CALENDAR OF THE SOUL _____________________________________________________________________________

In shining majesty the mighty sun,

A king upon his chariot of gold,

Climbs higher till the heights of heaven are won

In glory streaming, blessed to behold.

And watching him, I feel a strange sense grow

That speaks of things that now I cannot see;

For only later will I truly know

How at his hour, God’s Spirit of the Sun is touching me.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM

_____________________________________________________________________________ EARLY CHILDHOOD CHATTER “Run, run, as fast as you can. You can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man! I have run away from an old woman and an old man, and I can run away from you, I can, I can” So chants the gingerbread boy in the story the children enjoyed last week. They also made gingerbread biscuits and a couple of ‘unlucky’ children might have had theirs run away before morning tea! Did you hear the oven door open? Where can that cheeky gingerbread boy be? Pandemonium followed as everyone hunted for the gingerbread boy, who inevitably is spotted by sharp eyes and plucked from his hiding place. And thus the joys of kindergarten continue for the children. The Rainbow Children have been enjoying a whole range of circle dances and games during their afternoons and we would like to invite all the parents of the Rainbow Children to come in next Wednesday afternoon 10th December at 2.45pm to see the children playing some of them. Meanwhile the teachers have been preparing, as we have invited you to do, for Advent. We have studied some of Steiner’s writing about the celebration of Christmas, sometimes just talking about one or two key sentences brought to the group. We have begun to plan what our Advent celebrations will be and we have talked about what is going to be important in our rooms. We have included a few more ideas for bringing a consciousness to your Christmas preparations – please enjoy. We have also recently met and carried out our secret business to prepare for the telling of the Christmas story on the last day of term. What is our secret business? Wait for the story and then you will know. The special Christmas story is for all children and parents from mothers group, all playgroups and kindergartens and it will start at 11.15am on Tuesday 16th December. If you are coming please be prompt so your child sees the fire fairy light the candle. The last day of term is also momentous for the Rainbow Children and their parents as it represents the children’s last day in kindergarten. Whilst the children do come back to kindergarten on the first day of next year, so that we can accompany them up to Class 1 and their new teacher, Tuesday 16th December will be their last full kindergarten morning. On that day we hold a graduation ceremony, which this year will be held in Lilly Pilly at 10.30a.m. We recently got together to write a special verse for the graduating children taking our inspiration from the first line of a William Wordsworth poem: “My heart leaps up when I behold, A rainbow in the sky, So it was.....” For the graduation ceremony all the Rainbow Children wear white so we ask the parents of the Rainbow Children to please send in some white clothes, in a separate bag clearly named, for your child to change into for the ceremony. Ideas for this could be a white t-shirt or a white skirt or dress. Everyone is invited to the Rainbow Children’s graduation ceremony - please arrive promptly at 10.30am.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM cont… WAYFARERS NEWS The Wayfarers Adventures at Bickley Camp It’s been a while since we went now, but the Wayfarers long anticipated camp at the Bickley Adventure Camp did not disappoint. The children had a wonderful time as they extended themselves in many ways. For some the flying fox was the highlight, for others it was the challenging crate climb, working together to find the orienteering targets or keep their raft afloat and for others simply being away from home for two nights in a row was a hurdle to overcome. For some it was keeping track of their clothes and for others, remembering to bring their tea-towel to dry their dishes! Whatever the case, there was some kind of growth for everyone on camp. We spent time gazing at the stars to find several of the constellations we had studied in the classroom and thanks to the telescope brought by Craig, Isaac’s dad, we had a wonderful opportunity to look closely at the moon we had been tracking for the past month. The courage I saw in the children left me in awe as they scrambled up the tower of crates they built together to reach and squeeze a little pink elephant. Those who found it easy were encouraged to climb without holding onto the crates or the rope that held them safe. Mitchell made it to the top of the tower only to find that he was not quite high enough to reach the elephant. Given much encouragement from his peers to “JUMP!” up from the wobbly crates to touch it, he did. I’m not sure if he landed back on the crates or if he was saved by the rope, but it doesn’t really matter does it? He’s certainly far more brave and trusting than I would have been!! The weather was hot and the children were delightful. They supported each other in all endeavours and had great fun doing it. They were polite to all who worked with them and respectful at all times. Everyone pitched in at dishes time and now most of them know to turn their dishes upside down to drain the water out of the bowl or cup! What has the dishwasher done to our children??? So much organisation goes into a camp and I would like to sincerely thank all those involved. I’m pretty sure some of the children had hollow legs on camp, but we had soooo much delicious food and fortunately there was plenty for seconds and at times even thirds…..anyone for more spaghetti???? Thank you to Donna Legge for co-ordinating the wholesome and scrumptious food and for all the parents for pitching in with preparation. Thanks also to the wonderful helpers who came on camp, Louise, Craig and his telescope, Clare and Janice and to all the parents who drove us to and from the venue. The camp could not have happened (or at least not as cheaply!) without you all. With much gratitude, Megan

WAYFARERS NEWS cont… Camp Writing from the Wayfarers During the school camp we did lots of fun activities. The crate climb was really fun because we were able to design our own structure then try to climb. It also involved a lot of team work. The raft building was my favourite. We started off by building the raft out of wood and crates then we tied them all together. Once we had launched the rafts into the water we had a few tests. After that we had a big race which my team won. That night we all did stargazing. We were able to see the top half of Scorpius. The moon looked amazing through the telescope. The next day after breakfast we did orienteering and the flying fox. The flying fox was really cool but it would have been nice if it was a bit longer. I didn’t enjoy the orienteering because it was hot and we kept on going in the wrong direction. On the last day we packed up our dorms and we spent the rest of the day playing down at a park. I really enjoyed the camp! Skye I liked Bickley Camp because I learned new stuff and how to have fun when you are not with your friends. I also learned how to be careful around water. I liked orienteering because we saved a 28 parrot. I like rafting and building the rafts, the flying fox and going upside down on the flying fox. Orienteering is where you find a red and blue triangle which has a number and two letters on it. We had a survival pack with two horns, a pump, map and a radio. The water in Bickley camp was sparkly, shiny, clear, safe, fun and warm. Jack On camp I enjoyed the orienteering and the crate climb the most. I loved sleeping in the dormitories much more than in the tent like last camp. I was pleased to find doing the dishes was very quick and easy. I loved the orienteering because we got to use maps and radios. I didn’t quite like working as a team. I think I would rather do it with two people. Isaac Wow, it was a great experience! I think my favourite things would probably be……..The Crate Climb, The Flying Fox and just hanging out with my friends!! While I was there I felt a lot of different emotions. I felt happy, comfortable and relaxed. I also felt thrilled, excited, exhausted and maybe even a little scared. I feel that if I hadn’t pushed myself that last little bit on the Crate Climb I would have gone home feeling like I could have done better. The only thing that challenged me was looking up for the purple elephant that you have to squeeze. I think it was the feeling of falling backward! The only thing I didn’t really like was having to drink so much water, when my stomach was saying; “Hang on mate, don’t give me more, I’ll just go POP!!! Other than that I had a great time. Kate

The Ballad of the Wayfarers Camp

The Wayfarers went to Bickley Camp,

And stayed there for two nights, We went walking every day, And saw interesting sights.

We saw the stars far in the sky, We climbed up many a crate,

We ate many piles of good food, And stayed up very late.

We crafted a raft and raced along,

The river bank and saw, Ducks and fish and many things,

Along the river shore.

The following day we were so tired, We could do no more,

But it was a great experience, That we could not ignore.

Amalia

NOOSA PENGARI STEINER SCHOOL (QUEENSLAND) APPEAL

You may have read or seen in the news recently the tragic accident that occurred in New Zealand, involving children on school camp from the Noosa Pengari Steiner School. We have received an appeal from the school to all other Steiner Schools for support of their families during this time of need. “While insurance covers a large portion of the expenses arising from the accident in New Zealand, there are many costs that are not covered. These include accommodation and meal costs in NZ for some family members, phone and internet charges, etc.” A particularly significant need is the provision of ongoing counselling services for the students and staff and their families. If you would like to support these families in their time of need, donations can be made by deposit into BSB: 034 219 Account: 303458. Please identify any deposits as 'NZ Accident Appeal'.

WA FAMILIES WITH FIVE-YEAR-OLDS SHOULD MOVE STATES: PARENTING

EXPERT News - KATIE ROBERTSON Social Affairs Reporter - PerthNow December 21, 2013 6:00PM

THE WA education system has been attacked for forcing kids into institutionalised learning too early and robbing them of their childhood. Australian author and parenting specialist, Maggie Dent.

A leading parenting expert has gone so far as to suggest WA families with young children should consider moving interstate or home schooling their kids.

Maggie Dent, an Australian author and parenting specialist, told The Sunday Times the "saddest stories" she hears are from WA parents because of compulsory schooling for five-year-olds.

"If your child is not looking too flash at the end of the four-year-old (kindergarten) group that you've got them in, you could keep them home if you want to in any other state except WA, where as soon as they turn five they must turn up to school," she said.

"There isn't any flexibility in that and the one size fits all doesn't always work.

"In WA, I have worked very hard to help some parents whose children are still wearing nappies, they need a three-hour sleep in the afternoon and they are being forced to go to school.''

In WA, the first year of compulsory schooling is pre-primary. A child must attend if they turn five years old by June 30 - meaning some kids can be four-years-old when they start their official education.

In NSW, all children must be enrolled in school by their sixth birthday while in Victoria children must be at school in the year they turn six.

In a submission to the Federal Government's current childcare and early learning inquiry, Ms Dent writes that WA is leading the nation in pushing formalised education on younger and younger ages.

She said parents who feel their young children are struggling at school should look at moving states or home schooling their children.

"To be honest, if I get an email from a worried parent about a child whom they see is developmentally too young for formal schooling and is being told they have to attend because of their age, I might give them four suggestions so they can reduce the stress and angst their child is likely to endure - search if you are in a city for a 'best practice' preschool that is still play-based and has happy kids; move to Victoria or NSW where school starting ages are more flexible; find a Waldorf Steiner School (which uses an education philosophy based sensory experience) or homeschool,'' she said.

The Government's Productivity Commission is reviewing childcare and early childhood learning as part of the biggest public examination of the sector in two decades.

Ms Dent urged the inquiry to considering a trialing a later school starting age for children nationwide because pressuring them to sit tests and learn to read too young was robbing them of their childhood.

"It staggers me to see the push down towards formalised learning that is happening across Australia when there is absolutely no evidence or research that validates that this can have a positive influence on young children's lives,'' she said.

Ms Dent said the removal of "play" from kindergarten and preschool could damage children's ability to be social beings.

"The rise in aggressive behaviour being exhibited by many younger children, mainly boys, is a sign they are unable to cope with environments with no opportunity to play, no fun, little movement and developmentally inappropriate tasks - and we then penalise these children by suspending or expelling them," she said.

Education Department early childhood education executive director Garry Hewitt said there was clear research that high quality learning programs early in a child's life led to positive outcomes.

"Children's learning and development are maximised by families and qualified teachers working together," he said.

"Keeping children at home for another year would mean they could not benefit from that partnership at a time of very rapid cognitive, emotional and social development."

WE INVITE YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN

SCENES FROM AN UNSEEN WORLD The ritual we have created is an artistic attempt to portray scenes from an unseen world and to strengthen our poetic memory of place. It begins with a walk through The Forest of Poetry where writers will be speaking short poems. Each poem is a memory of place. There you will see a dancer who is wearing a skirt dyed in Kino, which is the blood-like substance present in all Eucalypts. This skirt is a garment of memories; it contains memories like these:

A forest pool where stars bathe in solitude. Red-tails cracking seeds and calling to their mates.

Peppermint flowers dusting the river in spring. The fragrant breath of coastal heath at dusk.

The hushed palette of Karri bark streaked with rain. (Words by participating poet Liana Joy Christensen)

You are invited to bring a memory- just one line, written on a small slip of paper. Speak it to the dancer who will dance it into the skirt, and then place it on the platter as a gift. At the end of the performance your memory of place will be taken home by someone else, and you will collect the gift of someone else's words. We look forward to welcoming you.
