to us and our neighbors in need. We regret losing this past weeks donations. Thank you for your unfailing generosity and cooperation.
CRHP was a life changing weekend for me. It was encouraging to read the Bible and "Let Go, Let God" take over in my life. Hearing the experiences of my CRHP Sisters and how their Faith helped them sur-vive their challenges help me see my prayer life in an entirely different way. This is an experience that no one should miss out on. Treat yourself to a weekend with the Lord and your New CRHP Sis-ters/Brothers. Barbara Bott

Thank you to the many generous, caring parishioners at Borromeo who brought in at least 75 coats for adults and children––most gently used, others brand new––as well as hats, scarves, and gloves. What a blessing that has been to the families and individuals being served by the Immigrant and Refugee Ministry at St. Pius V parish in St. Louis. We are ending our coat collection for this winter, but we will collect again next fall. Below is a thank-you note from Sr. Leslie Dau, who directs the Immigrant and Refugee Ministry: Dear friends, On behalf of the Immigrant & Refugee Ministry, I would like to express my deepest thanks for your donations. With your support, you make it possible for our ministry to serve and make a difference in the lives of the immi-grants and refugees being resettled in St. Louis. January 20, 2019 –Gospel Background
January 20, 2019 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the Gospel today, at the wedding feast in Cana, Jesus reveals himself to his disciples and they began to believe in him. Every-
day, God also gives us signs of his love and so we also can respond in faith and trust.
Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul becomes a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering and you
give them reason to believe and to trust.
WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carry-ing on the work of Jesus and to those in need-by the gener-
osity you display when you share your treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

This Sunday we begin the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. For many Sundays in this lectionary cycle (Cycle C), our readings will be taken from the Gospel of Luke. Occasionally, however, we will read from John's Gospel. This is true of today's Gospel reading, which describes the beginning of Jesus' ministry and his first miracle. To situate today's reading within the context of John's Gospel, we note that John's report of this event follows Jesus' call of his first disciples. John tells us that Jesus and his disciples were invited to this wedding at Cana, as was Jesus' mother, Mary. There is no parallel report of this miracle at Cana in the Synoptic Gospels. In the Church's liturgical history, the wedding feast of Cana is closely associated with the baptism of the Lord and the adoration of the infant Jesus by the Wise Men. In this context, the sign Jesus performs at the wedding feast is celebrated as an epiph-any or a manifestation of Jesus' divinity. Yet awareness of Jesus' impending passion and death is ever present in John's Gospel. Even in this report of Jesus' first sign, the language used anticipates Jesus' passion. When Jesus says to his mother that his hour has not yet come, he protests against her wishes in language that John will use again when re-porting Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples. When introducing the story of Jesus washing his disciples' feet, John writes that Je-sus knew that his hour had come. In John's Gospel, Jesus is very much in command and aware of all that is to happen to him. Here, as elsewhere in John's Gospel, Mary is not men-tioned by name, but is referred to instead as the mother of Jesus. Mary is influential in Jesus' first sign. She will also be present at his Crucifixion, a witness to the final manifestation of his divinity. John's Gospel describes seven signs that indicate Jesus' identity to his disciples. John never speaks of these signs as mira-cles because their importance is not in the deed that Jesus per-forms but in what these deeds indicate about Jesus' identity. Here, as when John describes the other signs, the disciples are said to begin to believe, but no mention is made as to whether the other wedding guests are even aware of what has happened. Marriage and wedding feasts are metaphors used in Scripture to describe God's salvation and the Kingdom of God. Here at the beginning of Jesus' public ministry, John's Gospel seeks to establish that Jesus is going to re-interpret and fulfill Yahweh's promise to Israel. Jesus establishes the New Covenant. A hint about what this New Covenant will be like is made (continued…)-
evident in the deed that Jesus performs. Asked to do something to address the awkward situation that the absence of wine at a wed-ding feast would create, Jesus' miracle produces vast quantities of wine—six jars holding thirty gallons each are filled to overflowing with choice wine.
This lavish response to a simple human need is a vision for us of the abundance of God's kingdom. It challenges us to re-spond generously when confronted with human need today. We respond as best we can, fully confident that God can transform our efforts, bringing the Kingdom of God to fulfillment among us.
