RECEPTIONNEWS

Inter Care CharitYork House Medical Centre isgoing to begin sending re-turned medication, plus BNFand MIMS publications(which give health profession-als up to date informationabout prescribing matters) toa charitable organisationcalled Inter Care (registeredcharity number 275637).They are licensed to sendmedical items, which are inperfect condition but whichare not going to be used inthe UK, to help save lives inAfrica.

We will be happy to receiveitems of medication, in theiroriginal packs, unopened, ifthey are not going to be used

by the patient for whom theywere prescribed. The expirydate on the pack must be atleast 15 months from thedate they are to be sent tothe charity. Not all items aresuitable. For example wecannot accept controlleddrugs which must by law bereturned to a pharmacy fordestruction. Other items aresimply not used in 3rdworldcountries. The type of medi-cation we can send onwardsincludes antibiotics, inhalersif unopened, pain killers, ant-acids, blood pressure medica-tion and antidepressants. They will also accept un-opened dressings.

Jayne Baker left us in April after working at the surgery for 5 years. A decision was taken not toreplace her which has resulted in reception triaging calls on a Wednesday when there is neither anurse practitioner or triage nurse. As appointment availability is improving, this has not createdtoo much of a problem as we are able to offer patients an appointment within 48 hours. We havehowever noticed that reception triaging calls, has ultimately resulted in more 'extras' on aWednesday evening surgery.

NursinSmokine: Cessation

All the practice nurses andTranee our Health Care Assis-tant have been trained as

smoking cessation advisors.

We are providing an excellentservice for those individualswho are trying to give up thehabit ( and it is very difficultto give up). So far we have

I've been working on this mini project over the past few monthsin order to make this area of work more efficient and easier for

staff to process forms. I'm awaiting comments from the Partnersbut I've been discussing the process with Katie and Cathy and I'dlike to start this as soon as possible.

I would like the new system to do the following: to allow patientsto be informed about why a fee applies, what the fees are; aprocess to be run mainly by reception with enough information togo to the right doctor; and to be returned to the patient promptly.I would like reception to have a minimum amount of chasingreports and blocking up phone lines from patients.

More information will go on the website and our intra net site;and patient information will be on the notice boards and at re-ception. Katie will organise training for receptionists.

ServerUQgradeWe had a new 'mail' serverinstalled over the period 28th

to 30th April 2010!

Unfortunately this was notwithout its problems. Christhe engineer was very suppor-tive but his job was difficultand painstaking. Because ofthe quantity of data held onthe server, and the hugenumber of emails stored theprocess took much longerthan expected. Luckily wewere not without most of the

Patient Partner (or our virtual receThe live version of this hasnow been working for someweeks. Although I understandsome patients are saying theydo not like it, we need to re-member that quite a fewmore are using it to goodeffect. Statistics are availableto back this up. We are how-ever getting quite a few at-tempts that are 'not vali-dated' i.e. the date of birthand telephone number does

not match. The welcome mes-sage has therefore beenamended and now asks thecaller to key in their home ormobile number as held ontheir record. I hope this willreduce the number of peopleunable to use the service.
