QUICK ANSWERSto Design Questions

Customers can now access the new Mitsubishi Power ModuleLoss Simulator through the Powerex web site atwww.pwrx.com. This software, compatible withWindows98SE/Me/NT/2000/XP, is a tool for supporting yourdesign with the thermal calculation of a selected device.

When looking for the correct Powerex module (IGBT, IPM andDIP/Mini-DIP/SIP-IPM) for your design, the loss simulatorprovides a quick and easy way to arrive at junctiontemperatures and power loss statistics by simply entering theseries and module of interest and then adjusting the defaultedspecifications to match your application conditions. Theprogram will instantaneously calculate junction temperaturesand power loss of IGBT and FWD under the given applicationconditions.

The simulator is applicable for • Sinusoidal Output Currents• Modulation ratio=1 (Generally worst case for IGBT)• Output Frequency fo>30Hz (180rpm) (The current ripple

with a load inductance is not taken into consideration.)• Heatsink Temperature (TF) is defined below the

module baseplate (just under the IGBT/FWD chips)

If your application condition is out of the limits of the program,an error or alarm message will result.

In addition to calculating the basic statistics on junctiontemperature and power losses, you can simply click on variousgraph options to see the performance curves according to yourspecifications. Some of the graphs available are:

• Junction Temperature vs. Output Current• Junction Temperature vs. Switching Frequency• Power Loss vs. Output Current• Power Loss vs. Switching Frequency• Maximum Output Current vs. Switching Frequency

The maximum junction temperature is also available byclicking on a drop-down graph menu.

Multiple calculations with varying conditions can be comparedby saving one calculation window and creating a new windowby clicking on the “new window” button on your toolbar. Alloperations in this program are user friendly with a clearlymarked toolbar at the top of the screen. Help can be accessedvia a quick help (?) button on that toolbar to receive an instantexplanation for the active window.

Powerex now offers a single, non-isolated discrete IGBT. Designed specifically for high voltageapplications necessary in the pulse power market, this device allows high blocking voltage for fastswitching. It is capable of turning on faster than 2 microseconds while achieving greater than 1000A.

In a traditional application for high voltage IGBT modules, many chips are paralleled to reachhigh, long pulse conduction currents. Gate resistors and large packages with multiple chips areused. However, in the pulse power market, the key is to “turn the device on quickly,”according to Duane Prusia, Director of Custom Modules. This new discrete device(QIS4506001), he said, achieves that objective.

By putting several of these discrete devices in series, there is an ability to go toextremely high blocking voltages.

QIS4506001 is a 4,500V discrete which features a non-isolated package and amolybdenum mounting plate. 3300V, 2500V, and 1700V versions will be available in the verynear future. The complementary free wheel diode at 4500V is also available (see QRS4506001).

The QIS4506001 devices are suitable for a number of emerging markets, including microwave power modules, heavy radar, sonar, shipboard radar and directed energy applications.

“This device is an insurance policy for microwave tube manufacturers,” Duane added. The tubes are protected, because the device hasthe ability to shut down the grid. Another application, he said, is as a replacement for a thyratron, a high peak electrical switch.

“We now get more data and better data,” Don Morozowich,Powerex Director of Engineering-Custom Modules and ValueAdded Products, said.

This increase in the quantity and quality of data has been adirect result of the company’s investment in new testingequipment that is programmed by a computer engineer to meetvery specific hi-rel requirements.

In this industry, the old way of doing things was to capture dataeither on paper or, even if there was a database, to capture thedata from one test to one single database with no centralizeddata storage of multiple test results. The information from thevarious tests that might be run on a single component was nottied together. That is rapidly changing with the introduction ofmore advanced computerized testers, like the equipment beingdeveloped at Powerex.

Customers today are looking for hi-reliability pedigrees - acomplete history to go with the device - particularly when thecustomer is using a custom module. This pedigree requirescomputer integration of testing data.

A computer engineer at Powerex recently wrote the software fora new 5KV Blocking Life Tester. This equipment tests thestability of the Powerex 6.5 KV flat packs and 4500V flat packs. With the more computerized version of this tester, the keyparameters of temperature and voltage are controlled to a muchgreater extent. “Where we used to control temperature withinseveral degrees, it is now controlled to tenths of a degree perpart,” Don explained. Furthermore, the data is automaticallylogged to a centralized database. “In the future, it may bepossible for our customers to retrieve test data by serial numberfor the components they purchased,” Duane Prusia, Director ofCustom Modules, added.

Another updated and automated tester at Powerex is usedspecifically to analyze thyristors for a custom module client inthe aerospace market. The new tester performs the functions ofa tester that used to span approximately 24 square feet of floorspace. Using new electronics and software available today, thenew, smaller tester now fits on a desk and is capable of muchmore than merely conserving space. The old test equipmentbasically just provided pass or fail data, Don explained, but thenew test equipment gives the actual measurements and poststhem by device serial number to a central database.

Powerex has led the way for over 35 years in supplying highpower devices to industries, such as military and aerospace, where high reliability is key. With a military compliant testingfacility for Group A, B and C Testing, Powerex engineers cancustomize their test specs to achieve application-orientedtesting. Customized testing efficiently and accurately tests thePowerex components mechanically and electrically.

The continued investment made by Powerex in automation oftesting equipment will further increase the efficiency andaccuracy of these tests while also providing more data on eachcomponent.

VLA500&VLA502Reduce Design-In Time and Circuit Complexity

Designed to include the isolated DC-DC Converter that is normallyrequired externally for the gate drive, the VLA500 and VLA502 arehybrid integrated circuits designed for driving n-channel IGBTmodules in any gate-amplifier application.

The inclusion of the DC-DC converter reduces the design-in time andgreatly reduces the circuit complexity. Built-in short circuit protectionis another valuable added feature.

Powerex IGBT Gate Drivers are hybrid integrated circuits designed todrive Powerex IGBT modules. These devices operate as isolationamplifiers for the IGBT modules and they provide the requiredelectrical isolation between the input and output with an opto-coupler.

Both the VLA500 and the VLA502 feature built-in isolated DC-DCconverter for gate drive; SIP outline for reduction in space requiredfor mounting; built-in short circuit protection with fault output;variable fall time upon activation of the short circuit protection;2500Vrms isolation between input and output; and TTL compatible input. VLA500 is designed to drive standard IGBT modulesand optimized for use with the Powerex NF-Series CSTBT (CarrierStored Trench Gate Bipolar Transistor) IGBT.

Providing a maximum 700 nanosecond switchingspeed, VLA502 is designed to drive High Frequency IGBT modulesand optimized for use with the Powerex NFH-Series CSTBT (CarrierStored Trench Gate Bipolar Transistors) chip.

Example of Powerex Product Grid

In an ongoing effort to provide data in a more user-friendly format, anumber of changes have been made to the Powerex web site(www.pwrx.com).

Repeat visitors may have noticed a change recently when they clickon the product category of their choice on the homepage. From there, the user is taken to a product introductory page. This page wasdesigned to just give a brief overview of that category and allow theuser to decide quickly if he/she is in the right category. From there, there are now a number of different routes to take to access Powerexproduct information.

The parametric search by product specifications is still availableand it located to the upper left of the introductory page. By clickingon that option, the user can further define the search by specification, including specs such as product type, voltage, current, circuitconfiguration, application, etc. For the IGBT/IPM modules andSensors categories, there is also an option to search specifically fordevices that are recommended for new designs.

If an overview of the specifications of the product category is needed, product grids have been added. The links to the product grids arelocated to the upper right of the introductory page. These types ofgrids were included on a previous version of the Powerex web site. They were updated and brought back as a response to variouscustomer requests. The grids, which are in pdf format, can be viewed, printed and/or downloaded.

The search by part number is available on any of the pages and atany point in the search. The complete part number can be entered orjust a few letters and/or numbers with the wildcard (*) symbol to pullup close matches. A complete part number is not necessary to takeadvantage of this option.

Web Improvements

Once a product is chosen via any of the previously mentionedavenues, the datasheet for that device can be viewed, printed and/ordownloaded. Another new addition to the web site is the option ofviewing, printing and/or downloading the switching loss curves foreach IGBT/IPM module. This option is located in the far right columnof the results page while the datasheet is located to the far left. Again, this addition was made to the web site due to customer demand.Distribution inventory can also be viewed online by clicking on “instock” when it is shown in the second column from the left for aparticular device listing.

Yet another recent addition was a direct link from the Powerexhomepage to the Mitsubishi Power Module Loss Simulator. For more information on this software, see the article on page 2.
