This year was another exciting one for the Alpha Chapter. Duri ng National Ge­ography Awareness Week we sold T­shirts and went on a wild weekend canoe and camping trip to Turkey Run in In­diana. The weather and fall colors were beautiful, hiking was fun, and the river was low, making a wet run for 5 out of 6 canoes. In November, the members took an Indianapolis trip to see an ice hockey game and to sightsee. We also had our 4th Annual Geography White Elephant Auction which brought in $330.00. To honor our graduating ge­ography seniors and our new GTU members, we had a very elegant lunch­eon at Jumers Chateau and gave each student a copy of the department his­tory, The First Thirteen Decades. Throughout the year we continued our weekly talk session-happy hour which has a correlation between the number of participants versus the time of year. The Spring Semester began with an enter­taining ski weekend to Devil 's Head, Wisconsin . The beginners spent more time putting on their skis than skiing. During the winter some hardy members, spouses, and children braved a blinding blizzard to attend an ice hockey game in Peoria (45 minutes away) which actually took 1 1/ 2 hours to drive. Those who made it had a good time. In March five members participated as timers in the State Geography Bee while other mem­bers sold Geography T-shirts ($1,256.00 worth to be exact). We also had a booth at the Earth Day/ Spring Fest on cam­pus. In May members worked hard set­ting up and organizing the 4th Geog­raphy Career Fair which was a great success, again! In April several mem­bers took a weekend to visit Chicago and the J . G. Shedd Aquarium. In late April, on a gorgeous day, we had our first an­nual GTU golf outing , sporting faculty and students alike. Everyone had a great

time and we plan to do it again next year. The GTU officers this year planned ini­tiation as a buffet luncheon for our new members and a retirement party for one of our beloved professors, Dr. E. Joan Miller, who has retired after 31 years of dedicated teaching . And last but not least, our annual spring picnic, which included installation of new officers, much food, softball and soccer. Again, the Alpha Chapter in its 65th year has proven that time enhances an organization. We were very happy to be recognized as one of the top ten active Chapters in the orga­nization, and being the Alpha Chapter this is a very special honor indeed.

After almost 20 years of inactivity, the Alpha Sigma Chapter of GTU at Clark is functioning again. This year we held our third annual induction ceremony, and have increased the overall membership to thirty persons. Next year the Alpha Sigma Chapter will be headed by two very enthusiastic people, whom I feel will develop GTU, geography and Clark very positively.

The highlight of GTU activities at Western Illinois University in 1992-1993 occurred during Geography Awareness Week. The Beta Gamma Chapter staffed a display table in the university union building, co-sponsored an invited guest lecture on global agriculture and trade, and conducted a campus-wide GEO­HUNT competition featuring geographic

clues to different campus buildings where multiple geographic questions awaited interested students. In the spring, GTU members attended the Illinois Geo­graphical Society meeting in Southern Illinois where president Dan Schmidt presented a paper concerning his mas­ter's thesis research. Ten new members joined the ranks of GTU in 1992-93. The WIU Chapter also organized two suc­cessful picnics (fall and spring) and a Christmas party attended by faculty, staff, students, and friends of Geography. To conclude the year, the Beta Gamma Chapter is reorganizing, adding a vice president and establishing committees in order to carry out GTU activities more efficiently and to involve the rank and file membership more actively in geo­graphic functions.

The Beta Iota Chapter of East Caro­lina University has enjoyed a very active academic year. We have inducted six­teen new members this year, and both old and new members have remained active in meetings and projects. We plan our activities at monthly luncheon meet­ings at area restaurants, and have al­ways had good participation. With the help of the North Carolina Geographic Alliance, the National Geographic Soci­ety, and ECU's Geography Department, the fall induction ceremony and formal reception was held during the National Geography Awareness Week. Several members also attended a weekend ex­cursion to North Carolina's Croatan Na­tional Forest where we explored the unique geomorphology and biology of the area under the guidance of Dr. Jon­athan Phillips. Another field trip is planned for April to the coastal barrier islands of the Atlantic shoreline. In April we attended the annual national meet­ing of the AAG in Atlanta and received

The Beta Pi Chapter initiated 15 reg­ular members at its spring dinner, the largest group of initiates since the Chap­ter was chartered in 1956! Numerous social and academic events were co­sponsored with the Carroll College Geo­graphical Society during the year, in­cluding a field trip to the American Geo­graphical Society Map Library in Milwaukee during the fall and a trip to the AAG Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA during the spring. Geography students and faculty also hosted the college's 1992- 93 " Major Speaker," Dr. Stephen Schneider of the National Center for At­mospheric Research, who addressed the campus on the issue of global warming and global climatic change.

The Beta Psi Chapter was very active during the 1992-93 academic year. In September, Dr. M. Aminul Islam, of the University of Dhaka, spoke at Kansas State. In October, geography alumni re­turned to attend activities which in­cluded an alumni lecture by Rick IIlgner, a reception, and the GTU fall picnic. Also in October, Harm J. de Blij presented the KSU's convocation lecture. Kansas State was host to the Great Plains/ Rocky Mountain AAG meeting in 1993. Many members presented papers and at­tended presentations and activities at the

regional meeting. T-shirts were sold at the GPRMAAG meeting by GTU mem­bers. GTU's fall banquet was held dur­ing Geography Awareness Week in No­vember. Kamlesh Lulla of NASA presented a lecture titled " The Ultimate Geography Field Trip" at the banquet. The spring semester's events included visits from guest speakers B. L. Turner of Clark University and Melvin Marcus of Arizona State. February events in­cluded the KSU Telefund. In March, Paul Phillips of Fort Hays State University spoke at the spring banquet. In April , GTU members travelled to the AAG na­tional conference in Atlanta, set up a display at KSU's Open House, and at­tended the spring picnic. On-going activ­ities of the Beta Psi Chapter include St. George Geographical Society meetings and aluminum can recycl ing.

Fox Highlights of Activities:

University of Missouri's GTU Chapter initiated fifteen new members after sev­eral years of inactivity. The new ener­getic group gained recognition through its T-shirt sales and help as assistants at the Missouri Geography Bee and the Geography 92 Teacher Seminar. GTU members also cleaned a section of a highway, adopted by the Department of Geography, and Incorporated this activ­ity as part of their induction ceremony. The GTU scholarship was awarded to Eric Compass. The year concluded with a field trip to St. Louis. GTU members explored the Cahokia Mounds, observed East St. Louis and enjoyed Laclede's Landing and Union Station.

" get-togethers," the Delta Alpha Chap­ter has been busy. For Halloween, there was an overnight camping trip in nearby Sedona. We hiked, carved pumpkins, and roasted marshmallows. The "big event" for 1992 was a presentation, arranged by GTU members, discussing the Grand Canyon Trust and Colorado River Prob­lems. Many NAU students atte'nded for the discussion and debate.

The Delta Zeta Chapter, along with the Geography Club, proudly sponsored the 24th Annual South Dakota State Geog­raphy Convention which occurred on April 1-3, 1993. Events consisted of a Job Fair, student paper presentations, nine invited outside faculty presentations, plus other professionals. Also, a wine and cheese tasting party, a geography bowl, and a grand banquet plus awards cere­mony were sponsored. In addition, the spring initiation of 14 new members in GTU from SDSU was held. Concurrent with the convention of April 2, was the South Dakota State Geography Bee. The Final Round was scheduled as part of the activities and video-taped for broadcast on South Dakota Public TV.

In November the Delta Zeta Chapter, along with the Geography Club, ob­served Geography Awareness Week with a series activities, displays and demon­strations in the Student Union and off campus in local secondary schools.

The members of Delta Zeta Chapter are planning the 25t h Annual South Da­kota State Geography Convention which is scheduled for April 14- 16, 1994. This edition of the convention w ill bring in a

series of special speakers and presen­tations; it will lionor Dr. Edward P. Ho­gan, the founder of the current Geog­raphy Department, who is the State Geographer and Assistant Vice Presi ­dent for Academic Affairs.

This past year, we were involved in several activities. On April 3, we helped with a Geography Bowl with area high school students. We also sponsored a field trip to Cahokia Mounds, Illinois. Earlier in this semester, we sponsored speakers on such topics as meteorology, China and overcrowding population throughout the world . We also cleaned our street twice this past school year which is part of the adopt-a-street program.

For National Geography Awareness Week a table in college center was setup to provide information on the discipline. The Chapter sponsored two slide shows. One by Steven La Boo, of his stay in Rwanda, Africa. The other was by Keven, of his stay in Chile. Other activities include the fall induction of one member, and the Spring induction of six new members into the Chapter.

The Eta Epsilon Chapter had elections in the fall of 1992 and we did something a little different. Due to a tie vote for president, we decided on a co-presi­dency. The duties are shared equally with an alternating presiding officer over meetings. In the fall our Chapter orga­nized a presentation on cave mapping (open to the public) which was well re­ceived. Geography Awareness Week was a huge success. A display on geography was in the bookstore window all week and a quiz contest was held. The contest was open to all students, faculty and staff (except geography majors). A number of prizes were donated by National Geo­graphic Society, Dr. M. Hill and others. An article ran in our school newspaper about the many facets of geography and to promote the contest and Geography Awareness week. Our end of the year party was bittersweet. Two of our mem­bers have graduated and our sponsor, Dr. Hill, can no longer serve as our sponsor. We will miss her and wish her well. We wish to welcome Dr. Robert Durland as our new sponsor and look forward to a busy 1993-94 year.

The Geneseo Chapter had a record 26 members this year. Six students have been actively involved in research en­deavors with faculty members that have resulted in their professional debuts with presentations at the Middle States AAG, annual AAG, and local college meetings. The group organized seminars on " How to Study for GRE's," "Student World Travels," and "The Geography of Sin­gapore." Field trips ranged from a hockey game to a trip to the Niagara power plant. The end of the academic year cul­minated with an induction ceremony at the annual Geography Department's award banquet.

The Geography Department held a pizza party for all GTU members to get to know each other and everyone was singing by the end of the evening. Dur­ing National Geography Week we had a booth at the student center and a guest speaker from the Water Resources Di­vision of our School of Engineering . Co­lumbus Day was celebrated with a pot­luck dinner for members and their families. One of our members really got into the spirit and came as Christopher Columbus himself. The Christmas din­ner included a "tacky" gift exchange and the " Field Techniques" class gave a pre­sentation of their semester's work.

Initiation was held in March during the St. Patrick's Day brunch . Fourteen new members were inducted, 12 regular members and 2 associates. We had our first GTU field trip this year. Members and their families went to Chena Hot Springs, outside Fairbanks, and enjoyed soaking in the pool and hot tubs. The

senior seminar class gave their final pre­sentation at a luncheon given before fi­nals week and elections were held. There was such an increase in interest, we have expanded from 3 club officers to 4.

We are thankful to all this year's guest speakers. We were able to hold two public talks in the evening and for dur­ing the day. We also appreciate the un­wavering support of the Geography De­partment faculty and administrative secretary. It was a busy, but productive year.

In April of 1993, 21 new members were installed into the Eta Kappa Chap­ter. A special award for excellence in digital geography was also presented at the ceremony in honor of Representa­tive J. Michael Ruane of Salem. Speak­ers at the event included the Speaker of the Massachusetts House and the Chair of the House Ways and Means Commit­tee. Chief Justice Sam Zoll and many members of the General Court were in attendance. This year, 26 new members will be installed in the Chapter and Rep­resentative Ruane will present the Digi­tal Geography Award.

In 1992, GTU presented a lecture se­ries with geography films and two pre­sentations and discussion with Dr. Ken­nedy and Christopher Lukinbeal. During Geographic Awareness Week, GTU pre­sented "Geographic Pictionary" (two days of the game as it relates to geography). This was open to all on campus, with prizes. GTU presented a Geosphere Journal, (a student journal of Geog-

raphy and Environmental Studies open to all students on campus). In April, GTU celebrated Earth Day along with stu­dents for Environmental Action to bring two days of speakers, music, lectures, food, displays and demonstrations relat­ing to recycling. GTU of Hayward takes "Geographic Pictionary" to the Califor­nia Geographers meeting. Finally a ban­quet in June to honor new members and graduating members.

Highlights of Activities: Activities throughout the year were

non-existent due to the change-over and loss of records. However, Ms. Kennedy has been instrumental in getting se­niors, juniors, and even several sopho­mores interested in GTU. Consequently we expect to see increased membership over the next several months, and will have an active Chapter next year. Cur­rently, we are in the process of applying for initiation of our graduating seniors. We expect several to join GTU. We held two meetings during the year, which were attended by geography students who were not members.

Our Chapter had an exciting year which featured activities, displays and presentations from around the world. Late last summer the Chapter helped raise public interest and prevent illegal dumping of toxic liquids into the storm drains of Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor: GTU along w ith the Geo Club spray painted warning signs next to drains leading to the Huron River.

During the year, several presenta­tions were made to the Chapter. Dr. Robert Ward presented a lecture on land fills, disposal problems and solutions in Shangha i P.R .C. a city of 12 million peo­ple. Dr. Nicholas Raphael had an illus­trated presentation on the utilization of land in the Dominican Republic. He also did another illustrated lecture on the land forms of western Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea coast.

Geography Awareness Week was highlighted with displays, quizzes, and geographical information for the Univer­sity community in a busy lobby of the geography/geology building . Steven May was recognized for his commitment and contributions to the Department over the school year at an awards ceremony.

I have only recently become the undergraduate advisor and am looking to revive both an undergraduate club and the Chapter of GTU. Many of the tips for maintaining an active chapter is true for Cincinnati . I also think the officers for the local club, will have to serve at the same time as officers for the GTU Chapter.

Our Chapter had a very productive year. The activity conducted as our phi­lanthropy, Wilderness on Wheels, was a great success. Wilderness on Wheels is a boardwalk for handicapped people so they may enjoy the wilderness. Several graduates, undergraduates and profes­sors volunteered a day representing GTU to Wilderness on Wheels. Bob Garret from the United States Geological Sur­vey spoke to GTU about river gauging and flood control. Two undergraduate students spoke on their summer trips to foreign countries. Chris Sutton a Ph .D. Student presented a well received slide show. GTU also sold T-shirts and had an overnight trip to the University of Den­ver's Mount Evans Field Station.

The Kappa Delta Chapter at CCSU ini­tiated 27 new members this year, an all­t ime record. We are one of the ten most active chapters in GTU, and if this keeps up we will rank first among all chapters for number of initiates in the last ten years! This was a fairly active year for us. In October, we took a team to par­ticipate in the Geography Bowl at the New England-St. Lawrence Valley Geo­graphical Society. We came in second, but are looking for a first-place finish in the fall of 1993. Next came Geography Awa reness Week and we sponsored a variety of projects to raise student con­sciousness about geography. Many of our members went on a 17-day adven­ture to Jamaica in January; this trip, sponsored by the Geography Depart­ment, was an exciting experience! We helped out w ith the State Geography Bee at the end of March. We ended the year with our annual honors banquet at a fine Chinese restaurant in the area. 75 at­tended, our highest number ever.

Thirty new members were initiated throughout the year and informal so­cials were held to honor them. Seven geo-odysseys were presented by stu­dents, faculty and field professionals. Topics ranged from tourism and GIS to problems of specific regional areas. Dur­ing National Geography Awareness Week, our Chapter promoted geograph­ical awareness on campus by sponsor­ing five days of activities devoted to dif­ferent aspects of Geography in various world regions, with winners competing in Geography Jeopardy. In the spring of 1993, 9 GTU members attended a re­gional GTU conference in Brookings, SD. Two presentations were delivered, one described the NGA Week promotion and the other described our extensive GIS program at SCSU. Four GTU members also attended the Minnesota Academy of Science competition in Duluth. One GTU member gave a presentation on the historical mapping of the watershed dis­trict in Sterns City, MN for the compe­tition, and though he did not win, he stated that the experience was a valu­able one. We sold sweatshirts and T­shirts at different university events through the school year.

There were two initiations this year with a total of 30 new members. Two dinners were held in conjunction with the initiations. GTU and the Geography Club co-sponsored several lectures in the De­partment. In addition, the two groups co-

sponsored a highway section in the Adopt-A-Highway program. A joint end of the year luncheon was held and the juniors hosted a reception for graduates and their parents. Chad Meadows was named the 1992-93 outstanding graduate.

Our Chapter was very active in 92-93; along with the Geography Club, we sponsored many activities. We had sev­eral speakers du ring Geography Aware­ness Week, a water taste test and co­sponsored an open house in the De­partment. We sold T-shirts and held bake sales to raise funds. Seven members at­tended the regional AAG conference in Manhattan KS. , and five members at­tended the National meeting in Atlanta . We also took a trip to Moab UT, six members attended th is trip. We ended the year with GTU initiation, nine regu ­lar members and three associative members were inducted. We followed with an awards presentation .

Our Chapter has been quite active over the past year. We have had several pasta dinners at Kristen Kennedy's house where most of the planning takes place. We made solid rock jewelry to defray expenses for Chapter activities, earning almost $500 over the past two years. This past years events included : a canoe trip down the mighty Embarras River; a

weekend in St. Louis with a tour of the Defense Mapping Agency, the night life and restaurants in the area; a rapelling trip to the Shawnee Hills in southern Il­linois and the annual m id-winter camp­ing / caving trip to Buckner's Cave. Two members Mike O'Keeffe and Dan Oster­man delivered papers at professional meetings th is past year. The Chapter has initiated a yearly award from the Mark­well Fund. This year the award went to Kristen Kennedy, she received a sleep­ing bag that will keep her warm down to 0 degrees. We hope she gets years of use from it .

During the past year, Theta Chapter was very active. We went on two over­night camping trips and several day trips. The fall camping trip to southern Ari­zona toured Sonoita and a winery in El­gin before hiking and camping at Parker Canyon Lake. The group also went to the Coronado National Memorial, examined southern Arizona farm and ranch house building styles, stopped at the Marcos de Niza Monument in Lochiel, spent time in the abandoned mining camps of Duqane, Harshaw, and Washington Camp and toured the town of Patagonia. The spring camping trip was to Organ Pine National Monument. It included a stop in Ado to look at cultural changes now that copper is no longer mined or pro­cessed . GTU members also hiked to the top of Ado Mountain a volcanic peak and went to Quitobaquito Springs on the Mexican-American border. Day trips in­cluded local cotton gins; a hike along the Wet Beaver Creek trail in the Verde Val ­ley; a trip to Florence to look at the many historical buildings, a hike on Poston 's Butte, a look at the Ashurst-Hayden di­version dam at the Gila River, and a stop at the Casa Grande National Monument.

In-house activities included helping with moderating, timing, and registering par­ticipants at the Arizona State Geography Bee.

The Zeta PI Chapter has had its infa­mous spaghetti dinner social. Mounds of spaghetti are produced while mem­bers compete for Guru of Geography trivia. The annual Geography Bowl was a great success for bringing about the awareness of what geographers do to promote interest in Geography. The next social event of the year will be the great pizza snort feast. It is here that our Chapter elects a new presidency in preparation for the upcoming school year.
