I am pleased to say that all of the boarders returned back toschool safe and sound, having had a lovely half term break. They have all caught up on one another’s holidays, unpackedand quickly settled into their new dorms. Now, two weeks on,we have been so busy in the houses that the holidays seem adistant memory! The past fortnight has seen the children settleback into their school and boarding routines along with manyother events and activities. On Friday the 5eme pupilscompleted their second school assembly at Northbourne.Standing in front of their fellow pupils, teachers and boardingstaff they provided us with an entertaining presentation on theupcoming Sochi Winter Paralympics.

Saturday was a school day and saw the boarders and their peersfire lighting in Outdoor Education as well as training for theirrespective sports during the afternoon Games lesson. Inboarding time we made the most of the lighter evening andmany of the children went out to play on the top pitch beforesupper. In the evening, after a very active day, the childrensettled down on giant beanbags and watched a film before bed.

During the weekend the boarders were surprised by theintroduction of newly purchased duvet covers to both the boys’and girls’ houses. These have brightened up the rooms and thechildren were very excited to be given a choice between thenew patterns- though admittedly this has resulted in someunusual colour combinations in the bedrooms! We have neverknown the boarders to be so keen to change their bed linen!

On Sunday, after an enjoyable Church service complete withseveral hymns, a Dorm Captains’ Meeting and a tasty SundayLunch we finally made it to Canterbury for a quick shoppingspree! The boarders set off to find themselves costumes to wearfor this week’s World Book Day where they had to go to schooldressed as a character from a book. This meant that theyreturned to school with a strange combination of sweets, chocolate, hairspray, tops, hats, masks and goggles, to namejust a few of their props!

On Tuesday Northbourne Park hosted the Stevens andWainman Annual Cross Country event. Of our sixteen NPScompetitors, ten were boarders and after some superb results, both team and individual, we had a great evening ofcelebration in boarding! Congratulations to all of the children,we are very proud of you all! To add to the celebrations,Tuesday was also ‘Pancake Day’, or ‘Mardi Gras’, so our highspirits were lifted even further by having a feast of pancakes fordessert!

What a fortnight! After such a busy time the boarders will enjoyspending some time relaxing this weekend, whether at home orat school. Many of the children are heading back to Paris onFriday evening and we wish you a safe and enjoyable weekendand hope you have enough time to catch up on all the childrenhave been up to here! Those remaining at school will be in for atreat with a trip out on Saturday evening and some fun andunusual activities planned here.

As ever, please do not hesitate to be in touch with the boardingteam for any questions or concerns.

Under-9 Rugby vs Lorenden (Home)

Northbourne Park 5 tries v Lorendon 8 tries

In another close game with Lorendon we tended to rely too heavily on Jayson Weaden and Charlie Unitt to make good runswithout providing them with enough support. It has to be said that Lorendon’s support play was outstanding and they werequick to close down our space. However, repositioning ourselves more quickly when the play breaks down would have been toour advantage and may have stopped Lorendon scoring so freely. Our try scorers were Jayson Weaden with two, Max Skinglealso with two and Freddie Hendy with one.

Certainly one of the most frustrating aspects of this game was to see our boys close down the player successfully and yet stillmiss the tackle through not being able to grab the tag. It often looks like someone trying to catch a piece of paper in the wind!Tomorrow boys, we have the opportunity to show off our tackling skills. If nothing else, we should be able to vent ourfrustrations.

Under-9 Rugby vs Wellesley Training match (Away)

Nine boys travelled to Wellesley to take part in our first contact training match which turned out to be a very valuable exercise.Because this was a coaching game, play was rather stop and start however, we managed to put in some good tackles, ourpositioning became more thoughtful and we had the opportunity to work out rucks against an opposition for the first time. Wehave learnt much from this experience and look forward to some competitive matches with Wellesley in the future.

1st XV Rugby vs Wellesley House (Home)

On the back of a wonderful school team effort the day before in the Stevens and Wainman cross-country event – the boys werebuzzing! There was a certain “nous pouvons le faire” atmosphere around the school, and so the lads were asked to avoidcompliancy and believe in their new found skills and abilities.

It is hard to put into words the emotions that a group of people can feel and the heights they can achieve with passion, teamwork and belief. They say in life that faith can move mountains – and this has applied throughout the last sporting week here atNPS. This game was no exception.

Wellesley beat us 32-7 in the first match of the season and the team were eager to improve on that. We started poorly andfound ourselves pinned up against our try line for the first 7 minutes. However, our defence was resolute and steadfast, keepingthe opposition at bay and turning the ball over time after time and then clearing our lines. It wasn’t until the 17th minute thatwe were rewarded with a penalty just outside Wellesley’s 22 yard line. The team lined up to perform that great Zimbabweanmove aptly named “Zinzan!” Mr Riley has assured teams throughout the ages, by saying ‘hey boys it will only work once, so getit right!’ And get it right they did, with Felix Dont crashing over for the first try. Paddy Jackaman then slotted a penalty over justbefore half time to leave the score 8-0 to NPS. This was strange territory for the lads as they have not led at half time manytimes this season.

We knew that Wellesley would come back fighting after half time and so we would have to absorb their onslaught. Once again, the defence stood up to the test and we clicked into another gear, running in three further tries, that were all very wellconverted by Paddy Jackaman who had a superb afternoon with the boot – well done!

Unfortunately, nothing in life is perfect and we conceded two tries late on, mostly due to the fact that the lads had played thegame of their lives and were completely drained and exhausted! The ‘yesterday’s cross-country factor’ certainly having itseffect!!

Thankfully, we hung on like a determined Jack Russell to record just our second victory of the season! The final score was 22-12to NPS.

This was the last time many of the boys would don the 1st team rugby strip at home and they did so with great courage, skilland sheer tenacity. The looks in their eyes displayed the sort of determination and resolve that makes any coach smile, or in MrRiley’s case cry!! Boys, today you played like a team that has being playing together for 5 years, not two months! You certainlyclimbed out of the trenches, went over the top and faced the opposition. I am extremely proud of your achievements and soshould you be. This was a ‘Brothers in Arms’ performance.

Man of the Match: Too many heroes to mention, so it goes to ‘The Whole Team’ - because that is how you playrugby!! >

Sports NewsColts A vs Wellesley (Away)

This was a great game of rugby in which a valuable lesson was learnt. The game starts with the first whistle and if you wait 10minutes before you start playing then you’ll be in trouble.

The first 10 minutes of the game were, frankly, weak. Wellesley completely dominated and Northbourne looked like they didn’treally care. Not surprisingly, Wellesley went two tries up. This resulted in a few truths from the coach and at last Northbournewoke up.

Thomas Mead started to play like a man possessed and he ran ¾ of the pitch to score in the corner. Deservedly Wellesley scoredagain but very quickly Thomas Mead, again, picked up a loose ball and was driven over to score his second.

Northbourne controlled the rest of the game and Sam Ditton scored a great try to make it 3 tries all, but with Wellesley aheadby one conversion. Another try would seal it for Northbourne but time ran out and we went down by 2 points.

You can be proud boys for the way you played in the last 30 minutes of the game; unfortunately the game last for 40.

Final Score : Wellesley 21 Northbourne 19

STEVENS AND WAINMAN PREP SCHOOLS CROSS-COUNTRY

Tuesday 4th March 2014

The annual running of these two prestigious races took place under sunny skies and in almost perfect weather conditions. I sayperfect because our Welsh import (Chris White) complained of sunburn, having never seen the sun in Wales in March!!

The course was understandably saturated with puddles and mud, so there were certain parts of the course that were incrediblytechnical – more so than in previous years! This was the 46th running of the Stevens Cup (Boys) and the 35th time that theWainman Cup (Girls) has been held.

Every boy and girl in the NPS teams had been trialling and training extremely hard throughout the term – so hopes of successwere high! Indeed, we were the defending champions in the boys’ race and Jean-Baptiste Defour was the defending individualchampion. What transpired at the end of a marvellous afternoon of competition was once again inspiring, determined and verysuccessful.

The girls’ race was competitively fought between old rivals and every one of our young ladies gave their absolute all, runningbeautifully as a team and dovetailing very well. The sheer commitment they displayed was evident for all to see. Our first sixgirls back counted towards our overall position and our first six all finished in the top 26, which was nothing short of fantastic!Well done to you all on your exceptional performances.

The eagerly awaited boys’ race was next and once again the pace and rivalry was immense! As the girls before them, each ladplayed his part, running with technical and tactical maturity, guile and total will power. After what was an extremelydemanding and exhausting race, our first 6 boys rounded up the top 18.

This meant that for the second year in a row, our boys were crowned Stevens Cup champions, with our girls securing a muchdeserved runners up position in the Wainman Cup behind a very talented Sevenoaks team. Well done on yet anotherphenomenal achievement. Every boy and girl played their part, whilst ensuring two outstanding team results.

Special mention must be made of Jean-Baptiste Defour and Felix Dont. Although JB was not able to defend his title, he finishedin second place, with Felix just behind him in third place - magnifique!! Carla Ruiz de la Prada was our first girl home in eighthplace – Bravo!

Once again this was an exceptional NPS team effort. From the ladies in the kitchen, to all the pupils who were marshals and‘chaperones’, the staff helping on the course, the maintenance team and of course our runners – everyone joined forces toensure that this success belonged to the entire school community! And last but not least, to all of our invaluable Grad Assistantswho played a huge and very significant role in either administration or course management and set up – Merci!

The final individual results were as follows:

Stevens Cup Wainman Cup2nd Place – Jean-Baptiste Defour 8th Place – Carla Ruiz de la Prada

3rd Place – Felix Dont 13th Place – Amandine Lucas

8th Place – Pedro Ruiz de la Prada 15th Place – Honor Glynn-Williams

13th Place – Raphael Lanvin

15th Place – Camille Crye

21st Place – Ferdinand Plessix >

U13A Netball vs DYRMS (Home)

At last - a lovely sunny afternoon to play our return match against the Duke of York’s school. We had already beaten this teamearlier in the season so there were high expectations that we could do it again. Unfortunately, the girls were not able to rise tothe challenge this time. Basic passing was sloppy, the shooters were off form and we were unable to show the necessarycomposure on court. By half time we were 6 – 1 down.

Bringing Honor back from Goal Attack into defence slowed down the opposition’s attacking play and, in fact, they only scoredone more goal during the whole of the second half. With Camille absent Olaya had to take on the role of Goal Attack – a newposition for her and a steep learning curve! Our passing started to become more composed and accurate with some effectiveoverhead passes into the shooting circle. We managed to score 4 more goals – effectively winning the second half 4 -1 butresulting in a final overall score of 7 – 5 to Duke of York’s.

work harder in defence and made one or two important interceptions. Isabella, Sophia and Justine showed good footwork andmovement skills but do need to work on the accuracy of their passing now.

With Olivia gaining in confidence she made some good shots to keep us ahead and the match finished 11 – 5 to Northbourne.Well done Girls!

U13B Netball vs DYRMS (Home)

The game started well for us with some good interception and passing. The teams were pretty equally matched with bothteams making attempts at goal. The first quarter ended 0-0 which made a pleasant change for us! During the second quarter, after several well defended attempts at goal, Duke of York’s scored and the NPS girls responded to this by quickly sending theball down to the D for a lovely goal. Just before the half-time whistle Duke of York’s scored a second time. Leaving the half-timescore at 2-1 to them. Though we were now behind, we were feeling confident as this was our closest half-time score yet and weknew our play was good. We had noticed that the opposition tended to cluster around the ball and the play had becomeclumsy with several toss-ups and contact offences. We knew that we could try and use the available space to our advantage andhad high hopes for the remainder of the game. During the third quarter we were defending well, particularly Ruth and Lucilewho showed great team work with their marking in the D. Due to this, Duke of York’s were only able to succeed with one oftheir attempts at goal and we too were successful in one of our attempts, leaving the score at 3-2 to them. Though we were stillbehind we felt that there may be an opportunity for a draw or win if we could defend hard and increase our shooting accuracy. However, during the final quarter the Duke of York’s team powered down the court. The NPS girls had been fighting hard toeven the score but the opposition suddenly overpowered us and scored 5 consecutive goals with some superb shots! We madeattempts ourselves but began to get disheartened as the goal-gap grew. Final score 8-2 to DYRMS.

We were so close girls, well done for your efforts and we will keep pushing for a win! Keep your heads up, you played well!

Player of the match Marie-Louise Boisnier for determination and strong marking!

U11A Netball vs Spring Grove (Away)

The team started the game with determination and passion. Their passes were accurate and they were extremely efficient ingetting the ball to the attacking circle when it was NPS centre pass.

Evie played exceptionally well and scored three very difficult shots to put NPS into a 3-0 lead. Spring Grove had numerous shotsat goal, but thanks to the very good defending skills of Jess and Clara, they only managed to score 1 goal before half time.

After half time Spring Grove played a lot better and were intercepting passes and gaining possession of the ball. This enabledthem to score 3 goals to put them in the lead. It was exciting to watch the ball being played from end to end and the tensionwas mounting. NPS didn’t play as well in the second half and kept giving the ball away to the other team due to sloppy passes, however Isabella, Sophia and Evie managed to work the ball up the field during the final minutes and Evie scored yet againallowing NPS to equalise.

Well done to the girls for playing so well.

We were forced to defend throughout the first half, however, the team worked strongly, with Maria and Marie showing greatimprovement as Goal Keeper, intercepting lots of high passes into the circle. They worked effectively with Ashika and Alexandra, who played vital roles as the link between defensive and attacking play. However, by half time we were down 4-0.

In the second half, huge improvements were made. Once the ball was out of the defensive circle, Harriet, Abigail and Annamade some great passages of play throughout the centre third of the court, with some well time passes. This helped us to keeppossession into the attacking third where credit must go to Helena for stepping up to Goal Shooter. Helena fought hard in ourattacking circle, forming an excellent partnership with Anna, who both had some great shots against Spring Grove’s strongdefence but were extremely unfortunate not to score. The second half was much closer in terms of possession; however, SpringGrove still managed to break through our defence, scoring 3 goals in the second half. Despite a 7-0 defeat, the improvementsmade from previous games are impressive. Player of the match goes to Abigail Mead for accuracy of passes and improvedpositioning.

U13A Netball vs St Edmund’s (Home)

This was our return match against St. Edmund’s and as we had lost fairly comprehensively to them last time the girls were keento show that they had improved since then.

We started very positively and went 3-1 up after the first quarter. The team has been working hard on repositioning quickly atfree passes and throw on situations in training and they implemented this impressively today. The passing up the court betweenHonor, Emily, Carla, Camille and Amandine was snappy, well timed and effective.

After half time St. Edmund’s best player came back on as Goal Attack and made a significant difference – scoring a number ofgoals and allowing them to pull ahead. Libby managed to score once more at the end of the game to make the final score 11 –4 to St Edmund’s.

Players of the Match - Amandine Lucas and Camille Olcott
