The History of Cherry Hill Peninsula

A LOOK BACK IN TIME AT THE EASTERN PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY AREAThe lush acreage of Cherry Hill along Prince William County’s waterfront is the new home of Potomac Shores, but its significance to the area spans many years into the past.

During the Civil War, the Potomac River was a strategic trade route of supply and communication, and all ships cruising to or from Washington, D.C. passed through the Prince William County waterfront along the way.1 Confederate soldiers worked to establish 4 gun batteries across the waterfront, including Cherry Hill, which was referred to as Cockpit Point, just 14 days into the conflict between the northern and southern states.2 Their blockage effectively slowed down Union ships and on March 8, 1862, President Lincoln ordered the Union soldiers to destroy all Confederate batteries. The Confederates, however, abandoned their posts and demolished much of the batteries before the Union troops could make a move.3

When the Civil War ended, Cherry Hill Peninsula and the surrounding economy started rebuilding. Commercial fishing became an important industry and many residents sought to supplement their paychecks by catching several types of fish, including rockfish, bass, fishing carp and catfish.4

With Potomac Shores’ strategic approach to maintaining the integrity of its surrounding land and shoreline, the Cherry Hill Peninsula’s landscape remains reminiscent of its days as unoccupied shoreline and a marine hub for locals.1-4 Karnes, Debrarae, “The History of the Prince William County Waterfront,” (1998) 17-22.
